A NIR fluorescence probe with long emission wavelength at 746 nm and high quantum yield of 0.36 was designed and synthesized to selectively detect GSH over Hcy and Cys in living systems. 2-(1,3,3-Trimethylindolin-2-ylidene)acetaldehyde was attached to rhodamine by Knoevenagel condensation to shift the emission to near infrared region. Then, ethylenediamine was linked to M2 get an important intermediate M3. Finally, target molecule named RhNM was synthesized through combined N-[4-(carbonyl)phenyl] with M3. RhNM shows excellent discrimination in detecting GSH from Hcy/Cys along with an obvious color change. The fluorescence band at 746 nm is rapidly enhanced 106-fold after adding GSH, and the quantum was calculated at 0.36. Titration experiments of GSH showed good linear relationship of intensity vs. GSG concentration, and the detection limit was calculated at 70 nM. The proposed mechanism for identifying GSH based on Michael addition involves reactions of the carbon–carbon double bond and subsequent spirolactam opening. Meanwhile, the probe RhNM can work in a wide range of pH of 4–10. The probe RhNM was used for endogenous and exogenous imaging in HepG2 cells for glutathione. There was an outstanding intracellular red fluorescence occurring upon the addition of GSH incubated with HepG2 cells. It has been successfully applied for the determination of GSH in diluted serum and for bio-imaging of GSH in living cells with low cell toxicity. All results indicated that the probe can be used as an ultra-sensitive, near-infrared fluorescent chemical sensor for selectively detecting GSH in living cell. It has great potential in imaging of live tissues and even, animal imaging.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have attracted widespread attention due to their durability to the environment. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop new technologies that are environmentally friendly, energy saving, and compatible to degrade these pollutants. In this study, a vis–NIR-driven and highly efficient S-scheme photocatalyst, WO 3− x /S doped g-C 3 N 4 , is used for PPCPs degradation. The results show that the photocatalytic activity of WO 3− x /S doped g-C 3 N 4 composite system for PPCPs is much higher than that of WO 3− x and g-C 3 N 4 . The introduced WO 3− x has a great positive effect on the photocatalytic performance of WO 3− x /S doped g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme composite photocatalyst for both naproxen and diclofenac. Due to the fast photogenerated carrier separation brought by the S-scheme, the WO 3− x /S-doped g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite exhibits enhanced performance in photocatalytic PPCPs degradation. The degradation rate of naproxen is 99.2%, and the degradation rate of diclofenac can also be as high as 99.5%. This research has important reference value for the synthesis of WO 3 -based S-scheme photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a highly morbid and lethal syndrome that is often clinically “silent” in early stages. Multimodal imaging, which integrates complementary structural and functional insights from various techniques, holds great potential to enhance diagnostic sensitivity and accuracy. However, developing a single-agent probe that effectively combines multiple imaging modalities for AKI remains a significant challenge. Herein, we show neodymium-enriched carbon dots (Nd-CDs) as a novel bimodal imaging probe for the early diagnosis of AKI by using computed tomography (CT) and the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) fluorescence. Nd-CDs with high metal doping level (17.9%) can be achieved on a gram-scale (2.1 g) through a “bottom-up” strategy. The ultra-small hydrodynamic size (<2 nm) endows Nd-CDs with rapid renal clearance. Benefiting from narrow-band NIR-II fluorescence emission at 1060 nm and strong X-ray attenuation, Nd-CDs provide high-spatial-resolution CT and highly sensitive fluorescence imaging in vivo . In a cisplatin-induced AKI rat model, Nd-CDs-based bimodal imaging reveals a pronounced delay in renal metabolism caused by tubular injury, which precedes abnormalities in blood biochemical parameters, enabling early diagnosis and progression monitoring of AKI. The proposed strategy provides new insights into the development of single-agent probes integrating multiple imaging modalities and opens up a new way for early diagnosis of AKI.

Multifunctional theranostic nanoplatforms enabling precise targeting and controlled deep tissue therapy are vital. Herein, we present a self-assembled, defect-engineered, biomimetic nanoplatform (CDMBBTO), in which piezoelectric material and downconversion nanoparticles (DCNPs) are co-assembled within a polymer matrix, preventing interactions between both components, thereby allowing each to retain its intrinsic properties while collectively enabling dual second near infrared fluorescence (NIR-II FL)/magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and synergistic piezo/chemodynamic therapy (PZDT/CDT). Mn/Bi codoped piezoelectric BaTiO 3 (MBBTO) NPs exhibit a significantly enhanced piezoelectric coefficient (~5 fold higher than pristine BTO) owing to bandgap modulation induced by defect engineering. The incorporated Mn 2+ not only catalyzes Fenton like reactions for sustained tumor suppression but also provides strong T 2 weighted MR contrast. Self-assembled NIR-II emissive DCNPs enable deep tissue optical imaging, forming an integrated theranostic system. Cloaking of U87 glioma cell membranes imparts homologous tumor targeting capability. In vivo dual modal imaging reveals efficient tumor accumulation, with peak NIR-II FL and MR signal intensities observed 6 h post-injection. Upon ultrasound activation, CDMBBTO elicits potent tumor ablation through synergistic reactive oxygen species generation and immune modulation, characterized by macrophage polarization (M2 → M1) and upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6). This work establishes CDMBBTO as a powerful nanoplatform for dual modal imaging-guided, immune potentiated PZDT/CDT toward effective glioblastoma treatment.

Sepsis induced acute liver injury (SALI), is a type of acute and severe disease that is generally characterized by producing significant amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in liver tissue, and in response to excessive ROS, producing huge amounts of inflammatory factors by hepatocytes. Considering the crucial role of ROS in SALI, a Pd doped CeO 2 (CP) nano-heterojunction with enhanced ROS scavenging capacity is developed to act as a catalytic nanomedicine for the treatment of SALI. Combining with near infrared (NIR) irradiation, it exhibits excellent scavenging capacity of ROS including hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide anion (•O 2 − ), as well as singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) for CP. Significantly, it also demonstrates the excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities for lipopolysaccharides (LPS) stimulated macrophages (RAW264.7), and cecum ligation and puncture (CLP) treated C57BL/6J mice via reducing intracellular ROS levels, decreasing inflammatory factors expression levels, as well as activating Keap1/Nrf-2/HO-1 pathway to reprogram redox homeostasis, induce cellular autophagy, reduce systemic inflammation and promote liver tissue repair, finally achieving the alleviation of SALI. It provides a promising therapeutic strategy of CP+NIR with high efficacy and biosafety for the management of SALI.

New generation of Cr 3+ -free eco-friendly phosphors (no risk of Cr 3+ → Cr 6+ oxidization toxicity) are highly sought to develop broadband NIR light sources. As an essential element for body health, Fe 3+ ion would be an exceptional alternative in strong octahedral crystal field. Here, the Fe 3+ activators were utilized in orthoborate-pyroborate A 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 for creating novel NIR-emitting phosphors. A broad absorption over 240–450 nm due to O 2- → Fe 3+ charge transfer transition was recorded for Sr 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 :Fe 3+ (SSBO:Fe 3+ ) at 370 nm and Ba 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 :Fe 3+ (BSBO:Fe 3+ ) at 355 nm. Resultant NIR emissions with large full width at half maximum about 170 nm were obtained for SSBO:Fe 3+ peaked at 975 nm and BSBO:Fe 3+ at 930 nm. The unique excitation of Fe 3+ doping towards near-ultraviolet (near-UV) region was initially achieved for potential advantage of coupling a mainstream UV chip. Codoping of Yb 3+ into A 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 :Fe 3+ made emission peak red-shift towards 1000 nm and ~ 160-fold enhancement in the integral intensity owing to a robust energy extraction from the major dark (nonluminous) Fe 3+ . The optimized SSBO:0.02Fe 3+ ,0.15Yb 3+ exhibited considerable internal and external quantum efficiency ~ 78% and 48%, respectively. Compared to the luminescence thermal stability of ASBO:Fe 3+ (32%@373 K, i.e., sustaining 32% of its room-temperature emission intensity at 373 K), the Yb 3+ codoping endowed much superior stability > 63%@373 K, and additional temperature sensing with relative sensitivity ~ 1.5% K −1 at 423 K. Ultimately, by coating the novel phosphors onto UV ~ 365 nm chips, the home-made pc-LEDs were applied in night vision, food inspection, biomedical imaging, and spectroscopy analysis.

Given the increase in public safety incidents due to bacterial infections, sensitive detection and real-time inactivation of pathogenic bacteria have garnered increasing attention in the field of food safety, clinical diagnosis, and environmental monitoring. In this study, we constructed a “two-in-one” PB@DPA-Ce-GMP@Van (PCV) nanoplatform possessing enzyme-like properties and photothermal therapeutic (PTT) and photodynamic therapeutic (PDT) abilities for the detection and inactivation of pathogenic bacteria. PCV was captured on the surface of S. aureus to form a PCV/S. aureus complex. After centrifugation, PCV suspensions could catalyze non-fluorescent Amplex Red (AR) into fluorescent substrates and fluorescent scopolamine (SC) into non-fluorescent substrates. Hence, a ratiometric fluorescence probe with SC/AR reading was constructed for the sensitive detection of bacteria. The detection range reached 10 1 –10 7 colony-forming unit (CFU)/mL, and the detection limit was as low as 5.0 CFU/mL. Furthermore, approximately 99.7 % of free S. aureus can be inactivated by the PTT and PDT abilities of PCV. Thus, this nanoplatform exhibits a novel advantage in detecting and inactivating bacteria. Moreover, the bacterial infection wound model indicated that PVC exerts good disinfection ability. This study is of immense significance in the application of targeted sensing, eliminating bacterial infection, and even clinical therapy.

Osteogenesis, osteoclastogenesis, and angiogenesis play crucial roles in bone regeneration. Parathyroid hormone (PTH), an FDA-approved drug with pro-osteogenic, pro-osteoclastogenic and proangiogenic capabilities, has been employed for clinical osteoporosis treatment through systemic intermittent administration. However, the successful application of PTH for local bone defect repair generally requires the incorporation and delivery by appropriate carriers. Though several scaffolds have been developed to deliver PTH, they suffer from the weaknesses such as uncontrollable PTH release, insufficient porous structure and low mechanical strength. Herein, a novel kind of NIR-activable scaffold (CBP/MBGS/PTHrP-2) with dual-mode PTHrP-2 (a PTH derivative) release capability is developed to synergistically promote osteogenesis and angiogenesis for high-efficacy bone regeneration, which is fabricated by integrating the PTHrP-2-loaded hierarchically mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) into the N-hydroxymethylacrylamide-modified, photothermal agent-doped, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based thermosensitive hydrogels through assembly process. Upon on/off NIR irradiation, the thermoresponsive hydrogel gating undergoes a reversible phase transition to allow the precise control of on-demand pulsatile and long-term slow release of PTHrP-2 from MBG mesopores. Such NIR-activated dual-mode delivery of PTHrP-2 by this scaffold enables a well-maintained PTHrP-2 concentration at the bone defect sites to continually stimulate vascularization and promote osteoblasts to facilitate and accelerate bone remodeling. In vivo experiments confirm the significant improvement of bone reparative effect on critical-size femoral defects of rats. This work paves an avenue for the development of novel dual-mode delivery systems for effective bone regeneration.

The combination of chemo-photothermal therapy with high efficiency and fewer side effects has a good application prospect in cancer treatment. It is of great significance to construct a nano-drug delivery system with cancer cell targeting, high drug loading and excellent photothermal conversion efficiency. Therefore, a novel nano-drug carrier MGO-MDP–FA was successfully constructed by coating folic acid-grafted maltodextrin polymers (MDP–FA) on the surface of Fe3O4-modified graphene oxide (MGO). The nano-drug carrier combined the cancer cell targeting of FA and the magnetic targeting of MGO. A large amount of anti-cancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded by π–π interaction, hydrogen bond interaction and hydrophobic interaction, with the maximum loading amount and loading capacity of 657.9 mg g−1 and 39.68 wt%, respectively. Based on the excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of MGO, MGO-MDP–FA showed good thermal ablation effect of tumor cells in vitro under NIR irradiation. In addition, MGO-MDP–FA@DOX showed excellent chemo-photothermal synergistic tumor inhibition in vitro (tumor cell killing rate reached 80%). In conclusion, the novel nano-drug delivery system MGO-MDP–FA constructed in this paper provides a promising nano-platform for chemo-photothermal synergistic treatment of cancer.

Inspired by nature, hydrogel actuators are important for designing soft robots and become one of the most essential components of intelligent research. However, classical actuation method, such as Near-Infrared (NIR) light stimulates the actuator to complete the motions then it automatically recovers original state when the light is off, cannot provide continuous in situ dynamic motion stay and recovery under one NIR light. In this study, a novel network-polycaprolactone (Net-PCL)-poly N -isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) hydrogel actuator (Net-PCL-Gel) is proposed through a layer-by-layer stacking technology, leading to the co-existence of Net-PCL with photoinduced shape memory capability and PNIPAM hydrogel segments showing de-swelling/swelling phase transition. Owing to the shape memory property of Net-PCL, the Net-PCL-Gel exhibits in situ dynamic bending and recovering stay behavior in response to NIR irradiation with the active force of PNIPAM. Different from the conventional hydrogel system, the Net-PCL-Gel also displayed remarkable decryption performance in information reading and hiding, while retaining excellent accuracy and stability. Due to its simplicity, this strategy shows great potential for the biomimetic operation of soft grippers and multifunctional actuators.

Gastrodia elata (GE) is traditionally subjected to steaming, and steaming duration plays a crucially important role in determining GE quality. This study examined the variations in bioactive components during the steaming process and proposed the utilization of electronic eye and Fourier Transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy for quality assessment. The findings revealed that the levels of parishin E parishin B, parishin A, and gastrodin initially rose and subsequently declined, while 4-Hydroxybenzyl alcohol exhibited a rapid decrease followed by stabilization. With prolonged steaming, the brightness of GE decreased, while the red and yellow tones became more pronounced and the color saturation increased. FT-NIR divided the steaming process into three stages: 0 min (raw GE), 0–9 min (partially steamed GE), and 9–30 min (fully steamed GE), and the partial least squares regression models effectively predicted the levels of five components. Overall, this study provided valuable insights into quality control in food processing.

Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy plays a critical role in axillary staging of breast cancer. However, traditional SLN mapping does not accurately discern the presence or absence of metastatic disease. Detection of SLN metastasis largely hinges on examination of frozen sections or paraffin-embedded tissues post-SLN biopsy. To improve detection of SLN metastasis, we developed a second near-infrared (NIR-II) in vivo fluorescence imaging system, pairing erbium-based rare-earth nanoparticles (ErNPs) with bright down-conversion fluorescence at 1556 nm. To visualize SLNs bearing breast cancer, ErNPs were modified by balixafortide (ErNPs@POL6326), a peptide antagonist of the chemokine receptor CXCR4. The ErNPs@POL6326 probes readily drained into SLNs when delivered subcutaneously, entering metastatic breast tumor cells specifically via CXCR4-mediated endocytosis. NIR fluorescence signals increased significantly in tumor-positive versus tumor-negative SLNs, enabling accurate determination of SLN breast cancer metastasis. In a syngeneic mouse mammary tumor model and a human breast cancer xenograft model, sensitivity for SLN metastasis detection was 92.86% and 93.33%, respectively, and specificity was 96.15% and 96.08%, respectively. Of note, the probes accurately detected both macrometastases and micrometastases in SLNs. These results overall underscore the potential of ErNPs@POL6326 for real-time visualization of SLNs and in vivo screening for SLN metastasis.
