FITC functionalized magnetic core–shell Fe3O4/Ag hybrid nanoparticle for selective determination of molecular biothiols

Ling Chen,Jinhua Li,Shasha Wang,Wenhui Lu,Aiguo Wu,Jaebum Choo,Lingxin Chen

A sensing strategy for chromogenic detection of molecular biothiols has been proposed based on fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) functionalized magnetic core–shell Fe 3 O 4 /Ag hybrid nanoparticles. Ag coated magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were initially synthetized. FITC was subsequently conjugated on the surface of core–shell nanoparticles by Ag–SCN linkage and then the fluorescence of FITC was quenched. Upon addition of molecular biothiols, since the Ag S bond is stronger than Ag–SCN, a place-displacement between thiols and FITC would occur and thereby the fluorescence of FITC would recover. Thus, a fluorescence “off-on” probe was attained by virtue of biothiols, so after magnetic separation, the fluorescence signal change of FITC in clear solution could be employed for quantitative determination of typical molecular biothiols such as glutathione (GSH) and cysteine (Cys). High sensitivity was obtained with the detection limits of 10   nM and 20   nM for GSH and Cys, respectively. As well as, the assay strategy presented excellent selectivity toward molecular biothiols against other amino acids. Furthermore, confocal imaging was achieved in living cells, indicating that this fluorescent probe is potentially applicable for imaging molecular thiols in biological systems.

Solvent-controlled 3D lanthanide–polyoxometalate frameworks: reduction and stabilization of Ag nanocomposites and catalytic properties

Guang-Gang Gao,Chao-Yu Song,Xi-Ming Zong,Dong-Feng Chai,Hong Liu,Yu-Long Zou,Jian-Xun Liu,Yun-Feng Qiu

Four three-dimensional lanthanide–polyoxometalate complexes, [K4Ln3(H2IDC)3(HIDC)3(H2O)3(SiW12O40)]·nH2O (Ln = La (1), n = 7 and Ce (2), n = 6; H3IDC = 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid) and [Ln4(HIDC)4(H2O)8(SiW12O40)]·11H2O (Ln = La (3) and Ce (4)), have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions. Compounds 1 and 2 are 3D architectures that include 2D layered structures connected by K+ cations, which were realized by tuning the reaction media with different ratios of water and ethanol. By comparison, in the cases of 3 and 4, lanthanide ions coordinate to tridentate HIDC ligands forming 2D Ln–organic networks, which are further pillared by α-Keggin type [SiW12O40]4− polyoxoanions and thus constructing new 3D frameworks featuring 1D channels along the a and b axes. All of these complexes could induce the formation of Ag nanocomposites possessing high catalytic activity towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in the presence of NaBH4.

Synthesis of micron-SiO2@nano-Ag particles and their catalytic performance in 4-nitrophenol reduction

Man Wang,Di Tian,Panpan Tian,Liangjie Yuan

Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were deposited on the surface of micron silica spheres. The structure of the composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) method. The as-prepared micron-SiO 2 @nano-Ag particles were used as a catalyst in the borohydride reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), which was detected by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. The result showed that the composite particles presented a comparable catalytic activity with that of spherical silver nanoparticles.

Supramolecular gel based on the cyclodextrin inclusion assembly of Ag-Fe3O4 nanodimers and Pluronic F127

Yi Yang,Xiao Chen,Dandan Huang,Wei Ye

Being considered as building blocks, the inorganic nanodimer particles such as Ag-Fe 3 O 4 , Cd-Se and Pt-Fe 3 O 4 , have attracted much attention because of their capability of dual surface functionalization and potential applications in field-emission, data storage and photovoltaic devices. For these motivations and as a continuation of our previous study, a gel with flower-like morphology based on Ag-Fe 3 O 4 nanodimers has been constructed with the carboxylated cyclodextrin (MAH-CD) and Pluronic F127 molecules in mixed solvent of cyclohexane and water. The morphology of Ag-Fe 3 O 4 nanodimers and structure of MAH-CD were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) respectively. The mechanism of gel formation is discussed along with the data obtained from rheological measurement, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Each Ag-Fe 3 O 4 particle was coated by lots of MAH-CD molecules, which were threaded by F127 chains. The gel fabrication is controlled by the inclusion of MAH-CD with F127, the interaction between the carboxyl group and the Fe 3 O 4 surface. The cyclohexane molecules in gel were trapped with F127 by cyclodextrin, which may be packed orderly through hydrogen bond. Meanwhile, the Fe 3 O 4 side of nanodimers provides the anchoring position for carboxyl group to induce the formation of gel. Such an Ag-Fe 3 O 4 nanodimer initiated gel can be used either based on Ag side for catalytic and sensing properties, or based on superparamagnetism from Fe 3 O 4 side.

“Green” synthesis of magnetic core–shell Fe3O4@SN–Ag towards efficient reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Wang Zhen-Zhen,Zhai Shang-Ru,Zhang Feng,Xiao Zuo-Yi,Zhai Bin,An Qing-Da

This work presented a novel, facile, cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach for the preparation of magnetic core–shell structured catalyst i.e. Fe 3 O 4 @SN–Ag (abbreviation of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –NH 2 –Ag). During the process of preparation, Ag nanoparticles were in situ generated with amino groups in the surface of Fe 3 O 4 @SN serving as green reductant and stabilizer in the absence of any additional toxic reductant or organic reagent. Magnetic core, Fe 3 O 4 , was easily prepared through solvothermal method. The subsequent coating and surface amino functionalization of SiO 2 was accomplished via one-pot sol–gel method, which was green and time-saving. What’s more, the resulting catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic property (the reaction was finished within 2 min) and reusability (reused at least seven times) in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol.

Fabrication of a Ag/Bi3TaO7 Plasmonic Photocatalyst with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Degradation of Tetracycline

Bifu Luo,Dongbo Xu,Di Li,Guoling Wu,Miaomiao Wu,Weidong Shi,Min Chen

A novel Ag/Bi3TaO7 plasmonic photocatalyst has been prepared by a simple photoreduction process. The as-prepared Ag/Bi3TaO7 photocatalyst exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) compared to that of a bare Bi3TaO7 catalyst. The 1 wt % Ag-loaded Bi3TaO7 sample showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency for TC degradation (85.42%) compared with those of the other samples. The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the synergistic effect of the surface plasmon resonance caused by Ag nanoparticles. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrated that the incorporation of silver nanoparticles onto the Bi3TaO7 surface promoted the separation of photogenerated carriers. In addition, an electron spin resonance (ESR) and trapping experiment revealed that the photoinduced active species hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical were the main active species in the photocatalytic process of TC degradation. The photocatalytic reaction mechanism was discussed by active species trapping and ESR analysis.

Controllable synthesis of Ag@TiO2 heterostructures with enhanced photocatalytic activities under UV and visible excitation

Fanli Zhang,Zhiqiang Cheng,Liying Cui,Tingting Duan,Ahmed Anan,Chunfeng Zhang,Lijuan Kang

The heterostructure of Ag doped-TiO2 has been fabricated through the facile synthesis of electrospinning technique and hydrothermal reaction. During the hydrothermal process, the concentrations of reactants play a significant role in controlling the size and load of Ag NPs on the surface of the TiO2 fibers. After that, the nanoheterostructures of Ag@TiO2 were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Simultaneously, diffuse reflectance was used to investigate the visible light adsorption ability. Surface modification by Ag rendered visible light-induced photocatalytic activity to the TiO2 fibers. Rhodamine B (RhB) was employed as a representative dye pollutant to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the Ag/TiO2 samples. The results indicated that the heterojunction structure of Ag/TiO2 exhibited higher degradation efficiency than the pure TiO2 fibers. Furthermore, we also investigated the photocatalytic performance under visible-light, which exhibited a significant increase in degradation efficiency. Additionally, the proposed mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of TiO2 fibers by deposited-Ag particles was proposed.

Xue Wang,Bing Zhang,Jing Li,Honghong Chang,Wenlong Wei

Colorimetric assay is a powerful tool for detection of tumor markers with the outstanding advantages of visualization and simple analytical instruments. Herein, a simple and fast chromogenic reaction was developed based on Ag 3 PO 4 /Ag nanocomposite synthesized by one-step chemical bath method. And the Ag 3 PO 4 /Ag nanocomposite owned the ability of oxidizing of TMB under the acidic condition due to the hydrolytic action. The nanocomposite was characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Then, the colorimetric immunoassay was constructed by utilizing Ag 3 PO 4 /Ag nanocomposite as molecular labels for carcino embryonie antigen (CEA, UniProt accession number: P06731) detection. The blue color with gradient change was observed with the increasing of CEA concentrations. Under optimal conditions, the variation between absorbance values and CEA levels was linear in the range of 0.2   ng   mL −1 ~ 2.5   ng   mL −1 with the detection limit of 0.03   ng   mL −1 . More importantly, the developed colorimetric immunoassay exhibited good selectivity , repeatability, stability and potential application in the real serum sample detection.

Enhanced high-temperature service reliability of sinter-bonded joints with micro-nano hybrid Ag paste

Shuang Xi,Xingwang Shen,Junjie Li

There are inevitable cracking defects in pressureless bonded joints with single nanoparticle system silver (Ag) pastes, which could potentially compromise the long-term service reliability of the bonded joints. To address this issue, a novel hybrid Ag paste suitable for pressureless sintering was developed by introducing micron Ag flakes into the modified Ag nanoparticles. The effects of process parameters, such as the mass ratio of Ag nanoparticles to micron-sized Ag flakes in the paste and the sintering time, on the electrical performance of the sintered films and the bonding performance of the joints were investigated. The mechanism of sintering reliability enhancement of micro-nano hybrid Ag paste was also investigated. After a long time of high-temperature aging, micro-nano hybrid Ag paste joints with optimized micro/nano ratio exhibit reduced surface defects (with porosity of 22.19 % for hybrid Ag paste joints while 28.67 % for nano-Ag paste joints), which contributes to the enhanced mechanical stability compared to nano-Ag paste bonded joints (with shear strength of 45.78 MPa for hybrid Ag paste joints while 33.38 MPa for nano-Ag paste joints). The obtained hybrid Ag paste with high mechanical service reliability and superior repeatability would find a broad application prospect in the field of power device packaging.

Enhancing anti-biofouling activity in electrodialysis by spraying GO@Ag nanosheets on anion exchange membranes

Yuyang Yao,Yueyue Lu,Jingwen Xu,Liang Guo,Heda Ding,Yitao Chen,Yuna Shi,Junbin Liao,Edison Huixiang Ang,Zhenlu Shen,Jiangnan Shen

To mitigate biofouling and maintain the properties of the anion exchange membranes (AEMs) in electrodialysis (ED) processes, conferring specialized functional coatings onto surfaces has proven effective in reducing susceptibility to biofouling. In this research, AEM substrates were synthesized using the conventional chemical assembly method, involving the reaction of 1-butylimidazole (BIm) with commercially available bromomethylated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO). Subsequently, a synergistic anti-biofouling system comprising graphene oxide (GO) and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) co-mingled casting-solution was formulated into a 2-μm coating through spraying onto the AEM surface. Exceptional static antibacterial activity of this system towards prevalent Gram-negative ( E. coli ) and Gram-positive ( S. aureus ) bacteria due to contact killing mechanisms. The dynamic anti-biofilm capability of post-electrodialysis AEM was evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing consistent efficacy. Notably, the enhancement of anti-biofouling properties was achieved without compromising separation efficiency, as the coating solution shares the same composition as the substrate membrane. Crucially, the co-sprayed coating technique on the AEM surface overcomes the conventional “trade-off phenomenon” between performance and stability. This approach to fabricating anti-biofouling AEMs is believed to provide valuable insights for further optimization and application, thereby facilitating their deployment in water treatment and related fields.

Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Conversion to CO via Cu-Doped Induced Lattice Compression in Ag Nanosheets

Min Zhu,Ting Zhang,Jinlong Wu,Xiuli Wang,Jin Zhang,Feng Li,Jing Li

Lattice strain is widely recognized as an effective strategy for tuning transition metal catalytic activity, yet its direct impact on electrochemical CO₂ reduction (ECO₂RR) remains not fully understood. In this work, a strategy of Cu-doped Ag is employed to construct a series of AgCu nanosheet structures (NS) with varying lattice compression rates (from −1.90% to −2.75%). Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, along with in situ infrared spectroscopic analysis, demonstrate that Cu incorporation efficiently modulates the electronic structure of Ag, promoting enhanced charge transfer. Especially, the changed lattice compression rates can alter the charge density at adsorption sites, thereby ameliorating the surface coverage of CO and adsorption energy of the reaction intermediates ( * COOH and * CO). As a result, the AgCu 5% catalyst exhibits a maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 95.5% for CO production in an H-cell and 98% in a flow cell at −0.8 V RHE , respectively. Simultaneously, the AgCu 5% catalyst achieves FE CO of above 86% in the ultrawide current range of 33–215 mA cm −2 . The work affords an effective way to use a strain compression strategy to improve the CO 2 reduction performance.

Electrophoretic deposition of Ag-Cu-CTS coatings on porous titanium with photothermal-responsive antibacterial effect

Xiaodan Jiang,Jiabao Guo,Yuhan Zhang,Hubao Zuo,Yuanqi Bao,Nian Liu,Mingna Guo,Ronghai Wu,Qiang Chen

Porous architecture of titanium implants offers significant advantages in promoting osseointegration and mitigating the “stress shielding” effect. However, challenges remain in enhancing vascularization and preventing infection, especially given the complexities of modifying the intricate surface structure of porous titanium (PT). This study introduces a novel surface modification technique of PT using anti-gravity perfusion electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique to fabricate antibacterial coatings containing silver (Ag) and copper (Cu) co-doped mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Ag-Cu@MSN) and chitosan binder on the surface of PT. The developed coating exhibits rapid and stable photothermal response to 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light, leading to a localized temperature rise and triggered release of Ag and Cu ions for synergistic bactericidal efficacy against both E. coli and S. aureus . In vitro studies further demonstrated that the coated PT significantly promoted the proliferation of mouse calvaria pre-osteoblast (MC3T3-E1) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), with a notable increase in HUVECs migration and angiogenesis, attributable to the presence of Cu ions. This innovative EPD-based coating strategy offers a promising avenue for developing uniform, photothermally-activated antibacterial surfaces on PT implants, with substantial implications for advancing clinical bone repair applications.
