E-eye and FT-NIR combined with multivariate algorithms to rapidly evaluate the dynamic changes in the quality of Gastrodia elata during steaming process

Jiu-ba Zhang,Bin Wang,Yun-fei Zhang,Yi Wu,Ming-xuan Li,Ting Gao,Tu-lin Lu,Zhen-hua Bian,Lian-lin Su

Gastrodia elata (GE) is traditionally subjected to steaming, and steaming duration plays a crucially important role in determining GE quality. This study examined the variations in bioactive components during the steaming process and proposed the utilization of electronic eye and Fourier Transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy for quality assessment. The findings revealed that the levels of parishin E parishin B, parishin A, and gastrodin initially rose and subsequently declined, while 4-Hydroxybenzyl alcohol exhibited a rapid decrease followed by stabilization. With prolonged steaming, the brightness of GE decreased, while the red and yellow tones became more pronounced and the color saturation increased. FT-NIR divided the steaming process into three stages: 0 min (raw GE), 0–9 min (partially steamed GE), and 9–30 min (fully steamed GE), and the partial least squares regression models effectively predicted the levels of five components. Overall, this study provided valuable insights into quality control in food processing.

Selective in situ dynamic motion stay and recover under single NIR light in soft actuator by triggered Shape-Memory and phase transition of hydrogel

Xiaoyong Zhang,Meiyue Jin,Liping Ding,Jinmei He,Yongping Bai,Lidong Zhang

Inspired by nature, hydrogel actuators are important for designing soft robots and become one of the most essential components of intelligent research. However, classical actuation method, such as Near-Infrared (NIR) light stimulates the actuator to complete the motions then it automatically recovers original state when the light is off, cannot provide continuous in situ dynamic motion stay and recovery under one NIR light. In this study, a novel network-polycaprolactone (Net-PCL)-poly N -isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) hydrogel actuator (Net-PCL-Gel) is proposed through a layer-by-layer stacking technology, leading to the co-existence of Net-PCL with photoinduced shape memory capability and PNIPAM hydrogel segments showing de-swelling/swelling phase transition. Owing to the shape memory property of Net-PCL, the Net-PCL-Gel exhibits in situ dynamic bending and recovering stay behavior in response to NIR irradiation with the active force of PNIPAM. Different from the conventional hydrogel system, the Net-PCL-Gel also displayed remarkable decryption performance in information reading and hiding, while retaining excellent accuracy and stability. Due to its simplicity, this strategy shows great potential for the biomimetic operation of soft grippers and multifunctional actuators.

Folic acid–maltodextrin polymer coated magnetic graphene oxide as a NIR-responsive nano-drug delivery system for chemo-photothermal synergistic inhibition of tumor cells

Tao Gong,Xiaoyu Wang,Huirui Zhu,Chaochao Wen,Qing Ma,Xiaoning Li,Meining Li,Rui Guo,Wenting Liang

The combination of chemo-photothermal therapy with high efficiency and fewer side effects has a good application prospect in cancer treatment. It is of great significance to construct a nano-drug delivery system with cancer cell targeting, high drug loading and excellent photothermal conversion efficiency. Therefore, a novel nano-drug carrier MGO-MDP–FA was successfully constructed by coating folic acid-grafted maltodextrin polymers (MDP–FA) on the surface of Fe3O4-modified graphene oxide (MGO). The nano-drug carrier combined the cancer cell targeting of FA and the magnetic targeting of MGO. A large amount of anti-cancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded by π–π interaction, hydrogen bond interaction and hydrophobic interaction, with the maximum loading amount and loading capacity of 657.9 mg g−1 and 39.68 wt%, respectively. Based on the excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of MGO, MGO-MDP–FA showed good thermal ablation effect of tumor cells in vitro under NIR irradiation. In addition, MGO-MDP–FA@DOX showed excellent chemo-photothermal synergistic tumor inhibition in vitro (tumor cell killing rate reached 80%). In conclusion, the novel nano-drug delivery system MGO-MDP–FA constructed in this paper provides a promising nano-platform for chemo-photothermal synergistic treatment of cancer.

Engineering of a NIR-activable hydrogel-coated mesoporous bioactive glass scaffold with dual-mode parathyroid hormone derivative release property for angiogenesis and bone regeneration

Shi Liu,Zhengzhe Han,Ji-Na Hao,Dapeng Zhang,Xianglong Li,Yuanyuan Cao,Jinghuan Huang,Yongsheng Li

Osteogenesis, osteoclastogenesis, and angiogenesis play crucial roles in bone regeneration. Parathyroid hormone (PTH), an FDA-approved drug with pro-osteogenic, pro-osteoclastogenic and proangiogenic capabilities, has been employed for clinical osteoporosis treatment through systemic intermittent administration. However, the successful application of PTH for local bone defect repair generally requires the incorporation and delivery by appropriate carriers. Though several scaffolds have been developed to deliver PTH, they suffer from the weaknesses such as uncontrollable PTH release, insufficient porous structure and low mechanical strength. Herein, a novel kind of NIR-activable scaffold (CBP/MBGS/PTHrP-2) with dual-mode PTHrP-2 (a PTH derivative) release capability is developed to synergistically promote osteogenesis and angiogenesis for high-efficacy bone regeneration, which is fabricated by integrating the PTHrP-2-loaded hierarchically mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) into the N-hydroxymethylacrylamide-modified, photothermal agent-doped, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based thermosensitive hydrogels through assembly process. Upon on/off NIR irradiation, the thermoresponsive hydrogel gating undergoes a reversible phase transition to allow the precise control of on-demand pulsatile and long-term slow release of PTHrP-2 from MBG mesopores. Such NIR-activated dual-mode delivery of PTHrP-2 by this scaffold enables a well-maintained PTHrP-2 concentration at the bone defect sites to continually stimulate vascularization and promote osteoblasts to facilitate and accelerate bone remodeling. In vivo experiments confirm the significant improvement of bone reparative effect on critical-size femoral defects of rats. This work paves an avenue for the development of novel dual-mode delivery systems for effective bone regeneration.

NIR-triggered release of DOX from sophorolipid-coated mesoporous carbon nanoparticles with the phase-change material 1-tetradecanol to treat MCF-7/ADR cells

Abid Hussain,Shengrong Guo

To prevent premature drug release from nanoparticles, it is vital to design and prepare controlled and site-specific drug release systems. We investigated a new controllable drug release mesoporous carbon nanoparticle (MCN)-based nano-system with the advantages of enhanced permeability and retention effect (EPR) to target tumors followed by the NIR-induced heat-triggered release of a chemotherapeutic drug to show anti-tumor effects. The pores of MCN with photo-thermal effects were filled with the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) and the phase change material (PCM) 1-tetradecanol was used as a gatekeeper to trap DOX inside the pores of the mesoporous carbon nanoparticles and the release of DOX inside tumor cells was triggered using NIR irradiation. The surface of MCN was coated with natural sophorolipid (SLPD) to obtain nanoparticles (DOX-PCM@MCN-SLPD) with good biocompatibility, dispersibility and stability in aqueous solutions. The MCN-based nano-system had the ability to load 24% DOX trapped with the PCM before coating with SLPD. It was observed that the release of DOX was temperature-dependent above the melting point of PCM. Once DOXPCM@MCN-SLPD was delivered into MCF-7/ADR cells, the release of DOX was triggered by MCN-borne photo-thermal effects under NIR irradiation. The amount of DOX inside the tumor was visualized via confocal laser scanning microscopy, which showed a higher amount of DOX at a higher temperature compared to that at normal body temperature, further confirming the minimization of premature drug release at 37 °C.

Enhancing the emission color sensitivity of bulk microcrystals in response to excitation power density and NIR wavelength by introducing Li+/Lu3+ for anti-counterfeiting

Dandan Ju,Feng Song,Jun Zhang,Chengguo Ming,Feifei Song,Adnan Khan,Aihua Zhou,Xueqin Wang,Lisa Liu

Dynamic tuning upconversion color is the most convenient approach through modulation of pump power density and NIR wavelength for anti-counterfeiting. However, most of bulk upconversion systems suffer from the insensitive response to excitation power and NIR wavelength (980 nm and 1550 nm). Herein, we demonstrate that the excitation power density sensitivity and NIR wavelength sensitivity of bulk microcrystals could be improved via co-doping Li + /Lu 3+ ions. More interestingly, co-doping ions with different valences affect the emission color tendency at 1550 nm excitation, which is contrary to previous reports. The emission color of bulk NaYF 4 :Er/Yb/Li/Lu microcrystals transform from yellow to bright green color through adjusting pump power density and pump wavelength (980 nm and 1550 nm). Moreover, the mechanism of the results has been systematically discussed. The tunable emission colors of bulk NaYF 4 :Er/Yb/Li/Lu microcrystals can be easily distinguished with naked eyes and difficultly counterfeited. Therefore, the upconversion materials have a promising application in transparent anti-fake printing.

A novel type of weather resistant jungle camouflage coating based on hydrotalcites with ability to highly accurate simulate water peaks of the NIR spectrum

Bo Xu,Guoxiang Pan,Xinyu Fan,Haijie Zhou,Chengcong Qiu,Yuhua Guo,Minhong Xu,Jingwei Sun,Xinhui Xia

The existing jungle camouflage coatings cannot accurately simulate the near-infrared spectral characteristics of water peaks in the 1400–1900 nm region of green vegetation. Compared with the peak area of vegetation water absorption, the smaller water valley area of camouflage coatings is the most serious problem faced by camouflage coatings. This article proposes a new camouflage coating based on hydrotalcites, and the camouflage coating was characterized using XRD, FT-IR, TG-DTA, and SEM equipment. The experimental results show that the spectral water valley area of the camouflage coating is close to that of the vegetation, and the similarity calculation with the vegetation spectrum reaches 95.62%. Especially, the coating has long-term weather resistance, which can accurately simulate the near-infrared spectral characteristics of green vegetation. The hyperspectral imaging results of the camouflage coating confirm that the prepared camouflage coating has a camouflage effect similar to that of green vegetation. This work innovatively proposes a new type of camouflage coating based on hydrotalcites, providing a new research direction for the development of vegetation camouflage.

A new strategy for utilization of NIR from solar energy—Promotion effect generated from photothermal effect of Fe3O4@SiO2 for photocatalytic oxidation of NO

Jing Hu,Haiqiang Wang,Fan Dong,Zhongbiao Wu

Photothermal effect was for the first time utilized to capture the energy from infrared light and to promote the photocatalytic oxidation activity of NO by a simply mechanical mixing of traditional photocatalysts and core-shell structured Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 . Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 absorbed the infrared light, transferred it into thermal energy based on photothermal effect, which then accelerated the NO photocatalytic activity of traditional photocatalysts. This promotion effect led by the addition of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 was confirmed by several classical photocatalysts such as TiO 2 , g-C 3 N 4 , BiOI and CeO 2 . To quantitatively characterize the photothermal effect, thermo images were taken with a thermo imager to obtain the average temperature rise of samples under the illumination of simulated solar light. Specially, P25/Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 was studied in depth for illustration of the promotion mechanism. Experimental results showed that with the contribution of SiO 2 shell, the photocorrosion of Fe 3 O 4 didn’t occur during photocatalytic oxidation process and the photothermal effect of Fe 3 O 4 was maintained. The quantity of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 was a vital factor for promotion of photocatalytic activity and the optimum mass ratio of P25 and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 was 3–1. After 120   min of illumination, the temperature of optimum P25/Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 rose to 57.4   °C from 25   °C and its NO conversion capability showed an enhancement of 38.9% with the comparison to pure P25. The experimental results confirmed that the rise of temperature was attributed to the photothermal effect and its contribution was the same as the directly heating of photocatalysts. Furthermore, the enhancement of NO conversion capability around 30–40% was observed for the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 mixed anatase TiO 2 , g-C 3 N 4 , ZnO, BiOI and CeO 2 . In sum, we developed a new strategy for utilization of NIR light of solar energy to facilitate the photocatalytic reactions.

A new NIR-triggered doxorubicin and photosensitizer indocyanine green co-delivery system for enhanced multidrug resistant cancer treatment through simultaneous chemo/photothermal/photodynamic therapy

Yanna Yu,Zhipeng Zhang,Yun Wang,Hao Zhu,Fangzhou Li,Yuanyuan Shen,Shengrong Guo

It is a great challenge to combat multidrug resistant (MDR) cancer effectively. To address this issue, we developed a new near-infrared (NIR) triggered chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) and photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) co-release system by aid of NIR induced photothermal effect of gold nanocages (AuNCs) and temperature sensitive phase-change property of 1-tetradecanol at its melting point of 39   °C, which could simultaneously exerted chemo/photothermal/photodynamic treatment on MDR human breast cancer MCF-7/ADR cells. This nano-sized system was constructed by filling the interior of AuNCs with DOX, ICG and 1-tetradecanol, and modifying the surface with biotinylated poly (ethylene glycol) via Au-S bonds, termed as DOX/ICG@biotin-PEG-AuNC-PCM. The DOX and ICG co-release from DOX/ICG@biotin-PEG-AuNC-PCM was much faster in PBS at 40   °C or under 808   nm NIR irradiation at 2.5   W/cm 2 than at 37   °C (e.g. 67.27% or 80.31% vs. 5.57% of DOX, 76.08% vs. 3.83% of ICG for 20   min). The flow cytometry and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) results showed, the AuNCs were taken up by MCF-7/ADR cells via endocytosis , thus enhancing DOX uptake; the biotin on AuNCs facilitated this endocytosis; NIR irradiation caused the heating of the AuNCs, triggering the DOX and ICG co-release and enhancing the distribution of DOX in nuclei, the released ICG generated ROS to take photodynamic therapy. Due to the above unique properties, DOX/ICG@biotin-PEG-AuNC-PCM exerted excellent anti-tumor effects under NIR irradiation, its IC 50 against MCF-7/ADR cells was very low, only 0.48   µg/mL, much smaller than that of free DOX (74.51   μg/mL). Statement of Significance A new near-infrared (NIR) triggered chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) and photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) co-release system by aid of NIR induced photothermal effect of gold nanocages (AuNCs) and temperature sensitive phase-change property of 1-tetradecanol at its melting point of 39   °C, was prepared, termed as DOX/ICG@biotin-PEG-AuNC-PCM, which could simultaneously exerted chemo/photothermal/photodynamic treatment on MDR human breast cancer MCF-7/ADR cells. Enhancing the performance of injectable self-activating PVA-alginate hydrogel by Ag@MXene nanozyme as NIR responsive and photoenhanced antibacterial platform for wound healing

Zepeng Liang,Zelin Sang,Yumei Li,Zhenhua Chen,Xifan Mei,Xiuli Ren

Design of tough and functional hydrogel based on carbohydrate polymers is always attracting. Injectable hydrogel based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (Alg) have great potential for wound repair. However, simple hydrogel lacks functionality, such as antibacterial, which limits its application. Herein, we proposed a strategy of using Ag@MXene nanozyme to functionalize hydrogel and construct a near-infrared laser (NIR) responsive, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generating, and antibacterial platform for wound repair. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and Ag cluster modified Ti 3 C 2 (E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 ) was prepared to enhance the performance of injectable PVA-alginate hydrogel (E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 @H). The functionalized hydrogel presents porous structures (67 % porosity percentage) and excellent compressive and tensile properties (elongation up to 157 %). Under NIR laser irradiation, E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 @H showed photothermal conversion efficiency and ROS generation ability. The inhibition rate for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) can reach to 91.2 % and 90.3 %, respectively. Molecular biology experiments showed that the composite hydrogel could promote angiogenesis and wound healing by upregulating the expression of anti-inflammatory factors. The obtained injectable E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 @H hydrogel is potential in accelerating diabetic wound healing.

Dual-activity nanozyme as an oxygen pump to alleviate tumor hypoxia and enhance photodynamic/ NIR-II photothermal therapy for sniping oral squamous cell carcinoma

Xingchen Li,Ming Hao,Annan Liu,Lei Li,Maja D. Nešić,Bai Yang,Weiwei Liu,Quan Lin

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignant tumor in the head and neck region, and its treatment is limited by hypoxia and inadequate oxygen supply. Continuous oxygen delivery combined with photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the key to addressing this issue. Here, a dual-enzyme activity sea urchin-like Au@Pt-Ce6-HN-1 nanoplatform was designed to serve as an "oxygen pump" to alleviate tumor hypoxia for synergistic photodynamic/photothermal therapy (PTT). In this design, the photosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) is covalently linked to the Au@Pt nanozyme for PDT treatment. The Au@Pt nanozyme exhibits catalase-like activity, continuously decomposing H 2 O 2 in the tumor microenvironment to enhance O 2 levels, thereby achieving efficient PDT. Furthermore, Au@Pt can perform PTT and increase oxygen levels under NIR-II light to further promote PDT. The Au@Pt nanozyme also exhibits peroxidase-like activity, generating ·OH for chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Additionally, HN-1 guides the direction of "sniping" OSCC, and its high specificity benefits Au@Pt-Ce6-HN-1 at the tumor site. Au@Pt-Ce6-HN-1 exhibits bright fluorescence (FL), strong CT signal, and photothermal imaging capabilities, laying the foundation for subsequent guided PDT/PTT. This nanoplatform, which combines advantages such as continuous oxygen production, tumor targeting, and multimodal imaging, is expected to provide valuable insights into the treatment of OSCC. Statement of Significance Accurate clinical diagnosis and treatment of OSCC are challenging. We report a dual-enzyme activity sea urchin-like Au@Pt-Ce6-HN-1 nanoplatform, serving as an "oxygen pump" to guide photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) for OSCC. This nanoplatform targets OSCC for preoperative CT diagnosis and offers fluorescence visualization for surgical navigation, demonstrating potential in clinical cancer detection and surgery guidance. This innovative approach addresses OSCC hypoxia and enhances treatment efficacy through continuous oxygen production, tumor targeting, and multimodal imaging, significantly improving patient outcomes in OSCC treatment.

Cr3+ activated Na3RESi3O9 (RE = Y, Lu, Sc) silicate broadband near-infrared phosphors for luminescence towards NIR-II region via a multi-site occupancy strategy

Jiantong Wang,Changshuai Gong,Sihan Yang,Qi Zhu,Xuejiao Wang,Ji-Guang Li

Phosphor-converted near-infrared light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) are finding applications in various fields including food quality analysis, biomedical imaging, night vision, and biomedicine. The crucial factor in the development of NIR pc-LEDs devices lies in the advancement of high-performance broadband NIR phosphors. In this work, novel Cr 3+ -activated silicate phosphors NaRESi 3 O 9 (RE = Y, Lu, Sc) are reported. This silicate has a special 3D network structure in which RE has four different sites, forming four octahedrons and providing suitable occupation sites for Cr 3+ . The phosphors demonstrate a wide emission spectrum ranging from 750 to 1450 nm when excited by light at 468 nm. The full width at half maximum (FWHM), which benefits from the presence of Cr 3+ ions occupying multiple sites, is measured to be 203 nm. Notably, the strongest emission peak is observed at a longer wavelength of 984 nm compared to most other systems activated by Cr 3+ . The Na 3 ScSi 3 O 9 lattice provides a weak crystal field ( Dq / B  = 1.97) and weak phonon-photon coupling for Cr 3+ , and the integrated emission intensity of Na 3 ScSi 3 O 9 :0.03Cr 3+ is 4.66 times stronger than that of Na 3 YSi 3 O 9 :0.03Cr 3+ .
