Herein, we report a Fe 2 O 3 /CeO 2 porous nanotube as a high-performance heterogeneous photo-Fenton-like catalyst, featuring a stable Fe-O-Ce heterojunction confirmed by XPS and TEM. This structural design, coupled with enhanced visible-light absorption induced by Fe 2 O 3 modification on CeO 2 , constitutes its core structural innovation. Under 440 nm blue LED irradiation and at pH 5, this composite achieves complete degradation of 80 mg/L methyl orange within 60 min with 0.5 mL of 15 % H 2 O 2 , exhibiting remarkable catalytic efficiency. Radical trapping experiments identify h + and OH as dominant active species, with O 2 − playing a secondary role. Notably, the catalyst maintains excellent performance after 4 cycles, highlighting its superior stability. Furthermore, CeO 2 facilitates electron transfer from H 2 O 2 to Fe 3+ , accelerating the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle. This accelerated cycle not only enhances H 2 O 2 activation and OH generation but also expands the pH operating range-overcoming the narrow pH limitation of traditional Fenton systems. Band analysis across the Fe 2 O 3 /CeO 2 heterojunction further clarifies the charge separation and transfer pathway underlying this enhanced catalytic behavior. With its exceptional co-catalytic activity, broad pH adaptability, and high stability, Fe 2 O 3 /CeO 2 porous nanotubes demonstrate great practical potential for real wastewater treatment. This work not only provides an efficient strategy for wastewater decontamination but also offers new insights into designing heterojunction-based catalysts for environmental remediation.

Using solar energy to split water into clean hydrogen through photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting of photoanode is the most promising strategy to mitigate the energy crisis in the future. However, it still is a big challenge to simultaneously realize augmentation in the light energy utilization efficiency, surface water oxidation ability, spatial carrier separation of a photoanode during the PEC water splitting process. This study demonstrates for the first time a plasmonic CeO 2 /Au nanoparticle-assembled nanosphere photoanode for PEC water splitting. The experimental tests certify that the fabricated CeO 2 /Au nanosphere photoanode with optimized Au nanoparticles displays drastically boosted PEC water splitting ability. The photocurrent density obtained under bias-free condition and applied bias photon current efficiency of the as-fabricated and optimized CeO 2 /Au nanosphere photoanode are respectively improved by 13.3 and 9 times compared with that of pore CeO 2 nanosphere photoanode. Optical and spectroscopic experiments reveal that Au NPs significantly improve the light energy utilization efficiency and inject energetic hot electrons into CeO 2 . In addition, photoelectrochemical and electrochemical experiments confirm that the sensitization of Au NPs remarkably accelerates surface water oxidation ability and improve the spatial carrier separation efficiency of nanoparticle-assembled CeO 2 nanosphere photoanode. This study demonstrates the potential in the fields of employing plasmonic materials to boost light-driven hydrogen production of photoelectrodes by simultaneously boosting light energy utilization efficiency, surface water oxidation ability and spatial carrier separation efficiency.

To overcome the critical limitation of conventional epoxy coatings in providing long-term barrier effect against corrosion species and on-demand corrosion inhibition at damaged sites, this study develops a self-protective CeO 2 @ZrP/EP composites coating via in-situ hydrothermal growth of pH-responsive CeO 2 nanoparticles on lamellar α-ZrP nanosheets. The hydroxyl-rich CeO 2 nanoparticles not only enhance interfacial compatibility by filling voids and creating mechanical interlocking between α-ZrP nanosheets and the epoxy matrix, but also enable pH-triggered Ce 3+/4+ release under acidic condition. After 60 days immersion, the composite coating achieved a low-frequency impedance modulus (|Z| 0.01Hz ) of 3.5 × 10 9 Ω·cm 2 , which is four orders of magnitude higher than pure EP coating (3.7 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 ). Crucially, elemental mapping confirmed 2.0 wt% cerium enrichment at artificial scratches, demonstrating autonomous active inhibition. This dual-action strategy synergistically integrates durable barrier protection with intelligent corrosion inhibition, providing long-term steel protection in marine environments.

In this work, the shuttle-like CeO 2 modified g-C 3 N 4 composite was synthesized and was combined with persulfate (PS) for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin (NOR) under visible light. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra were used to characterize the structural and optical properties of the as-prepared catalysts. Active species trapping experiments demonstrated that additional sulfate radicals (·SO 4 - ) formed upon the addition of PS which could cooperate with superoxide radicals ( O 2 - ), holes (h + ) and hydroxyl radicals ( OH) to decompose NOR. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was also formed during the reaction and acted as an important active species. The degradation products of NOR were also identified and analyzed by using LC-MS technology , and the possible degradation mechanism and pathways were proposed and discussed. This work indicated that the shuttle-like CeO 2 modified g-C 3 N 4 coupled with PS displayed promising applications in the field of pharmaceutical wastewater purification.

Hollow heterostructured catalysts have been widely investigated and applied in photocatalytic organic reactions. However, achieving hybrid catalysts with optimized hollow structure and controllable components is still a challenge. Herein, Cu-BTC@CuS@CeO 2 ternary heterostructure hollow octahedrons were designed and prepared using a copper-based metal–organic framework (Cu-BTC) as both copper source and template. A thin CeO 2 nanolayer was first formed and covered on the prepared Cu-BTC octahedron surface through a hydrothermal process. In the meanwhile, the Cu-BTC octahedrons were controllably etched in this hydrothermal process, leading to the formation of Cu-BTC@CeO 2 hollow octahedron. The following sulfidation reaction produced Cu-BTC@CuS@CeO 2 double p-n heterojunction hollow octahedrons. Benefiting from the novel hollow octahedron double p-n heterojunctions, excellent visible-near infrared light absorption, and fast charge transfer and separation, the obtained Cu-BTC@CuS@CeO 2 hollow octahedron hybrid catalyst exhibited a significantly higher photocatalytic activity toward the oxidative coupling of amines to imines at room temperature under visible-near infrared light irradiation compared to the control single component catalysts (Cu-BTC, CeO 2 , and CuS) and binary hybrid catalysts (Cu-BTC@CeO 2 , Cu-BTC@CuS, and CuS@CeO 2 ). The enhanced charge transfer at the double p-n heterojunction was discussed. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic oxidation products and reaction mechanism were investigated by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and pyridine adsorption FT-IR spectroscopy. This work presents a promising strategy for the design of multi-component hollow heterostructure catalysts.

The catalytic conversion of CO 2 into formic acid (FA) is a 100% atom economy strategy for carbon recycling, yet it remains challenging due to the need for high-performance catalysts. This study presents a well-defined single-atom Ru catalyst anchored on oxygen-deficient CeO 2 , synthesized via a facile solvothermal and calcination process followed by impregnation. The catalyst demonstrated exceptional efficiency for the selective hydrogenation of CO 2 to FA, achieving a remarkable turnover frequency (TOF) of 5719 h −1 . Experimental and characterization results revealed that oxygen vacancies (OVs) in CeO 2 significantly enhanced CO 2 adsorption and activation while stabilizing Ru species and increasing their charge density, thereby improving H 2 activation. The synergistic interaction between OVs and electronic metal-support interactions was identified as the key to the catalyst’s superior performance. This work provides valuable insights into the strategic design of heterogeneous catalysts, offering a pathway for efficient CO 2 utilization and broader applications in catalytic processes.

CeO 2 is incapable of conducting protons and tends to leach from the proton exchange membrane (PEM) under the acidic conditions during fuel cell operation, consequently deteriorating both the power density and durability of the fuel cell. In this work, we prepared an acid-insoluble HPCe hybrid by combining polyethyleneimine-polydopamine (PEI-PDA) crosslinked coated CeO 2 with phosphotungstic acid, a strong proton conductor. The PEI-PDA coating not only prevents the dissolution of CeO 2 in acidic environments but also suppresses the leaching of HPW. When incorporated into Nafion, the composite membrane containing 2 wt% HPCe exhibits a proton conductivity of 0.115 S cm −1 in liquid water, which is 15% higher than that of the recast Nafion membrane (0.100 S cm −1 ), while remaining stable for 2 months. After being assembled in the fuel cell, the performance and operation stability of the composite membrane significantly outperforms the recast Nafion membrane.

Integrated CO 2 capture and dry reforming of CH 4 (ICC-DRM) is an effective approach to mitigate CO 2 emissions while producing syngas, with dual-functional material (DFM) as the core. CaO-Ni/CeO 2 DFM shows great potential for ICC-DRM application, but the impact of synthesis methods on its' structure and performance remains unclear. In this study, CaO-Ni/CeO 2 was prepared via solution combustion (SC), wet ball-milling (WM), and co-precipitation (CP), characterized by XRD, BET, SEM-EDS TEM, TGA and H 2 -TPR. The ICC-DRM performance was evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor. The SC sample exhibited the most favorable surface structure, with well-developed porosity and uniform elemental distribution, achieving the highest CO 2 capture capacity (152 wt% at 650 °C), achieving the highest CO 2 capture capacity (152 wt% at 650 °C) The WM sample showed intermediate properties, while the CP sample had a dense morphology and elemental aggregation leading to poor performance. Elevated temperature (675–700 °C) promoted WM/CP reactivity (still lower than SC at 650 °C), but caused severe performance degradation and increasing carbon deposition (21% for WM and 37% for CP after 10 cycles), while the SC sample maintained stability. Further optimization confirmed 5% Ni as the optimal loading for SC-DFM, achieving 95%–97% CH 4 conversion and a stable H 2 /CO ratio (∼1) at 650 °C. This study clarifies the regulatory effect of synthesis methods on DFM structure-reactivity relationship, identifying SC as the optimal strategy for high-performance ICC-DRM materials.

MgH 2 exhibits significant potential as promising candidates for next-generation hydrogen storage solutions, owing to excellent hydrogen storage capacity. However, its high thermodynamic stability and kinetic barriers result in sluggish dehydrogenation kinetics and high dehydrogenation temperatures. Herein, oxygen vacancy (O V )-rich CeO 2 @C effectively weakens the Mg–H bond energy, which is manifested as the elongation of the Mg–H bond. Moreover, the O V -rich CeO 2 @C reacts with H 2 to form CeH 2.73 , which enhances hydrogen diffusion within the Mg/MgH 2 system. Meanwhile, the formation of CeH 2.73 promotes the formation of O V within the MgH 2 -CeO 2 @C, further facilitating the dehydrogenation of MgH 2 . Thereby, the synergistic effect of the O V -rich CeO 2 @C and CeH 2.73 lower the dehydrogenation temperature of MgH 2 and enhance kinetic performance. The MgH 2 -CeO 2 @C-3h behaves the most optimal dehydrogenation performance, achieving a release of 4.88 wt% H 2 within 10 min at 350 ℃. The initial dehydrogenation temperature of the MgH 2 -CeO 2 @C-3h is reduced to 274 ℃, and the dehydrogenation activation energy ( E a ) is lowered to 99.13 kJ mol –1 , compared to 327 ℃ and 160.7 kJ mol –1 for pristine MgH 2 . This work provides new insights into designing O V -rich metal oxide catalysts for MgH 2 .

Reasonable design of perovskite electrodes via surface engineering to realize high activity and good durability is an attractive strategy for advanced symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells (S-SOFCs). Herein, we highlight uniformly distributed iron doped CeO 2 (FDC) nanoparticles decorated PrBaMn 0.5 Fe 1.5 O 5+δ perovskite (PBMF/FDC) via atomic layer deposition (ALD) as symmetric electrodes for S-SOFC. It is revealed that the ALD-FDC decoration contributes to both oxygen reduction and fuel oxidation kinetics, ultimately demonstrating high electrochemical performance. After the optimized FDC decoration, the interfacial polarization resistances decrease by 69 % in air and by 27% in 5 %H 2 /Ar at 650 °C, respectively. As a demo, the peak power density of S-SOFCs with PBMF/FDC electrodes using hydrogen as a fuel delivers a high peak power density of 573 mW cm −2 and 305 mW cm −2 at 750 and 650 °C, respectively, superior to the bare PBMF based S-SOFCs. Moreover, the S-SOFCs with PBMF/FDC electrodes show long-lasting life when using humidified syngas and humidified C 3 H 8 as fuels. These findings disclose a facile ALD approach to tailor perovskite electrodes for robust and efficient electrocatalysis.

Ulinastatin (UTI) is a glycoprotein extracted and purified from human urine. As a protease inhibitor, it mainly functions to inhibit the activity of various proteases such as trypsin and elastase, while also exerting anti-inflammatory effects and protecting tissues and organs. Therefore, the detection of UTI is of great significance in guiding clinical medication, evaluating disease severity, monitoring treatment effects, and judging prognosis. Based on CeO 2 :Eu 3+ nanomaterials and luminol molecules, a dual-mode biosensor integrating electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and fluorescence (FL) was constructed for the sensitive detection of UTI. CeO 2 :Eu 3+ significantly enhanced the ECL intensity of luminol; combined with a sandwich-type immunoreaction, this enabled sensitive and selective ECL detection of UTI. Meanwhile, FL detection of UTI was realized by leveraging the change in the intensity of luminol’s characteristic emission peak in FL. Moreover, this dual-mode detection strategy can effectively improve detection accuracy, enabling the detection of UTI with high sensitivity, accuracy, and selectivity. Experimental results showed that the ECL sensor exhibited good linearity for UTI with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.28 pM in the concentration range of 10 -11 –10 -5 M. The FL sensor exhibited good linearity for UTI with a LOD of 0.026 nM in the linear range of 10 -10 – 10 -4 M. When this dual-mode biosensor was applied to the detection of UTI in serum samples, the results of both detection modes were satisfactory.

Light-driven dry reforming of methane (LDRM) provides a feasible route for converting methane (CH 4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into synthesis gas, yet most reported systems require ultraviolet light or a high photon flux, limiting their practical deployment. Here, we show that interfacial oxygen vacancy dynamics can be regulated under mild broadband irradiation through engineered metal–support electronic coupling. In this way, Rh nanoparticles (NPs) supported on two-dimensional CeO 2 nanosheets (NS) exhibit record-high Rh-specific activity under low-intensity broadband irradiation (1.20 W·cm –2 , 200–800 nm) without external heating, delivering H 2 and CO production rates of 681 and 832 mmol·g –1 Rh ·h –1 , respectively, together with the highest light-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency (LTCEE) reported for Rh-based LDRM catalysts under low-intensity irradiation (≤3.0 W·cm –2 ). In-situ characterizations, combined with density functional theory calculations, reveal a photochemical Mars–van Krevelen mechanism driven by interfacial charge separation. Photoexcited electrons transfer from CeO 2 -NS to Rh NPs across the Schottky junction, generating electron-rich Rh δ– species, while holes remain on CeO 2 -NS to induce interfacial oxygen vacancies (O v ). These vacancies serve as dynamic active sites that lower the energy barrier for CO 2 dissociation, promote *CH 3 O oxidation, and facilitate *CO desorption. The ultrathin nanosheet architecture further lowers the O v formation energy and improves charge separation efficiency, enabling dynamic vacancy generation under a low photon flux. This work establishes a general strategy for integrating light-induced charge separation with defect-mediated thermal chemistry to overcome kinetic limitations in thermodynamically demanding reactions, offering a pathway toward efficient solar-driven reforming.
