Series of novel energy-saving window coatings based on F–Nb–TiO 2 /SiO 2 nanocomposites with superhydrophobic self-cleaning performance were successfully prepared. Surface modification of F–Nb–TiO 2 and SiO 2 nanoparticles by aminopropyl triethoxy silane and perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane produced hydrophobic powders. With the help of the hierarchical structures of F–Nb–TiO 2 /SiO 2 nanocomposites, superhydrophobic surfaces were obtained. The water contact angle of the composite coatings reached 155.6°. The prepared superhydrophobic coatings shown superior anti-fouling property and good mechanical performance. Furthermore, the composite coating can shield most of solar radiation. The composite coating lowed the air temperature of the simulate house by 11 °C in the outdoor thermal experiments. The integration of good solar filtration and exceptional anti-fouling performance makes F–Nb–TiO 2 /SiO 2 coatings suitable candidates for energy-saving window coatings.

Silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) is a prominent candidate for radiative cooling applications due to its low absorption in solar wavelengths (0.25–2.5 µm) and exceptional stability. However, its bulk phonon-polariton band results in a strong reflection peak in the atmospheric transparency window (8–13 μm), making it difficult to meet the requirements for sub-ambient passive radiative cooling. Herein, we demonstrate that SiO 2 micropillar arrays can effectively suppress infrared reflection at 8–13 μm and enhance the infrared emissivity by optimizing the micropillar array structure. We created a pattern with a height, spacing, and diameter of approximately 1.45 μm, 0.15 μm, and 0.35 μm, respectively, on top of a bulk SiO 2 substrate using reactive ion etching. The resulting surface phonon coupling of the micropillar array led to an increase in the thermal emissivity from 0.79 to 0.94. Outdoor tests show that the SiO 2 cooler with an optimized micropillar array can generate an average temperature drop of 5.5 °C throughout the daytime underneath an irradiance of 843.1 W m −2 at noon. Furthermore, the micropillar arrays endow the SiO 2 cooler with remarkable hydrophobic properties, attributed to the formation of F/C compounds introduced during the etching process. Finally, we also replicated the micropillar pattern onto the surface of industrial optical solar reflectors (OSRs), demonstrating similar emissivity and hydrophobicity enhancements. Our findings revealed an effective strategy for modifying the thermal management features of durable SiO 2 layers, which can be harnessed to cool OSRs and other similar sky-facing devices.

Formulation and shaping of heterogeneous catalysts are vital in the successful industrial application. Here micro-sized vanadium chromium composite oxides catalysts with the spherical shape were prepared via spray drying with colloidal silica as a binder material. The physicochemical properties of catalysts with different Cr/V molar ratios were characterized by XRD, XPS, FT-IR, TPR, and particle size distribution analysis. It was revealed that the addition of Cr inhibited the formation of the crystalline phase V 2 O 5 and decreased the reduction temperature of pentavalent vanadium species, and also resulted in the formation of monoclinic CrVO 4 and a highly dispersed state of vanadia species. VCrO/SiO 2 particles with various Cr/V atomic ratio were studied as catalysts for p -chlorotoluene ammoxidation to p -chlorobenzonitrile, in which the catalyst with Cr/V ratio of 1 exhibited the best catalytic performance. When the Cr/V ratio was less than 1, mixed phases of orthorhombic CrVO 4 and monoclinic Cr 2 V 4 O 13 were formed and resulted in a low catalytic activity. With the increase of Cr/V ratio, the content of monoclinic CrVO 4 in the catalysts increased, resulting in the catalytic activity of the catalysts improved. However, too large an amount of Cr led to the formation of highly oxidizing hexagonal-Cr 2 O 3 phase, which reduced the selectivity of the catalytic reaction. Graphic abstract

The efficient activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for wastewater treatment remains a great challenge. Photocatalysis, which generates highly-reactive electrons and holes, shows great potential in activating PDS for effective degradation and deep mineralization. Herein, an electron-enriched PDI-SiO 2 photocatalyst was synthesized by covalently linking 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) onto silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) to form π-π stacked supramolecular PDI layers for efficient PDS activation. The highly dispersed PDI generates electron-enriched PDI· - under visible light, promoting the rapid activation of PDS for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. The PDI-SiO 2 activated PDS system realized a high BPA degradation rate of 0.100 min −1 and a remarkable mineralization rate of 81%. Moreover, the charge separation efficiency is significantly improved since the electrons of PDI· - are captured by PDS, boosting oxidative degradation and improving the mineralization efficiency. This work developed a novel PDS activation strategy by constructing electron-enriched photocatalyst, and revealed the mechanism of photocatalytic activation and deep mineralization.

Using fly ash acid leaching residue as the silicon source, sodium silicate solution was produced by alkali leaching and the wet gel was obtained by the sol-gel method. Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) was used to modify the surface of the wet gel, thereby reducing the capillary tension during the atmospheric pressure drying process, and finally preparing a silica aerogel material with hydrophobic properties. The effects of different alkali leaching conditions, different sol pH, HMDSO dosage on the aerogel density and the changes of aerogel material properties and composition during the preparation process were investigated, and the reaction mechanism of silica aerogel preparation by atmospheric pressure drying was described. The results showed that the optimum conditions for alkali leaching were 20 wt% NaOH concentration, 2 h reaction time and 100 °C, and the desilication rate was 81.72%; the lowest Silica aerogel density of 108 mg/cm 3 at pH 5 to 6; the lowest density of silica aerogel was 110 mg/cm 3 at a modifier to wet gel volume ratio of 1:1.4.

2-Hydroxytetrahydrofuran (HTHF) is the main by-product of hydrogenation of 1,4-butynediol (BYD) to 1,4-butanediol (BDO) in industry, which is difficult to be effectively removed in the subsequent distillation process and seriously affects the product quality. Here, a series of silica-supported bimetallic Ni–Fe catalysts with different Fe/Ni weight ratios were prepared by using incipient wetness impregnation method and investigated the effect of Fe on the catalyst performance in the hydrogenation of HTHF to BDO. In comparison with monometallic Ni and Fe catalysts, bimetallic Ni–Fe catalysts exhibited better performance for HTHF hydrogenation due to the formation of Ni–Fe alloy phase identified by XRD, TEM, STEM-EDS, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 /H 2 -TPD, Pyridine FTIR and XPS, etc. A mechanism is proposed to explain the promoting effect of Fe, which can be assigned to the synergism between nickel sites with high ability to activate/overflow hydrogen and Fe-containing sites with strong oxophilicity for the activation of the O-C-O bond over the tetrahydrofuran ring. Traditional contact lenses patterns are mostly colored with organic pigments, but they suffered a pigment leakage risk after long-term wearing, which causes corneal inflammation and ulceration. To solve this issue, the structural color is applied to contact lenses because it has color and pigment free. Herein, we reported the application of SiO 2 photonic crystal microspheres in contact lenses. We successfully prepared SiO 2 photonic crystal ink with structural color and fabricated contact lenses by ink transfer printing, and these contact lenses also contain patterns and pupil areas that are the same as the traditional pigment one. In addition, in vitro cytotoxicity test, physicochemical property test, and optical property test were carried out to verify the performance of the prepared structural color lenses. All results suggested it has great potential to replace traditional organic pigment contact lenses.

At present, the selective hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes remains a challenge due to competition between unsaturated functional groups (C=C and C=O). In this study, N-doped carbon deposited on silica-supported nickel Mott–Schottky type catalysts (Ni/SiO2@NxC) was prepared for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) by using the respective hydrothermal method and high-temperature carbonization method. The prepared optimal Ni/SiO2@N7C catalyst achieved 98.9% conversion and 83.1% selectivity for 3-phenylpropionaldehyde (HCAL) in the selective hydrogenation reaction of CAL. By constructing the Mott–Schottky effect, the electron transfer from metallic Ni to N-doped carbon at their contact interface was promoted, and the electron transfer was demonstrated by XPS and UPS. Experimental results indicated that by modulating the electron density of metallic Ni, the catalytic hydrogenation of C=C bonds was preferentially performed to obtain higher HCAL selectivity. Meanwhile, this work also provides an effective way to design electronically adjustable type catalysts for more selective hydrogenation reactions. Keywords:Ni catalyst;N-doped carbon;electronic effect;cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation

Nanoscale molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) could offer high binding capacity and fast mass transfer, but their removal after adsorption is costly and time-consuming. In this paper, Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized and a lysozyme-imprinted polymer was synthesized via surface initiated atom transfer polymerization on the surface of Fe3O4@SiO2. Temperature-controlled adsorption and desorption of lysozyme were measured, and the adsorption kinetics and isothermal adsorption were determined. The results indicate that the synthesized Fe3O4 has an inverse spinel crystalline structure and Fe3O4@SiO2 is a core–shell structured nanoparticle. The adsorption kinetics followed the Langmuir EXT1 model, and the equilibrium adsorption capacity of the Fe3O4@SiO2@MIP at 40 °C was 117.12 mg g−1 with an imprinting factor of 1.51. SDS-PAGE electrophoresis confirmed the specific adsorption of lysozyme, and 86% of the adsorbed lysozyme could be released by changing the temperature.

Metal nanoparticles have attracted a great deal of interest due to their unique properties of surface plasmon resonance. Metal nanoparticles can enhance the fluorescence emission intensity of quantum dots (QDs) through the local surface plasmon resonance effect, which is mainly determined by the distance between them. Therefore, it is very important to achieve controllable distance between metal and QDs, and study fluorescence enhancement. In this work, the controllable adjustment of the distance between metal nanoparticles and QDs was successfully realized by controlling the thickness of the SiO2shell of Ag@SiO2nanoparticles. Firstly, Ag nanoparticles with uniform size distribution and relatively high concentration were prepared, and then the thickness of the SiO2shell was controlled by controlling the amount of tetra-ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in the hydrolysis of TEOS reaction. (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APS) was used to connect CdS/ZnS QDs with Ag@SiO2nanoparticles to form Ag@SiO2@CdS/ZnS QD composite nanoparticles. The fluorescence spectra shows that the fluorescence intensity of the Ag@SiO2@CdS/ZnS QD composite nanoparticles is significantly enhanced. Photoexcitation spectra and fluorescence spectra of CdS/ZnS QD and Ag@SiO2@CdS/ZnS QD composite nanoparticles, measured under different energy excitation conditions, indicate that the existence of Ag nanoparticles can enhance the fluorescence intensity of CdS/ZnS QDs. Finally, a further physical mechanism of fluorescence enhancement is revealed.Keywords:Ag-SiO2;fluorescence enhancement;transmission electron microscope;quantum dots;photoexcitation spectra

The key to developing high-performance polymer electrolytes (PEs) is to achieve their high strength and high ionic conductivity, but this is still challenging. Herein, we designed a new double-network PE based on the nonhydrolytic sol–gel reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate and in situ polymerization of zwitterions. The as-prepared PE possesses high strength (0.75 Mpa) and high stretchability (560%) due to the efficient dissipation energy of the inorganic network and elastic characteristics of the polymer network. In addition, the highest ionic conductivity of the PE reaches 0.44 mS cm−1at 30 °C owning to the construction of dynamic ion channels between the polyzwitterion segments and between the polyzwitterion segments and ionic liquids. Furthermore, the inorganic network can act as Lewis acid to adsorb trace impurities, resulting in a prepared electrolyte with a high electrochemical window over 5 V. The excellent interface compatibility of the as-prepared PE with a Li metal electrode is also confirmed. Our work provides new insights into the design and preparation of high-performance polymer-based electrolytes for solid-state energy storage devices.

Flexible composite membrane with strong strength and good thermal performances simultaneously are highly desired in broad fields. Herein, rabbit-hair-like silica/polyimide (SiO 2 /PI) composite nanofibers with super durability are prepared by a simple electrospinning and impregnating process. The embedded hollow SiO 2 microspheres and the bamboo-shaped hollow structure of the composite nanofibers endow the membrane with excellent thermal insulation , while the externally coated thin PI layer provides quite high strength without significantly reducing its thermal stability. The obtained SiO 2 /PI composite membrane demonstrates high tensile strength (19.7 MPa), good flexibility (withstanding dynamic bending at least 20000 cycles), low thermal conductivity (18.7–42.8 mW m −1 K −1 ), multi-cycle friction resistance (500 cycles) and abrupt hot/cold alternation stability (near 400 °C). These excellent properties are mainly attributed to the 3D bonding network of the composite membrane and the impregnating-reinforcing effect on single SiO 2 nanofiber. This composite membrane not only overcomes the low tensile strength and poor durability of pure SiO 2 membrane, but also possesses lightweight and fireproof properties, demonstrating broad prospects in thermal insulation, anti-shock of fire/cold and wearable protective fabrics.
