The integration of ratiometric fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window with chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) represents a promising strategy for the accurate diagnosis and efficient treatment of deep tumors. In this study, we developed a smart nanoprobe, D/UCNP-MB@SiO 2 - t AuCuNCs (D/UCMSA), with simultaneously triggering reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NIR-II fluorescence for enhanced chemodynamic/ photodynamic therapy and ratiometric imaging-guided tumor resection. Upon 980 nm laser irradiation, D/UCMSA emit up-converted light at 660 nm, which activates the loaded methylene blue (MB) to produce singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) for PDT. Simultaneously, the down-converted emission at 1525 nm serves as a reference signal for ratiometric imaging. The D/UCMSA surface is decorated with copper-doped gold nanoclusters ( t AuCuNCs) stabilized by triphenylphosphine-3,3′,3′′-trisulfonic acid, which undergo ligand exchange with overexpressed glutathione in the tumor microenvironment. Upon 808 nm laser excitation, this ligand exchange process activates fluorescence emission at 1085 nm. The incorporation of copper endows t AuCuNCs with peroxidase- and catalase-like activities, enabling the catalytic conversion of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) into hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and oxygen (O 2 ) within the tumor microenvironment. This dual enzymatic activity amplifies the CDT efficacy in tumor treatment and reshapes the tumor microenvironment, providing sufficient O 2 for 1 O 2 generation during PDT and enhancing the efficiency of combined CDT/PDT. Following with orthotopic injection of the D/UCMSA, irradiation with 808 nm and 980 nm lasers successfully enabled precise tumor resection guided via ratiometric NIR-II fluorescence imaging, combined with effective CDT/PDT. This study demonstrates a novel approach to developing integrated nanoplatforms for accurate tumor diagnosis and efficient treatment.

Near-infrared second region (NIR-II, 1000–1600 nm) has deeper penetration depth, higher sensitivity, and spatial resolution than NIR first region (NIR-I, 700–1000 nm). However, Cr 3+ and Ni 2+ -doped NIR-I/NIR-II phosphor with serious pollution and toxicity issues pose limitations for the application of these phosphors. Here, the Fe 3+ -doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 is reported by grinding-sintering method, which shows the broadband emission in the range of 1000–1600 nm with a FWHM of ≈309 nm, while the PLQY as 17.29%, under 395 nm excitation. The unique broadband emission of this phosphor originates from the activation center of Fe 3+ located in an environment with an extremely weak octahedral crystal field provided by the Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 lattice. A NIR pc-LED device is assembled with the optimal phosphor encapsulated with a commercially available 395 nm ultraviolet LED chip. Which shows a NIR output of 23.5 mW and an electro-optical conversion efficiency of 6.53% under 100 mA driving current, while the potential application of NIR pc-LED is demonstrated in the field of night vision, bio-imaging, large-scale detection, and information anti-counterfeiting with high-resolution imaging.

Background Infectious diseases caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, especially MDR Gram-negative strains, have become a global public health challenge. Multifunctional nanomaterials for controlling MDR bacterial infections via eradication of planktonic bacteria and their biofilms are of great interest. Results In this study, we developed a multifunctional platform (TG-NO-B) with single NIR laser-triggered PTT and NO release for synergistic therapy against MDR Gram-negative bacteria and their biofilms. When located at the infected sites, TG-NO-B was able to selectively bind to the surfaces of Gram-negative bacterial cells and their biofilm matrix through covalent coupling between the BA groups of TG-NO-B and the bacterial LPS units, which could greatly improve the antibacterial efficiency, and reduce side damages to ambient normal tissues. Upon single NIR laser irradiation, TG-NO-B could generate hyperthermia and simultaneously release NO, which would synergistically disrupt bacterial cell membrane, further cause leakage and damage of intracellular components, and finally induce bacteria death. On one hand, the combination of NO and PTT could largely improve the antibacterial efficiency. On the other hand, the bacterial cell membrane damage could improve the permeability and sensitivity to heat, decrease the photothermal temperature and avoid damages caused by high temperature. Moreover, TG-NO-B could be effectively utilized for synergistic therapy against the in vivo infections of MDR Gram-negative bacteria and their biofilms and accelerate wound healing as well as exhibit excellent biocompatibility both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion sOur study demonstrates that TG-NO-B can be considered as a promising alternative for treating infections caused by MDR Gram-negative bacteria and their biofilms.

The colloidosome, as a kind of Pickering microcapsule, offers a highly functionalizable approach for encapsulation, but current studies mainly focus on shells that lack real-time modulated permeability. Herein, a scalable spray drying method was employed to fabricate temperature/near-infrared (NIR)/magnetic multi-stimuli responsive colloidosomes with adjustable permeability, facilitating intelligent transmembrane transport of molecules. The colloidosomes assembled with SiO 2 /polydopamine/poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) nanoparticles can be heated from 25°C to 50°C within 5 min upon NIR exposure. The permeability of shells regulated by temperature and NIR allows for real-time remote control. Yeast cells, as an example, are encapsulated within colloidosomes. The decomposition rate of H 2 O 2 varies with temperature (25–45°C) and NIR intensity (0.5–1 W cm −2 ), which can attain a more than sixfold increase in the rate constant of pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the strategy was expanded by encapsulating doxorubicin/UiO-66 particles, highlighting its great potential in realms of multi-stimuli responsive colloidosomes applications.

Thromboembolic stroke constitutes the majority of brain strokes, resulting in elevated mortality and morbidity rates, as well as significant societal and economic burdens. Although intravenous thrombolysis serves as the standard clinical treatment, its narrow therapeutic window and the inflammatory response induced by tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) administration limit its efficacy. In the initial stages of stroke, the abrupt cessation of blood flow leads to an energy metabolism disorder, marked by a substantial decrease in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) levels, causing irreversible damage to neural cells. In this study, we introduce a neutrophil-mimetic, microalgae-derived upconversion photosynthetic nanosystem designed for targeted treatment of thromboembolic stroke. This system features upconversion nanoparticles coated with a thylakoid membrane and wrapped in an activated neutrophil membrane, further decorated with ROS-responsive thrombolytic tPA on its surface. The neutrophil-mimetic design facilitates high targeting specificity and accumulation at the thrombus site after intravenous administration. Upon exposure to elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) at the thrombus location, the nanosystem promptly demonstrated potent thrombolytic efficacy through the surface-modified tPA. Furthermore, near-infrared II (NIR-II) laser irradiation activated the generation of ATP and NADPH, which inhibited inflammatory cell infiltration, platelet activation, oxidative stress, and neuronal injury. This constructed nanoplatform not only showcases exceptional targeting efficiency at the stroke site and controllable release of the thrombolytic agent but also facilitates ATP/NADPH-mediated thrombolytic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative stress, and neuroprotective effects. Additionally, it offers valuable insights into the potential therapeutic applications of microalgae-based derivatives in managing thromboembolic stroke.

The prevalence of pathogenic bacterial infections with high morbidity and mortality poses a widespread challenge to the healthcare system. Therefore, it is imperative to develop nanoformulations capable of adaptively releasing antimicrobial factors and demonstrating multimodal synergistic antimicrobial activity. Herein, an NIR-activated multifunctional synergistic antimicrobial nanospray MXene/ZIF-90@ICG was prepared by incorporating ZIF-90@ICG nanoparticles onto MXene-NH2 nanosheets. MXene/ZIF-90@ICG can on-demand release the antimicrobial factors MXenes, ICG, and Zn2+ in response to variations in pH and ATP levels within the bacterial infection microenvironment. Under NIR radiation, the combination of MXenes, Zn2+, and ICG generated a significant amount of ROS and elevated heat, thereby enhancing the antimicrobial efficacy of PDT and PTT. Meanwhile, NIR excitation could accelerate the further release of ICG and Zn2+, realizing the multimodal synergistic antibacterial effect of PDT/PTT/Zn2+. Notably, introducing MXenes improved the dispersion of the synthesized antimicrobial nanoparticles in aqueous solution, rendering MXene/ZIF-90@ICG a candidate for application as a nanospray. Importantly, MXene/ZIF-90@ICG demonstrated antimicrobial activity and accelerated wound healing in the constructed in vivo subcutaneous Staphylococcus aureus infection model with NIR activation, maintaining a favorable biosafety level. Therefore, MXene/ZIF-90@ICG holds promise as an innovative nanospray for adaptive multimodal synergistic and efficient antibacterial applications with NIR activation.

Given the severe environmental pollution caused by low utilization efficiency of conventional pesticides, developing intelligent, eco-friendly nanopesticides is imperative. Enhancing foliar retention and stimuli-responsive release are common strategies, yet current nano-delivery systems still suffer from insufficient foliar adhesion stability and environmental responsiveness. This work fabricated a pH/NIR dual-responsive system based on tannic acid-modified urchin-like α-Fe₂O₃. The system reinforces foliar anchoring via the synergistic effect of its spiny morphology and hydrogen-bonding interactions, with 1.5-fold higher retention than spherical particles. Moreover, this system enhances imidacloprid (IMI) photostability by 70 % relative to free IMI, with encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of 26.64 % and 10.22 %, respectively. Relative to single-responsive systems, it features a NIR-boosted pH-responsive mechanism that enables precise pesticide release, thus achieving a 95.5 % mortality rate against target pests at low concentrations. Additionally, it exhibits favorable biocompatibility verified by cellular and zebrafish assays, while iron ions released from degradation promote plant growth. Therefore, this system integrates the synergistic functions of enhanced foliar retention, improved photostability, precise drug release, and crop growth promotion. These results validate its potential in boosting pesticide utilization and alleviating environmental risks, offering new perspectives for designing high-efficiency, eco-friendly nanopesticide formulations.

Bacterial infections and excessive oxidative stress severely impede the wound healing process, and the development of multifunctional wound dressings with antibacterial, antioxidant, and biosafety properties is of great clinical significance. In this study, DAHA/CMCS/Ag@PDA (DCA) injectable hydrogels were successfully prepared by dual-dynamic crosslinking of Schiff base and hydrogen bonds. Dopamine graft-modified oxidized hyaluronic acid (DAHA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) constructed a dynamic and reversible cross-linking network of the hydrogel, which endowed the hydrogel with excellent injectable, self-healing, shape-adaptive, and high adhesion properties. Meanwhile, DAHA and Ag@PDA, which are rich in catechol groups, provided the hydrogels with highly efficient synergistic antioxidant properties, which could effectively scavenge various free radicals. In addition, the loading of Ag@PDA endowed the hydrogel with excellent Ag + release and NIR-II photothermal conversion properties, and DCA2 could realize efficient killing (99.6%) of S. aureus and E. coli through the synergistic action of Ag + slow release and NIR-II photothermal, which could effectively promote the healing of bacterial-infected wounds. In conclusion, this study provides a new design strategy for hydrogel dressings for the treatment of bacterial-infected wound healing through the multifunctional integration of NIR-II photothermal synergistic antibacterial and antioxidant properties.

The clinical failure of infected bone repair is primarily due to the inability of conventional scaffolds to simultaneously eradicate resilient biofilms and orchestrate the subsequent bone regeneration within the hostile inflammatory microenvironment. In this study, we developed a NIR assisted composite scaffold based on a 3D printed polycaprolactone (PCL) framework coated with a gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel containing copper hydroxyphosphate (CuHP) and melatonin (MT). Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the scaffold exhibited enhanced antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus via photothermal effects. The presence of MT was associated with reduced local inflammation and increased M2 like macrophage markers in vivo, although direct immunomodulatory mechanisms were not proven. The scaffold supported osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) in vitro and promoted new bone formation in an acute rat model of infected femoral defect. This study presents a promising combination system.

Effective and suitable utilization of solar energy was achieved using a full-spectrum-response photocatalyst AgBr/Cs x WO 3 , applied in the photocatalytic and photochromic field. Benefitting from near-infrared (NIR) absorption ability of Cs x WO 3 , AgBr/Cs x WO 3 exhibits enhanced visible-near-infrared (Vis-NIR) driven photocatalytic activity. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence spectra (PL), and the photoelectrochemical analysis, AgBr and Cs x WO 3 formed a Z-scheme system at the interface to efficiently separate and transfer photo-induced electrons at a fast rate. The quenching experiment and the electron spin resonance (ESR) tests indicated that the photocatalytic reaction is activated by the production of superoxide radicals. Furthermore, the photochromic analysis to different light exhibits the AgBr/Cs x WO 3 heterostructure is stable under visible light with negligible photodeposition of AgBr, and has excellent double photochromic activity with visible-shielding effect of AgBr to Ag 0 and infrared-blocking effect of Cs x WO 3 under ultraviolet light. This research provides new insights into the manufacture of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly materials that provide excellent performance in both thermal insulation and decontamination.

In the present study, glutathione-capped gold nanoclusters (AuNCs@GSH) were prepared by an improved hydrothermal method , which showed near-infrared (NIR) emission centered at 805 nm. Besides, Ag + can induce the NIR emission transformations in a two-stage mode under different concentration ranges of Ag + . At the first stage (0.50–15 μM), a new emission at 615 nm was generated while the original NIR emission was quenched upon Ag + addition; at the second stage (15–120 μM), it shifted to 720 nm gradually along with more Ag + addition, which realized precise regulation of the emission range of metal nanoclusters from red to NIR region. The in-depth mechanism investigation revealed the transformations in both stages originated from the anti-galvanic reaction (AGR) of AuNCs toward Ag + and Ag deposition. In detail, the first stage was attributed to the formation of bimetallic gold and silver nanoclusters (Au-AgNCs); while the second stage ascribed to the Ag deposition-induced size growth and composition changes of Au-AgNCs. Therefore, the present study supplies a simple and rapid method for preparing NIR-emitted AuNCs and provides a facile approach to regulate the photoluminescence ranges based on the AGR and Ag deposition.

Lenvatinib (LEN) combined with immune checkpoint PD-1 blockade is among the most effective treatment strategies for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and has been deemed a breakthrough therapy by the Food and Drug Administration. However, this combined strategy is associated with disadvantages such as non-tumor targeted aggregation and low oral bioavailability after long-term administration of LEN, and some patients show poor responses to immunotherapy as well. To overcome these drawbacks, SP94 peptide-modified thermal-sensitive micelles (SP94-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(acrylamide- co -acrylonitrile, SP94-PEG-p(AAm- co -AN)) with an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of 43 °C were designed. The micelles were further co-loaded with LEN and IR-1061-Acridine (IR-1061-AcD) to simultaneously achieve small molecule targeted drug, photothermal and photodynamic therapy for HCC under the guidance of near-infrared second-region (NIR-II) fluorescence imaging. After intravenous injection, the co-loaded micelles (SP94-PEG-p(AAm- co -AN)/LEN/IR-1061-AcD, SPLI) showed greater accumulation at tumor sites because SP94 has a high affinity for glucoregulatory protein 78 (GRP78), which is overexpressed on HCC cells. Given these HCC-targeted effects, SPLI appeared useful for NIR-II fluorescence imaging, enabling real-time tumor monitoring and surgical resection. In addition, SPLI could extensively induce immunogenic cell death in tumors, resulting in beneficial systemic immune responses. When further combined with anti-PD-1 immunotherapy, SPLI displayed a superior potential in suppressing tumor growth and metastasis while avoiding immune inhibition. Taken together, our study suggests that the aforementioned combinational strategy could serve as a desired multifunctional approach for HCC management.
