Double-layer hollow Cu2-x/CeO2 nanozyme enhances reactive oxygen species generation via electron transfer for efficient tumor therapy

Lili Meng,Jie Zhang,Lingxue Tang,Yi Chang,Guanglei Ma,Xilin Zhang,Xiaoming Ma,Yuming Guo

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) faces critical challenges including low reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation efficiency, short-lived oxidative stress, antioxidative tumor microenvironment (TME), and other limiting factors. Although nanozymes demonstrate remarkable ROS-generating capacity, the influence of electron transfer mechanisms on nanozyme activity remains rarely reported. Herein, a double-layer hollow nanozyme Cu 2-x/ CeO 2 @ICG (CCI) with multiple catalytic activities was designed to enhance the electron transfer between Cu and CeO₂ through its unique structure, activating peroxidase (POD), oxidase (OXD), and catalase (CAT) enzyme-like activities for TME-responsive cascade catalysis. Further density functional theory (DFT) calculations reconfirm the outstanding catalytic activity. Experiments demonstrate that the CCI nanozyme significantly enhances the tumor therapeutic efficacy through the following mechanisms: (1) the distinctive double-layer hollow architecture with a higher volume specific surface area substantially enhances electron transfer, (2) the nanozyme, possessing POD- and OXD-like enzymatic activities, efficiently converts H 2 O 2 /O 2 into ·OH/·O₂ − , respectively. Meanwhile, the CAT-like activity alleviates tumor hypoxia, thereby enhancing both photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficacy and OXD-like activity, (3) Cu 2+ /Ce 4+ -mediated glutathione (GSH) depletion disrupts the ROS-antioxidant balance, and ROS levels in TME are further elevated, (4) the combination of photothermal therapy (PTT)/PDT and CDT achieves sustained ROS accumulation. This study provides a novel nanozyme catalytic strategy to overcome the limitations of traditional CDT, demonstrating the clinical potential of multimodal cascade therapy.

Gas-Sensing Study and Applications of Triboelectric Nanogenerator-Powered CuO-Modified CeO2 Nanomaterials for Ammonia Sensor at Room Temperature

Junsheng Ding,Yingang Gui,Hua Huang

Ammonia (NH3) is a common agricultural gas, and its accurate detection is critical to agricultural production. In this study, nano-CuO/CeO2composites were prepared to achieve a wide range of ammonia detection at room temperature. Characterization data verified the composite heterojunction structure of CuO/CeO2, which demonstrates an outstanding large specific surface area for ammonia detection. It provides more active sites for NH3molecules, which brings a very high response to ammonia (70.3% @100 ppm NH3), a large detection range (0.5–200 ppm NH3), and a fast response/recovery time (13 s/17 s @20 ppm NH3). Systematic testing showed that the nano-CuO/CeO2composites also exhibit excellent extended-term stability and selectivity. Further studies showed that the p-n heterojunction structure of CuO/CeO2allowed the composite to retain its gas-sensitive properties to ammonia, in addition to the improved ammonia-detection range of the composite based on the synergistic effect of these two materials. The mechanism of CuO/CeO2heterojunction nanocomposites towards ammonia detection was also elucidated from a microscopic perspective at the molecular level. Finally, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) that can be driven by wind power has been prepared, upon which the feasibility of the combination of the TENG and the ammonia sensor to realize environmental monitoring was investigated.

Rheological and micro characteristics of asphalt containing different nanocomposite ratios of CeO2/MMT during thermal-oxidative and ultraviolet aging

Chongzheng Zhu,Zhongpu Xu,Henglong Zhang,Zhichao Wang,Deqi Li,Ningyi Su,Dongmei Zhang

To enhance the long-term service performance of asphalt pavements under aging conditions, this study investigated the effects of nano-CeO 2 /montmorillonite (MMT) composites at different ratios (CM0.2, CM0.5, CM1.0) on the rheological properties and microstructural characteristics of asphalt subjected to various aging protocols. By employing dynamic shear rheological (DSR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) tests, the performance changes of nano-CeO 2 /MMT composite-modified asphalt (CMMA) under thermal-oxidative aging (rolling thin film oven (RTFOT, 163 ℃, 85 min), pressure aging vessel (PAV, 100 ℃, 2.1 MPa, 20 h)) and ultraviolet (UV, 60 ℃, 6 d) aging was systematically analyzed. The CM0.5 composite demonstrated superior anti-aging efficacy: the UV absorption capability of CeO 2 synergized with the lamellar physical barrier effect of MMT to effectively inhibit oxidative cross-linking of asphalt macromolecules. Compared to the base asphalt, CMMA with CM0.5 (CMMA0.5) exhibited significantly enhanced rheological properties, including higher complex modulus and rutting factor, along with outstanding high-temperature deformation resistance. Following UV aging, CMMA0.5 showed a 44 % reduction in the complex modulus aging index (CMAI) at 60 °C compared to the base asphalt. AFM results further confirmed the stability of the "bee structure" in CMMA0.5 before and after UV aging, with minimal variations in surface roughness, modulus, and adhesion force. The nano-composite modification strategy proposed here achieves functional complementarity between CeO 2 ’s UV absorption and MMT’s physical barrier, offering an innovative solution for improving asphalt pavement durability.

MOF-Derived CoOx–CeO2−y/C Heterojunction Synergistically Promotes the Deposition and Decomposition of Li2S in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Jia Ke,Zhang Yanan,Zuo Rui,Lu Hongbing,Ji Kemeng,Chen Mingming

The sluggish bidirectional conversion rate between Li 2 S n (2 ≤  n  ≤ 4) and Li 2 S, coupled with the uncontrolled deposition of Li 2 S, significantly impedes the realization of high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs). In this study, a metal–organic framework was employed as a precursor for the synthesis of a CoO x –CeO 2− y /C (0 <  x  < 3/2, 0 <  y  < 1/2) heterojunction via pyrolysis, which was subsequently introduced onto the cathode side of the polypropylene (PP) separator in LSBs. The modification of CoO x –CeO 2− y /C enhances the kinetics of converting of Li 2 S n to Li 2 S during the discharge process. The Tafel slope for the Li 2 S deposition reaction is reduced to 52.1 mV/dec, representing a 56.6% decrease compared to LSBs with bare PP separator. Conversely, during the charging process, the modification lowers the energy barrier for the Li 2 S decomposition reaction, with the activation energy reduced to 6.12 kJ/mol, indicating a 70.3% decrease relative to LSBs with PP separator only. Consequently, more Li 2 S is promoted to undergo decomposition. The CoO x –CeO 2− y /C heterojunction facilitates uniform deposition of Li 2 S, featuring fine particles and a uniform distribution, after brief potentiostatic charging for decomposition, thereby effectively mitigating the deactivation of sulfur species. Thanks to the enhanced bidirectional conversion of lithium polysulfides (LiPS) facilitated by the CoO x –CeO 2− y /C modification layer, the (−)Li|CoO x –CeO 2− y /C@PP|S(+) coin cell maintains a Coulombic efficiency of 90.4% after 500 cycles at a current density of 1 C, exhibiting a low capacity-decay rate of only 0.081% per cycle, thereby demonstrating excellent long-cycle stability.

Tuning the Morphology of ZnCdS@CeO2 Z-scheme Heterostructures From Core-Shell to Core-Satellite for Superior Photocatalytic Performance

Yong Liu,Baowei Shen,Sijia Zhao,Guixia Ma,Yujie Ma,Yu Xia,Xing Wang,Yuhua Feng

In addition to solar cell, photocatalysis is an alternative way for the direct utilization of the clean and sustainable solar energy. Currently, the core challenge in photocatalysis is the efficiency of the separation and transfer of the photogenerated electrons (e⁻) and holes (h⁺) in photocatalysts. Herein, continuous tuning of ZnCdS-CeO2 heterostructures via a seed-mediated growth approach yielded two typical hybrid structures: ZnCdS-CeO2 core-satellite (ZCSC I) and ZnCdS@CeO2 core-shell (ZCSC II) structures. Leveraging the Janus configuration of ZCSC I structure, a marked improvement in charge separation and transfer efficiency was observed in photocurrent and transient fluorescence tests. This enhancement should be due to the electron “sink effect” in ZCSC I structure as the spatial separation of the ZnCdS (ZCS) and CeO2 domains. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of the heterostructures was evaluated using the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) as a model reaction. Consistent with the above tests, the ZCSC I showed the highest MB degradation rate of 91% within 60 minutes. From the calculated kinetic rate constants (k values), the k value of ZCSC I structure is 4, 2.1, and 1.5 times higher than those of CeO2, ZCS, and ZCSC II structure, respectively. Through radical trapping experiments, the ZnCdS-CeO2 heterostructures were identified as Z-scheme heterojunction. This work provides solid mechanistic understanding and valuable insights for improving the catalytic efficiency of hybrid photocatalysts, which is helpful for the rational design and precise control of the hybrid photocatalysts with high catalytic efficiency and would assist their applications in diverse catalytic reactions.

Unraveling the reaction mechanisms of gasoline soot combustion over Ru/CeO2 catalysts: Mind the heterogeneity of Ru-based species

Wanchao Gong,Jinhao Li,Qing Yi,Gongde Wu,Gongjin Yang,Changlong Zheng,Xiaodong Wu,Jie Wan,Shuang Liu

Ru/CeO 2 recipes have gained increasing attention as cost-effective catalysts for soot combustion under the NO x -free and oxygen-lean conditions characteristic of gasoline particulate filters (GPFs). Nevertheless, the intrinsic heterogeneity of Ru-based species in these catalytic systems has not been adequately addressed, resulting in ambiguous structure-activity correlations and an incomplete mechanistic picture. In this study, we aim to bridge this gap by systematically investigating a model Ru/CeO 2 catalyst (∼1 wt% Ru) supported on nanocube-shaped CeO 2 . Combining kinetic analysis, transient oxygen cutoff experiments, and spectroscopic characterization, we identified two distinct types of Ru-based active entities: sub-nanometer RuO x clusters strongly interacting with the support and larger RuO 2 nanoparticles. Although both species contributed to soot combustion, the nanoparticles underwent irreversible reduction under oxygen-lean atmospheres, whereas the RuO x clusters maintained redox stability via dynamic oxygen exchange with the CeO 2 support. These findings underscore the essential role of recognizing and regulating metal species heterogeneity in catalyst design, laying a foundation for the development of more efficient and durable Ru/CeO 2 catalysts for automotive emission control.

Enhancement of the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2 using CeO2@C with oxygen vacancy‑rich from Ce-MOF pyrolysis

Zhuohan Zhang,Zhichao Yu,Lian Cong,Lixiang Ma,Yuan Li,Zhaoyang Liu,Yaokun Fu,Lu Zhang

MgH 2 exhibits significant potential as promising candidates for next-generation hydrogen storage solutions, owing to excellent hydrogen storage capacity. However, its high thermodynamic stability and kinetic barriers result in sluggish dehydrogenation kinetics and high dehydrogenation temperatures. Herein, oxygen vacancy (O V )-rich CeO 2 @C effectively weakens the Mg–H bond energy, which is manifested as the elongation of the Mg–H bond. Moreover, the O V -rich CeO 2 @C reacts with H 2 to form CeH 2.73 , which enhances hydrogen diffusion within the Mg/MgH 2 system. Meanwhile, the formation of CeH 2.73 promotes the formation of O V within the MgH 2 -CeO 2 @C, further facilitating the dehydrogenation of MgH 2 . Thereby, the synergistic effect of the O V -rich CeO 2 @C and CeH 2.73 lower the dehydrogenation temperature of MgH 2 and enhance kinetic performance. The MgH 2 -CeO 2 @C-3h behaves the most optimal dehydrogenation performance, achieving a release of 4.88   wt% H 2 within 10   min at 350 ℃. The initial dehydrogenation temperature of the MgH 2 -CeO 2 @C-3h is reduced to 274 ℃, and the dehydrogenation activation energy ( E a ) is lowered to 99.13   kJ   mol –1 , compared to 327 ℃ and 160.7   kJ   mol –1 for pristine MgH 2 . This work provides new insights into designing O V -rich metal oxide catalysts for MgH 2 .

Phosphate Modification Promotes Low-Temperature NH3-SCO over Cu/CeO2 Through Coupled Regulation of Surface Acidity and Oxygen Species

Shiqi Ma,Haoyang Li,Yuchen Huang,Kai Sun,Yuejia Huang,Yarong Fang,Yan Du

Selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia (NH3-SCO) is a promising technology for ammonia abatement. Cu/CeO2catalysts have attracted extensive attention because of their strong metal–support interaction and favorable redox properties. However, their practical application is still limited by insufficient low-temperature catalytic activity and unsatisfactory control of by-product formation. Herein, phosphate-functionalized Cu/CeO2catalysts were fabricated to regulate surface acidity and oxygen species behavior, thereby promoting low-temperature NH3-SCO activity. The optimal Acid-Cu/CeO2catalyst achieved 90% NH3conversion at 260 °C, corresponding to a 192 °C decrease in T90compared with pristine Cu/CeO2(452 °C). Kinetic analysis showed that the apparent activation energy decreased from 125.78 to 84.70 kJ mol−1after phosphoric acid modification. In addition, Acid-Cu/CeO2maintained relatively high N2selectivity and lower NOxselectivity over the tested temperature range, indicating that phosphate modification suppresses the deep oxidation of NH3to NOxby-products. Structural and surface characterization results demonstrated that Cu species remained highly dispersed on CeO2after modification, while surface phosphate species modified the local electronic environment and redistributed oxygen species. O 1s XPS and O2-TPD results revealed that phosphate modification decreased the static surface adsorbed/defect-related oxygen fraction but improved the accessibility and mobility of labile surface/subsurface or weakly bound lattice oxygen species. Py-IR and DRIFTS results further showed that phosphate modification increased Brønsted/Lewis acidity, enhanced NH3adsorption and N-H activation, and facilitated the formation and subsequent consumption of NHx/-NHO-related intermediates under reaction conditions. This work provides insights into phosphate-mediated regulation of surface acidity and oxygen mobility and offers a strategy for designing efficient low-temperature Cu/CeO2-based NH3-SCO catalysts.

Interfacial Zn-O-Ce bond modulated CeO2/ZnCo2O4 Z-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin and basic fuchsin

Jianhua Zheng,Jiayi Hou,Zhen Xu,Zhenping Guan,Xiangyu Cao,Guangming Yin

Rational design of heterojunction is of vital importance for addressing the rapid recombination problem of photogenerated charge carriers in photoreactions. Herein, a highly efficient Z-scheme heterojunction with interfacial Zn-O-Ce bonds was successfully fabricated by hybridizing 3D flower-like hierarchical ZnCo 2 O 4 (ZCO) microspheres with CeO 2 nano particles (NPs) and used to photocatalytic remove multiple pollutants. These features of Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism and chemically bonded interface not only reserved the strong oxidation–reduction ability of CeO 2 /ZCO hybrid but also speeded up electron migration from CeO 2 to ZCO. Meanwhile, the 3D hierarchical structure provided rich photocatalytic reaction sites and increased light harvesting ability. Thus, the as-prepared CeO 2 /ZCO displayed an extraordinary photocatalytic decomposition of Ciprofloxacin (CIP) and Basic Fuchsin (BF), removal rate as high as 87.6 % and 90.7 %, respectively. This work can enlighten a new insight to design versatile hetero-catalysts for solar energy conversion.

Shuttle-like CeO2/g-C3N4 composite combined with persulfate for the enhanced photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin under visible light

Wei Liu,Jiabin Zhou,Jun Yao

In this work, the shuttle-like CeO 2 modified g-C 3 N 4 composite was synthesized and was combined with persulfate (PS) for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin (NOR) under visible light. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra were used to characterize the structural and optical properties of the as-prepared catalysts. Active species trapping experiments demonstrated that additional sulfate radicals (·SO 4 - ) formed upon the addition of PS which could cooperate with superoxide radicals ( O 2 - ), holes (h + ) and hydroxyl radicals ( OH) to decompose NOR. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was also formed during the reaction and acted as an important active species. The degradation products of NOR were also identified and analyzed by using LC-MS technology , and the possible degradation mechanism and pathways were proposed and discussed. This work indicated that the shuttle-like CeO 2 modified g-C 3 N 4 coupled with PS displayed promising applications in the field of pharmaceutical wastewater purification.

Enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of perovskite electrodes by atomic layer-deposited doped CeO2 for symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells

Wenxuan Li,Xingxing Li,Chen Wang,Yansheng Gong,Rui Wang,Huanwen Wang,Jun Jin,Ling Zhao,Beibei He

Reasonable design of perovskite electrodes via surface engineering to realize high activity and good durability is an attractive strategy for advanced symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells (S-SOFCs). Herein, we highlight uniformly distributed iron doped CeO 2 (FDC) nanoparticles decorated PrBaMn 0.5 Fe 1.5 O 5+δ perovskite (PBMF/FDC) via atomic layer deposition (ALD) as symmetric electrodes for S-SOFC. It is revealed that the ALD-FDC decoration contributes to both oxygen reduction and fuel oxidation kinetics, ultimately demonstrating high electrochemical performance. After the optimized FDC decoration, the interfacial polarization resistances decrease by 69 % in air and by 27% in 5 %H 2 /Ar at 650 °C, respectively. As a demo, the peak power density of S-SOFCs with PBMF/FDC electrodes using hydrogen as a fuel delivers a high peak power density of 573 mW cm −2 and 305 mW cm −2 at 750 and 650 °C, respectively, superior to the bare PBMF based S-SOFCs. Moreover, the S-SOFCs with PBMF/FDC electrodes show long-lasting life when using humidified syngas and humidified C 3 H 8 as fuels. These findings disclose a facile ALD approach to tailor perovskite electrodes for robust and efficient electrocatalysis.

Synthesizing a novel fluorinated reduced graphene oxide-CeO2 hybrid nanofiller to achieve highly corrosion protection for waterborne epoxy coatings

Yangmin Wu,Fengwei Jiang,Yujie Qiang,Wenjie Zhao

Although fluorinated graphene (FG) inherits the physical barrier characteristic from graphene, its limited dispersibility seriously impedes its application in corrosion resistance . Here, this study aims to present a facile strategy to effectively eliminate this undesired feature of FG. We developed a well-dispersed cerium oxide grafting fluorinated reduced graphene oxide (FrGO@CeO 2 ) nanofiller to enhance the anti-corrosion properties of epoxy coating on Q235 mild steel surfaces. The in situ F-doping and hydrothermal techniques were employed to synthesize FrGO@CeO 2 nanofillers and functionalize them with waterborne epoxy coating. Combining the electrochemical results and the corrosion morphologies, the resultant nanofillers were found to significantly reinforce the protection properties of epoxy coatings due to the physical barrier effect derived from FrGO. In addition to impermeability, FrGO presented the insulating nature and endowed composite coatings to combat galvanic corrosion . Local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) indicated that cerium oxide adsorbed on mild steel surface could form a passive layer and thus further resisted the metal corrosion process. The related corrosion protection mechanism of FrGO@CeO 2 /EP coating was proposed in detail, which could provide broader platforms for designing new corrosion protection materials.
