Osteoarthritis (OA), a widespread degenerative disease characterized by cartilage destruction, has emerged as a public health challenge in the current aging society. In addition to applied steroids and surgery, near-infrared (NIR) sensitive nano-enzyme for the treatment of osteoarthritis through mitochondrial repair and cartilage protection is attractive and promising. In this study, a NIR sensitive multifunctional heterostructure (EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) decorated Au-Ag nano-jars ( [email protected] )) was introduced as an enzyme-sensitive active nanoplatform for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Molecular biology results indicated that [email protected] possesses intrinsic properties of anti-oxidative stress and was able to reduce the apoptosis rate of chondrocytes by 83.3%. The area of the intra-articular joint cavity injected with [email protected] can be elevated to 46.6 °C under NIR to promote the release of EGCG further to induce cartilage regeneration. X-ray radiography and section staining showed that [email protected] reduced cartilage damage and decreased OARSI scores by approximately 52% after 8 weeks of treatment in a surgically induced OA model. The results demonstrated that this multifunctional enzyme-like nanoplatform with a synergistic NIR sensitive property to facilitate cartilage migration and regeneration repair provides a promising OA treatment strategy. Statement of significance 1. NIR-sensitive nano-enzyme is gaining much attention in the field of biomedical materials . 2. EGCG decorated Au-Ag nano-heterostructures were utilized as NIR-sensitive nano-enzymes for the treatment of osteoarthritis through mitochondrial repair and cartilage protection. 3. The obtained multifunctional Au-Ag nano-heterostructures are promising for osteoarthritis treatment.

This paper reports the syntheses of a series of polychromatic pigments with the general formula LiAl 1- x M x (MoO 4 ) 2 (M = Fe, Pr, Ho, Nd, Er, Ce; x = 0–0.4) and the characterization of near-infrared reflectance properties. The synthesized pigments exhibited green (Pr), lavender (Nd), pink (Er) and different yellows (Fe, Ho, Ce). The XRD patterns of typical LiAl 1- x Fe x (MoO 4+δ ) 2 samples show that the prepared samples are triclinic lithium aluminum molybdate structures with space group P -1.The iron in the sample mainly existed in the form of Fe 3+ , which led to the directional growth of grains with different morphologies. The near-infrared solar reflectance (R*%) of LiAl 1- x Fe x (MoO 4 ) 2 pigments reached 94.19%. As the doping concentration of rare earth was increased, the color of the pigments gradually deepens. By introducing rare earth elements Pr, Ho, Nd, Er, and Ce into the LiAl(MoO 4 ) 2 matrix, the color of the pigment was successfully changed from white to green, lavender, pink, and yellow, indicating that doping can control the color of the pigment. Moreover, the prepared pigments had high R*% (>87%), indicating that the pigment samples have excellent thermal insulation properties and can be used as a new type of reflective thermal insulation coatings.

In the present work, an iridium (Ir) complex loaded theranostic nanoplatform was designed for high-efficiency triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) therapy. For this purpose, the Ir complex was firstly loaded on a photothermal agent of gold nanostars (GNS) by simply mixing followed by functionalization using a urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) targeted polyetherimide-AE105 peptide conjugate (P-AE105) with the formation of GNS@Ir@P-AE105. It was demonstrated that the resultant GNS@Ir@P-AE105 was a multifunctional nanoplatform with advantages of (1) NIR laser controlled release of the Ir complex; (2) precise delivery of the Ir complex to TNBC cells; (3) excellent photothermal (PT)/photoacoustic (PA)/X-ray computed tomography (CT) tri-modal imaging ability; and (4) a synergistic photothermal-chemotherapeutic effect. An in-depth investigation of the mechanism revealed that binding forces of the Ir complex–GNS and P-AE105–GNS were significantly diminished upon NIR laser irradiation, which conferred an NIR laser-responsive Ir complex release property to the nanoplatform. Moreover, the nanoplatform exerted high efficiency anti-TNBC effects via a ROS-induced p53 apoptotic pathway. Specifically, combinational photothermal-chemotherapeutic treatments stimulated intracellular ROS generation, which significantly up-regulated apoptotic-relative p53 gene expression either by causing severe DNA damage or inducing an arrest effect on the sub-G1 phase of the cell cycle. Taken together, our work provides a novel theranostic nanoplatform for efficient and simultaneous diagnosis and therapy of TNBC.

The aberrant vascularization and uneven vascular distribution stemming from rapid tumor cell proliferation culminate arouse intra-tumoral hypoxia, which substantially compromises the therapeutic response to conventional chemotherapy, as well as photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this work, we present an innovative α-NaYbF4:Tm@Cu2-xSe@ZnFe2O4-DOX nanoplatform that synergistically integrates PTT, Fenton reaction-enhanced chemodynamic therapy, PDT, and doxorubicin (DOX)-based chemotherapy under 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) light activation and weakly acidic environment-initiation. The 10 nm cubic-phase α-NaYbF4:Tm up-conversion cores were initially synthesized. Subsequently, low atomic number (Z) Cu2-xSe nanocrystal grown as photo-thermal conversion agent demonstrated significantly stronger X-radiation (X-ray) attenuation capabilities and enhanced computed tomography (CT) imaging performance compared to clinically used iopromide. Furthermore, zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) shell was obtained in hydrothermal synthesis manner. The 980 nm NIR-excited α-NaYbF4:Tm nanoparticles undergo efficient energy down-conversion, emitting photons that perfectly match the absorption spectrum of ZnFe2O4, thereby maximizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation through bandgap-engineered photoconversion. The tumor's glycolytic activity creates a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-rich microenvironment, enabling ZnFe2O4-mediated Fenton-like reactions that produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH) radicals, ultimately triggering oxidative damage and apoptotic cell death. It is noted that dual-mode photothermal therapeutic efficacy was achieved by Cu2-xSe and ZnFe2O4 as photothermal nanocrystal with up-conversion luminescence (UCL), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and CT multimodal imaging. DOX as anticancer chemotherapeutics was conjugated to form α-NaYbF4:Tm@Cu2-xSe@ZnFe2O4-DOX nanoplatforms. It remains effectively release of large quantities of DOX at tumor part conferred response to excessive lactic and carbonic acids generated in cancer cells. Our research may provide an insight for generalizing enhanced synergetic performance by NIR light-mediated PTT, Fenton reaction, PDT and chemotherapy. It is not a simple assembly of known components, but rather a multi-functional synergistic system constructed through ingenious core-shell structural design, capable of responding to near-infrared light and the tumor microenvironment. For the first time, this system seamlessly integrates up-conversion luminescence-mediated PDT, dual photothermal agent-enhanced PTT, self-supplying H2O2 Fenton reactions, and acid/heat dual-responsive chemotherapy into a single nanoplatform. Additionally, it incorporates multimodal imaging capabilities, providing an innovative and comprehensive solution to overcome the clinical challenge of tumor hypoxia.

The drug-resistant bacterial infection has seriously threatened human health and thus it is urgent to develop new and effective drugs to overcome the antibiotic resistance crisis. Herein, a near-infrared-II (NIR-II) region light-responsive Pd rough nanoshells on metal-organic framework (MOF) of UiO-66-NH 2 (UiO-66-NH 2 @Pd shell ) has been developed for the first time, which was further loaded with the photosensitizer IR780 to ultimately yield UiO-66-NH 2 @Pd shell -IR780 (UPI) as the core-shell theranostic nanoplatform. The Pd rough nanoshells demonstrate promising photothermal conversion efficiency, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, and light-enhanced catalase (CAT)-like activity. In the non-healing wound inflammatory microenvironment with overexpression of reactive oxygen species (ROS) caused by subcutaneous bacterial infection, Pd rough nanoshells in UPI transforms ROS, such as O 2 •− , into H 2 O 2 and efficiently catalyzes the decomposition of the formed and endogenous H 2 O 2 to produce O 2 . The O 2 production process could be enhanced by NIR-II light to facilitate photodynamic efficacy of IR780 to prime rapid clearance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) through biofilm inhibition, along with down-regulation of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and relief of inflammation, thus promote wound healing. Moreover, UPI exhibits negligible biotoxicity in vitro and in vivo . This work provides a method for preparing promising Pd-based nanomaterials toward subcutaneous infection treatment and wound healing.

In the present study, glutathione-capped gold nanoclusters (AuNCs@GSH) were prepared by an improved hydrothermal method , which showed near-infrared (NIR) emission centered at 805 nm. Besides, Ag + can induce the NIR emission transformations in a two-stage mode under different concentration ranges of Ag + . At the first stage (0.50–15 μM), a new emission at 615 nm was generated while the original NIR emission was quenched upon Ag + addition; at the second stage (15–120 μM), it shifted to 720 nm gradually along with more Ag + addition, which realized precise regulation of the emission range of metal nanoclusters from red to NIR region. The in-depth mechanism investigation revealed the transformations in both stages originated from the anti-galvanic reaction (AGR) of AuNCs toward Ag + and Ag deposition. In detail, the first stage was attributed to the formation of bimetallic gold and silver nanoclusters (Au-AgNCs); while the second stage ascribed to the Ag deposition-induced size growth and composition changes of Au-AgNCs. Therefore, the present study supplies a simple and rapid method for preparing NIR-emitted AuNCs and provides a facile approach to regulate the photoluminescence ranges based on the AGR and Ag deposition.

The paper describes the preparation of a fluorescent probe based on the use of up-conversion particles (UCPs) of the type NaYF 4 : Er, Yb and shelled with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) that is specific for the antibiotic enrofloxacin. The upconverted green luminescence emitted by the UCPs upon photoexcitation at 980 nm was used to locally generate a thin MIP shell around the UCPs via photopolymerization. Enrofloxacin is used as the template, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linking agent. It is found that enrofloxacin is well captured by the MIP and then quenches the fluorescence of the UCPs. Fluorescence decreases linearly in the 63 ng·L −1 to 60 μg·L −1 enrofloxacin concentration range, with a 8 ng·L −1 limit of detection. The method was applied to the determination of enrofloxacin in spiked fish samples. Recoveries ranged from 83.7 to 87.7%, with relative standard deviations between 2.0 and 5.5% (for n = 3).
Schematic of an NIR-responsive up-conversion nanoparticle probe of the NaYF 4 :Er,Yb type and coated with a MIP for fluorometric determination of enrofloxacin. The upconverted luminescence emitted by the UCPs was used to locally generate a thin MIP shell around the UCPs via photopolymerization.

A novel Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped BiOBr photocatalyst with 3D flowerlike hierarchical architectures were successfully fabricated through self-assembled process without any templates under hydrothermal conditions, and the structure and properties of the photocatalysts were characterized. The results indicate that Yb 3+ ions and Er 3+ ions are successfully doped into the lattice of BiOBr, and the as-obtained photocatalyst can respond the NIR light and emit red and green light due to the up-conversion effect of the rare-earth ions. Meanwhile, with co-doped Yb 3+ /Er 3+ ions content increasing, oxygen vacancy concentration in the photocatalyst rises. The oxygen vacancy will form the intermediate energy band, which can decrease the photon energy required for electronical transition, and thus help to utilize the luminous energy generated by up-conversion luminescence. Moreover, the appropriate introduction of defects (oxygen vacancy defect and impurity atom) can further promote the transfer and separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. Hence, Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped BiOBr photocatalyst exhibits enhanced photocatalytic properties under broad spectrum (UV/vis/NIR) excitation, which is about 4 times as high as that of pure BiOBr.

Bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance have become a global healthcare crisis. There is an urgent need to develop visualized therapeutic platforms that allow accurate imaging of the bacterial infections, successful eradication of bacteria and real-time monitoring of treatment progress. In this work, we report a novel NIR imaging and synergistic antibacterial nano-system ( [email protected] ) for resistance bacterial infection therapy. The multifunctional nano-system is fabricated by a MIL-101 core, which is covalently connected with Vancomycin and modified with targeted antimicrobial peptides LL-37 on the surface. The ability of monitoring the progress of infection treatment and effective promoting wound healing of bacterial infection are proved by in vivo MRSA -infected mice models. Under the environment of endogenous H 2 O 2 overexpression and slightly acid bacterial infection, the excellent Fenton-like reaction activity of [email protected] could effectively catalyze the decomposition of H 2 O 2 to produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which trigger highly efficient chemo-dynamic therapy (CDT) and tissue protection effect. By combining CDT with antibacterial peptides and antibiotics therapy, special targeting and synergistic killing of MRSA are successfully achieved in in vitro and in vivo antibacterial assays with excellent biocompatibility. Due to this, this study proposes a novel, high-efficient, multifunctional imaging and therapy system, which will open a new avenue for the design of synergistic antibacterial and diagnostic platforms in the future.

Fe 3+ is a promising near-infrared (NIR) activator ion due to its tunable emission and non-toxicity, which has attracted growing interest. However, developing high-performance broadband NIR-emitting phosphors based on Fe 3+ remains a significant challenge. In this work, we present Fe 3+ -activated A 2 LuSbO 6 (A = Ba/Sr/Ca) double perovskite phosphors, which exhibit unusually long-wavelength NIR emission (>850 nm). By adopting a cation substitution strategy at the A-site, we designed the gradual replacement of large-radius ions with small-radius ions, achieving controllable tuning of emission from 847 nm to 937 nm. This substitution process simultaneously reduces structural symmetry and induces octahedral distortion, which breaks the spin-forbidden transition of Fe 3+ and enhances luminescence performance. However, the continuous emission redshift leads to a large Stokes shift, which suppresses Fe 3+ luminescence. The combined effect of these two factors results in optimal luminescence efficiency in Sr 2 LuSbO 6 :1.0 %Fe 3+ (SLSO) sample, with internal/external quantum efficiencies (IQE/EQE) of 94.8 %/54.5 %. To further enhance luminescence performance, we introduced the rare-earth Yb 3+ , establishing an efficient Fe 3+ →Yb 3+ energy transfer (ET) channel that reduces non-radiative transition losses. Compared with the Yb 3+ -free sample, the SLSO:1.0 %Fe 3+ , 3.0 %Yb 3+ sample exhibits a broadened FWHM from 115 nm to 180 nm, enhanced IQE and EQE of 98.1 % and 56.4 %, respectively, and 13 % improved thermal stability. Finally, a pc-LED device based on the SLSO:1.0 %Fe 3+ , 3.0 %Yb 3+ phosphor demonstrates potential for applications in NIR spectroscopy analysis, night vision, biomedical imaging, and other fields. This work lays a foundation for further research on strategies to regulation the optical properties of Fe 3+ -activated NIR phosphors.

Porphyrins are popular photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy of diseases. However, the poor water solution and short absorption wavelengths of porphyrins limit their clinical application. In this work, a novel worm-like porphyrin covalent organic framework (Por-COF) with excellent dispersibility and near-infrared absorption was prepared via a facile method. First, a pH-responsive macromolecule was prepared using Schiff base bonds between porphyrin and terephthalaldehyde, and the spatial arrangement of macromolecules was controlled to prepare Por-COF. Second, the hypoxia-responsive drug tirapazamine (TPZ) and tumor-targeted hyaluronic acid (HA) were loaded to Por-COF through the electrostatic effect to prepare a multifunction nanomedicine (Por-COF@TPZ/HA) that could simultaneously produce abundant reactive oxygen species and high temperature via808 nm laser irradiation. TPZ was cascaded for the synergistic therapy of cancers. In vitro cytotoxicity showed that the inhibition rate of cell activity in the Por-COF@TPZ/HA + Laser group was 1.2 times higher than that in the Por-COF/HA + Laser group. In vivo experiments also demonstrated that the aggravated tumor hypoxia caused by photodynamic therapy could activate TPZ to achieve high-efficiency chemotherapy. Combined photodynamic–photothermal therapy and chemotherapy had an outstanding synergistic effect. This work provides a promising method for Por-COF preparation and a feasible strategy for the synergistic therapy of cancers.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), one representative 2D nanomaterial, has recently emerged as a unique platform in the biomedical field. However, its application in drug delivery systems should be further exploited. Here, we report a novel tumor cell targeting and lysosomal acidic environment/NIR laser dual responsive drug delivery system for synergetic chemo-photothermal treatment of cancer cells. The MoS 2 nanosheets were loaded with chemotherapy drug doxorubicin (DOX) and coated with polydopamine (PDA) layer. Then, thiolated aptamer AS1411 and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were modified onto MoS 2 nanosheets through Michael addition reaction to construct [email protected] 2 nanosheets. The aptamer modification endowed the nanoplatform with targeting ability to breast cancer MCF-7 cells. MoS 2 and PDA converted 808 nm NIR laser into heat and played the role of photothermal therapy (PTT). Tumor lysosomal acidic environment and NIR laser irradiation accelerated the release of DOX from the nanosheets. The nanocarrier Apt-PEG-PDA-MoS 2 showed good biocompatibility, and [email protected] 2 showed synergetic chemo-photothermal therapy effects with significantly enhanced anti-tumor efficacy, suggesting that this MoS 2 -based drug delivery platform is promising for targeted and synergetic treatment of cancer.
