Unraveling the reaction mechanisms of gasoline soot combustion over Ru/CeO2 catalysts: Mind the heterogeneity of Ru-based species

Wanchao Gong,Jinhao Li,Qing Yi,Gongde Wu,Gongjin Yang,Changlong Zheng,Xiaodong Wu,Jie Wan,Shuang Liu

Ru/CeO 2 recipes have gained increasing attention as cost-effective catalysts for soot combustion under the NO x -free and oxygen-lean conditions characteristic of gasoline particulate filters (GPFs). Nevertheless, the intrinsic heterogeneity of Ru-based species in these catalytic systems has not been adequately addressed, resulting in ambiguous structure-activity correlations and an incomplete mechanistic picture. In this study, we aim to bridge this gap by systematically investigating a model Ru/CeO 2 catalyst (∼1 wt% Ru) supported on nanocube-shaped CeO 2 . Combining kinetic analysis, transient oxygen cutoff experiments, and spectroscopic characterization, we identified two distinct types of Ru-based active entities: sub-nanometer RuO x clusters strongly interacting with the support and larger RuO 2 nanoparticles. Although both species contributed to soot combustion, the nanoparticles underwent irreversible reduction under oxygen-lean atmospheres, whereas the RuO x clusters maintained redox stability via dynamic oxygen exchange with the CeO 2 support. These findings underscore the essential role of recognizing and regulating metal species heterogeneity in catalyst design, laying a foundation for the development of more efficient and durable Ru/CeO 2 catalysts for automotive emission control.

Typical crystal face effects of different morphology ceria on the activity of Pd/CeO2 catalysts for lean methane combustion

Yanyan Lei,Wenzhi Li,Qingchuan Liu,Qizhao Lin,Xusheng Zheng,Qifu Huang,Shengnan Guan,Xinhua Wang,Chengxin Wang,Fengyu Li

The catalytic efficiency of CeO 2 carriers and the catalytic properties of palladium (Pd) nanocrystals loaded on different morphology CeO 2 carrier were studied for lean methane (CH 4 ) combustion. The catalytic activity of simple CeO 2 carriers was ranked in the order of rod-CeO 2 (r-CeO 2 ) > cube-CeO 2 (c-CeO 2 ) > octahedral-CeO 2 (o-CeO 2 ). After the Pd species was loaded on CeO 2 , 90% of CH 4 was converted at 348 °C catalyzed by Pd/octahedral-CeO 2 (Pd/o-CeO 2 ) with (1 1 1) crystal faces, which had much higher catalytic activity comparing with Pd loaded on c-CeO 2 with (1 0 0) crystal faces and r-CeO 2 with (1 1 0) and (1 0 0) crystal faces. The results of XRD , HRTEM , EDS , H 2 -TPR, XPS and elemental mapping showed that the Pd species in the form of Pd 0 and PdO were highly dispersed on surface of all CeO 2 carriers. Most importantly, quasi In-situ XPS results convinced that Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ion pairs played an important role in the catalytic combustion of low-concentration methane by adsorbing or releasing oxygen. Compared with r-CeO 2 and c-CeO 2 , the concentration of Ce 3+ on the surface of o-CeO 2 carrier was greatly increased when the Pd species were present, which indirectly reflected that the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the carrier surface also increased. Consequently, the high catalytic activity of Pd/o-CeO 2 is not only related to the high dispersion of Pd 0 and PdO species on the surface of the catalyst, but also closely related to the synergistic interaction between Pd species and (1 1 1) specific faces of o-CeO 2 exposing.

Towards the Efficient Catalytic Valorization of Chitin to N-Acylethanolamine over Ni/CeO2 Catalyst: Exploring the Shape-Selective Reactivity

Yifan Zheng,Lijun Lu,Wei Chen,Anmin Zheng,Aiwen Lei,Abhishek Dutta Chowdhury

Global warming and rising waste content collectively accelerate the development of renewable-derived ‘low-carbon’ chemical technologies. Among all abundant renewables, marine-/food-waste-derived chitin, the only nitrogen-containing sustainable biomass, contains the uniqueN-acetylglucosamine units, which could be synthetically manipulated to a plethora of organonitrogen chemicals. Herein, we report the efficient one-step catalytic valorization of chitin toN-acylethanolamine over cost-effective Ni/CeO2-based materials, which interestingly demonstrate shape-based reactivity based on CeO2supports. In general, all three catalysts (Ni on cubic-, rod-, and polyhedral-shaped CeO2supports) were active for this reaction, but they differed in their catalytic efficiency and time-monitored reaction profiles. Herein, Ni on cubic-shaped CeO2delivered relatively better and stable catalytic performance, along with its rod-shaped counterpart, while the polyhedral CeO2-based material also delivered decent performance. Such interesting catalytic behavior has been corroborated by their physicochemical properties, as revealed by their characterization studies. Herein, to establish an appropriate structure-property-reactivity relationship, multimodal characterization techniques and control mechanistic experiments have been performed. This work demonstrates a concept to reduce the consumption of primary carbon resources and increase the utilization of secondary waste materials to facilitate a smooth transition from a linear economy (cf. cradle-to-grave model) to a circular economy (cf. cradle-to-cradle model). Keywords:chitin;waste valorization;heterogeneous catalysis;ceria;functionalization of C–C bonds

A heterogeneous double chamber electro-Fenton with high production of H2O2 using La–CeO2 modified graphite felt as cathode

Suhang Jiang,Lijuan Tan,Yujia Tong,Lijian Shi,Weixing Li

Hydrogen peroxide synthesis by electro-reduction of O 2 to substitute the current anthraquinone process has attracted a great deal of attention. Low oxygen utilization rate and low hydrogen peroxide production remain obstacles to electro-Fenton application. In situ H 2 O 2 generated by electrochemical reaction depends on the electrochemical performance of the cathode and the structure of the reactor. Here, novel graphite felt (GF) modified by La-doped CeO 2 (La–CeO 2 ) was developed as a cathode. A new double chamber electro-Fenton reactor was proposed, where an organic ultrafiltration membrane was used to prevent H 2 O 2 from spreading to the anode. The effects of hydrothermal temperature, time and urea concentration on the electrochemical properties of graphite felt were investigated. The accumulated concentration of H 2 O 2 on the modified cathode reached 218.4 mg·L –1 in 1 h when the optimal conditions of hydrothermal temperature 120 °C and urea concentration 0.55% (mass) in 24 h. The degradation rate of methyl orange reached 98.29%. The new electro-Fenton reactor can efficiently produce hydrogen peroxide to degrade various organic substances and has a high potential for treating wastewater in the chemical industry.

Enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline solution by constructing strong metal-support interaction on Pd-CeO2-x-NC hybrids

Yalin Yu,Zhihao Dong,Ling Tan,Nannan He,Rong Tang,Fang Jiang,Huan Chen

Diminishing the size of metal nanostructures can significantly improve the performance of catalysts. However, the self-aggregation of small particles is still an insurmountable obstacle, resulting in the unfavorable stability and recyclability. Herein, we designed and fabricated the Pd-CeO 2-x -NC catalyst though an accurate deposition strategy to downsize the Pd particle to sub-nanometer level and enhance its running stability. The CeO 2-x nanoclusters were firstly dispersed on the nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets. Further, the active Pd sub-nanoclusters were accurately scattered on the surface of CeO 2-x ascribing to the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Pd and CeO 2-x , which was beneficial to promote the catalytic activity. Subsequently, the high oxidation state Pd n + species were formed due to the electron transfer from Pd to CeO 2-x caused by the SMSI effect. Strikingly, the HER performance of Pd-CeO 2-x -NC was surprisingly correlated with the ratio of Pd n + , suggesting Pd n + acted as the dominant active species. Besides, the SMSI effect stabilized the valence state of active Pd n + species and prevented the sub-nanometer Pd clusters from aggregation, which played a vital role for the enhanced stability of the hybrid catalyst. This synthetic process described here is contributed to prepare various nanostructured catalysts with satisfactory stability through the direct targeting strategy.

Effect of Pd doping in (Fe/Ni)/CeO2 catalyst for the reaction path in CO2 oxidative ethane dehydrogenation/reforming

Xiuquan Li,Zhongqing Yang,Li Zhang,Ziqiang He,Ruiming Fang,Ziqi Wang,Yunfei Yan,Jingyu Ran

The catalytic reaction of C 2 H 6 with CO 2 provides an opportunity to use shale gas and the greenhouse gas as source materials to produce ethylene through oxidative dehydrogenation or produce syngas through dry reforming . In this work, the reaction characteristics of ethane with CO 2 on Fe/Co/Ni/Cu monometallic catalysts and Pd-doped bimetallic catalysts were studied through activity test, kinetic analysis , catalyst characterization and DFT calculation. It is found that Pd–Fe 6 /CeO 2 has a high and stable C 2 H 4 selectivity of 80.4%, which is suitable for oxidative dehydrogenation reaction, while Ni 6 /CeO 2 has a large ethane/CO 2 conversion and a high CO selectivity of 96.5%, which is suitable for dry reforming reaction. For Fe-based catalyst, the doping of Pd form double active component structure. It only reduces the energy barrier of ethylene formation and CO 2 direct activation to provide O∗, but also increases the energy barrier of ethylene deep dehydrogenation, thus increasing the conversion of reactants and selectivity of C 2 H 4 . For Ni-based catalysts, the doping of Pd forms the alloy structure, which reduces the energy barrier of O∗-assisted dehydrogenation reaction and increases the conversion of reactants, but increases the energy barrier of C–C bond cleavage and CO 2 activation reaction, which reduces the selectivity of reforming to syngas.

Ti species regulated CuO/CeO2 catalyst for efficient simultaneously NH3-SCR denitration and CO oxidation under oxygen-rich conditions

Yiqing Zeng,Weilong Rong,Shule Zhang,Qin Zhong,Zhaoxiang Zhong

Synergistic control of multiple pollutants has high benefits during the control of emissions from fuel utilization, and catalysis can contribute to efficient removal of multiple pollutants. In this work, Ti species regulated CuO/CeO 2 (Cu/Ce) catalyst was constructed to efficient simultaneous NH 3 -SCR denitration and CO oxidation under oxygen-rich conditions. It is found that the introduction of Ti species into Cu/Ce catalyst induces the formation of three-dimensional pore structure and promotes the phase transition from crystalline to amorphous, which significantly enhances the specific surface area and the dispersion of CuO and CeO 2 . The well dispersed CuO and CeO 2 species provide a larger number of adsorbed sites for CO and NO and enhance the Cu-Ce interaction, which can contribute to reducing the competitive adsorption between CO and NO and the formation of a richer surface oxygen vacancies. Owing to above improvements, the Ti species regulated Cu/Ce catalyst can achieve more than 90% removal efficiency of NO x and CO at 148–218 °C, and the active temperature windows widened by 36 °C in comparison with Cu/Ce catalyst. Through this work, we expect to shed some light on the synergistic control of CO and NO x under oxygen-rich conditions.

Fabricating the ternary CeO2@CNTs/CdSe composite with synchronously enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic activity toward water-soluble pollutants removal

Liang Li,Shao-zhong Hu,Ting Huang,Nan Zhang,Yong Wang

Constructing heterogeneous catalyst with different bandgaps is a prospect way to realize efficient charge transfer of catalytic redox reaction. Semiconductor-based catalyst as a prospective material can effectively solve sewage issues under light irradiation, but the efficiency is greatly influenced by the recombination rate of photoelectrons and holes. In this work, cerium dioxide (CeO 2 ) nanoparticles (NPs) were grown in-situ on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which can maintain the pollutant removal efficiency of pure CeO 2 NPs and enhance the adsorption intensity under visible light for CeO 2 @CNTs composite. Furthermore, the introduction of cadmium selenide (CdSe) was conducive to establish built-in electronic field in the ternary CeO 2 @CNTs/CdSe catalyst, which effectively enhanced the catalytic activity of CeO 2 @CNTs/CdSe. In comparison to CNTs, CdSe, CeO 2 and CeO 2 @CNTs composite, the ternary CeO 2 @CNTs/CdSe catalyst exhibited higher photocurrent intensity, lower recombination of photoelectrons and holes (e - /h + ) pairs, indicating much better photocatalytic activity. CeO 2 @CNTs/CdSe as photocatalyst displayed excellent adsorption ability for Congo red (CR), which contributed to increase the transparency of reaction solution and improve the utilization rate to light, the evaluated degradation efficiency of CR achieved 83.58 % and the reduction ratio of Cr(VI) was nearly 100 %. This work confirms that CeO 2 @CNTs/CdSe composite with excellent adsorption and photocatalytic ability is a promising photocatalyst material in wastewater treatment.

Interfacial engineering of nickel selenide with CeO2 on N-doped carbon nanosheets for efficient methanol and urea electro-oxidation

Tingting Yue,Yue Shi,Yaxin Ji,Jingchun Jia,Ying Chang,Junxiang Chen,Meilin Jia

The design of low cost, high efficiency electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reactions (MOR) and urea oxidation reactions (UOR) is a pressing need to address the energy crisis and water pollution. In the present work, we developed Cerium dioxide (CeO 2 ) and nickel selenide (Ni 0.85 Se) nanoparticles integrated into three-dimensional N -doped carbon nanosheets to be used as efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for MOR and UOR. By optimizing the selenization temperature, the CeO 2 -modified Ni 0.85 Se obtained at selenization temperature of 550 °C (CeO 2 -Ni 0.85 Se-550-NC) has the best MOR and UOR electrochemical performance. The CeO 2 -Ni 0.85 Se-550-NC potential only requires 1.309 V (MOR) and 1.294 V (UOR) to reach 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. The DFT study reveals that CeO 2 -Ni 0.85 Se-550-NC has the best reaction path with the synergistic effect between CeO 2 and Ni 0.85 Se. The outstanding catalytic performance of CeO 2 -Ni 0.85 Se-550-NC may be due to the cointeraction between CeO 2 and Ni 0.85 Se, allowing more defects that function as catalytic sites while promoting fast electron transfer in the N -doped carbon substrate.

CO2 Reforming with Ethanol for Syngas Production over SiO2-M@CeO2 Catalysts (M: Cu,Ni): Impact of Active Metal

Ting Li,Yuhao Tian,Xiaoli Yan,Weijie Cai

Graphical CO 2 Reforming : Transition metal-based SiO 2 -Ni@CeO 2 catalyst with typical core@shell structure exhibited the better activity/stability in CO 2 reforming with ethanol reaction compared to SiO 2 -Cu@CeO 2 sample. It is of great significance to design the high-performance catalysts with good anti-sintering and coke-resistance properties which can efficiently convert undesirable greenhouse gas CO 2 with bio-ethanol into high value-added syngas. To be addressed this issue, a series of SiO 2 -M@CeO 2 (M: Cu, Ni) catalysts with typical core@shell structure were prepared via a strong electrostatic adsorption technique. Interestingly, Ni-based catalyst exhibited the higher activity towards ethanol dry reforming at the relatively low temperature. Meanwhile, SiO 2 -Ni@CeO 2 catalyst presented good stability after a 50 h tests while a serious deactivation occurred for SiO 2 -Cu@CeO 2 within 20 h reaction due to heavy carbon deposition and reactor blockage. Herein, the higher catalytic performance of SiO 2 -Ni@CeO 2 catalyst compared to SiO 2 -Cu@CeO 2 sample was attributed to the combination effect of its mesoporous structure, higher Ni dispersion as well as stronger Ni-Ce interaction as depicted by BET, TEM, XPS, H 2 -TPR and XRD findings. This work might provide meaningful information to other reforming processes involving coke formation and active metal sintering problems.

Facile Preparation and Characterization of Polyaniline and CeO2 Co-Decorated TiO2 Nanotube Array and its Highly Efficient Photoelectrocatalytic Activity

Chen Chunmao,Zhao Danchen,Zhou Qingxiang,Wu Yalin,Zhou Xianqi,Wang Hongyuan

In the present work, polyaniline and CeO 2 co-decorated TiO 2 nanotube arrays (PANI/CeO 2 /TiO 2 NTAs) were facilely prepared by an electrochemical method. The as-prepared materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The photoelectrocatalytic activity of as-prepared materials was investigated with tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) as the target analyte, and the data showed that PANI/CeO 2 /TiO 2 NTAs resulted in much higher photoelectrocatalytic efficiency than that of other materials. Under optimal conditions, the degradation rate of TBBPA reached a maximum value over 96% in 120 min under simulated solar irradiation. The results indicated that CeO 2 and PANI co-modified TiO 2 NTAs could narrow the band gap, expand the response from ultraviolet (UV) to visible region, increase the amount of active free radicals, inhibit the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs, and finally enhance the degradation efficiency towards TBBPA owing to the presence of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and PANI. Moreover, the degradation reaction followed the first-order kinetics, and degradation rates of the repeated experiments were all over 92% for ten runs. All these results indicated that this novel catalyst earned great potential as a powerful photoelectrocatalyst for the removal of TBBPA and other pollutants.

Synthesis of novel CoOx decorated CeO2 hollow structures with an enhanced photocatalytic water oxidation performance under visible light irradiation

Siman Fang,Songsong Li,Lei Ge,Changcun Han,Ping Qiu,Yangqin Gao

Cobalt oxide decorated octahedral ceria hollow structures (CoOx/CeO2) with various contents of CoOx nanoparticles were prepared via a simple chemical impregnation method. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPV) and transient photovoltage spectroscopy (TPV). The photocatalytic oxygen evolution via water oxidation was investigated for the as-prepared CoOx/CeO2 nanocage composites. The photocatalytic results indicate that the CoOx/CeO2 nanocage composite with 1 mol% CoOx shows the highest photocatalytic activity. The excellent photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the improved visible-light absorption of CoOx/CeO2 composites and the efficient separation of excited electron–hole pairs between CoOx and CeO2, which can effectively enhance the lifetime of charge carriers in the CoOx-modified samples and then improve the oxygen evolution activity. Cobalt oxide is expected to be an excellent water oxidation co-catalyst for semiconductor photocatalysts.
