Encapsulation of Zanthoxylum schinifolium essential oil by complex coacervation with whey protein isolate and gum Arabic for improved stability and controlled release

Jie Zhao,Jiating Chen,Tanghui Liu,Dong Zhang,Chang Su,Hai Chi,Hongrui Chen,Jie Tang,Xingzhong Zhang

Zanthoxylum schinifolium essential oil (ZSEO) exhibits remarkable antioxidant and antibacterial biological activities and is widely used in the food industry. However, its low water solubility, high volatility, and susceptibility to decomposition by light, heat, and oxygen complicate its transport and storage. Microencapsulation of ZSEO is an effective method that can overcome these limitations and expand its application scope. To enhance stability and preserve functionality of ZSEO, ZSEO-loaded microcapsules were produced by complex coacervation of whey protein isolate (WPI) and gum Arabic (GA), followed with freeze-drying. So far, no comprehensive research has been conducted on the method of microencapsulating ZSEO using WPI/GA. Through research, the optimal pH for the formation of WPI/GA (1:1, w/w) complex coacervates was found to be 3.9. The ZSEO-in-water (O/W) emulsions stabilized by whey protein isolate (WPI) were prepared, which exhibited a uniform size of around 200 nm and showed enhanced stability with increasing WPI contents (3.0–6.0 wt%). After complex coacervation with GA, the resulting microcapsules showed improved physical properties and higher encapsulation efficiency as the ratio of WPI/GA complex wall material increased. The ZSEO-loaded microcapsules still maintained their ability to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) free radicals compared to free ZSEO, especially performing the optimal antioxidant activity at a core-to-wall ratio of 5:8 (w/w). Release kinetics studies confirmed controlled and delayed release of ZSEO from the microcapsules in various food simulants (aqueous, ethanolic and aerial environments). This work demonstrated that microencapsulation via WPI/GA complex coacervation was an effective strategy to encapsulate essential oils with high antioxidant activity and controlled release.

Effect mechanism of H3PO4 on the formation and transformation of persistent free radicals in biochar

Gao Yajie,Gao Yuan,Li Aimin

Persistent free radicals (PFRs) in biochar have attracted wide attention due to their multifaceted roles in the environment. The regulation of PFRs in biochar is not only beneficial to broaden its application potential, but also eliminates its environmental risks. However, as a common biochar modification reagent, phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ) has not been studied in the field of PFRs regulation. Herein, this study systematically investigated the effect of H 3 PO 4 on PFRs in biochar under various conditions. The results indicated that H 3 PO 4 promoted the formation of PFRs in biochar at low pyrolysis temperature (< 500 °C), owing to the positive effect of catalytic cross-linking on the degradation of biomass precursor. Yet, H 3 PO 4 reduced PFRs in biochar at high pyrolysis temperature (≥ 500 °C), since the capture of H∙ or HO∙ by PO∙ and the steric hindrance changed by H 3 PO 4 , which caused the rearrangement and polycondensation of carbon structure. H 3 PO 4 also favored carbon-centered PFRs as the dominant type. The ingredients of biomass precursor, including cellulose, Fe, Ti, protein, etc., contributed to different effects on PFRs under H 3 PO 4 modification. This study provided new insights into the roles of H 3 PO 4 on the formation and transformation of PFRs in biochar, coupled with regulation strategies in the practical application. Graphical

Study on the preparation of non-alcoholic kombucha beverages by re-fermenting kombucha beverages with Acetobacter and Lactobacillus

Yingjia Tong,Kexin Qi,Linyuan Zhou,Weiming Liu,Ying Zhang,Jin Wang,Yuting Zhang,Qunyi Tong

Kombucha is a traditional fermented beverage derived from sweetened black tea using a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY), which faces consumption restrictions due to the small amount of ethanol produced during the fermentation process. This study proposes an innovative method to produce non-alcoholic kombucha beverages (NAKB) by re-fermenting sterilized kombucha with Acetobacter sp. GDMCC 1.152 (AB) and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum GDMCC 1.191 (LP). Results showed that both AB alone and AB+LP combined fermentation could reduce the ethanol content (from 0.66% to 0%), mainly because AB oxidizes ethanol into acetic acid via the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Sensory evaluation showed that NAKB produced by AB + LP had the best flavor and overall acceptability. Compared to the acetic acid produced by AB, the lactic acid produced by LP has a milder acidity and a higher taste threshold. Additionally, co-refermentation significantly enhanced bioactive compounds, with total polyphenol content increased from 215.32 mg GAE/L to 336.33 mg GAE/L, and total flavonoid content increased from 163.38 mg CE/L to 196.35 mg CE/L, alongside elevated antioxidant activity. These findings highlight the efficacy of bacterial re-fermentation in producing NAKB with improved sensory and functional properties, offering a viable strategy to meet diverse consumer demands.

Synthesis of a thermal/pH responsive dual-network cellulose-based composite hydrogel for controlled drug release

Jingwei Gong,Leilei Hou,Chee Ching Yern,Shuangwu Huang,Ching Kuan Yong,Gunathilake Thennakoon M. Sampath Udeni,Hai Nguyen Dai,Hock Chuah Cheng

Cellulose-based hydrogels have attracted more and more attention in recent years. This study aimed to develop a biodegradable, dual-responsive cellulose-based hydrogel with sustained drug release properties. To achieve this goal, hydrogels with an interpenetrating-network structure based on cellulose derivatives with varying mass ratios were designed, and their controlled release properties for tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) were also investigated. First, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was grafted onto hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) via a mediated reaction between N-hydroxysuccinimide and 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodimide hydrochloride. Subsequently, an interpenetrating strategy was employed by introducing N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) monomer as the second network through free radical polymerization into the preformed cellulose-based gel (HPC-co-CMC), thereby constructing a smart dual-network hydrogel (HPC-co-CMC/PNIPAM). The rheology tests, fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal analysis, mechanical strength assessment, and drug loading capacity evaluations confirmed the stable formation of chemical cross-linking. The ratio of HPC to CMC had a significant effect on swelling capacity, TH release behavior, and antibacterial properties. In vitro studies, HPC-co-CMC/PNIPAM gels performed outstanding biocompatibility and antioxidant properties. The cumulative release behavior of TH indicated that an optimal HPC/CMC ratio could effectively prolong drug release time, and the dual-network HPC-co-CMC/PNIPAM hydrogels successfully prevented burst release. Furthermore, the pH/temperature-responsive behaviors were also evaluated through swelling ratio measurements. At a temperature of 37 °C and pH 5.0, the TH release rate reached its maximum cumulative release over 65 h. Therefore, HPC-co-CMC/PNIPAM gels have the great potential for advanced drug delivery applications.

Micronized Prinsepia utilis Royle Seed Powder as a Natural, Antioxidant-Enriched Pickering Stabilizer for Green Cosmetic Emulsions

Chuanjun Ye,Kangfu Zhou,Zhicheng Ye,Yazhuo Shang,Feifei Wang

The valorization of agricultural byproducts into functional cosmetic ingredients is a promising strategy for sustainable formulation development. In this work, rawPrinsepia utilisRoyle seed residue powder (RPURSRP) which was discarded after oil pressing was upcycled and micronizedPrinsepia utilisRoyle seed powder (MPURSRP) was obtained by micronization as an eco-friendly Pickering stabilizer. The physicochemical properties of MPURSRP have been studied comprehensively. The results have shown that the MPURSRP (20.28 ± 0.00 μm) exhibited a spherical shape, which is significantly smaller than the RPURSRP (61.49 ± 2.28 μm). The MPURSRP particles tend to reside at the interface between oil and water, allowing them to function as emulsifiers that promote the formation of Pickering emulsions. The emulsifying properties of MPURSRP were investigated systematically. The results revealed that the MPURSRP displayed a better emulsifying performance for non-polar oils. Meanwhile, the existence of polyphenols—an endogenous substance of thePrinsepia utilisRoyle seed, endows the prepared Pickering emulsion with good antioxidant activity. As the MPURSRP concentration increased from 0% to 3.0 wt%, more MPURSRP adsorbed at the oil–water interface, and the DPPH radical scavenging rate of the emulsion increased from 9.99 ± 0.63% to 91.71 ± 4.22% (p< 0.001). By upcycling agricultural waste into amphiphilic particles with interfacial properties, we establish a green strategy for stabilizing Pickering emulsions with endogenous antioxidant functionality, offering meaningful guidance toward sustainable colloid systems. This work aligns with the growing demand for natural, bioactive ingredients in green cosmetic formulations.

Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent-Based Ultrasonic-Assisted Simultaneous Extraction of Phenolic Acids and Flavonoids from Erigeron breviscapus and Its Extraction Mechanism Analysis

Leshou Zhang,Lili Yu,Shengchun Yang,Xiaofang Yang,Shaodui Ye,Haiwei Ma,Jiayi Hu,Yong Liu,Zhenjuan Duan,Xiaodong Wen

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs), as a newly developed class of environmentally benign solvents, offer a promising alternative to conventional toxic organic solvents for the extraction of valuable bioactive compounds from medicinal plants. This study developed an innovative green approach for the simultaneous extraction of active ingredients from Erigeron breviscapus (E. breviscapus) by utilizing ultrasound-assisted natural deep eutectic solvent extraction (UAE-NADES). Response surface methodology was employed to systematically optimize the extraction parameters. Under the optimized extraction conditions, the total extraction yield of phenolic acids and flavonoids obtained using UAE-NADES was 68.66 mg/g, demonstrating superior performance compared to that of traditional organic solvents. Additionally, the extraction mechanism of the representative bioactive constituent, scutellarin, established by the proposed method was investigated by using density functional theory (DFT), revealing that hydrogen-bonding and van der Waals forces exerted a significant influence on the extraction process. More importantly, NADES exhibits the capacity for multiple recycling and reuse cycles. Finally, the UAE-NADES strategy was applied to achieve the simultaneous extraction of target bioactive constituents from E. breviscapus under varying light qualities following supplementary lighting. This study provides a novel strategy for the green, sustainable, and simultaneous extraction of multiple bioactive constituents from medicinal plants via recyclable NADES.

Extraction of light-colored lignin nanoparticles from Radiata pine using ternary deep eutectic solvents

Junxian Xie,Jiahui Xie,Junjun Chen,Shiyun Zhu,Jun Xu,Haitao Yang

Light-colored lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) have shown great potential in their conversion and high value-added applications. However, the direct extraction of light-colored LNPs from lignocellulosic materials remains a significant challenge in the field. In this study, we developed a very effective strategy for rapid extraction (1 h) of light-colored LNPs from radiata pine using a new ternary deep eutectic solvent (TDES) composed of benzyltrimethyl-ammonium chloride (BTMAC), formic acid (FA) and maleic acid (MA). The results indicated the obtained average particle size of LNPs ranged from 127 nm to 171 nm. The extraction process was optimized to achieve high yields (84.7 %), purity (94.1 %) and low polydispersity index (PDI = 1.96) while maintaining the light-colored LNPs (brightness ISO 24.15 %), which was 9.7, 10.5 and 2.5 folds higher than Kraft lignin, alkali lignin and lignosulfonate, respectively. Further evaluation revealed that the IC50 of the three LNPs samples were less than 60 μg·mL −1 , exhibiting significant antioxidant activity. In addition, the introduction of MA could protect the β-O-4 linkage from excessive cleavage and recondensation as well as avoid the deepening of LNPs color. This work not only presents an effective method for extracting light-colored LNPs but also highlights their advantageous properties, paving the way for sustainable product development utilizing lignocellulosic biomass.

Liposome-integrated ultrasound coupling subcritical water extraction for enhanced the efficiency and stability of Phyllanthus emblica polyphenols

Shuhui Liang,Xinyi Luo,Zexin Chen,Yushi Gong,Yong Hu,Fenglin Song,Yongguang Bi,Dongmei Li,Juan Guo

Ultrasound coupling subcritical water extraction (USWE) was developed to extract polyphenols from Phyllanthus emblica pomace (PPEPs), and extraction parameters affecting the yield of PPEPs were systematically optimized. USWE was comprehensively evaluated in terms of extraction parameters, yield, antioxidant capacity, major bioactive components, and infrared characteristics of PPEPs, and compared with four other extraction methods. Microstructural changes in the pomace were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to elucidate the interactions between the extraction process and the plant matrix. Finally, to address the issues of the instability of PPEPs and their low bioavailability, liposomal encapsulation was performed and the physicochemical properties were evaluated. Results demonstrated that the yield of PPEPs from USWE was 1.8-fold and 1.35-fold higher than those from solvent extraction (SE) and subcritical water extraction (SWE), respectively. Furthermore, PPEPs from USWE exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity and higher levels of six major bioactive compounds. SEM analysis revealed a significant increase in porosity and enlarged pores in USWE-treated pomace. Additionally, Phyllanthus emblica polyphenol liposomes (PPEPL) were prepared by thin-film dispersion technique. PPEPL showed a high encapsulation efficiency of 83.07 ± 0.09 % and retained structural integrity after 4 weeks of storage at 4 °C. PPEPL exhibited enhanced antioxidant activity compared to free PPEPs. The IC 50 values for scavenging DPPH·, ABTS· + , and hydroxyl radicals were 3.2-, 3.3-, and 1.6-fold lower, respectively. In summary, integrating USWE with liposome technology provides an efficient strategy for obtaining stable, high-quality bioactive PPEPs.

Mussel-inspired mesoporous polydopamine coated bismuth sulfide nanocomposites with excellent photothermal conversion, antibacterial and antioxidant properties

Qianqian Huang,Xian Wang,Mingzhu Zhang,Na Xu,Jia Wang,Xinqiang Tan,Xiaotian Li,Tianjun Ni,Wei Guo,Yunhui Yan

The scarcity of antibiotic alternatives has posed a serious threat of the global spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Achieving a delicate balance between antibacterial activity and anti-inflammatory efficacy within infected tissues is crucial for promoting efficient wound healing. Herein, a novel near-infrared (NIR)-responsive nanomaterial (BSMC NPs) is fabricated via the in-situ growth of mesoporous polydopamine (MPDA) on the surface of Bi 2 S 3 , followed by the loading of curcumin (Cur) into the mesopores and onto the surface through π-π stacking interactions. This organic-inorganic hybrid system exhibits excellent photothermal conversion efficiency as well as prominent antioxidant capacity. Upon NIR light irradiation, the photothermal effect triggers the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by both Bi 2 S 3 and MPDA, thereby enabling efficient bacterial eradication. Conversely, in the absence of light stimulation, the inherent antioxidant properties of MPDA and Cur allow for the rapid scavenging of excessive ROS, thus exerting potent anti-inflammatory effects. The pH- and NIR-dual responsive release profile of Cur has been experimentally verified. Antibacterial assays reveal that BSMC NPs achieve inhibition rates of 98.5 % against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and 92.4 % against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) under 808 nm laser irradiation. The underlying antibacterial mechanism is attributed to the increased permeability of bacterial membranes and leakage of intracellular contents, which are induced by localized hyperthermia and ROS burst. Collectively, this work provides novel insights into the rational design of multifunctional biomaterials integrating antioxidant, antibacterial, and photothermal therapeutic functionalities.

Study on the Structure and Antioxidant Properties of Seamless Knitted Fabrics with Antioxidant Fibers

Lei Yan,Lu Chang,Shuhan Shen,Zimin Jin,Mingtao Zhao

The antioxidant properties of seamless knitted fabrics with antioxidant fibers determine their antioxidant effects. In this paper, we used five kinds of raw yarn materials, namely mint nylon filament, tea carbon nylon filament, coffee carbon nylon filament, collagen nylon filament, and nylon filament, and chose three kinds of fabric microstructure, namely weft flat knit, 1+1 false rib, and 1+3 false rib, to obtain 15 seamless knitted samples with antioxidant fiber by establishing the sample scheme through the full factorial experimental method and weaving them on the seamless loom. DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging tests were performed on the 15 seamless knitted samples of antioxidant fiber according to the standards, and the results showed that, in terms of the type of yarns, the antioxidant performance of tea carbon nylon filament was the best, followed by coffee carbon nylon filament and mint nylon filament, and the antioxidant performances of collagen nylon and ordinary nylon yarn were relatively weak; in terms of the fabric structure, the 1+1 false rib structure was slightly better than the weft flat knit structure, while the 1+3 false rib structure was relatively poor. Overall, the antioxidant performance of sample No. 5, with the 1+1 false rib structure and tea carbon nylon thread, was the best.

Self-Aggregation-Induced Polymerization for Constructing Multifunctional Dynamic Zwitterionic Hydrogels

Xiaohui Li,Jiawei Gao,Linran Gao,Yuxuan Jin,Minglun Cai,Jinglin Liu,Yongjun Zhang,Jia Li,Tengling Wu,Mahmoud Elsabahy,Li Chen,Hui Gao

Zwitterionic hydrogels have attracted considerable attention as advanced biomaterials. However, the fabrication of traditional zwitterionic hydrogels typically relies on harsh polymerization conditions, and their backbone structures are non-biodegradable. In this study, we develop a self-aggregation-induced polymerization (SAIP) mechanism that enables the spontaneous formation of multifunctional zwitterionic hydrogels under mild aqueous conditions, utilizing a rationally designed lipoic acid-carboxybetaine monomer with lipoic acid-modified hyaluronic acid (LAHA) crosslinker. This SAIP mechanism is driven by the synergistic interaction between the strongly hydrophilic zwitterionic moieties and hydrophobic 1,2-dithiolanes, promoting monomer self-aggregation into high-concentration reactive microenvironments, thus facilitating efficient ring-opening polymerization without external catalysts or stimuli. The incorporation of LAHA as a crosslinker results in the formation of a stable zwitterionic hydrogel, distinguished by its mild preparation conditions, rapid spontaneous gelation (116 s), and controlled depolymerization through dynamic disulfide bonds. Furthermore, the resulting hydrogel demonstrates high water content (>76%), robust mechanical properties (compressive stress up to 3.86 MPa), exceptional antioxidant activity (>90% DPPH scavenging), high biocompatibility, and superior living cell encapsulation and protection. This study provides a fundamental understanding of hydrogel formation through the SAIP mechanism and advances the development of zwitterionic hydrogels, making the resulting hydrogel an attractive candidate for biomedical applications.
