Large-scale functionalization of biomedical porous titanium scaffolds surface with TiO2 nanostructures

Qian Lei,Yu Peng,Zeng Jinquan,Shi Zhifeng,Wang Qiyou,Tan Guoxin,Ning Chengyun

Construction of functional porous titanium scaffold is drawing ever growing attention, due to its effectiveness in solving the mechanical mismatch between titanium implant and bone tissue. However, the poor water permeability as well as the problem in achieving uniform surface modification inside scaffold hinders the further biomedical application of porous titanium scaffold. In this study, largescale functional TiO 2 nanostructures (nanonetwork, nanoplate and nanowire) were constructed on three-dimensional porous titanium scaffolds surface via an effective hydrothermal treatment method. These nanostructures increase the hydrophilicity of the titanium scaffold surface, facilitating the cell culture medium to penetrate into the inner pore of the scaffold. Zeta potential analyses indicate that the surface electrical properties depend on the nanostructure, with nanowire exhibiting the lowest potential at pH 7.4. The influence of the nano-functionalized scaffold on protein adsorption and cell adhesion was examined. The results indicate that the nano-functionalized surface could modulate protein adsorption and bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) adhesion, with the nanowire functionalized porous scaffold homogeneously promoting protein adsorption and BMSCs adhesion. Our research will facilitate future research on the development of novel functional porous scaffold.

Effect of Morphology on the Thermodynamic function of A- TiO2 Nano-Materials

Jing Luo,Xiaohua Yu,Shiyou Li,Ruijia Diao

The thermodynamic functions of A-TiO2 nano-materials with different shapes (nanowires, nanotubes, nanoflakes and nanoparticles) were investigated by Faraday's law and open-circuit potentiometry. The results showed that the A-TiO2 nanoparticles have the highest chemical activity (nanoparticles > nanoflakes > nanotubes > nanowires) at the same size, and the corresponding free energies and enthalpy are AG=-895.59kJ • mol -1 , A S=76.09J • K -1 mol -1 , ΔH=847.21kJ • mol -1 ; However, the stability of A-TiO2 nanowires is the best (nanowires > nanotubes > nanoflakes > nanoparticles), and the ionic diffusion coefficient is lower than other structures (nanowires < nanotubes < nanoflakes < nanoparticles). There are more surface-active spots in nanometer-sized A-TiO2, which makes it more likely to lose electrons in the equilibrium state. This work intends to provide a reference for the design and analysis of various nanostructured materials.

Single-Atom Pd Supported on TiO2 for the Photocatalytic Production of Hydrogen

Zhi-shi Qiu,Tong Zhou,Yi-wen Ma,Yu-xiang Ma,Tian-ping Lv,Jian-hong Zhao,Jin Zhang,Yu-min Zhang,Qing-ju Liu

Sunlight splitting water to produce hydrogen has become a feasible solution to the energy crisis and environmental problems. As one of the most popular photocatalysts, TiO2 still has many advantages that attract many researchers. Single-atom loaded TiO2 has garnered significant attention and usage as a water splitting photocatalyst, but still there is an urgent requirement to discover a stable, efficient, and cost-effective approach to achieve stable single-atom catalysts. In this investigation, a one-step microwave hydrothermal method was employed to fabricate Pd single-atom loaded TiO2. The prepared samples exhibit particle sizes in the range of 6–7 nm, showcasing excellent dispersion and a substantial specific surface area. The Pd atoms are securely anchored, forming stable Pd–O bonds with the support material. The resulting Pd–TiO2 catalyst exhibited an impressive hydrogen evolution rate of 24.6 mmol g–1 h–1, accompanied by an AQY of 23.4% at 365 nm. This research presents a viable and economical strategy for producing single-atom loaded catalysts with high efficiency.

Reinforced photoelectrochemical properties of nanostructural TiO2/C/SiO2 integrated on conductive Ti3SiC2

Zhiwei Wang,Hongfeng Yin,Yun Tang,Qin Hou,Chen He,Hudie Yuan

Herein, we constructed an ordered nanoporous embedding nanoparticles composite by anodic oxidation of Ti 3 SiC 2 in fluorine containing organic electrolyte. Compared to anodized Ti which resulted in TiO 2 nanotubes , the anodized Ti 3 SiC 2 (ATSC) led to the formation of nanostructured TiO 2 /C/SiO 2 composite. The morphologies of oxides in the composite also varied with different anodization parameters. The ATSC could be directly used as an electrode without further processes, which possessed a superior structure and composition with a visible-light photocurrent density of 7.56 μA cm −2 , initial reversible area capacity of 6.18 F cm −2 , which were respectively 1.32 and 6.87 times higher than those of the anodized Ti (AT), respectively. The ATSC synthesized by such a feasible fabricating strategy shows favorable photoelectrochemical properties and remarkable stability, and may broaden the bifunctional material prospects of anodized MAX phases.

Abating ammonia emission from poultry manure by Pt/TiO2 modified corn straw

Yunhong Jiao,Jie Huang,Jing Hu,Anthony J. Weatherley,Wei Liu,Chaoyu Li,Zhiling Ma,Bing Han

Poultry manure is a significant source of ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions, which not only poses detrimental impacts on human well-being and the ecological system, but also leads to economic losses in the agricultural industry. Herein, we modified corn straw (CS) with 1 wt% Pt/TiO 2 catalysts using a low-temperature partial-oxidation technology to mitigate NH 3 emissions from poultry manure. It was found that Pt/TiO 2 can enable exothermic processes to occur at lower temperatures by reducing the activation energy. Under optimal modification conditions of 220 °C, the NH 3 uptakes of modified CS samples were markedly greater compared to those of the original CS. Addition of 20–50% modified CS to poultry manure resulted in significant reductions of 54.1–98.6% in NH 3 emissions compared to the control. Mechanistic studies indicate that NH 3 adsorption on the modified CS is mainly driven by the presence of acidic and alkaline functional groups, while surface area and pore structure have a negligible effect. XPS combined with NH 3 -TPD reveals that the formation of amide and amine bonds contributes to the excellent stability of adsorbed NH 3 . H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD, and d -band theory suggest that strong metal-support interactions between Pt and TiO 2 could be particularly crucial in catalyzing CS modification. This study proposes an environmentally sustainable and economically viable solution for abating NH 3 emissions from poultry manure, thereby addressing crucial environmental and economic concerns in the agricultural sector.

Versatile Application of TiO2@PDA Modified Filter Paper for Oily Wastewater Treatment

Chang-Hua Zhao,Yu-Ping Zhang,Li Wan,Xin-Xin Chen,Pei Yuan,Ling-Bo Qu

Although membrane separation technology has been widely used in the treatment of oily wastewater, the complexity and high cost of the membrane preparation, as well as its poor stability, limit its further development. In this study, via the vacuum-assisted suction filtration method, polydopamine (PDA)-coated TiO2nanoparticles were tightly attached and embedded on both sides of laboratory filter paper (FP). The resultant FP possessed the typical wettability of high hydrophilicity in the air with the water contact angle (WCA) of 28°, superoleophilicity with the oil contact angle (OCA) close to 0°, underwater superoleophobicity with the underwater OCA greater than 150°, and superhydrophobicity under the water with the underoil WCA over 150° for five kinds of organic solvents (carbon tetrachloride, toluene, n-hexane, n-octane, and iso-octane). The separation efficiency of immiscible oil/water, oil-in-water, and water-in-oil emulsions using the modified FP is higher than 99%. After 17 cycles of emulsion separation, a high separation efficiency of 99% was still maintained for the FP, along with good chemical and mechanical stability. In addition, successful separation and purification were also realized for the oil-in-water emulsion that contained the methylene blue (MB) dye, along with the complete degradation of MB in an aqueous solution under UV irradiation.Keywords:TiO2@PDA;filter paper;oil/water separation;emulsion separation;purification

Antibacterial Nanocellulose-TiO2/Polyester Fabric for the Recyclable Photocatalytic Degradation of Dyes

Jiacheng Tan,Hangjun Deng,Fangfang Lu,Wei Chen,Xiuping Su,Hairong Wang

In this paper, we report an antibacterial, recyclable nanocellulose–titanium dioxide/polyester nonwoven fabric (NC-TiO2/PET) composite for the highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of dyes. The NC-TiO2was loaded onto the surface of flexible PET nonwoven fabric through a simple swelling and dipping method. The NC-TiO2in the particle size range of ~10 nm were uniformly attached to the surface of the PET fibers. The NC-TiO2/PET composite has the ability to achieve the stable photocatalytic degradation of dyes and presents antibacterial properties. The degradation rates to methylene blue (MB) and acid red (AR) of the NC-TiO2/PET composite reached 90.02% and 91.14%, respectively, and the inhibition rate ofEscherichia coliwas >95%. After several rounds of cyclic testing, the photocatalytic performance, antibacterial performance, and mechanical stability of the NC-TiO2/PET composite remained robust.

TiO2-Decorated Photocatalytic Nanofiltration Membranes for Enhanced Self-Cleaning and Separation Performance

Yinshan Xie,Lilantian Cheng,Fei Liu,Jian Li

Advanced nanofiltration (NF) processes have been extensively utilized to handle wastewater generated in the dyeing industry. However, NF membranes inevitably incur fouling issues during their operation procedure. Herein, TiO2 nanoparticles were employed as an additive in the aqueous phase in an interfacial polymerization (IP) process to fabricate the thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) NF membrane. With the introduction of TiO2 nanoparticles, a rougher and more hydrophilic membrane surface was obtained. The optimal TFN membrane with 1.5% TiO2 decoration exhibited a pure water permeability of up to 14.32 L m–2 h–1 bar–1, which was 1.88 times higher than that of the pristine thin-film composite membrane. Moreover, the obtained NF membrane maintained high rejections toward dye molecules (99.7% for Congo red, 99.5% for reactive blue 19, 99.7% for xylene brilliant cyanin G, and 99.1% for methyl blue), considerable salt rejections (44.5% for NaCl, 91.2% for Na2SO4, 54.1% for MgCl2, and 82.8% for MgSO4), and satisfactory stability during the 72 h long-term operation. The exceptional self-cleaning ability of resultant TFN membranes under UV irradiation offered an inspired method for establishing photocatalytic self-cleaning membrane to treat wastewater.

Cu/TiO2 adsorbents modified by air plasma for adsorption–oxidation of H2S

Yongqi Yan,Xinyu Yang,Ping Ning,Chi Wang,Xin Sun,Fei Wang,Peng Gao,Kai Li

In this study, non-thermal plasma (NTP) was employed to modify the Cu/TiO 2 adsorbent to efficiently purify H 2 S in low-temperature and micro-oxygen environments. The effects of Cu loading amounts and atmospheres of NTP treatment on the adsorption-oxidation performance of the adsorbents were investigated. The NTP modification successfully boosted the H 2 S removal capacity to varying degrees, and the optimized adsorbent treated by air plasma (Cu/TiO 2 -Air) attained the best H 2 S breakthrough capacity of 113.29 mg H 2 S/g adsorbent , which was almost 5 times higher than that of the adsorbent without NTP modification. Further studies demonstrated that the superior performance of Cu/TiO 2 -Air was attributed to increased mesoporous volume, more exposure of active sites (CuO) and functional groups (amino groups and hydroxyl groups), enhanced Ti-O-Cu interaction, and the favorable ratio of active oxygen species. Additionally, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated the main reason for the deactivation was the consumption of the active components (CuO) and the agglomeration of reaction products (CuS and SO 4 2− ) occupying the active sites on the surface and the inner pores of the adsorbents.

Preparation and Performance Study of Self-Cleaning TiO2/Kaolin-Finished Cotton Fabric

Zhao Qiang,Zhang Yunting,Liu Zhenjiang,Ma Huiyan,Li Yan,Gao Xiaoping

TiO 2 /kaolin was first synthesized by using ultrasound-sol–gel method and then deposited onto the surface of cotton fabrics through two dipping and two rolling process. To investigate the properties of this TiO 2 /kaolin-finished cotton fabric, TiO 2 /kaolin/cotton composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrum and energy dispersive spectrometer, while the surface morphologies of the cotton fabrics were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The whiteness, air permeability, breaking strength and elongation of TiO 2 /kaolin/cotton composites were, respectively, measured and the results showed that all these parameters decreased slightly with the appearance of TiO 2 /kaolin. The UPF value of TiO 2 /kaolin/cotton composites was significantly enhanced to 100+ , even if after soaping for 30 times, which might be due to the synergistic effect of kaolin and TiO 2 . In addition, the performance such as hand feel attributes, softness, smoothness and stiffness were measured by PhabrOmeter, respectively. The stiffness of all finished fabrics was obviously better than that of the unfinished cotton. However, the softness and smoothness of finished fabrics were slightly decreased compared to unfinished cotton. Rhodamine B was used as a test contaminant to qualitatively assess the self-cleaning properties of the TiO 2 /kaolin-finished cotton fabric. The removal of Rhodamine B indicated that the TiO 2 /kaolin-finished fabric exhibited excellent photocatalytic properties. This study illustrates the great potential of the low-cost kaolin powder as an efficient finishing agent for the fabric finishing process, and meanwhile provides a novel suggestion for fabric modification.

Degradation of Organic Dyes by the UCNP/h-BN/TiO2 Ternary Photocatalyst

Weijun Xie,Yue Zhang,Lei Xu,Dan Xie,Li Jiang,Yanmao Dong,Yan Yuan

In this study, upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with a flower-like morphology were prepared using a urea coprecipitation method. A ternary photocatalyst was first prepared using a solvothermal method involving the use of titanium oxide (TiO2), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), and UCNPs (Y2O3, Yb3+, and Tm3+) as raw materials. The surface morphology, crystal structure, and functional groups of these materials were then characterized and analyzed through scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry, and other techniques. Photocatalytic experiments were also conducted to investigate the effects of different catalyst types, raw material doping ratios, pH values, and catalyst quantities on the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). The results indicated that doping with h-BN and UCNPs reduced the band gap width of RhB, increased its light absorption rate, and decreased the recombination rate of its photogenerated electrons and holes so that the photocatalytic degradation effect reached 100% within 2 h. After five experimental cycles, the 30% UC-BN-Ti photocatalyst remained highly durable and stable. To investigate the effects of different trapping agents on the degradation of RhB, benzoquinone, isopropanol, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt were used as free-radical-capturing agents. The results indicated that •O2– was the primary active species in the degradation process. Finally, the pathway and mechanism of the degradation of RhB through ternary composite photocatalysis were identified.

Unraveling the Origin of Facet-dependent Photocatalytic H2O2 Production over Anatase TiO2

Yuhang Gao,Xu Zhang,Chaogang Ban,Ran Feng,Jixiang Hou,Jiazhi Meng,Guo Yang,Chunlang Gao,Lu Xia,Peijie Ma,Kaiwen Wang,Xianlin Qu

A typical photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production reaction primarily comprises three processes: photoabsorption, electron–hole separation and transfer, and surface oxygen reduction reaction. Previous researches have focused on revealing the origin of the facet effect in photocatalysis. However, an comprehensive understanding of the structure–activity relationship for facet effect at atomic scale remains limited. Herein, we provide fundamental insights into photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production performance of three types of TiO 2 with predominantly exposed (101), (100), or (001) facets. The TiO 2 nanosheets with exposed (001) facet exhibit the highest H 2 O 2 yield rate of 649.2 μmol g -1 h -1 , which is 29.2 and 5.2 times higher than those of TiO 2 with (101) facet and (100) facet, respectively. Band alignment, charge carrier behavior and surface reaction are studied systematically and correlated with unique surface atom arrangement. Even with narrowed light-response range, short charge carrier lifetime, inferior charge separation, and inconspicuous specific surface area, the (001) facet exposed TiO 2 still performs best. The experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the under-coordinated Ti atoms on (001) surface serve as active sites and have strong interaction with oxygen molecule, while the Ti atoms on (101) and (100) surface can hardly adsorb and activate oxygen molecule. Hence, we suggest that the significantly lowered barrier for oxygen molecule adsorption and activation results from intrinsic surface sites rather than band-alignment and charge carrier behavior plays the principal role in this case. This work may provide semiquantitative insights into the origin of facet effect in photocatalysis.
