Carbon quantum dot (CQD) decorated semiconductor materials have become promising photocatalysts in photocatalysis, with a chance to solve energy and environmental crises. Red emissive carbon quantum dots (R-CQDs) have excellent photoluminescence (PL), upconversion, narrowed band structure, electron-accepting, and transmission properties compared to other colors emitting CQDs. In this work, we use the as-synthesized R-CQDs to decorate P25 (R-CQDs/P25) for highly enhanced visible-light photocatalysis. The results show that the photocatalytic performance of the R-CQDs/P25 composites is considerably enhanced with the increasing amount of R-CQDs in the visible-light region. The red emissive upconversion R-CQDs play dual roles as a cocatalyst to separate the photogenerated carriers and an upconversion converter from lower energetic photons to high energetic photons. Various measurements reveal that the R-CQD/P25 photocatalysts have a narrowed band gap, improved charge transfer efficiency, and lower recombination rate, synergistically endowing the R-CQDs/P25 composites with excellent photocatalytic performance. The R-CQD/P25–2.5 composite exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity, which is ∼10 times higher for hydrogen evolution and ∼20 times higher for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) compared to pure P25, and its apparent quantum yield (AQY) is 4.94% under 450 nm monochromatic light. This work opens the door for rational design of different fluorescence CQDs and their potential application for solar hydrogen production in a low-cost noble-metal-free system.

Semiconductor photocatalysis is an ideal and sustainable solution to effectively remove Tetracycline (TC). Herein, a hierarchical flexible nanofibrous film (NF) heterojunction photocatalyst of BiOBr/TiO 2 was fabricated via a combination of electrospinning and solvothermal method, obtaining the two-dimensional (2D) BiOBr nanosheets uniformly anchored on the surface of one-dimensional (1D) TiO 2 nanofiber, and the amount of BiOBr significantly influences the physicochemical properties of the heterojunction photocatalyst, the optimal sample of BT-2 manifests large pore size and high surface area, prominent visible light response ability and narrow band gap as well as outstanding charge separation efficiency, thus achieves significantly enhanced photocatalysis activity for TC degradation, which is about twice higher than that of the pristine TiO 2 NF. More importantly, the BT-2 sample also displays high reusability and stability over a 10-cycle period and can be easy to recover. Meanwhile, the radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance characterization reveal that ·O 2 – and h + occupy an irreplaceable role in degrading TC. Moreover, regarding the analysis of intermediates and density functional theory calculations, the TC photodegradation mechanism and pathways are proposed. Our finding offers a prospective solution for designing BiOBr/TiO 2 heterojunction recyclable photocatalysts for efficient TC photodegradation.

Although cesium halide lead (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have excellent photovoltaic properties, their unstable characteristics are major limitations to application. Previous research has demonstrated that the core–shell structure can significantly improve the stability of CsPbX3 QDs and form heterojunctions at interfaces, enabling multifunctionalization of perovskite materials. In this article, we propose a convenient method to construct core–shell-structured perovskite materials, in which CsPbBr3@CsPb2Br5 core–shell micrometer crystals can be prepared by controlling the ratio of Cs+/Pb2+ in the precursor and the reaction time. The materials exhibited enhanced optical properties and stability that provided for further postprocessing. Subsequently, CsPbBr3@CsPb2Br5@TiO2 composites were obtained by coating a layer of dense TiO2 nanoparticles on the surfaces of micrometer crystals through hydrolysis of titanium precursors. According to density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results, the presence of surface TiO2 promoted delocalization of photogenerated electrons and holes, enabling the CsPbBr3@CsPb2Br5@TiO2 composites to exhibit excellent performance in the field of photocatalysis. In addition, due to passivation of surface defects by CsPb2Br5 and TiO2 shells, the luminous intensity of white light-emitting diodes prepared with the materials only decayed by 2%–3% at high temperatures (>100 °C) when working for 24 h.

Introducing oxygen vacancies (Vo) into TiO 2 photocatalyst has been considered an effective strategy for improving solar photocatalytic activity. In this study, we used dodecylamine as a structure-directing agent to prepare amorphous hydrated TiO 2 spheres through a simple hydrolysis reaction. After calcination at 500 °C for 2h, we successfully synthesized spherical anatase TiO 2 with Vo mediated by N doping. By decorated with 1 wt% Pt as a cocatalyst, the resulting Vo-containing N-TiO 2 -2h spheres exhibited excellent performance under ultraviolet–visible illumination. The catalyst showed a hydrogen evolution rate of 1183.97 μmol g -1 h −1 , which is 1.4 times greater than that of the commercial anatase TiO 2 spheres with the same specific surface area. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the Vo-containing Pt/N-TiO 2 -2h for hydrogen generation is attributed to that N-doping-induced Vo, which can produce electron trapping states to inhibit the direct recombination of photogenerated carriers. The presence of Pt co-catalysts further suppresses the recombination of electron–hole pairs, accelerating the rate of the entire photocatalytic reaction.

Superhydrophobic surfaces with smart adhesion has aroused increased interest. However, all reported surfaces can only display switchable adhesion in air. Herein, we report a fluoroalkylsilane-modified TiO 2 nanotube surface that has switchable adhesion in both air and oil as it is alternately Ultraviolet-irradiated and heated. The transition is not synchronous; a longer Ultraviolet-irradiation time is needed to obtain high adhesion in oil than in air, and the transition is more difficult in polar oil than in non-polar oil. The reversible transition attributes to the combined effect between the nanostructure and surface chemical variation, the out-of-step transition is attributed to different roles of the exposed naked TiO 2 , which offers water-adhesive force in air and oil-adhesive/water-repellent force in oil. This works reveals the effect of environmental media on surface-wetting/adhesion transition, which is helpful for design of novel adhesive surfaces to meet practical requirements.

In this study, a photocatalytic biochar-TiO 2 (C–Ti) composite was prepared using lignin as carbon precursor, and blended with PVDF polymer to fabricate PVDF/C–Ti MMMs via non-solvent induced phase inversion. The prepared membrane demonstrates both 1.5 times higher initial and recovered fluxes than the similarly prepared PVDF/TiO 2 membrane, suggesting the C–Ti composite can help maintain higher photodegradation efficiency and better anti-fouling performance. In addition, the comparison of PVDF/C–Ti membrane against pristine PVDF membrane show that the reversible fouling and photodegradation reversible fouling of BSA increased from 10.1% to 6.4%–35.1% and 26.6%, respectively. And the FRR of PVDF/C–Ti membrane was 62.12%, 1.8 times that of PVDF membrane. The PVDF/C–Ti membrane was also applied for lignin separation, where the rejection to sodium lignin sulfonate was maintained at about 75%, and the flux recovery ratio after UV irradiation reached 90%. The demonstrated the advantages of PVDF/C–Ti membrane in photocatalytic degradation and antifouling performance.

Utilizing ambient humidity to drive electron motion in nanomaterials and generate usable electricity is promising for self-powered electronics and sensors. This paper developed a humidity gradient-driven microgenerator (HGDM) by coating a cobalt hydrogel on part of the TiO 2 nanoparticle film and employing multi-walled carbon nanotubes as electrodes. The humidity gradient was established between the bottom hygroscopic hydrogel and the top electrode in contact with ambient air. Results demonstrated that the TiO 2 /Co hydrogel HGDMs can achieve an open-circuit voltage of 0.95 V at 20 °C and 50–80% relative humidity (RH). The single generator (size: 5 × 4 cm 2 ) exhibited a current output of approximately 0.1 mA, which remained stable for over 100 h with less than 1% decay. The increase in hydrogel films’ height first increased then decrease the performance, and the optimal value was provided. By alternately introducing 10% and 80% RH air humidity cycles, the generator responded rapidly with a wet/dry output ratio over 400, and the delay time maintained within 1.0 s after 1000 cycles. The output performance dropped severely when the air temperature was higher than 40 °C. In practical applications, a series of 5–7 micro-generators successfully delivered consistent power supply to LED lights and calculators for a duration exceeding one week, and the voltage output can be recovered to its initial value after less than 5 h of recharging. Mechanistic studies have revealed that the primary driving force for power generation is the humidity gradient rather than vapor evaporation. Because the diameter of the nanopores (around 200 nm) are much smaller than the Debye length of the double electric layer (960 nm), ion-selective permeability in TiO 2 nanochannels is also important which can prevent nearly 90% OH – from passing through the channels. This hydrogel microgenerator exhibits wide-ranging application prospects, and our study contributes to enhancing its performance and elucidating the mechanism.

With the advent of 5G era, the high millimeter-wave frequency band, poor signal penetration and large loss make 5G communication more dependent on low dielectric constant materials. Therefore, the research and development of low dielectric polymer materials has become a hot spot in recent years. With its good chemical corrosion resistance, thermal stability, high dispersion and high mobility, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) as a high function fine inorganic material is doped in polymer systems to improve the electrical properties of polymer composites. In recent years, a large number of studies have used spherical TiO 2 nanoparticles doped on the polymer matrix, however, there is almost no research on doping nanolinear TiO 2 nanoparticles on the polymer matrix. Here, TiO 2 nanowires were prepared by hydrothermal method, and the prepared TiO 2 nanowires were added to polyimide (PI). TiO 2 /PI monolayer and three-layer composite films with good dielectric and mechanical properties were prepared by in-situ polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectoscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the structure and test the properties of the composites. During the initiation process, the thermal initiation reaction of the composite membrane was completed. The composite film with good mechanical properties and excellent dielectric properties were obtained by adding titanium oxide nanowires, which can meet the requirements of its use in the field of microelectronic devices.

Benefiting from the wide-range absorption and adjustable energy gap, carbon dots (C-dots) have attracted a great deal of attention and they have been used to sensitize semiconductor nanocomposites to boost the efficiency of energy conversion devices, while there is still a lack of fundamental understanding of the interaction between such materials and their influence on the catalytic activity on the reaction process. In this study, C-dots were used to modify TiO2 to form a direct Z-scheme (DZS) junction for enhancement of the photocatalytic activity. The C-dot/TiO2 composite was prepared by ultrasonication at room temperature through coupling between the Ti–O–C bond and electrostatic interaction. The C-dots can dramatically enhance the absorption of the composite by forming the DZS, and the composite is enabled to generate more free radicals, which facilitate ∼10 times higher photocatalytic activity compared to that of TiO2. As a proof of concept, the as-prepared C-dot/TiO2 was used for textile wastewater dye degradation. This study provides an efficient approach for room-temperature preparation of C-dot/TiO2 composites with high photocatalytic activity.

Practical applications of CsPbX3nanocrystals (NCs) are limited by their poor stability. The formation of a heterojunction between CsPbX3NCs and oxides is an effective means to protect perovskite from polar solvents and other external factors. Significantly improving the stability and photocatalytic properties of the core/shell perovskite is very important for its application in photoelectric and photocatalytic technology. Here, we report the synthesis of asymmetrical CsPbBr3/TiO2core–shell heterostructure NCs at the single-particle level by hot-injection liquid-phase synthesis and sol–gel method, where each CsPbBr3NCs is partially covered by titanium dioxide. We tested not only the optical properties of the material but also the electrochemical impedance and photocurrent density of the material in sodium sulfate solution. It is shown that the type II arrangement is generated at the heterogeneous interface, which greatly facilitates the separation of electron–hole pairs and increases the carrier transport efficiency. Compared with CsPbBr3NCs, CsPbBr3/TiO2has higher photocatalytic efficiency. More crucially, due to the protection of the titanium dioxide shell, the product has higher long-term stability in humid air compared with bare CsPbBr3NCs. The asymmetrical core–shell heterostructure prepared in this study not only improves the stability of CsPbX3NCs but also provides some ideas for optoelectronic device applications and TiO2-based photocatalysts.

Mxenes, a general term for a novel class of two-dimensional carbon–nitrogen compounds, which attracted extraordinary attention because of their unique electrochemical property. In this paper, an Ag-TiO 2 /MXene composite material was prepared for paraquat (PQ) detection by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). It was found that the detection limit reached as low as 0.01 μM and linear range was from 0.05 to 15 μM (split into two sections: 0.05 to 1 μM and 1 μM to 15 μM). The Ag-TiO 2 /MXene composite electrode material exhibits excellent anti-interference properties to the species including the ions such as Cu 2+ , Na + , Ca 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cl − , SO 4 2− and biomass molecules such as glucose, ascorbic acid and uric acid. In the presence of organophosphorus pesticides, the electrode also showed good anti-interference. The excellent paraquat detection capability of the Ag–TiO 2 /MXene electrode material should be attributed to the synergistic effect obtained by decorating Ag and TiO 2 on MXene. In conclusion, the functionalization of MXenes through surface-modification provided a feasible route for ultrasensitive electrochemical sensors construction.

Engineering the surface structure of semiconductor is one of the most promising strategies for improving the separation and transfer efficiency of charge, which is a key issue in photocatalysis. Here, we designed and fabricated the C decorated hollow TiO2photocatalysts (C–TiO2), in which 3-aminophenol-formaldehyde resin (APF) spheres were used as template and carbon precursor. It was determined that the C content can be easily controlled by calcinating the APF spheres with different time. Moreover, the synergetic effort between the optimal C content and the formed Ti–O–C bonds in C–TiO2were determined to increase the light absorption and greatly promote the separation and transfer of charge in the photocatalytic reaction, which is verified from UV–vis, PL, photocurrent, and EIS characterizations. Remarkably, the activity of the C–TiO2is 5.5-fold higher than that of TiO2in H2evolution. A feasible strategy for rational design and construction of surface-engineered hollow photocatalysts to improve the photocatalytic performance was provided in this study. Keywords:surface modification;hollow structure;charge separation;photocatalysis;H2evolution
