Impact of normal and inverse spinel structure evolution induced by co-substitution of chemical units on the luminescence properties of Ni2+-Activated Gallium Titanate Phosphor NIR-II

Tong Feng,Lijia Liang,Hui Zhou,Yuanlin Jin,Zhangwen Long,Dacheng Zhou,Xiaqing Jiang,Bitao Liu,Jianbei Qiu

The rapid advancement of near-infrared light source technology has positioned phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (PC-LEDs) operating within the near-infrared spectrum at the forefront of interdisciplinary research, with extensive applications in biomedicine, food quality assessment, and agricultural monitoring. However, the development of light sources that cover the second near-infrared spectral window (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) continues to encounter significant technical challenges. Inspired by chemical unit co-substitution strategy, we successfully developed a broadband NIR-II phosphor designated as (Li 0.7 Mg 0.3 )(Ga 0.7 Mg 0.3 )TiO 4 :0.003Ni 2+ ((L 0.7 M 0.3 )(G 0.7 M 0.3 )T:0.003Ni 2+ ) through [Mg 2+ -Mg 2+ ] dual-site substitution in orthorhombic LiGaTiO 4 (LGT) normal spinel. This co-substitution strategy resulted in an impressive enhancement of the internal quantum efficiency by 29.77 %–64.8 %, while maintaining thermal stability without significant attenuation at elevated temperature. To validate its practical utility, we fabricated prototype for a NIR phosphor-converted LED by integrating (L 0.7 M 0.3 )(G 0.7 M 0.3 )T:0.003Ni 2+ a commercial 340 nm chip. The resulting device demonstrates promising potential for applications in food safety inspection and deep-tissue infrared imaging. This work provides a perspective for designing broadband high-efficiency NIR-II phosphors via modulation of crystal field environment.

Multifunctional and eco-friendly cotton process for enhanced UV-Vis-NIR woodland green camouflage through biomimetic composite natural dye of sodium copper chlorophyllin and red onion skin extracts

Zhou Yang,Zhang Sheng,Yu Kun,Yang Ming,Wang Shu,Li Qing

With development of hyperspectral imaging technology, to detect and capture detailed spectral information of a hidden object become possible. So far cotton camouflage is mostly achieved through coating or dyeing with synthetic dyes. While natural dye has gained massive popularity in recent years, its application in camouflage dyeing seems to have received little attention. This paper reports cotton cellulose as natural substrate and its dyeing with biomimetic composite natural dye of sodium copper chlorophyllin (SCC) and red onion skin extracts, to mimic reflectance curve of natural green leaves in the ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) regions. Cotton was cationically modified to enhance natural dye affinity and to improve color fastness of dyed fabrics. Results showed that at SCC concentration of 20% owf and red onion skin extracts of 80% wt, spectral correlation coefficient of dyed cotton and natural green leaves reached 0.96 in 300–1300 nm range, and colorimetric values of dyed cotton closely matched that of the standard dark green with a color difference of 3.2. The dyed cotton exhibits superior colorfastness, excellent ultraviolet protection and antioxidant capacities. The process employed in this work is simple, effective and environmentally friendly. Outcomes of this study have opened up new possibilities for the development of natural green camouflage materials with multifunctions.

Copper peroxide nanodot-decorated gold nanostar/silica nanorod Janus nanostructure with NIR-II photothermal and acid-triggered hydroxyl radical generation properties for the effective treatment of wound infections

Yan Lu,Rui Xu,Wei Liu,Xiling Song,Wanqin Cai,Yuan Fang,Wei Xue,Siming Yu

Recently, bacterial infections have become a global crisis, greatly threatening the health of human beings. The development of a non-antibiotic biomaterial is recognized as an alternative way for the effective treatment of bacterial infections. In the present work, a multifunctional copper peroxide (CP) nanodot-decorated gold nanostar (GNS)/silica nanorod (SiNR) Janus nanostructure (GNS@CP/SiNR) with excellent antibacterial activity was reported. Due to the formation of the Janus nanostructure, GNS@CP/SiNR displayed strong plasmonic resonance absorbance in the near infrared (NIR)-II region that enabled the nanosystem to achieve mild photothermal therapy (MPTT). In acidic conditions, CP decorated on GNS@CP/SiNR dissociated rapidly by releasing Cu2+ and H2O2, which subsequently transformed to ˙OH via the Fenton-like reaction for chemodynamic therapy (CDT). As a result, GNS@CP/SiNR could effectively inhibit both Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and eradicate the associated bacterial biofilms by exerting the synergistic MPTT/CDT antibacterial effect. Moreover, GNS@CP/SiNR was also demonstrated to be effective in treating wound infections, as verified on the S. aureus-infected full thickness excision wound rat model. Our mechanism study revealed that the synergistic MPTT/CDT effect of GNS@CP/SiNR firstly caused bacterial membrane damage, followed by boosting intracellular ROS via the severe oxidative stress effect, which subsequently caused the depletion of intracellular GSH and DNA damage, finally leading to the death of bacteria.

Facile synthesis of Au NCs@POMA-Fe-FA nanoregulators with precise-targeted/NIR-laser-triggered/tumor microenvironment-responsive abilities for enhanced photothermal /photodynamic/chemodynamic therapy with photothermal imaging guidence

Z. Yang,P. Wang,X. Liu,X. Liu,Y. Shen,A. Xie,M. Zhu

For overcoming the insurmountable obstacles of the multimodal combined therapy (MCT) in anti-cancer, tumor microenvironment regulation is considered an effective method. Hence, a TME adjustable, precise-targeted and near-infrared (NIR)-laser-responsive Au nanoclusters (NCs)@poly-o-mercaptoaniline (POMA)-Fe nanoregulators (NRGs) grafting with folic acid (FA) was designed and successfully fabricated by a simple redox with coordination method. The obtained Au NCs@POMA-Fe-FA NRGs could achieve the excellent TME regulation ability via the following avenues: the Fe 3+ ions are released by the acidic TME from the POMA-Fe-FA shell to transform the hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) into O 2 for overcoming the hypoxia of TME. Further, the massive Fe 3+ ions are reduced by the excessive glutathione (GSH) in TME into Fe 2+ ions, which further react with H 2 O 2 to produce the hydroxyl radical (·OH) by Fenton reaction, realizing the chemodynamic therapy (CDT) to tumor. Moreover, the Au NC cores and the POMA-Fe-FA shell endow the nanoregulators with outstanding photodynamic and photothermal abilities triggered by NIR laser respectively. In addition, the consumption of GSH enhances the photodynamic therapy (PDT) and CDT synergistically. More importantly, the FA-induced targeting and NIR guided photothermal imaging grant the obtained nanoregulators outstanding selectivity for the precise tumor treatment and minimized side effect. The in vivo experimental results displayed that the tumor inhibition of the prepared Au NCs@POMA-Fe-FA NRGs could reach as high as about 84%. Obviously, the synthesized Au NCs@POMA-Fe-FA NRGs pave a new path for the design and preparation of novel multi-mode therapy for cancer with regulatory effects to TME.

Silk fibroin/poly(L-lactic acid) Janus nanofibre membranes enhanced with Al–Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene for dual-modal conductive and NIR-photothermal synergistic therapy of infected diabetic wounds

Chengzhi Liang,Fanrong Ai,Pinkai Wang,Jiawei kang,Hui Deng,Zaiwei Fan,Zhihao Lin,Guoming Liu,Yudan Zhu,Jun Tao

Background Diabetic wounds present substantial therapeutic challenges, primarily due to their heightened susceptibility to infection and impaired healing. Effective management requires both local pathogen control and enhanced tissue regeneration. To address these dual clinical needs, we developed an electroactive and photothermal silk fibroin/polylactic acid/Al–Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene Janus nanofibre membrane using electrospinning and spraying techniques. Results By integrating electrospinning and electrospraying, we fabricated a Janus nanofibre dressing with distinct structural, hydrophilic, and electroactive properties on each side. Upon near-infrared light irradiation, the dressing demonstrated rapid and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. At an intensity of 0.5 W/cm 2 , the resulting photothermal effect achieved rapid sterilisation within 5 min. When combined with external electrical stimulation, the dressing also facilitated fibroblast proliferation and migration. Moreover, this dual therapy upregulated EGF, VEGF, and TGF-β expressions, thereby significantly accelerating the healing of chronic diabetic wounds. These results underscore the strong therapeutic potential of this approach for effectively managing complex diabetic wounds. Conclusion This novel biomimetic Janus membrane effectively combines photothermal antibacterial action and electrical stimulation to support wound healing. The multifunctional electrospun dressing offers a promising framework for designing advanced wound care materials specifically for infected diabetic wounds.

Simple Full-Spectrum Heterogeneous Photocatalyst for Photo-induced Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) under UV/vis/NIR and its Application for the Preparation of Dual Mode Curing Injectable Photoluminescence Hydrogel

Xiaoguang Qiao,Qianqian Hao,Meng Chen,Ge Shi,Yanjie He,Xinchang Pang

The utilizing light with broadband range has attracted lots of research interest for the photo induced reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP). However, it is still a challenge for a single catalyst to simultaneously respond to various lights with highly varied wavelengths. Here, we proposed a simple strategy for the preparation of a heterogeneous photocatalyst suitable for photo induced atom transfer radical polymerization (photoATRP) under full spectrum (from UV/vis light to NIR), by combining pyridine nitrogen doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). In the presence of these robust UCNP@SiO2@N-CDs composite particles, the photoATRP could be carried on under the different irradiations of UV, blue, green, red, white, and 980 nm NIR light, with a low loading of part per million concentrations of the CuBr2/L catalyst. Moreover, the excellent solvent and aqueous compatibility allow UCNP@SiO2@N-CDs to be capable for photoATRP in both organic solvents and aqueous media, providing well-defined hydrophobic and hydrophilic polymers with low dispersity and excellent chain-end fidelity. In addition, the photoATRP with 980 nm NIR exhibited excellent penetrations through visible-light-proof barriers. The system could be used for the preparation of an injectable hydrogel that had dual curing and photoluminescence modes. Owing to the “living” characteristics of polymer chains achieved through ATRP, the hydrogel was capable to be easily repaired by using monomer as the binder.

A mart-responsive photoacoustic sensor based on metal-organic framework as bioreactor for in situ visualization of hydrogen sulfide and tracking of drug-induced liver injury by NIR-II imaging

Shulong Wang,Yanni Luo,Jianniao Tian,Fanggui Ye,Zhihui Luo,Shulin Zhao

Metformin is currently the most commonly used oral drug for the treatment of diabetes. However, excessive use can up-regulate hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) levels in the liver, which subsequently leads to severe liver injury and hepatotoxicity. Therefore, using endogenous H 2 S as a target molecule of an intelligent triggering sensor, a nano-probe that can recognize H 2 S with high specificity, and achieve non-invasive and highly specific in situ second near-infrared (NIR-II) photoacoustic (PA) imaging of hepatotoxicity induced by metformin would be welcomed in the field. In this work, we designed and synthesized a smart-responsive PA sensor based on metal-organic framework as bioreactor to dynamically monitor the changes in H 2 S levels induced by metformin. Molecular sieve imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) was selected as the coating layer, and the unique pore size of ZIF-8 was used to improve the selectivity of the sensor to H 2 S. The designed CuO x NPs@MOFs sensor turned on the PA signal of the sensor in NIR-II by in situ sulfation with overexpressed endogenous H 2 S in injured liver tissues. More importantly, the changes in the PA signal could non-invasively monitor liver injury in real time and with high sensitivity. Utilizing the unique structure in the MOFs sensor to selective recognize H 2 S molecules, ultra-sensitive monitoring and PA imaging of H 2 S in vitro and in vivo were achieved.

Wanqing Qian,Yan Shu,Cai Pan,Xueqing Yu,Weitao Su,Mikhail P. Kuz'min,Kaixin Song

Near-infrared phosphor conversion light emitting diode (NIR pc-LED) has important application value in plant growth, night vision imaging and biological detection. Its performance depends on the optimized design of fluorescent materials. Based on gadolinium gallium garnet (Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 ), the near-infrared phosphors of Gd 2.5 (CaSn) 0.5 (InAl) 0.5 Ga 3.5-x O 12 : xCr 3+ (x = 0.01–0.09) were prepared by Ca 2+ -Sn 4+ /In 3+ -Al 3+ double ion pair synergistic substitution strategy. Under excitation of 450 nm blue light, the material exhibits broadband near-infrared emission covering the range of 650–1150 nm, with a quantum yield of 96.29 %. The material exhibits excellent thermal stability of luminescence and can maintain 82.4 % of the initial emission intensity at room temperature at 423K. The NIR pc-LED device based on this phosphor package achieved 67.37 mW output power and 16.68 % photoelectric conversion efficiency at 100 mA driving current. Application verification shows that the NIR pc-LED light source shows excellent performance in plant supplementary light, night vision security, information encryption and nondestructive testing applications. It fully proves that the broadband near-infrared emission of this series of phosphors can take into account multi-functional application scenarios and has broad development prospects.

Dual-mode excitation β-NaGdF4:Yb/Er@β-NaGdF4:Yb/Nd core–shell nanoparticles with NIR-II emission and 5 nm cores: controlled synthesis via NaF/RE regulation and the growth mechanism

Chunyan Cheng,Yueshan Xu,Gejihu De,Jianxun Wang,Wei Wu,Yuexing Tian,Shasha Wang

Rare-earth doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have attracted wide-ranging interest due to their potential applications in bioimaging and biolabeling, where a high emission intensity and small particle size are needed. However, common synthesis processes can be somewhat complex or require additional reactants, and the use of small-size NPs is limited by their weak luminescence intensity. In this work, uniform, monodisperse ∼5 nm β-NaGdF4:20% Yb/2% Er NPs were synthesized via a simple one-pot synthesis method in the high boiling-point solvents 1-octadecene (ODE) and oleic acid (OA) using a single dose of NaF at an ultralow NaF concentration of NaF/RE = 4. The effects of NaF/RE, the reaction temperature, and the reaction time on the size and phase of the particles were investigated. High-quality β-NaGdF4:20% Yb/2% Er@β-NaGdF4:20% Yb/10% Nd core–shell NPs with a size of ∼13 nm, enhanced UC luminescence, long UC lifetimes (τ) for green (τ ≈ 150 μs) and red (τ ≈ 105 μs) emission under 980 and 808 nm excitation, revealed via lifetime imaging, and obvious emission in the near-infrared (NIR) II region were synthesized. The synthesized core–shell NPs may result in a decrease in the overheating effect and allow for a deep penetration depth when further used for bioimaging applications. This work could inspire the synthesis of other high-quality RE-doped UCNPs via adding a single dose of a small amount of NaF and could lay the foundation for the use of Gd-based UCNPs in biomedical applications.

An integrated strategy for rapid discovery and prediction of nucleobases, nucleosides and amino acids as quality markers in different flowering stages of Flos Chrysanthemi using UPLC–MS/MS and FT-NIR coupled with multivariate statistical analysis

Xiangwei Chang,Dandan Wei,Shulan Su,Sheng Guo,Sien Qian,Hui Yan,Ming Zhao,Erxin Shang,Dawei Qian,Xiaodong Sun,Jin-ao Duan

Nucleobases, nucleosides, nucleotides and amino acids are important nutritional compounds, and some of them are positively correlated with the umami taste in scented tea. Taking these nutrients of Flos Chrysanthemi from three different flowering stages as the research object, an integrated strategy of ultra high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple-quadrupole linear ion-trap tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS/MS), Fourier transform near infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIR) and multivariate statistical analysis was proposed to set up a systematic quality evaluation system for Flos Chrysanthemi from discovery to the rapid prediction of quality markers. First, a rapid, sensitive and accurate UPLC–MS/MS method was established to simultaneously determine 40 nucleobases, nucleosides, nucleotides and amino acids in three different flowering stages of Flos Chrysanthemi. The results indicated that Flos Chrysanthemi from three different flowering stages are rich in 40 nutritional compounds detected above and could be developed as functional products possessed nutraceutical and bioactive properties. Next, ten potential quality markers for three flowering stages of Flos Chrysanthemi were screened using partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and the plot of variable importance for projection (VIP), and the related metabolic pathways were identified for the first time. Furthermore, three of the ten potential quality markers, namely, glutamate, asparagine and aspartate were selected as key quality markers. Finally, three best PLS regression models constructed with FT-NIR were developed to predict the contents of the three key quality markers using the optimal spectral preprocessing methods and spectral interval combinations screened by synergy interval-PLS (Si-PLS), which yielded excellent prediction performance: 0.9766 ≤ R 2 p (coefficient of determination for prediction) ≤ 0.9858 and 6.3059 ≤ RPD (ratio of prediction to deviation) ≤ 7.3613. To sum up, the integrated quality marker discovery and FT-NIR quantitation strategy was suitable for fast quality evaluation of Flos Chrysanthemi.

Stretchable, Self-Healing, and Bioactive Hydrogel with High-Functionality N,N′-bis(acryloyl)cystamine Dynamically Bonded Ag@polydopamine Crosslinkers for Wearable Sensors

Wei Shi,Hui Li,Jing Chen,Yern Chee Ching,Cheng Hock Chuah,Chengsheng Xu,Moran Liu,Jinyong Zhang,Kuan Yong Ching,Yongsheng Liang,Guanglin Li,Wei Tang

Hydrogels present attractive opportunities as flexible sensors due to their soft nature and tunable physicochemical properties. Despite significant advances, practical application of hydrogel-based sensor is limited by the lack of general routes to fabricate materials with combination of mechanical, conductive, and biological properties. Here, a multi-functional hydrogel sensor is reported by in situ polymerizing of acrylamide (AM) with N,N′-bis(acryloyl)cystamine (BA) dynamic crosslinked silver-modified polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles, namely PAM/BA-Ag@PDA. Compared with traditional polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel, the BA-Ag@PDA nanoparticles provide both high-functionality crosslinks and multiple interactions within PAM networks, thereby endowing the optimized PAM/BA-Ag@PDA hydrogel with significantly enhanced tensile/compressive strength (349.80 kPa at 383.57% tensile strain, 263.08 kPa at 90% compressive strain), lower hysteresis (5.2%), improved conductivity (2.51 S m −1 ) and excellent near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered self-healing ability. As a strain sensor, the PAM/BA-Ag@PDA hydrogel shows a good sensitivity (gauge factor of 1.86), rapid response time (138 ms), and high stability. Owing to abundant reactive groups in PDA, the PAM/BA-Ag@PDA hydrogel exhibits inherent tissue adhesiveness and antioxidant, along with a synergistic antibacterial effect by PDA and Ag. Toward practical applications, the PAM/BA-Ag@PDA hydrogel can conformally adhere to skin and monitor subtle activities and large-scale movements with excellent reliability, demonstrating its promising applications as wearable sensors for healthcare.
