Comprehensively understanding the role of interfacial engineering in tailoring dielectric response is essential for the development of next-generation electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers. Rare-earth oxides, with their flexible valence states and localized 4f orbitals, hold great potential to mediate interfacial charge transfer and polarization, yet the electromagnetic loss mechanisms underlying such effects remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate a rare-earth oxide–regulated interfacial engineering strategy, where the incorporation of CeO 2 into NiCo 2 O 4 constructs abundant heterointerfaces with dynamic valence states. Such CeO 2 -induced interfacial polarization markedly strengthens dielectric response and facilitates impedance matching, thereby surpassing the limitations of single-phase components. Dielectric analysis reveals that polarization loss dominates (>88 %) within the absorption band, while conduction loss plays a secondary role. The results show that interfacial charge redistribution driven by Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox flexibility, which creates abundant interfacial polarization centers and enhances relaxation. As a result, the optimized NiCo 2 O 4 /CeO 2 –T3 delivers outstanding EMW absorption, achieving a broad effective absorption bandwidth of 6.37 GHz at 2.00 mm and reflection loss of −60.09 dB at 2.20 mm (>99.99 % attenuation). This study establishes rare-earth oxide–enabled interfacial engineering as a powerful paradigm for amplifying interfacial polarization and guides the rational design of high-performance, lightweight EMW absorbers.

The heterogeneous catalysts based on ternary Pd/CeO 2 -nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) were prepared and utilized for solvent-free aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde in the presence of green oxidant O 2 . Characterization results revealed that CeO 2 dramatically enhanced the dispersion of Pd nanoparticles, reduced their particle size and inhibited the Pd oxidation formation. With high lattice oxygen storage capability of CeO 2 , excellent electrical conductivity of NG and high catalytic activity of Pd, the ternary catalyst was designed by combining the complementary superiorities of these three components. The ternary composite Pd/5CeO 2 -NG exhibited significantly higher catalytic activity with turnover frequency (TOF) of 30.74 s −1 for solvent-free aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol compared with the corresponding binary composites including 5CeO 2 -NG, Pd/NG and Pd/CeO 2 , verifying the synergistic effect among Pd, CeO 2 and NG. The ternary composite was stable and could be recycled up to 6 times without remarkable loss in the activity and selectivity towards benzaldehyde. Owing to its excellent activity, high selectivity, and exceptional stability and recyclability, the Pd/CeO 2 -NG composite has great application potential in the fields of organic synthesis, electrochemical biosensors and fuel cells.

Towards the breaking of the “trade-off” between proton conductivity and stabilities of sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) (SPAES)-based proton exchange membranes, a strategy of compositing with the superacids of sulfated SnO 2 (ST) and SnO 2 -xCeO 2 (CSTx) is designed and carried out. The superacids of ST and CSTx have been synthesized by sulfonation of SnO 2 with sulfuric acid and subsequently doped with CeO 2 . By the solution casting approach, the composite membranes are obtained in a homogenous state and show excellent mechanical strength , thermal, dimensional and chemical stability. ST or CSTx in the composite membranes provides excess active sites and forms additional proton-conducting channels by a network of hydrogen bonds . Although with low IEC levels, all the composite membranes show larger water absorption and proton conductivity than the control SPAES membrane. As a result, the SPAES-2CST3 membrane achieves a power output of 673.6 mW/cm 2 at 80 °C, which is higher than the control membrane (481.8 mW/cm 2 ). The durability of the SPAES-2CST3 membrane under accelerated stress test conditions is significantly enhanced compared to the control SPAES membrane, and the aged SPAES-2CST3 membrane exhibits lower hydrogen crossover and better cell performance than the aged control SPAES membrane.

Nano molybdenum disulfide (Nano-MoS 2 ) can be as a photocatalyst for antibiotic removal under visible light. However, the low energy of visible light and limited radicals restrict the applications of nano-MoS 2 . In this study, ceria dioxide (CeO 2 ) rich in adsorbed oxygen was introduced into MoS 2 @Z (MoS 2 @Zeolite) to synthesize full-spectrum CeO 2 /MoS 2 @Z photocatalysts (CeO 2 /MoS 2 @Zs). The CeO 2 /MoS 2 @Z-3 (Ce: 1.5 mmol; Mo: 3.5 mmol) shows the best photocatalytic ability (98.32%) for tetracycline within 150 min, which is 18.20% improvement over MoS 2 @Z. The UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra of photocatalysts shows that the ultraviolet absorption ability of CeO 2 /MoS 2 @Z-3 improved when CeO 2 was introduced. The active species trapping experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test prove h + and superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) are the main active species, and CeO 2 rich in adsorbed oxygen improves the amounts of •O 2 − in photocatalytic process. Moreover, singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), producing by oxygen vacancies of CeO 2 , also plays an important role. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to full-spectrum (200 nm–800 nm) absorption performance , improved content of •O 2 − , and electron-hole (e − /h + ) pairs separation. After five times recycle, the photodegradation efficiency of CeO 2 /MoS 2 @Z-3 only decreased by 2.59%. Meantime, the proposed three photocatalytic pathways show that tetracycline eventually degraded into small organics (like C 5 H 8 O 3 ), H 2 O and CO 2 by dehydration, demethylation, deamination, dihydroxylation, deamidation, ring-opening reaction and carbonylation . The results show that CeO 2 /MoS 2 @Z-3 may become a high efficiency, stable, and promising photocatalyst for tetracycline wastewater treatment .

Tetracycline (TC) contamination in aquatic environments poses significant risks owing to antibiotic resistance gene dissemination and ecotoxicity. Integrating adsorption with photocatalysis offers a promising strategy for pre-concentrating contaminants at photocatalytic adsorbent surfaces while enabling solar-driven mineralization. Herein, a novel hierarchical mesoporous CeO2/TiO2 composite was constructed by transforming a Ti-based metal–organic framework, MIL-125-NH2 (NM), which serves as a highly efficient photocatalytic adsorbent for the treatment of high-concentration TC solutions. Remarkably, it delivered a high equilibrium adsorption capacity of 146.4 mg g−1 for TC within 240 min, significantly outperforming pristine NM by approximately 9.3 times. Moreover, its removal efficiency can further attain 93.1% for the high-concentration TC solutions (50 mg L−1) under simulated solar irradiation, and it remains above 80% after three successive cycles. The hierarchical porous structure enables a rapid TC preconcentration, while Ce–O–Ti heterointerfaces facilitate efficient charge separation and interfacial reactions. This work validates a facile MOF-templating approach for designing bifunctional composites that couple efficient adsorption with solar photocatalysis, offering significant potential for treating recalcitrant antibiotic pollutants in wastewater systems.

Corrosion in harsh environments causes global economic losses exceeding 3 trillion US dollars annually. Traditional silicone epoxy (SE) coatings are prone to failure due to insufficient physical barrier properties and lack of active protection. In this study, cerium dioxide (CeO2) was in situ grown on the surface of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) mediated by polydopamine (PDA) to prepare BN-PDA-CeO2ternary nanocomposites, which were then incorporated into SE coatings to construct a multi-scale synergistic corrosion protection system. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the successful preparation of the composites, where PDA inhibited the agglomeration of h-BN and CeO2was uniformly loaded. Electrochemical tests showed that the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the extract of this composite for 2024 aluminum alloy reached 99.96%. After immersing the composite coating in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 120 days, the coating resistance (Rc) and charge transfer resistance (Rct) reached 8.5 × 109Ω·cm2and 1.2 × 1010Ω·cm2, respectively, which were much higher than those of pure SE coatings and coatings filled with single/binary fillers. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the synergistic mechanisms: PDA enhanced interfacial dispersion (adsorption energy of −0.58 eV), CeO2captured Cl−(adsorption energy of −4.22 eV), and Ce3+formed a passive film. This study provides key technical and theoretical support for the design of long-term corrosion protection coatings in harsh environments such as marine and petrochemical industries.

A combined bottom-up and top-down route was developed for the template-free synthesis of mesoporous CeO2 powders using Ce(NO3)3·6H2O, NH4HCO3, H2O2, and H2O as starting reagents. The flake-like Ce2(CO3)3·8H2O precursor was etched by H2O2, and CeO2 nucleated in situ with built-in equiaxed particles. Pores formed on the flakes owing to the loss of by-products of H2O and CO2. The formation of the mesostructured CeO2 could also be explained by the large change in volume induced as a result of the difference in density between Ce2(CO3)3·8H2O and CeO2. Accordingly, the original flake-like morphology of Ce2(CO3)3·8H2O was not preserved upon pore formation and during continuous stirring in the synthesis. A subsequent hydrothermal treatment destroyed the loose aggregates of CeO2 derived from the reaction between H2O2 and Ce2(CO3)3·8H2O. Rearrangement of the CeO2 particles via a dissolution–recrystallization process occurred under certain temperatures and pressures. Consequently, CeO2 particles with coarser sizes, smoother surfaces, and mesoporous structures were obtained. The specific surface area of the particles was 166.5 m2 g−1 after hydrothermal treatment at 200 °C for 24 h. The mesoporous CeO2 particles possessed better adsorption capacities of acid orange 7 dye than basic orange 2 dye in the absence of pH pre-adjustments. The saturated adsorption amount of acid orange 7 dye was 510.2 mg g−1 at 298 K based on Langmuir linear fitting of the experimental data.

To obtain highly active electrocatalyst for the whole electrochemical water splitting is of importance to generate hydrogen. Co(OH) 2 is used as electrocatalyst towards OER, however, the performance can be improved further. Usually, to construct the interface and adjust the electronic environment of electrocatalysts are regarded as powerful ways to improve the activity. Herein, CeO 2 -Co(OH) 2 sheets supported on copper foam (CF) are fabricated by electrodeposition method. The morphology and the electron structure of metals are adjusted by changing the molar ratio of Co to Ce, thus, resulting in different electrocatalytic activity. The optimal hybrids of CeO 2 -Co(OH) 2 exhibits lower overpotentials of 188, 269 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 towards HER and OER, respectively, and good stability. Notably, it is found that the electroactivity is extremely superior to that of bare CF as well as the counterparts in the literature. Also, we try to employ M(OH) 2 (M = Fe, Ni) to substitute Co(OH) 2 to investigate the effect of species of hydroxides on the electron interaction between CeO 2 and hydroxides, the XPS results indicate that Ce and Co shows stronger electron interaction compared to other two control hydroxides. As electrocatalysts for alkaline full water splitting, CeO 2 -Co(OH) 2 requires a cell voltage of 1.62 V to drive 10 mA cm −2 . Experimental results prove the advantages of the electron engineering and morphology control.

Controlling the oxidative redispersion behavior of supported metal nanoparticles is of central importance in producing high-performance catalysts applied under industry-related oxidation conditions. So far, considerable efforts have been paid to understanding reactant (including O2)-induced disintegration, while much less is known about the influences of support defects like hydroxyl (OH) and oxygen vacancy (VO) on the stabilization of metal–reactant complexes. In this article, by using H2 as a reducing agent, the roles of OH groups and VO in oxidative redispersion of Ru over CeO2 nanorods were distinguished and further disentangled by comparison with the cases of CO-pretreated Ru/CeO2. Supported by electron microscopy, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman, and other characterizations, we showed that the doubly bridging OH (II) groups on CeO2(111) steps (type II or III) played major roles in stabilizing Ru–Ox complexes and producing atomically dispersed Ru species, while the surface VO sites assisted dehydrogenation and prevented OH overcapping on the reactive Ru sites. The propylene combustion activity of the thus-obtained single-site Ru/CeO2 was far superior to that of a benchmark Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. The results suggested that well-designed H2 treatments could be used to maximize the effectiveness of (reactant-induced) metal redispersion over CeO2, and attention should be paid on possible metal redispersion when dealing with catalysis over systems accessible to reactants (e.g., hydrogen, water, and/or hydrocarbons) that give rise to CeO2 surface hydroxyls in working conditions.

Soil, air, and water pollution caused by lignite is considered a serious environmental problem. Activation methods thus have been developed to extract humic acid from lignite to support the agricultural production as the soil amendment or fertilizer synergist. The traditional activation methods of humic acid from lignite, however, are not environmentally friendly. As the first study, this work developed a novel solid-phase activation method with a Pd/CeO2 nanocatalyst for lignite-derived humic acid. This study analyzed the morphology and structures of the as-synthesized Pd/CeO2 nanocatalyst with various characterization tools. The mechanisms of the Pd/CeO2 nanocatalyst for lignite activation were determined. The Pd/CeO2 catalyst effectively promoted the production of water-soluble humic acids from lignite via KOH solid-phase activation at room temperature. It increased the amount of small molecular active groups and the corresponding small molecules of humic acid. The existence of a strong synergistic effect at the interface sites between Pd/CeO2 nanoparticles and lignite was one of the key factors for the outstanding catalytic performance. In conclusion, this study has great application perspectives for reducing lignite pollution and increasing humic acid utilization by crops, which can improve the sustainability of the environment and agricultural systems.

Secondary injury after spinal cord injury (SCI) is characterized by persistent oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, which create a hostile microenvironment that limits neuronal regeneration. Herein, an interfacially engineered core-shell nanozyme system (CeO 2 @mSiO 2 -RES) was developed for integrated regulation of the oxidative-inflammatory microenvironment. The CeO 2 core exhibited mixed Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ states and CAT- and SOD-like activities, while the mesoporous SiO 2 shell enabled efficient RES loading and pH-dependent release. In vitro, CeO 2 @mSiO 2 -RES reduced intracellular ROS accumulation and restored CAT, SOD, and GSH antioxidant defenses. It also decreased iNOS expression while increasing Arg-1 expression in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Furthermore, CeO 2 @mSiO 2 -RES enhanced NGF-induced neurite outgrowth and MAP2 expression under inflammatory stress. Collectively, these findings suggest that CeO 2 @mSiO 2 -RES can regulate the oxidative-inflammatory microenvironment and provide a potential nanomaterial-based strategy for neuronal repair after SCI. Photo-thermo-chemical dry reforming of methane (PTC-DRM) presents advantages over thermocatalytic DRM by storing solar and thermal energy as chemical energy, yet maintaining high efficiency and stability remains a challenge. Herein, we report an efficient PTC-DRM process on Ni–Co–Ce–Al catalysts and investigate the synergistic effect of Ni and Co on reaction performance. Characterization results revealed that the introduction of Co increases the concentration of acidic sites on the Ni-based catalyst surface. An appropriate number of acidic sites facilitates the DRM reaction. Co-incorporated catalysts demonstrate excellent light responsiveness, and generate more energetic hot charge carriers under light irradiation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the interfacial electronic structure of the Ni–Co–Ce–Al catalyst facilitates spontaneous electron transfer from CeO2 to NiCo bimetallic quantum dots (QDs), which is mediated by the built-in electric field at the metal–semiconductor interface—attributed to the inherent work function difference between CeO2 (5.45 eV) and NiCo alloys (4.93 eV). The incorporation of an optimal amount of Co significantly improves the catalytic performance, with the Ni0.9–Co0.1–Ce–Al catalyst exhibiting the highest thermal and photocatalytic activity. At 650 °C, the conversions of CH4 and CO2 increased from 55.8% and 60.1% under dark conditions to 65.1% and 67.9% under light irradiation, respectively. Accordingly, the yields of H2 and CO increased from 21.4 and 26.5 μmol min−1 g−1 to 23.6 and 27.7 μmol min−1 g−1. This study demonstrates that the synergy between bimetallic components coupled with photothermal integration can effectively enhance DRM efficiency and coke resistance, providing a valuable catalyst design strategy for solar-driven conversion of carbon resources.
