NOM mitigates the phytotoxicity of AgNPs by regulating rice physiology, root cell wall components and root morphology

Xitong Huang,Yong Li,Ke Chen,Haiyan Chen,Fei Wang,Xiaomin Han,Beihai Zhou,Huilun Chen,Rongfang Yuan

Natural organic matter (NOM) affects the environmental behaviors of AgNPs, which may change their phytotoxicity to plants. However, more evidence can be provided to illustrate how NOM influences AgNPs-induced phytotoxicity. In this study, using rice ( Oryza sativa ) as a model, the effects of NOM, Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) and fulvic acid (FA), on the dissolution and phytotoxicity of AgNPs were investigated. Silver ions decreased in both AgNPs and AgNO 3 solution in the presence of NOM, and the effect of SRHA was stronger than FA. Image-XRF (iXRF) results showed that Ag mainly remained in the root rather than the shoot of rice seedling exposed to AgNPs. NOM mitigated the negative effects of AgNPs and AgNO 3 on rice with lower germination inhibition rate, less chlorophyll reduction, more relative biomass and less O 2 •− content. Moreover, NOM improved root cell viability according to FDA fluorescent dye as well as maintained the normal root morphology. Interestingly, the neutral sugars content from pectin, hemicellulose 1, hemicellulose 2 and cellulose of root cell wall in AgNPs and AgNO 3 treatments differed from the control, while it was close to the regular content in AgNPs/AgNO 3 +SRHA/FA groups, which implied that NOM regulated the changes. Besides, SRHA led to less germination and less relative biomass than FA due to different chemical characters. Thus, NOM needs to be considered when studying the phytotoxicity of AgNPs.

Ti3C2Tx-AgNPs@beta-cyclodextrin SERS substrate for rapid and selective determination of erythrosin B in dyed food

Huasheng Lai,Gongke Li,Zhuomin Zhang

In this work, a native beta-cyclodextrin capped silver nanoparticles decorated Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets (Ti 3 C 2 T x -AgNPs@β-CD) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate was developed by a facile one-pot method. The two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets not only acted as the supporter to load AgNPs, but also served as chemical enhancement material. Meanwhile, β-CD played a critical role in the control of morphology and size of AgNPs, and its supramolecular structure also endowed the Ti 3 C 2 T x -AgNPs@β-CD substrate with selectivity. The Ti 3 C 2 T x -AgNPs@β-CD substrate exhibited excellent sensitivity, good intra-batch and inter-batch reproducibility, and long-term stability by detecting methylene blue model molecule. Then, the substrate was applied for selective determination of erythrosin B among pigment additives via the host-guest size-matching effect. The proposed SERS method with linear range of 1−100 mg/L and detection limit of 30 μg/L could realize rapid SERS analysis of erythrosin B in dyed food samples within 15 min with recoveries of 78.1 %–113.2 %. Erythrosin B was actually found in dyed cherry with 49 mg/kg and marshmallow with 16 mg/kg, and the result matched well with that of UV–vis method. Such a robust substrate possessed great values for efficient and rapid on-site SERS analysis in food safety issues.

Bioinspired design of AgNPs embedded silk sericin-based sponges for efficiently combating bacteria and promoting wound healing

Gang Tao,Rui Cai,Yejing Wang,Liying Liu,Hua Zuo,Ping Zhao,Ahmad Umar,Chuanbin Mao,Qingyou Xia,Huawei He

A wound dressing with excellent hydrophilicity, high porosity, good mechanical property, and antimicrobial activities holds great potential for wound healing. Sericin, a natural protein from silkworm cocoon, is particularly attractive for the development of skin-repairing materials because it is biocompatible and biodegradable. Here, we reported a green strategy for in situ biomimetic synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) within sericin/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel. AgNPs were in situ synthesized by the redox property of tyrosine residues in sericin without additional chemicals, similar to a biomineralization process. AgNPs-sericin/poly(vinyl alcohol) dressing was demonstrated to bear desired high porosity, good wettability, hygroscopicity, and mechanical properties. The evaluation of cytocompatibility and immunotoxicity of the composite with NIH/3T3, HEK-293, and RAW264.7 cells further demonstrated its excellent biocompatibility. The composite also showed an effective antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and could inhibit biofilm formation caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Finally, the animal experiment suggested that the composite dressing could facilitate re-epithelialization and collagen deposition to promote wound healing. Our work shows that the composite dressing has great potential as a competitive alternative for traditional wound dressings.

Constructing an electrochemical sensor with screen-printed electrodes incorporating Ti3C2Tx-PDA-AgNPs for lactate detection in sweat

Haozi Lu,Junhua Wang,Ziyi Wu,Meiqing Yang,Wei Zhou,Ye Li,Huimin Li,Yang Zhang,Jifei Yang,Gang Yu,Song Liu

Sweat lactate levels are closely related to an individual's physiological state and serve as critical indicators for assessing exercise intensity, muscle fatigue, and certain pathological conditions. Screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) offer a promising avenue for the development of low-cost, high-performance wearable devices for electrochemical sweat analysis. The material composition of SPEs significantly impacts their detection sensitivity and stability. In this study, we designed a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with Ti 3 C 2 T x Polydopamine (PDA), and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (Ti 3 C 2 T x -PDA-AgNPs) for lactate detection in sweat. The accordion-like structure of Ti 3 C 2 T x provides a large specific surface area and exceptional electrical conductivity. PDA, acting as both a reducing agent and binder, supports the in-situ formation of AgNPs on the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets. These AgNPs prevent the restacking of Ti 3 C 2 T x layers, further improving conductivity. The sensor exhibited sensitivities of 0.145 μA mM −1 , with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.181 mM (S/N = 3) in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), meeting the requirements for for sweat lactate detection. The sensor was integrated into a wearable micro-electrochemical platform paired with a custom Android application for real-time sweat analysis. Testing on human sweat demonstrated the platform's potential for practical fitness monitoring and healthcare diagnostics applications.

Nanocellulose-lignin films incorporating AgNPs for potential wound dressing: green synthesis, antioxidant ability, antibacterial capability and biocompatibility

Guo Lukuan,Xu Yongjian,Xu Qinghua,Jin Liqiang

Developing wound dressings from natural bioresources with high antibacterial properties and low drug resistance is highly desirable. In this study, bio-based films incorporated with Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) were fabricated via a green and facile route. Firstly, AgNPs were obtained by reduction of AgNO 3 with lignin nanoparticles (LNPs). Then the dialdehyde cellulose nanofibers (DACNFs) were prepared by periodate oxidation of cellulose nanofibrils, and mixed with LNP-Ag to fabricate composite films (DACNF-LNP-Ag). It was found that the higher the concentration of AgNO 3 , the smaller size and larger quantities of AgNPs. The incorporation of LNP-Ag endowed the composite films with high UV blocking and antioxidant properties. The tensile strength of the composite film with 2% LNP-Ag increased significantly from 44.5 MPa to 62.6 MPa. After 1-h immersion in water, the wet tensile strength of the composite films decreased to 18.5–27.5 MPa, but much higher than that of wet CNF film. The incorporation of LNP-Ag resulted in a decrease in water adsorption of the composite films while exhibiting insignificant influence on water contact angle (WCA) and water transmission rate (WVTR). The survival rate of L929 cells was more than 90% after been co-cultured with leachate of the composite films for 24 h, indicating their good biocompatibility. The composite films demonstrated high BSA adsorption and antibacterial activities against E. coli and S. aureus . These advantages of the composite films exhibit promising potential as the wound dressing. Graphical Abstract

Application of Cu-Graphene (porous)-AgNPs for quantitative SERS detection of transformer Oil-Paper insulation aging characteristics

Dingkun Yang,Yu Lei,Zhou Fan,Weigen Chen,Fu Wan

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), functioning as a highly sensitive trace detection tool, has gained popularity as an analytical technique and is extensively employed in diverse domains such as electrical engineering. In this paper, the exploration is conducted regarding the application of surface-enhancement technology in the quantitative detection of the aging characteristics of transformer oil-paper insulation. Flower-like silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were deposited in situ on a copper foil coated with porous graphene, thereby fabricating a Cu-graphene (porous)-AgNPs surface-enhanced substrate. This substrate effectively prevented the oxidation of nanoparticles while maintaining the SERS activity. By creating apertures in graphene, the adsorption capability of the substrate for organic small molecules like furfural was enhanced, and the size of silver nanoparticles was optimized to achieve better detection outcomes. The performance of the substrate was evaluated using R6G as the probe molecule, and the findings indicated that the substrate exhibited excellent sensitivity, uniformity (RSD values are below 10 %), and antioxidant properties (after 30 days, the peak strength decreased by 8.23 %). When this substrate was utilized for the detection of transformer aging characteristics, the detection limits for furfural, acetone, and methanol reached 0.04 mg/L, 0.18 mg/L, and 0.18 mg/L respectively, fulfilling the analytical requirements of oil-immersed transformers. This research holds significant importance in guaranteeing the stable operation of the power supply system and the smooth development of the national economy.

Preparation and mechanism study of ZnO ammonia gas sensor based on precious metal nanoparticles (AuNPs, AgNPs) modification

Xudong Li,Hongyan Zhang,Chu Chen,Haiyang Zhang,Chen Yang,Xiujuan Ma

A high-sensitivity NH 3 sensor based on gold nanoparticles or silver nanoparticles (AuNPs or AgNPs) modified ZnO (Au/ZnO or Ag/ZnO) was synthesized using hydrothermal method and the sensing mechanism was explained by density functional theory (DFT). Experimental results indicate that AuNPs or AgNPs modification can effectively improve the sensing characteristics of the ZnO-based NH 3 sensor, which is due to more hydroxyl groups, oxygen vacancies and oxygen free radicals on the surface of Au/ZnO or Ag/ZnO. The responses of AuZn2 and AgZn2 sensors to 1000 ppm NH 3 at room temperature are 7321.07 and 9329.79, which are 22.48 and 28.65 times higher than that of the ZnO sensor respectively. The low detection limits of the AuZn2 and AgZn2 sensors is 0.495 ppm and 0.405 ppm. The fast response/recovery times to 15 ppm NH 3 is 0.9 s / 0.9 s or 1.5 s / 0.9 s. DFT calculation results show that AuNPs or AgNPs on the ZnO surface make D-band center of ZnO moves to a higher energy level, which increases the chemical activity of AuZn2 or AgZn2, thereby improving the adsorption energy to NH 3 molecule. This work provides a new idea for high-performance NH 3 sensors fabrication and broadens the application field of ZnO materials.

AgNPs@CeO2/Nafion Nanocomposite-Modified Electrode for the Sensitive Detection of Trace Lead (II) in Water Samples

Zhengying Guo,Peng Xu,Shiqing Zhou,Ruoxi Wu

Excessive levels of heavy metal pollutants in the environment pose significant threats to human health and ecosystem stability. Consequently, the accurate and rapid detection of heavy metal ions is critically important. A AgNPs@CeO2/Nafion composite was prepared by dispersing nano-ceria (CeO2) in a Nafion solution and incorporating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The morphology, microstructure, and electrochemical properties of the modified electrode materials were systematically characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). By leveraging the oxygen vacancies and high electron transfer efficiency of CeO2, the strong adsorption capacity of Nafion, and the superior conductivity of AgNPs, an AgNPs@CeO2/Nafion/GCE electrochemical sensor was developed. Under optimized conditions, trace Pb2+in water was detected using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The sensor demonstrated a linear response for Pb2+within the concentration range of 1–100 μg·L−1, with a detection limit of 0.17 μg·L−1(S/N = 3). When applied to real water samples, the method achieved recovery rates between 93.7% and 110.3%, validating its reliability and practical applicability.

Deep learning-based GQDs/AgNPs composite enhanced electrochemiluminescence portable biosensor for ultrasensitive point-of-care methimazole monitoring

Shunshun Bao,Shaoze Zhi,Xueying Yang,Yinfeng Wang,Zhengchun Yang,Jun Liu,Peng Pan,Yangyang Qi,Jie He

This study presents an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing platform based on graphene quantum dots/silver nanoparticles (GQDs/AgNPs) composites, combined with a lightweight deep learning model within a portable detection system to achieve highly sensitive point-of-care monitoring of methimazole (MMI). By utilizing the synergistic effect of GQDs interface modification and AgNPs localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), the sensor significantly enhances the ECL signal intensity of tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy) 3 2+ ) on paper-based electrodes, while exhibiting excellent stability. In addition, for the problem of uneven luminescent spot distribution and edge blurring in ECL images, we use an improved U-Net neural network model to achieve accurate extraction of the center bright luminescent spot through sub-pixel level segmentation and background noise suppression. The detection system utilizes a Raspberry Pi core with a 3D printing module to significantly reduce the time and cost per test, and achieves a detection limit of 0.327 nM (linear range: 10 −9 – 10 −3  M). Through the design strategy of “material-algorithm-system”, this study provides a highly sensitive, stable and practical solution for monitoring drug concentrations in the urine of hyperthyroid patients, which promotes the implementation of precision medicine in primary care.

Single-step synthesis of AgNPs@rGO composite by e-beam from DC-plasma for wound-healing band-aids

Chao Liu,Cao Fang,Changsheng Shao,Xinxin Zheng,Hangbo Xu,Qing Huang

Currently, there is a huge demand for medical biomaterials aimed to improve antibacterial effect and promote wound healing. In this work, a facile and single-step approach of synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite material (namely, AgNPs@rGO) using high-voltage direct-current (DC) non-thermal plasma was proposed. Electron-beam (e-beam) from the DC-plasma discharge zone was implanted into the solution of AgNO 3 and graphene oxide (GO), leading to the reduction of both GO and silver ions. As a result, AgNPs were formed and distributed homogeneously on the reduced graphene sheets. This composite material exhibits excellent antibacterial performance, being able to kill both Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) effectively. Furthermore, this composite material was utilized to prepare wound-healing band-aids. The in vitro assay on mice confirmed the satisfactory curing effect. The cytotoxicity for bio-compatibility and the mechanism for sterilization were also examined and clarified. As such, this work puts forward a facile and new route of preparing antibacterial biomaterial and demonstrates its promising prospect in wound-healing application.

Xin Liu,Shiyue Niu,Liqian Niu,Xian Wang,Xinxin Liu,Xin Guan,Xinyu Fan,Shuyun Bi

A highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) approach was established for the detection of monosultap using the nanosubstrate of β -CD/Trp/MgO/AgNPs which was MgO-protected silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) assembled tryptophan (Trp) and β -cyclodextrin ( β -CD). Six nanosubstrates including AgNPs, MgO/AgNPs, Trp/AgNPs, β -CD/MgO/AgNPs, Trp/MgO/AgNPs and β -CD/Trp/MgO/AgNPs were compared for their enhancement effect on monosultap. Among them, β -CD/Trp/MgO/AgNPs had the greatest enhancement effect, with an enhancement factor (EF) reaching up to 1.95 × 10 6 . The nanosubstrate of β -CD/Trp/MgO/AgNPs was characterized by various instrumental techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), zeta potential, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The binding of β -CD/Trp/MgO/AgNPs with monosultap was studied in detail. The optimum experimental conditions were confirmed through single-factor experiments and response surface analysis. The interferences from the coexisting substances (common metal ions, glucose and congeneric drugs) were investigated to evaluate the method selectivity. Under the optimal conditions, the standard curve equation of monosultap was established within the concentration range of 2.00 × 10 −8 –1.00 × 10 −6  mol L −1 , with detection limit (LOD) of 0.970 nmol L −1 (3 σ / S ). The SERS approach was utilized for detecting monosultap in several vegetables and fruits with the recoveries from 96.3 % to 105 %.

Liying Liu,Rui Cai,Yejing Wang,Gang Tao,Lisha Ai,Peng Wang,Meirong Yang,Hua Zuo,Ping Zhao,Hong Shen,Ahmad Umar,Huawei He

Antibacterial materials are of great importance in preventing bacterial adhesion and reproduction in daily life. Silver nanoparticle (AgNP) is a broad-spectrum antibacterial nanomaterial that has attracted significant attentions for its ability to endow natural materials with antibacterial ability. Silk sericin (SS) has a great advantage for biomaterial application, as it is a natural protein with excellent hydrophilicity and biodegradability. In this study, we prepared AgNPs and polyelectrolyte membrane (PEM) modified SS/Agar films through the layer-by-layer adsorption technique and ultraviolet-assisted AgNPs synthesis method. The film was well characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Other properties such as water contact angle, wettability and tensile strength, the release of silver were also studied. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs-PEM-SS/Agar film was investigated againstEscherichia coliandStaphylococcusaureus as the model microorganisms by the inhibition zone and bacterial growth curve assays. The results suggested that the AgNPs-PEM-SS/Agar film had excellent mechanical performance, high hydrophilicity, prominent water absorption ability, as well as outstanding and durable antibacterial activity. Therefore, the prepared novel AgNPs-PEM-SS/Agar composite film is proposed as a potentially favorable antibacterial biomaterial for biomedical applications.
