Improved interfacial mechanical properties of the Ag film metallized AlN substrate through an in-situ formed g-C3N4 nano-interlayer

Wenjie Feng,Haoran Song,Guijing Li,Xiaofei Wang

In this work, a nanocrystalline/amorphous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nano-interlayer was formed in-situ between AlN substrate and Ag film through ultrasonic spraying combined with subsequent heat treatments . The interface mechanical behavior and failure mechanism of the novel AlN/Ag structures with different thicknesses of g-C 3 N 4 nano-layers were investigated using experimental and numerical simulation methods. Following four-point bending test, the debonded surfaces of Ag film and AlN were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results demonstrated that the in-situ-formed g-C 3 N 4 nano-interlayer significantly improved the mechanical properties of the AlN/Ag interface due to the mechanical interlocking effect combined with the strong interfacial bonding strength . The g-C 3 N 4 nano-interlayer effectively relieved stress concentration near the Ag film and delayed the interfacial damage in the AlN/Ag structure, leading to significant improvement in interfacial fracture toughness . The thickness of g-C 3 N 4 nano-layers played a critical role in determining the mechanical performance of the AlN/Ag structure. Specifically, the structure with 90 nm thick g-C 3 N 4 interlayer exhibited the highest critical fracture energy G IC and maximum interfacial peeling stress σ max , with increases of 442 % and 132 %, respectively, compared with that without g-C 3 N 4 .

Research on the thermal conductivity and dielectric properties of AlN and BN co-filled addition-cure liquid silicone rubber composites

Zhenzhen Ou,Feng Gao,Huaijun Zhao,Shumeng Dang,Lingjian Zhu

The present work aims at studying the thermal and dielectric properties of addition-cure liquid silicone rubber (ALSR) matrix composites using boron nitride (BN) and aluminum nitride (AlN) as a hybrid thermal conductive filler. Composite samples with different filler contents were fabricated, and the density, thermal conductivity, thermal stability, dielectric properties, and volume resistivity of the samples were measured. According to the experimental results, the density, thermal conductivity, dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent values all increased with the increasing addition of filler. When the weight fraction of hBN filler was 50 wt%, the thermal conductivity of composites was 0.554 W (m−1 K−1), which is 3.4 times higher than that of pure ALSR. The corresponding relative permittivity and dielectric loss were 3.98 and 0.0085 at 1 MHz, respectively. Furthermore, TGA results revealed that the AlN/BN hybrid filler could also improve the thermal stability of ALSR. The volume resistivity of ALSR composites was higher than that of pure ALSR. The addition of fillers improved the thermal properties of ALSR and had little effect on its insulation properties. This characteristic makes ALSR composites attractive in the field of insulating materials.

In situ construction of vertically aligned AlN skeletons for enhancing the thermal conductivity of stearic acid-based phase-change composites

Chang Yu,Pan Yang,Baokai Wang,Mengyi Li,Mengyang Niu,Kunjie Yuan,Weiwei Xuan,Qipeng Lu,Wenbin Cao,Qi Wang

As the global energy crisis intensifies, phase change materials (PCMs) for energy storage have attracted increasing attention in thermal energy storage and thermal management fields. However, due to the lack of an effective thermally conductive network inside, traditional PCMs generally exhibit low thermal conductivity, seriously hampering their practical applications. In this study, vertically aligned AlN skeletons were rationally constructed by freezing casting combined with an in situ carbothermal reduction method and further used as reinforcements to enhance the thermal conductivity of stearic acid (SA)-based PCMs. Benefiting from fast heat transfer channels constructed by the tightly oriented arrangement of AlN particles, the AlN/SA PCMs achieved a highest thermal conductivity of ∼5.74 W m−1 K−1 at a 47.9 vol% filling fraction, exhibiting a thermal conductivity enhancement of 2633.33% compared with that of pure SA. Furthermore, the as-prepared AlN/SA PCMs also exhibited competitive phase transition latent heat, superior thermal stability and liquid leakage resistance, presenting significant application prospects in the fields of thermal management and thermal storage.

High-Tg shape memory polyimide composites with “spot-plane” directional thermally conduction structure based on AlN nanoparticles and acidified graphene

Xiaofei Wang,Yang He,Xinli Xiao,Wei Zhao,Jinsong Leng

In order to enhance the thermal conduction property and shorten response time of shape memory polyimide (SMPI), “spot-plane” directional thermally conductive acidified graphene/AlN/SMPI composites were prepared, in which AlN nanoparticles were used as “thermal conduction spots” and acidified graphene was used as two-dimensional “thermal conduction planes”. The SMPI composite doped with 6 wt% AlN and 0.8 wt% acidified graphene had good heat conducting properties (the in-plane thermal conductivity of 5.90 W m −1 K −1 ), excellent mechanical propertied (the tensile strength of 134.5 MPa, and Young’s modulus of 3.8 GPa), high shape memory transition temperature (at 419 ℃), and great thermal stability and shape memory properties. Compared with SMPI resin matrix, the response time of the acidified graphene/AlN/SMPI composite was shortened by 140 s, only 20 s, and it can be applied in flexible electronics, intelligent response structures and active deformation structures in high-temperature environment.

Impact of Sintering Aid Type and Content on the Mechanical Properties of Digital Light Processing 3D-Printed Si3N4 Ceramics

Qing Qin,Lin Han,Gang Xiong,Zihan Guo,Junwei Huang,Yujuan Zhang,Zhen Shen,Changchun Ge

Digital light processing (DLP) 3D-printed Si₃N₄ ceramics, known for their exceptional performance, offer distinct advantages in meeting the high-strength and complex structural demands of industries such as aerospace, semiconductors, healthcare, automotive, energy, and machinery. However, due to Si₃N₄’s strong chemical stability, low diffusion rate, low self-sintering ability, and high melting point, achieving densification under conventional sintering conditions is challenging. As a result, sintering additives are essential to promote the sintering process, lower the sintering temperature, improve densification, and enhance performance. In this study, 45 vol% Si₃N₄ slurries were prepared using DLP 3D printing technology, incorporating nine different combinations of sintering additives, including aluminum oxide (Al2O3), yttrium oxide (Y2O3), and aluminum nitride (AlN), in various ratios with Si3N4. The slurries were then sintered at 1800 °C for 2 h under a 1 MPa N2atmosphere. Additionally, the phase composition, microstructure, grain distribution, and crack propagation of the materials. The results showed that a Si3N4to Al2O3and Y2O3ratio of 95:2.5:2.5 produced elongated β-Si3N4grain structures and enhanced density, achieving a maximum Vickers hardness of 12.88 ± 0.52 GPa. Additionally, the synergistic toughening effect of the rod-like β-Si3N4grains and sintering aids significantly improved the fracture toughness of the Si3N4ceramic matrix, with a flexural strength of 540.63 ± 10.05 MPa and a fracture toughness of 4.92 ± 0.07 MPa·m1/2. This study lays the foundation for the future application of 3D-printed Si3N4ceramics, optimization of sintering aid combinations at different ratios, and performance enhancement in extreme environments.

Cytarabine delivered by CD44 and bone targeting redox-sensitive liposomes for treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia

Wu Hao,Gao Yuan,Ma Jia,Hu Maosong,Xia Jing,Bao Shuting,Liu Yuxi,Feng Kai

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) remains a serious fatal disease for the patients and effective treatment strategies are urgently needed. Based on the characteristics of the AML, we developed the CD44 and bone targeting liposomes delivery system decorated with the redox-cleavable polymer. First, ALN-HA was obtained by amination between alendronate (ALN) and hyaluronic acid (HA), and cholesterol (Chol) was coupled by a disulfide linker (-SS-) with biological reducibility to obtain the goal polymer, ALN-HA-SS-Chol, decorated the liposomes loaded with the Cytarabine (AraC). ALN-HA-SS-AraC-Lip exhibited a spherical morphology with the diameter of 117.5 nm and expanded at the environment of 10 mM dithiothreitol. Besides, compared with other groups, ALN-HA-SS-AraC-Lip showed benign hydroxyapatite affinity in vitro and bone targeting in C57/BL6 mice, also, ALN-HA-SS-AraC-Lip exhibited encouraging antitumor which significantly reduced the white blood cell amount in bone marrow and blood smear caused by AML model, besides, the dual targeting liposomes also prolong the survival time of mice. In conclusion, the bone and CD44 dual targeting liposomes with redox sensitivity could target to the leukemia stem cells regions and then uptake by the tumor cells, which would be a valuable target for the treatment of the AML.

Low dielectric loss AlN ceramics fabricated via DLP 3D printing achieving high strength and thermal conductivity through plasticizer and optimized debinding

Dajun Xu,Yanwei Huang,Liang Cai,Biao Yi,Yingjie Guo,Guangfan Tan,Zhen Shen,Yingchun Zhang

The influence of plasticizer PEG300 on the rheological and curing properties of AlN suspensions was firstly investigated. • The synergistic effect between plasticizer PEG300 and dispersant BYK110 was investigated. • The impact of debinding schedules on the properties of DLP-printed AlN ceramics was clarified. • The quality factor ( Q×f) was firstly introduced as a key evaluation metric for AlN ceramics in ceramic substrate. In this study, Digital Light Processing (DLP) was used to fabricate aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramics for electronic ceramic substrate. To address the two extreme issues of poor rheology and poor photocuring ability of slurry, the high-performance 50 vol% AlN suspensions were prepared through the combined use of the dispersant polyphosphoester and plasticizer PEG300. Meanwhile, to overcome the challenge of removing the excess organic matter from the 3D-printed green bodies, the optimal debinding and sintering schedule was established: debinding in a vacuum environment firstly, next decarburization is performed in air atmosphere, followed by final sintering in N 2 sintering furnace. Under this schedule, the AlN ceramics achieve the relative density of 99.3%, flexural strength of 344 ± 5 MPa, thermal conductivity of 172.5 W/(m·K). Furthermore, dielectric properties were evaluated in this work: the AlN ceramics exhibited optimal dielectric performance of ε r = 8.36, tan δ = 1.22 × 10 −3 at 14.3 GHz ( Q×f = 11754.6 GHz).

An ultrahigh-thermal-conductivity, durable and multifunctional superhydrophobic coatings via molecular interface engineering of AlN on aluminum substrate for thermal management

Jinyu Pi,Debiao Xiao,Senlin Deng,Ziyong Xu,Tangyou Sun,Zhimou Xu

The grafting mechanism of CTMS molecules on the AlN surface is systematically investigated. • H-AlN-C exhibits ultrahigh thermal conductivity (78.77  W/m·K). • H-AlN-C exhibits superhydrophobicity, along with excellent durability, self-cleaning, and anticorrosion properties. Developing multifunctional superhydrophobic coatings with high thermal conductivity remains a significant challenge due to the trade-off between surface wettability and efficient heat transfer. Bioinspired by the hydrolysis-prone nature of the aluminum nitride (AlN) surface, hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (CTMS) is covalently grafted onto AlN nanoparticles to construct a robust, multifunctional superhydrophobic coating (H-AlN-C) with high thermal conductivity. At high surface-modified AlN nanoparticles (H-AlN) loadings (90.9 wt%), H-AlN-C achieves an ultrahigh thermal conductivity of 78.77 W/m·K, while its abrasion resistance is relatively limited. In contrast, H-AlN-C with moderate H-AlN content exhibits a balanced performance, maintaining durable superhydrophobicity after 500 abrasion cycles together with a thermal conductivity of 7.1 W/m·K. Both coatings display high water contact angles (up to 171.9°), self-cleaning capability, and effective corrosion protection. Real-time thermocouple monitoring under cyclic heating–cooling conditions further verifies efficient and stable heat dissipation. MD simulations reveal that the reduced interfacial energy and lower diffusion coefficient of water clusters provide theoretical validation for superhydrophobic behavior of the H-AlN-C surface. These outstanding properties are enabled by the homogeneous dispersion and dense packing of H-AlN within the fluorocarbon resin matrix. Such interpenetrating architecture imparts both high surface roughness and low surface energy, enabling durable superhydrophobicity while supporting efficient heat dissipation. Ultrafine electrospun fiber based on ionic liquid/AlN/copolyamide composite as novel form-stable phase change material for thermal energy storage

Chao Lin,Weipei Li,Yurong Yan,Hanhan Ke,Zhengyu Liu,Lingli Deng,Zhiming Qiu

A novel form-stable phase change material (FSPCM) based on ionic liquid/aluminum nitride/copolyamide composite were fabricated from electrospinning approach. The ionic liquid 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (IL) was chosen as phase change materials while nano aluminum nitride (AlN) and copolyamide 6/12 (CoPA) were chesen as additive and supporting matrix, respectively. The surface morphology and heat storage property had been systematically investigated by Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), respectively. Results showed that the diameter of the phase change fibers are 0.92–1.07 μm and was influenced by the IL and AlN content. With 57 wt% of IL and 5 wt% of AlN, the composite fiber achieved a fusion enthalpy of 86.4 J/g and the thermal conductivity was increased by 165.2% compared to that of IL/CoPA. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and thermal cycle test also indicated a good thermal stability and reusability of the composite fiber. Furthermore, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses indicated that new hydrogen bonds between IL and CoPA were formed in the composite and showed a significant effect on the thermal performance of the composite fibers. The electrospun composite fiber based on ionic liquids can be applied as form-stable phase change material in thermal energy storage and temperature regulation.

High thermal conductivity insulating AlN/poly(m-phenylenedicarbonyl-m-phenylenediamine) paper realized by enhanced compatibility: a selection of appropriate coupling agent

Rui Yang,Hao-ou Ruan,Si-di Fan,Kai-xuan Sun,Sheng-hui Wang,Xiang Yu,Fang-cheng Lü

Encouraged by the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emission by 2050, the exploration of insulating material becomes one of the core projects to the electrical equipment innovations. The rise of composites enables the insulating material to be endowed with more functions. By this concern, adopting the coupling agents is one of the effective methods to improve the compatibility of composites, which highly strengthens the desired properties. The functional groups of coupling agents, nevertheless, could not always show a positive impact to access enhanced properties. In this work, four types of silane coupling agents including amino-propyl, glycidyletheroxy-propyl (GP), vinyl, and methacryloxy-propyl functional groups are employed to modify the aluminum nitride (AlN) fillers, and the modification effects on the insulating and thermal conductivity of the AlN/poly(m-phenylenedicarbonyl-m-phenylenediamine) (PMIA) composite paper are systematically investigated and compared. The results show that a proper coupling agent is beneficial to the uniform dispersion of the inorganic filler in the organic matrix and highly contributes to their interface quality, where the heat transfer path is established that boosts the heat dissipation. By tailoring the trap depth and density toward deeper and higher, the carrier transport is highly confined which enhances the breakdown strength to a large extent. Therefore, high breakdown strength and thermal conductivity of 182.9 kV mm−1 and 0.302 W (m·K)−1, respectively, are achieved in the GP modified AlN/PMIA paper, which are 16.7% and 167.4% higher than that of pure PMIA paper.

Novel thermal-insulating and microwave-absorbing AlN/C aerogels prepared via solvent-free ambient pressure aging combined with carbothermal reduction nitridation technique

Qi You,Fuhao Xu,Ya Zhong,Sheng Cui

The rapid progress in aerospace development has created severe thermal and electromagnetic environmental challenges. There is a significant increase in the need for thermal protective materials that combine thermal insulation and electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) capabilities. Herein, we developed an innovative solvent-free ambient pressure aging (SFAPA) method combined with carbothermal reduction nitridation (CRN) to synthesize novel aluminium nitride/carbon aerogels (ACs). The hydrogen-bonding network enables the Al 2 O 3 nanorods to adhere robustly to the resorcinol/formaldehyde (RF) intermediate, ensuring efficient RF entrapment throughout the SFAPA process. The SFAPA method eliminates the need for aging and replacement processes, significantly reducing production costs. Investigating the reaction mechanism of ACs revealed that the carbon layer effectively prevents the formation of α-Al 2 O 3 , improving reaction efficiency. Concurrently, the carbon layers undergo a progressive process of structural ordering toward graphitization. The support provided by the nanorods results in a low shrinkage rate of 3.68 % for the ACs. The as-prepared ACs are lightweight (0.037 g/cm 3 ) and have low thermal conductivity (0.0332 W·m −1 ·K −1 ). Besides, the carbon layer effectively shields the AlN, enabling the ACs to exhibit good oxidation resistance even after a 10-min exposure to 1300 °C butane flame, while maintaining a low backside temperature of 132.6 °C. AlN/C10 exhibits outstanding microwave absorption performance, achieving a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −60.37 dB (17.33 GHz, 1.62 mm) and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.55 GHz (12.45–18 GHz, 1.87 mm). The successful fabrication of the ACs pioneers a way for the design and manufacture of AlN-based aerogels for thermal insulation and microwave absorption.

Effects of AlN addition on the reactive sintering behavior and comprehensive properties of h-BN/ZrO2 composites prepared by spark plasma sintering

Yuannong Qu,Ji Zou,Weimin Wang,Wei Ji,Zhengyi Fu

The h-BN/ZrO 2 composites for preparing ceramic side sealing plate were obtained with spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1700 °C for 10 min in the study. By varying AlN content from 0 to 20 wt%, we systematically explored its influence on sintering behavior, microstructure evolution, mechanical performance, and corrosion mechanism at1600 °C. Results show that the rapid heating and uniaxial pressure during SPS and the in-situ reactions between AlN and ZrO 2 promoted the densification of composites. The main reaction products were ZrN, which acted as an effective oxygen scavenger, consuming dissolved oxygen ([O]) and converting into ZrO 2 . These newly formed ZrO 2 particles filled residual porosity within the matrix and nucleated around pre-existing ZrO 2 grains, progressively coalescing into continuous Zr-rich barrier layer.Thereby preventing molten steel from further penetrating into the matrix. The corrosion depth of the composite with 5 wt% AlN content in molten steel at 1600 °C after 2 h was only 69 μm. Meanwhile, it showed a thermal conductivity of 25 W m −1 K −1 and a coefficient of thermal expansion of 3.7 × 10 -6 K −1 , demonstrating excellent thermal shock resistance. The composites are expected to be used to manufacture side sealing plates for the novel continuous casting of thin strip.
