High-sensitivity optical fiber SPR temperature sensing probe based on Au-PDMS@Au coating

Ting Liu,Zhipeng Lin,Changfei Lai,Wei Guo,Shouyu Wang

To enhance the sensitivity of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) temperature sensing probes, we propose a new prototype with a PDMS@Au sensing layer on the gold (Au) film of the multi-mode fiber (MMF)-single-mode fiber (SMF)-MMF heterojunction structure. This designed probe has improved the temperature sensitivity from −1.26 nm/°C (Au-PDMS) to −2.14 nm/°C (Au-PDMS@Au), maintaining good repeatability and stability. Moreover, the probe can be fabricated with simple procedures at a low cost. Therefore, this probe is a promising tool for temperature sensing in various applications.

Synergistic effects of Au nanoparticles in SiO2@Au@Polyaniline system for improved photothermal performance

Fan Chuan,Tian Meng,Li Haidong,Zhang Min,Ma Meijing,Liu Guodong

A SiO 2 @Au@Polyaniline (SiO 2 @Au@PAN) system has been successfully fabricated leveraging the synergistic effects of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to realize enhanced photothermal performance. The SiO 2 @Au@PAN exhibited strong near-infrared (NIR) absorbance, excellent photothermal conversion efficiency, good dispersibility, and outstanding photostability. The SiO 2 nanospheres as the template provided numerous binding sites for coating of AuNPs. Subsequently, aniline was grafted onto SiO 2 to form PAN, which further facilitated the growth of AuNPs. The high efficiency of electron transfer from PAN to AuNPs was utilized to enhance the photothermal performance, resulting in a photothermal conversion efficiency of 41.47%. Additionally, the effects of SiO 2 with different sizes on the anchoring of AuNPs and the impact of aniline with varying concentrations on the morphology and photothermal properties of the materials were investigated. Finally, we verified the photothermal therapeutic (PTT) effect of SiO 2 @Au@PAN at cellular level, with results demonstrating effective destruction of cancer cells. This work may provide an approach for establishing a multi-component PTT platform based on the synergistic effects of AuNPs, holding significant potential for biomedical and biochemistry applications. Unraveling Plasmonic Field Contributions in Catalysis with Au@Al2O3-Pd-Au@Al2O3 Trimer Arrays

Lei Yao,Yunjia Wei,Xing Zhao,Xiangnan Zhu,Dexiang Chen,Xiao Tang,Xingce Fan,Teng Qiu,Qi Hao

Plasmonic catalysis employs nanomaterials to mediate the conversion of photon energy into localized electromagnetic fields, hot carriers, and thermal energy, facilitating molecular transformations under mild conditions. Understanding the mechanisms governing plasmonic effects is crucial for optimizing the yield and selectivity in plasmonic catalysis. However, challenges persist in elucidating the role of plasmonic field effects due to the complex interactions among various contributing mechanisms. This study introduces Au@Al 2 O 3 -Pd-Au@Al 2 O 3 trimer arrays to decouple plasmonic field effects from other influences. The alumina coating on the Au particles prevents charge transfer between gold and reactants, enabling focused examination of the field effects on Pd catalysts. Employing real-time monitoring with liquid-state surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), this work investigates the catalytic efficiency and kinetics of the C─C coupling reactions on palladium by tuning the near-field strengths. Polarization-dependent studies reveal that strong near-field intensity around the trimer structures is amplified by ≈60-fold under optimized conditions. The findings offer insights for optimizing catalytic reaction conditions and designing more effective composite plasmonic catalysts.

Au@Ag Nanopencil with Au Tip and Au@Ag Rod: Multimodality Plasmonic Nanoprobe based on Asymmetric Etching for the Detection of SCN− and ClO−

Zhao He,Jian Zhu,Xin Li,Guo-Jun Weng,Jian-Jun Li,Jun-Wu Zhao

In this paper, Au@Ag nanopencil is designed as a multimodality plasmonic nanoprobe based on asymmetric etching for the detection of SCN − and ClO − . Au@Ag nanopencil with Au tip and Au@Ag rod is prepared by asymmetric tailoring of uniformly grown silver-covered gold nanopyramids under the combined effect of partial galvanic replacement and redox reaction. By asymmetric etching in different systems, Au@Ag nanopencil exhibits diversified changes in the plasmonic absorption band: O 2 •− facilitated by SCN − etches Au@Ag rod from the end to the tip, causing a blue shift of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak as the aspect ratio decreases; while the ClO − can retain Au@Ag shell and etch Ag within rod from the tip to the end, causing a redshift of the LSPR peak as the coupling resonance weakens. Based on peak shifts in different directions, a multimodality detection of SCN − and ClO − has been established. The results demonstrate the detection limits of SCN − and ClO − are 160 and 6.7 n m , and the linear ranges are 1–600 µ m and 0.05–13 µ m , respectively. The finely designed Au@Ag nanopencil not only broadens the horizon of designing heterogeneous structures, but also enriches the strategy of constructing multimodality sensing platform.

Synthesis and solar photo-thermal conversion of Au, Ag, and Au-Ag blended plasmonic nanoparticles

Meijie Chen,Yurong He,Jian Huang,Jiaqi Zhu

An experimental investigation was performed on the solar photo-thermal conversion performance of Au, Ag and Au-Ag blended Nanoparticles (NPs). The experimental results showed that both the temperature and photo-thermal conversion efficiency increased as the Au NP volume fraction increased. However, nanofluids with lower NP volume fractions showed a higher Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) since the photon-absorption of each NP was limited. Plasmonic Au and Ag nanofluids showed a better photo-thermal conversion performance than semiconductor ZnO and TiO 2 nanofluids. The photo-thermal conversion efficiency of Au-Ag blended NPs (1.75–0.15   ppm) was 30.97%. This is almost equal to the arithmetic sum (30.91%) of the photo-thermal conversion efficiencies of Au NPs (1.75   ppm) and Ag NPs (0.15   ppm) separately because of the separate absorption of different wavebands by the Au and Ag NPs. Our work provides a promising method for preparing working fluids for solar photo-thermal conversion by mixing different NPs to match the solar spectral intensity instead of increasing the volume fraction of the same NP.

Conversion of Au(III)-polluted waste eggshell into functional CaO/Au nanocatalyst for biodiesel production

Jiadi Liu,Minghuan Liu,Shaoyun Chen,Bingqing Wang,Jin Chen,Da-Peng Yang,Shangzhou Zhang,Wenxiao Du

Developing an environmental-friendly and highly active catalyst in transesterification for biodiesel production is of great importance for a more economic biodisel process. Herein, we reported that waste eggshells were used to adsorb Au(III) in water and convert the Au(III)-polluted eggshells into the functional nanocatalyst-CaO/Au for the transesterification reaction between soybean oil and methanol to the preparation of biodiesel. By coupling of CaO and Au nanoparticles, CaO/Au nanoparticles showed superior catalytic activity for the transesterification reaction between soybean oil and methanol. An optimum performance was observed over CaO/Au nanocomposites in a methanol-oil molar ratio at 12 : 1 with catalyst content of 1.0 wt% at 70 °C for 3 h. Besides, the catalytic activity of CaO/Au nanocatalyst was almost unchanged after recycling for 5 times and the yield of biodiesel still kept at 88.9%. The proof-of concept study provided us a sustainable method for utilization of waste eggshells to remedy the metal ions-polluted wastewater and the synthesis of functional nanocomposite for biodiesel production, show great potential application of waste eggshell in adsorption and catalytic reactions.

Surface plasmons and SERS application of Au nanodisk array and Au thin film composite structure

Wang Xiangxian,Wu Yuan,Wen Xiaolei,Zhu Jiankai,Bai Xuelin,Qi Yunping,Yang Hua

A composite structure of an Au nanodisk array and an Au film is designed to excite local surface plasmons and propagating surface plasmons and generate strong resonance coupling. The finite difference time domain method was used to study the surface plasmons effect of the structure. The composite substrate of an Au disk array with a 760-nm period and a 130-nm diameter was prepared via electron beam lithography. The SERS characteristics of the substrate were studied using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a Raman probe molecule. The Raman intensity of R6G on the substrate reached values as high as 82.9% of the first measurement intensity, after the SERS substrate had been exposed to the atmosphere for 30 days. The results show that the proposed substrate yields good uniformity, reproducibility, and stability, thereby providing an effective and feasible scheme for the detection of molecules.

Flexible and transparent Au nanoparticle/graphene/Au nanoparticle ‘sandwich’ substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Jun Dong,Xing Zhao,En Cao,Qingyan Han,Liang Liu,Wenwen Zhang,Wei Gao,Jian Shi,Zhuanping Zheng,Dongdong Han,Mengtao Sun

In this work, we designed and fabricated a simple and convenient Au nanoparticle/graphene/Au nanoparticle (AuNP/G/AuNP) flexible ‘sandwich’ substrate on the surface of the polyethylene (PE) film through self-assembly. The coupling effect between the AuNPs enables this substrate to strongly enhance the local electromagnetic field , and graphene can also provide additional chemical improvement. Experimental results show that the low Rh6G concentration (10 −9  M) located on the surface of the AuNP/G/AuNP substrate can be detected. Furthermore, the flexible and transparent AuNP/G/AuNP substrate can detect low concentrations of thiram (0.24 ppm) on the surface of orange peels. This low concentration is below the maximum residue limit (5 ppm) regulated by the National Standard of China in fruits and vegetables. Therefore, this flexible substrate can be used as an effective surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor for in situ detection in food safety and environmental monitoring.

Au-CeO2 composite aerogels with tunable Au nanoparticle sizes as plasmonic photocatalysts for CO2 reduction

Hao Tang,Zi Ang Chen,Muchen Wu,Shunbo Li,Ziran Ye,Mingjia Zhi

Tuning the size of Au nanoparticles is always an interesting task when constructing Au/semiconductor heterojunctions for surface plasmon resonance-enhanced photocatalysis. In particular, the size of Au nanoparticles in the newly emerging “plasmonic aerogel” photocatalyst concept could approach the size of the semiconductor phase. This work provides an alternative route to realize the size tuning of Au nanoparticles in Au-CeO 2 composite aerogels to some extent, within the framework of the well-established epoxide addition sol–gel method. The size tuning is achieved by exploiting the multi-functionalities of a mixed organic acid additive containing a thiol group in the gelation step. The obtained aerogel photocatalysts are composed of a porous backbone of interconnected CeO 2 nanoparticles and Au nanoparticles, and the size of Au nanoparticles ranges from ∼30 nm to sub-10 nm, while the size of CeO 2 remains at ∼15–10 nm. The surface plasmon resonance peak position and intensity contributed by the Au nanoparticles then vary accordingly. Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction at the gas–solid interface is chosen as a model reaction to study the effect of Au nanoparticle size on the photocatalytic activity of composite aerogel photocatalysts. The addition of Au nanoparticles undoubtedly enhances the overall activity of the CeO 2 aerogel photocatalyst, while the degree of enhancement (in terms of total charge consumption) and product selectivity (CH 4 or CO) are different and correlated with the size of the Au nanoparticles. The best performance can be achieved in a composite in which the Au sizes are the smallest.

Photoelectric Response Difference between KTaO3/ Au and K2Ta2O6/Au Nanocrystals Resulting from Potassium Tantalate Structure

Sheng Ding Chang,Mu Wei Ji,Chang Xu Yan,Bo Li,Jin Wang

Potassium tantalates is one kind of important semiconductor with potential applications on photoelectric transformation and photocatalysis. Herein, Au nanoparticles were grown on the surface of two kinds of potassium tantalates, KTaO3 nanocubes and K2Ta2O6 nanooctahedron, by flexible reducing HAuCl4, and KTaO3/Au and K2Ta2O6/Au hetero-nanostructures were formed. Although the Au nanoparticles loading enhances the light absorption, KTaO3/Au and K2Ta2O6/Au hetero-nanostructures exhibit different photoelectric properties. The difference of photoelectric properties of two kinds of potassium tantalates/Au hetero-structures hint the photoelectric-property enhancement depends on multiple factors.

Au-Ag@Au fiber surface plasmon resonance sensor for highly sensitive detection of fluoroquinolones residue

Qiang Xu,Huiting Yin,Ze Zhao,Mei Cui,Renliang Huang,Rongxin Su

Antibiotic residue detection plays an important role in protecting human health, but real-time, rapid, and highly sensitive detection is still challenging. Herein, gold and silver nanoparticles (Au-Ag NPs) were in situ grown on the surface of optical fibers and a 50-nm thick gold film was deposited on the sensor's surface to fabricate Au-Ag@Au fiber SPR sensor. The sensitivity of the sensor reached 3512 nm/RIU in the refractive index range of 1.328-1.371. When analyzing antibiotic residues in food, the detection limits for Enro and Cip were 0.97 ng mL-1 and 0.70 ng mL-1, respectively. The recoveries of them ranged from 96.64-115.32% and 96.18-121.06% in milk samples. There is a high level of antibiotic residues in meat, milk, and aquatic products and this study has significant potential in food safety testing applications. Moreover, this study will be widely used in environmental monitoring (such as heavy metal ions), medical diagnosis (viruses), marine exploration, drug screening and other analytical fields as well.

Atomically dispersed Au confined by oxygen vacancies in Au-θ-Al2O3/Au/PCN hybrid for boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction driven by multiple built-in electric fields

Chunmei Li,Pingfan Zhang,Fang Gu,Lei Tong,Jizhou Jiang,Yan Zuo,Hongjun Dong

A new Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au/PCN hybrid is fabricated by the collaborative design strategy of active site and assembled structure, which achieves highly efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) performance. The energy band structure of PCN is adjusted significantly owing to the strong coupling effect of Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au nanosheets intercalated in PCN nanosheets. The result brings about up-shift of CB, VB and Fermi energy level overall and decrease of bandgap, which is in favor of harvesting visible light, exciting VB electrons and increasing reduction ability. In addition, the multiple built-in electric fields are induced by electron diffusion effect between structural units, due to the tight interface contact in the Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au/PCN hybrid, which can effectively promote the separation of photoinduced charge carriers. Furthermore, the atomically dispersed Au atoms confined by the oxygen vacancies in Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au can provide the plenty of effective active sites for CO 2 R reaction, and meanwhile, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect induced by Au nanoparticles on Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au can improve the visible light response and produce abundant hot electrons to contribute to CO 2 R reaction. As a consequence, the average CO evolution rate of over the optimizing 10 %-Au-θ-Al 2 O 3 /Au/PCN hybrid (7.76 μmol g -1 h −1 ) reaches up to 3.53 times than that of PCN (2.20 μmol g -1 h −1 ) in the CO 2 R reaction, and maintains basically stable operation within 7 cycles of running, suggesting the superior activity and recyclability.
