Aiming at the problems of low bonding strength and large modulus difference at the interface between carbon fibers (CFs) and resin matrix, this research achieved in-situ growth of an adhesive "metal-phenolic" complex network (TA@Fe 3+ ) on CFs surfaces. Additionally, a modulus gradient transition layer featuring alternating "rigid-flexible" interlayer structures ((TA@Fe 3+ -GO) 2 ) was further constructed. The flexible TA@Fe 3+ complex network boosts chemical bonding at the fiber-resin interface, whereas the rigid GO enhances load transfer and dispersion. Through the synergistic effect of "interfacial adsorption-physical reinforcement", the interfacial strength is improved. The alternating “rigid-flexible” interfacial layer reduces the modulus mismatch between CFs and the resin by expanding the interfacial phase thickness and slowing the modulus decline rate, thereby minimizing interfacial stress concentration. Compared with UCF/PPESK composites, the modified composites exhibit a 40.4% increase in flexural strength and a 70% increase in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). This study offers novel perspectives on the design of multi-level gradient modulus interlayer structures and the fabrication of strong-interfacial carbon fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites (CFRPs).

Amid burgeoning population growth and rapid industrialization, freshwater resources are under mounting pressure. This study introduces a novel interfacial evaporator employing a biomimetic spider-cavity structure composed of Ag nanoparticle-decorated polydopamine-coated CuO x /NiO composite on copper foam (Ag/PDA@NiCuO/CF). This design integrates hierarchical micro-nano architectures that maximize light absorption (91 %) and enhance localized photothermal conversion. Bilateral siphon-driven channels independently manage seawater supply and brine drainage, effectively preventing salt accumulation on the photothermal surface. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed evaporator, under one sun illumination, achieves an evaporation rate of 1.50 kg m −2 h −1 and a solar-to-steam conversion efficiency of 96.7 %. It maintains stable evaporation performance under high salinity (20 wt% NaCl) and shows no salt deposition after 10 h of continuous evaporation, exhibiting excellent anti-salt deposition capability. Practical outdoor tests further validate its reliability, with stable operation and an average evaporation rate of ∼1.58 kg m −2 h −1 over 9 h. Ion concentration and electrical resistance tests confirm its high desalination efficiency, meeting the drinking water standards set by the WHO. Overall, this spider-cavity structured evaporator represents an innovative solution to address solar desalination challenges, particularly in salt management and stable, high-efficiency water purification.

Impedance mismatch and high-temperature oxidation are two main factors that limit the practical application of carbon-based absorbing materials. Although micro/nano-structured composites have been explored to alleviate these issues, they often suffer from dispersion instability and structural fragility. In this work, a coaxial composite fiber microwave absorber (Al 4 C 3 /Al 2 O 3 @C f ) is fabricated using carbon fiber (C f ) as a template and conductive core, with an Al 4 C 3 /Al 2 O 3 ceramic shell grown in situ via a vapor–solid reaction. Compared to pristine C f , which exhibits negligible absorption, the optimized composite achieves a minimum reflection loss of −49.27 dB, attributed to interfacial polarization and a built-in capacitor-like structure. Meanwhile, the material also features excellent oxidation resistance and thermal insulation (0.0567 W m −1 K −1 at 100 °C). This study presents a structurally controllable, thermally robust absorber design that overcomes key limitations of traditional carbon-based materials, offering a promising solution for next-generation electromagnetic protection in aerospace and harsh environments.

The relationship between the interfacial bonding properties and the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced ZrB 2 –ZrC–SiC composites (C f /ZrB 2 –ZrC–SiC) is currently under investigation. In this study, C f /ZrB 2 –ZrC–SiC composites with varying fiber–matrix interfacial bonding properties were prepared using slurry infiltration and in-situ reactive hot pressing. Polydopamine-derived carbon with different thicknesses was employed as the interphase to create various interfacial bonding properties, where interfacial bonding properties were evaluated using the single-fiber push-out method. Results indicated that a uniform and dense ZrB 2 –ZrC–SiC matrix was constructed, and low-porosity composites without fiber degradation were obtained. For composites with a higher interfacial shear strength (ISS) of 342 MPa, flexural strength and fracture toughness were 209 MPa and 7.5 MPa·m 1/2 , respectively. For composites with a lower ISS of 64 MPa, flexural strength and fracture toughness increased by 41% and 13%, with showing non-brittle behavior and work of fracture up to 10 kJ·m 2 . By combining analyses of thermal expansion behavior, residual thermal stresses, and thermal shock properties at ultrahigh temperatures, thermal mismatch and thermal damage can be minimized through the modulation of ISS. This approach is beneficial for optimizing the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced ceramic composites.

Chopped ultra-thin carbon fiber tape reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) composites are considered promising materials for balancing the mechanical properties and ease of processing, particularly due to their in-plane quasi-isotropy, which facilitate structural design and manufacturing in the industry. However, further advancement is hindered by the weak interfacial bonding and modulus mismatch between carbon fiber (CF) and PA6 matrix, as well as high porosity of the CF/PA6 composites. In this work, plasma treatment and mixed COOH-carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/PA6 sizing methods are proposed to enhance the surface roughness (Ra) and surface energy of the CF. Compared to untreated CF, the Ra value and surface energy of the modified CF increased by 45.1 % and 69.7 %, respectively. After 0.6 wt% COOH-CNTs modification, the tensile strength, Young's modulus, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composites reach 900.0 MPa, 48.4 GPa, and 62.3 MPa, which are respectively 24.9 %, 19.8 %, and 36.9 % higher than those of the unmodified composites. In particular, the porosity is reduced to 1.22 %, which is 73.3 % lower than that of unmodified composites. Moreover, the [email protected] wt% CNT/PA6 composites exhibit mitigatory modulus gradient across the interphase. This work synergistically enhances the interface adhesion and reduces the porosity of the CF/PA6 composites via a large-scale continuous modification technology.

The low interlaminar fracture toughness and thermal properties of carbon fiber/epoxy resin (CF/EP) composites limit their applications in harsh environments. Synergetic improvement of the interlaminar fracture toughness and thermal conductivity of CF/EP is a challenging research job. In this paper, the surface of CF/EP prepregs was coated by multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and PEEK, and then the modified CF/EP laminates were prepared by compression molding process. The effects of MWCNTs and PEEK on the mechanical properties and thermal properties of CF/EP laminates were investigated. The results showed that the type II interlaminar fracture toughness, impact strength, and thermal conductivity of the CF/EP laminates synergistically modified by 0.5 wt% MWCNTs, and 2 wt% PEEK reached 1404 J/m 2 , 277 J/m 2 , 0.89 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 100°C, which were 81%, 42% and 82% higher than that of unmodified CF/EP laminate, respectively. And thermal stability of CF/EP laminate was improved. The addition of MWCNTs and PEEK reduces the loss factor of CF/EP laminates. This work is of great significance to realize the integration of structure and function of composite materials in the high-performance applications.

While interfacial enhancement in carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites typically involves coupled mechanisms, the specific contributions of each mechanism remain poorly quantified. In this study, infiltration and crystallization are systematically decoupled and quantified by using poly aryl ether ketone (PAEK) sizing agents with controlled molecular weights (2000–8000) and distinct crystallization behaviors (para-crystalline and meta-amorphous). The roles of infiltration kinetics and interfacial crystallization are isolated by synthesizing PAEK polymers with identical chemical structures but varying intrinsic viscosities and crystallinities. Results reveal that crystallization contributes a consistent interfacial shear strength (IFSS) enhancement of approximately 26 MPa, nearly independent of molecular weight. In contrast, infiltration enhancement increases inversely with molecular weight, increasing from 13 MPa to 32 MPa as intrinsic viscosity decreases. Synergistic optimization achieves a record IFSS of 110.02 MPa in CF/PEEK composites. This work establishes a dual-factor decoupling strategy for quantifying interfacial mechanisms and provides a scalable approach for high-performance thermoplastic composite design.

The sandwich structure with ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) skin and carbon form (CF) core is the ideal thermal structural components with excellent thermal protective and lightweight properties in hypersonic vehicles. However, the temperature gradient and mismatch of thermal conductivity between CMC skin and CF core result in the thermal stress in sandwich structures. Therefore, core material CF with matching thermal conductivity have become very important to prevent cracks and debonding of the sandwich structure. In this work, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced carbon foam composites with different microstructure were fabricated using simple phenolic resin foaming followed by CVI process. The prepared CF display a very low density of 0.075 g/cm 3 and a relatively high compressive strength of 1.65 MPa. By controlling the distribution position and content of CNTs the thermal conductivity of core materials CF/CNTs (4.93 W·m − 1 ·K − 1 which is ~ 13 times higher than that of CF) can be regulated to compatibility with CMCs skin (3.5 ~ 6.0 W/m·K). And the thermal conductivity evolution mechanisms of the CF/CNTs from room temperature to 1200 ℃ were revealed. High interfacial thermal resistance by phonon scattering between the CF and CNTs blocks the solid conduction of materials at room temperature. With the increase of the temperature, radiative heat transfer between CF and CNTs becomes more violent and dominates the heat transfer path. The C/CMCs-CMCs sandwich structure was fabricated quickly by the in situ foaming method.

Sizing agent is a thin layer of resin evenly covering the surface of carbon fibers, which plays an important role in interface and mechanical propertiesin carbon fiber/polyaryl ether ketonecomposites (CF/PAEK). In this study, a novel waterborne phenolphthalein-type polyaryletherketone-poly(styrenesulfonate) sodium (PEKC-NaPSS) sizing was specifically synthesizedby a simple, efficient and environmentally friendly UV induced grafting method, and was sized on CF surface. PEKC-NaPSS exhibits high thermal stability, with a decomposition temperature above 450 °C, meeting the processing temperature of CF/PAEK composite. Relative to desized CF/PAEK composites, the 1 wt% PEKC-NaPSS sized CF/PAEK composites exhibited significant enhancements in flexural strength, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of 38.03%, 38.2%, and 28.67%, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanism for interface improvement in PEKC-NaPSS sized CF/PAEK composites has been proposed. This study provides a straightforward and eco-friendly approachof producing high-performance CF/PAEK composites.

The advancement of structural-functional thermoplastic composites with integrated electromagnetic shielding (EMI) and mechanical properties represents a key trend in aerospace. A key challenge is ensuring EMI performance and robust interfacial properties under the high processing temperatures of thermoplastic matrices. In this study, nickel plating on carbon fibers (CFs) was used to enhance the electrical conductivity of the composites. Sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) was then employed on the nickel-plated CFs to improve the interfacial performance between fibers and the PEEK matrix. The results showed that introducing 2% SPEEK increased the ILSS and tensile strength of CF-Ni/PEEK composites by 25.1% and 25.6%, respectively. Additionally, CF-Ni-SPEEK/PEEK composites showed an 18.8% improvement in EMI shielding effectiveness, achieving an ILSS (Interlaminar Shear Strength) of 46.4 MPa and EMI SE of 36.1 dB. These results provide valuable insights for designing advanced composites with combined structural and functional properties for aerospace applications.

In this study, a novel environmentally friendly water-based sizing agent (HPPAEN-COOH) was designed and prepared This sizing agent exhibited good thermal stability and stability in aqueous solutions, significantly improving the interfacial and tribological properties of CF/PPEK composites. Compared to UCF/PPEK composites, the wear coefficients under dry friction and oil lubrication conditions were reduced by 52.3 % and 46.3 %, respectively. Furthermore, the interfacial strengthening mechanism of the sizing agent was investigated from a microscopic perspective using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Both experimental and simulation results demonstrated that the use of the sizing agent effectively enhanced the interfacial interaction between the resin and the fiber. This study offers novel insights for the development of high-performance thermoplastic resin-based composites and for understanding the microscopic mechanisms of their interfacial modification.

Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) composite has an extensive application. However, the performances of CF/PA6 composite are constrained by the poor interfacial adhesion between CF and PA6 matrix. In this article, in order to strengthen the interfacial adhesion of CF/PA6 composite, a layer of poly(cyclotriphosphazene- co -4,4′-sulfonyldiphonel) (PZS) hybrid coating with plenty of PZS microspheres (PZSMS) was successfully introduced onto CF surface through facile in situ polymerization. After surface modification, the surface morphologies and the surface chemical structures of fibers changed distinctly. On one hand, the PZSMS provided more contact points and increased mechanical interlocking between CF and PA6 matrix. On the other hand, numerous hydrogen bonds between CF and PA6 were formed due to a great amount of unique polar groups on modified CF surface. Consequently, in comparison with untreated CF, the interfacial shear strength of CF-PZSMS/PA6 composites was improved from 37.68 ± 3.16 to 53.79 ± 3.38 MPa, by 42.75 ± 3.02%. The results indicated that PZS hybrid coating on fiber surface effectively improved the interfacial adhesion of CF/PA6 composites, and the stronger hydrogen bonding and the enhanced mechanical interlocking synergistically played a major role in such significant improvements.
