Ni-MOFs/CNTs Nanohybrid Catalysts for Thermoelectric Hydrogen Peroxide

Linhao Zhang,Hong Liu,Jianming Zhang,Fagen Wang

Harnessing low-grade thermal energy from industrial processes and the environment represents an attractive route toward sustainable chemical production. In this work, we report a thermoelectrocatalytic (TE-Catal) system capable of converting small temperature gradients into chemical energy for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation. A hybrid catalyst composed of nickel-based metal–organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs) nanoparticles integrated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs), Ni-MOFs/CNTs, was synthesized through a facile one-pot strategy. Under a temperature gradient, the thermoelectric response of the Ni-MOFs induces charge carrier generation through the Seebeck effect, enabling interfacial redox reactions that produce H2O2. However, rapid recombination of thermally generated carriers typically limits catalytic efficiency. By coupling Ni-MOFs with conductive CNTs networks, charge separation and transport are significantly enhanced due to the strong interfacial interaction and the high electrical conductivity of CNTs. As a result, the Ni-MOFs/CNTs nanohybrids exhibit greatly improved H2O2generation rate of ~111.7 µmol g−1h−1compared with pristine Ni-MOFs (31.8 µmol g−1h−1). Thermoelectric electrochemical measurements confirm that the CNT incorporation effectively promotes carrier migration and suppresses recombination. This study demonstrates the potential of MOF-based thermoelectric nanostructures for transforming waste heat into valuable chemical products.

Fenton-like degradation of sulfamerazine at nearly neutral pH using Fe-Cu-CNTs and Al0-CNTs for in-situ generation of H2O2/OH/O2−

Yong Chen,Zhao Yang,Yunbo Liu,Yong Liu

In this paper, a novel Fenton-like system was constructed by a new catalyst (CNTs-Fe-Cu) combined with Al 0 -CNTs to in situ generate H 2 O 2 from activating O 2 for the degradation of sulfamerazine (SMR). The CNTs-Fe-Cu composite was prepared and characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS and BET methods. The results showed that H 2 O 2 could be generated in-situ by Al 0 -CNTs composite under oxygen aeration, which was then converted to OH and O 2 − radical by CNTs-Fe-Cu composite. The high removal efficiency of SMR could be obtained in Al 0 -CNTs/CNTs-Fe-Cu/O 2 system at a relatively broad range of pH. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of SMR and total organic carbon (TOC) was 85% and 60%, respectively under the following condition: initial pH = 5.8, T = 25 °C, O 2 flow rate = 400 mL/min, CNTs-Fe-Cu = 1 g/L, Al 0 -CNTs = 1 g/L, SMR = 50 mg/L, reaction time = 60 min. In addition, the intermediate products of SMR degradation were identified and the possible degradation pathways of SMR and the degradation mechanism of Al 0 -CNTs/CNTs-Fe-Cu/O 2 process were tentatively proposed.

Nitrite Oxidation with Copper–Cobalt Nanoparticles on Carbon Nanotubes Doped Conducting Polymer PEDOT Composite

Junjie Wang,Guiyun Xu,Wei Wang,Shenghao Xu,Xiliang Luo

Graphical Doubling Up : Cu−Co nanoparticles were deposited onto the PEDOT/CNTs (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene/carbon nanotubes) nanocomposite surface through a simple electrochemical approach, and the prepared electrode modified with Cu−Co/PEDOT/CNTs exhibited excellent catalytic properties towards the electrochemical oxidation of nitrite. Copper–cobalt bimetal nanoparticles (Cu−Co) have been electrochemically prepared on glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs), which were electrodeposited with conducting polymer nanocomposites of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Owing to their good conductivity, high mechanical strength, and large surface area, the PEDOT/CNTs composites offered excellent substrates for the electrochemical deposition of Cu−Co nanoparticles. As a result of their nanostructure and the synergic effect between Cu and Co, the Cu−Co/PEDOT/CNTs composites exhibited significantly enhanced catalytic activity towards the electrochemical oxidation of nitrite. Under optimized conditions, the nanocomposite-modified electrodes had a fast response time within 2 s and a linear range from 0.5 to 430 μ m for the detection of nitrite, with a detection limit of 60 n m . Moreover, the Cu−Co/PEDOT/CNTs composites were highly stable, and the prepared nitrite sensors could retain more than 96 % of their initial response after 30 days.

Interface-engineered porous PDMS-MWCNTs composites through HPC-mediated “sponge pump absorption” strategy for high-performance triboelectric nanogenerators

Luyao Luo,Bin Zhang,Yanzi Lei,Dawei Chai,Danling Zhang,Kuang Xu,Niandi Chen,Shiyu Hu,Hui-Ling Peng,Hai Wang

PDMS-CNTs composite-based TENGs exhibit promising potential in mechanical energy harvesting due to their flexibility and processing versatility; however, the inherent limitations of PDMS and poor dispersion of CNTs severely restrict their performance. Despite various modification strategies, existing approaches often compromise material properties, making it crucial to develop effective solutions for high-performance TENG devices. Herein, we introduce an innovative approach to fabricate high-performance TENGs based on porous polydimethylsiloxane/multi-walled carbon nanotubes/hydroxypropyl cellulose (PDMS-MWCNTs/HPC) composites through a unique "sponge pump absorption" method. Using HPC as a molecular bridge enables stable MWCNTs dispersion and uniform deposition within porous PDMS framework. The resultant composite foam exhibits exceptional mechanical resilience with 99 % recovery after 60 % compression and enhanced electrical output, achieving peak voltage and current of 149.09 V and 262.72 nA at 87 % porosity under 40 N force. The hierarchical porous structure, formed by unfiltered NaCl templates, significantly enhances surface charge density and charge transfer efficiency, while maintaining essential dielectric properties through HPC incorporation. The device demonstrates reliable performance in powering LEDs and exhibits distinct electrical responses to various mechanical deformations including stretching, twisting, and bending. This strategy presents an effective approach for fabricating high-performance TENG devices with great potential in self-powered sensing and sustainable energy harvesting applications.

Advancing multifunctional thermal management with multistate graphene/CNTs conjugated hybrids

Meng Lan,Xiaohua Jia,Rui Tian,Lei Feng,Dan Shao,Haojie Song

The formation of heat conduction pathway is the key to fulfill the demand for versatile thermal management. However, constructing a three-dimensional (3D) thermal bridge in a single step is challenging and entails the critical co-dispersion of multiple fillers. Here we propose a simple and controllable method to assemble conjugated hybrids of 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with 2D graphene through hydrothermal centrifugation. In addition to armoring CNTs through the conjugation effect, ionic liquid crystals (ILC) assisted the CNTs to exfoliate graphite, facilitating the co-dispersion of the binary material. Remarkably, the resulting graphene/CNTs (GC) hybrids acquire hydrophilicity from the ILC and manifest diverse states depending on the water content, including octopus-like blocks, self-limiting gels, high-concentration slurries, and dilute dispersions. Hybrid nanocomposite papers containing ANF nanofibers with 3D thermally conductive bridges yield exceptional photothermal conversion performance and Joule heating performance, rendering them suitable for flexible wearable applications. The multistate GC hybrids presented here afford a novel reference for the one-step construction of 3D thermally conductive bridges.

Formation mechanism of Fe-based multi-catalysts for growing CNTs

Peng Wang,Chenyu Gao,Qianpeng Dong,Lianlian Wang,Dianming Chu,Yan He,Wenjuan Bai

s The application of carbon nanotubes in materials science is rapidly expanding, leading to an increasingly urgent demand for large-scale synthesis. Central to the growth of carbon nanotubes is the development of effective catalysts; thus, the large-scale production of these catalysts becomes crucial for successful carbon nanotube synthesis. Extensive research has been conducted on the mechanisms and regulation of interfacial interactions between metals and supports during catalyst synthesis. This paper is based on the interface interactions between common metal catalysts such as Fe, Co, Ni, and Al 2 O 3 , and Fe-Co, Fe-Ni, and Fe-Co-Ni metal catalysts were prepared by a one-step method. The catalysts were synthesized through a "one-step process," and the formation mechanisms of bimetallic and trimetallic catalysts, as well as the influence of interfacial interactions on catalyst formation and catalytic activity, were thoroughly investigated. The results indicate that with the involvement of Fe, Co and Ni on the surface of Al 2 O 3 maintain a small size morphology due to interfacial interaction. Meanwhile, the nanoparticles form a doped structure with Al 2 O 3 , effectively avoiding the deactivation of nanoparticles caused by agglomeration. In addition, the three catalysts for growing CNTs were analyzed in order to investigate the effects of different concentrations of metal ratios and time of carbon source on the catalytic activity, which provides new ideas for improving the catalyst design system.

Improved fracture toughness of CNTs/SiC composites by HF treatment

Pengcheng Chen,Siyi Jing,Yanhui Chu,Pinggen Rao

Residual oxide impurities in high-temperature structural ceramics containing carbon-based reinforcements can react with the reinforcements during sintering to weaken their toughening effect. To eliminate such effect, a simple HF treatment technique is proposed. In this work, SiC ceramics and carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/SiC ceramic composites were fabricated by spark plasma sintering . The results showed that, after HF treatment, the structure of incorporated CNTs in the composites was unaffected and a slight improvement of relative density was fulfilled. The fracture toughness improvement of the composites from 4.4 ± 0.4 MPa m 1/2 to 5.4 ± 0.5 MPa m 1/2 with indentation method (IM) after HF treatment was also observed due to crack branching, CNT pull-out and crack bridging.

CNTs/Wood Composite Nanogenerator for Producing Both Steam and Electricity

Yafei Ding,Shuyao Li,Jingwen Tian,Fan Wang,Yuxiang Shi,Xinglin Tao,Xingling Wang,Rui Lei,Xiangyu Chen

Solar steam generation, which utilizes solar heat to evaporate water, has been considered a promising technology to produce clean water. Meanwhile, the water evaporation process along the microchannels can be also utilized to generate electricity. Here, based on a piece of multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT)-modified woodblocks, we proposed a CNTs/wood composite nanogenerator to produce both water steam and electricity. This hybridized system can achieve a maximum solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency obtained in CNT wood of up to 77.4% under 1 sun illumination (1000 W m–2), while the electric power generated between the surface water and bulk water can reach 0.35 mW m–2 in Fe-CNT HNG (under an external resistance of 10 kΩ) during water evaporation in deionized water. These experimental results provide a different strategy for the utilization of water and solar resources, demonstrating the potential for producing both steam and electricity under sunlight simultaneously.

PdAgRu nanoparticles on polybenzimidazole wrapped CNTs for electrocatalytic formate oxidation

Tesfaye Tadesse Gebremariam,Fuyi Chen,Bo Kou,Longfei Guo,Bowei Pan,Qiao Wang,Zhen Li,Weiqi Bian

Direct formate fuel cells (DFFCs) have received great interest as potential candidates of power sources, and their viability primarily relies on exploration of efficient formate oxidation reaction (FOR) catalysts. Herein, we have prepared PdAgRu nanoparticles supported on polybenzimidazole wrapped carbon nanotubes (pCNTs), Pd 6 Ag 3 Ru 1 /pCNTs catalyst which displays remarkable mass activity of 4.7 A mgPd −1 and maintains current density of 0.71 A mg −1 after 5400 s of chronoamperometry test, which is 2.1 and 26.7 times better than that of commercial Pd/C catalyst, respectively. The performance improvement is attributed to delicately designed components, polybenzimidazole layer serves as hydroxide transporter, carbon nanotubes function as electron conductive path, Ag weakens binding strength of adsorbed hydrogen (H ads ) on Pd, and Ru promotes the formation of hydroxyl species. Impressively, when the upper limit potential of cyclic voltammetry is enlarged into Ag redox region, the FOR activity remarkably increases, the mass activities are 4.30, 4.7 and 5.12 A mgPd −1 at 1.1, 1.3 and 1.5 V, respectively. The closer examination of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra reveal the co-existence of mixed Pd(0)/Pd(II) and Ag(0)/Ag(I) state on the catalyst surface. The amount of Pd(0) and Ag(I) state increase with increasing upper limit potential, which is attributed to surface restructuration.

Microwave-Assisted Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants via CNTs/TiO2

Yuqing Ren,Yao Chen,Qinyu Li,Hexing Li,Zhenfeng Bian

Introducing microwave fields into photocatalytic technology is a promising strategy to suppress the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Here, a series of microwave-absorbing photocatalysts, xCNTs/TiO2, were prepared by combining titanium dioxide (TiO2) with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using a typical alcoholic thermal method to study the promotion of microwave-generated thermal and athermal effects on the photocatalytic oxidation process. As good carriers that are capable of absorbing microwaves and conducting electrons, CNTs can form hot spots and defects under the action of the thermal effect from microwaves to capture electrons generated on the surface of TiO2and enhance the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons (e−) and holes (h+). Excluding the influence of the reaction temperature, the athermal effect of the microwave field had a polarizing effect on the catalyst, which improved the light absorption rate of the catalyst. Moreover, microwave radiation also promoted the activation of oxygen molecules and hydroxyl groups on the catalyst surface to generate more reactive oxygen radicals. According to the mechanism analysis, the microwave effect significantly improved the photocatalytic advanced oxidation process, which lays a solid theoretical foundation for practical application.Keywords:photocatalysis;microwave;degradation;xCNTs/TiO2

Designable high-performance TPU foam strain sensors towards human-machine interfaces

Yuefeng Gu,Zhenghao Zhang,Feifan Fan,Lisi Wei,Tiancheng Wu,Dakai Wang,Qiuhong Li

Flexible, breathable, and stable sensors were important in developing human–computer interaction systems and novel wearable devices. However, major challenges were still faced in two aspects, 1) high-performance strain sensors with a large sensing range, and 2) an interaction mode that is both convenient and efficient. Herein, we developed a thermoplastic polyurethane large-skeleton foam (TPU-LS foam) through a steam-induced method. The strain sensor comprised three layers of breathable foam, with CNTs/rGO TPU-LS foam as the inner layer and pure foam as the protective layer. PDMS/TiO 2 was sprayed to create a UV-resistant and self-repairing coating, achieving a 66% melanin inhibition rate and a 91% repair rate. The sensor presented a wide work range over 100%, a high gauge factor of 637.8, and long-term durability. We trained machine learning frameworks to recognize different gestures and designed two types of human–computer interaction applications, allowing users to operate apps with gestures.

CNTs/ferrihydrite as a highly efficient heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for the degradation of bisphenol A: The important role of CNTs in accelerating Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling

Runliang Zhu,Yanping Zhu,Haiyang Xian,Lixia Yan,Haoyang Fu,Gangqiang Zhu,Yunfei Xi,Jianxi Zhu,Hongping He

The generation of Fe(II) from Fe(III) is the rate-limiting step in the heterogeneous Fenton reaction, and accelerating this step is critical for enhancing the reaction efficiency and also the subject of extensive studies. In this work, the oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were coupled with ferrihydrite (Fh) to synthesize novel and highly efficient heterogeneous Fenton catalysts (CNTs/Fh). Interestingly, the calculated apparent rate constants by 3%CNTs/Fh could reach ∼7.1 times as high as that by Fh, well in agreement with the accelerated decomposition rate of H 2 O 2 , as well as the enhanced generation rate of Fe(II) and hydroxyl radicals in the CNTs/Fh system. The density functional theory calculations and the cyclic voltammograms curves both well indicated that the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycling on CNTs/Fh could be significantly enhanced during the Fenton reaction, from both dynamic (accelerating the electron transfer from H 2 O 2 to Fh) and thermodynamic (lowering Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox potential) aspects.
