Suppressing Jahn–Teller distortion in Mn2O3 via Ca2+ doping for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Yujie Shen,Qian Hu,Ruoyu Liu,Pingle Tang,Zhenyu Wang,Jing Hu,Botian Liu,Liqing He,Ningchen Tian,Qing Zhu

Ca 2+ doping suppresses Jahn–Teller distortion in Mn 2 O 3 via charge compensation. • Ca 2+ -doped Mn 2 O 3 achieves 118.1 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 . • Accelerated Zn 2+ diffusion and reduced charge transfer resistance are achieved. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have gained significant attention owing to their high energy densities, low costs, and good safety. However, developing cathodes with high capacity and structural stability remains challenging. Herein, we propose a Ca 2+ doping strategy to design a high-performance Mn 2 O 3 cathode via a facile hydrothermal-calcination method. The Ca 2+ substitution has a dual functional effect: 1) it triggers charge compensation that converts partial Mn 3+ to Mn 4+ , decreasing the Mn 3+ / Mn 4+ ratio and reducing Jahn–Teller active centers; 2) it shortens the Mn O bonds, thereby reinforcing the Mn O framework and stabilizing the crystal structure. Consequently, in pure ZnSO 4 electrolyte, the optimized Ca 2+ doped cathode (CMO7) delivers a high specific capacity of 214.7 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 , far surpassing pristine Mn 2 O 3 (102.3 mAh g −1 ). In a hybrid ZnSO 4 /MnSO 4 electrolyte, CMO7 achieves a higher capacity of 227.8 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 and retains 88% of its capacity after 500 cycles at 1000 mA g −1 . This study provides a new perspective on the development of advanced Mn-based cathodes for durable aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Synergistic modification of V2O5 cathodes with Ca2+ and chitosan: Structural regulation and performance enhancement

Kang Mei,Tengteng Gao,YiJiang Qu,Yanhuai Ding

Vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ), owing to its high theoretical capacity and layered structure, is considered a promising cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). However, its practical application is limited by sluggish Zn 2+ diffusion and structural instability during cycling. In this work, Ca 2+ and chitosan co-modified V 2 O 5 (VO-CS-Ca) was synthesized from commercial V 2 O 5 via an alcohol-assisted solvothermal method. XRD analysis revealed that the interlayer spacing of the (200) plane increased from 0.577 to 0.585 nm after co-modification. SEM and BET analyses confirmed the formation of a porous nanoflower-like architecture, with the specific surface area increasing from 14.99 m 2  g −1 for VO to 23.55 m 2  g −1 for VO-CS-Ca. Benefiting from the expanded interlayer spacing and optimized interfacial properties, the VO-CS-Ca electrode delivered an initial specific capacity of 310.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , maintained 105 mAh g −1 after 1400 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 , and retained 92 mAh g −1 after 4500 cycles at 5.0 A g −1 . EIS and GITT results confirmed reduced charge-transfer resistance and enhanced Zn 2+ diffusion kinetics, while ex-situ XRD/XPS revealed reversible V 5+ /V 4+ redox behavior and structural evolution during Zn 2+ storage. These results indicate that Ca 2+ /chitosan co-modification effectively tailors the interlayer structure and surface/interface environment of V 2 O 5 , offering a feasible route for high-performance V 2 O 5 cathodes in AZIBs.

Efficient Degradation of Antibiotic Pollutants in Water by Ca2+/Ce3+ Co-Doped Bi2O2CO3 Photocatalysts

Yu Zhang,Yangang Sun,Luyao Pan,Zhaoxia Wen,Min Shi,Hao Li

Aiming at the bottleneck problems of limited visible light response range and high carrier recombination rate of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 (BOC) photocatalyst, Ca 2+ /Ce 3+ co-doped Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 composite photocatalyst was constructed by hydrothermal method. The analysis of different characterization techniques shows that double doping can lead to lattice distortion and induce oxygen defects. Under visible light irradiation, the degradation efficiency of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and levofloxacin (LVX) by BOC-Ca-Ce4 reached 92.56 % and 90.39 %, respectively, and maintained a certain degradation efficiency in complex water bodies such as tap water and lake water. ESR and capture experiments confirmed that •O 2 − and h + were the dominant active species. Mechanism analysis showed that the valence cycle of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and the local electric field of Ca 2+ synergistically promoted the spatial separation of carriers. Through intermediate product analysis, CIP was finally mineralized to CO 2 /H 2 O, and the ECOSAR toxicity assessment showed that the ecological toxicity was reduced. This study provides a new design strategy for energy band engineering of two-component doped photocatalysts.

OPTN ameliorates chondrocyte apoptosis in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis by modulating ER-mitochondria Ca2+ transfer

Xinyu Zhang,Haojie Liu,Yumeng Shi,Zhenhao Liu,Yan Wang,Simai Chen,Xingzhi Yan,Rongyao Xu,Junqing Ma,Qiang Chen,Shuyu Guo

Aims Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA) is a degenerative disease linked to disrupted chondrocyte activity and cartilage homeostasis. This study aimed to clarify the protective role of optineurin (OPTN) in preventing chondrocyte apoptosis during TMJ OA progression. Materials and Methods Using bioinformatics analysis, Optn was identified as a key gene in chondrocyte regulation. We employed a unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) model in vivo and Tunicamycin (TM) in vitro to investigate OPTN's role in TMJ OA. Makin scores and histological staining assessed cartilage degeneration, while flow cytometry measured chondrocyte apoptosis, mitochondrial, and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) calcium levels. Key Findings We demonstrated that OPTN deficiency accelerates arthritis progression by intensifying endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and chondrocyte apoptosis both in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, in vitro data showed that OPTN interacted with glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β), modulating the inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptor (IP3R)/glucose-regulated protein 75 (GRP75)/voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1) complex. This interaction affected ER-mitochondrial calcium transfer, elevating mitochondrial calcium, and promoting apoptosis. Inhibiting this calcium channel with SB216763 and 2-APB effectively reduced mitochondrial Ca 2+ overload and apoptosis. Significance These findings reveal the crucial role of OPTN deficiency in TMJ OA pathogenesis and propose that targeting the IP3R-GRP75-VDAC1 complex to alleviate mitochondrial calcium could offer new therapeutic strategies for TMJ OA.

PDP1 drives hepatocellular carcinoma progression by regulating senescence through the cAMP/Ca2+ signaling pathway

Jiamin Xie,Xiaojuan Pan,Yan Xia

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a lethal malignancy with limited therapeutic options. Cellular senescence exerts a critical role in tumor progression, but the regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigates the role of pyruvate dehydrogenase phosphatase 1 (PDP1) in modulating senescence-associated malignant progression in HCC. Our study suggests that PDP1 is upregulated in patients with HCC and is significantly associated with poor prognosis. Functionally, PDP1 induces cellular senescence, activates cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)/Ca 2+ signaling, and promotes senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP)-driven epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), stemness, and malignant progression. Xenograft models further demonstrate that PDP1 enhances tumor growth in vivo , accompanied by activation of senescence-associated pathways, including p16, p21, cAMP, and Ca 2+ . Adenylyl cyclase 5 (ADCY5), a membrane-associated enzyme responsible for catalyzing ATP into cAMP, is identified as a critical downstream mediator of these effects and serves as a major source of intracellular cAMP production. Mechanistically, PDP1 suppression enhances glycolysis and histone H3 lysine 18 lactylation (H3K18la), a recently identified lactate-derived epigenetic modification, leading to activation of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1), the primary enzyme maintaining DNA methylation patterns, and subsequent ADCY5 promoter hypermethylation and transcriptional silencing. Importantly, glycolysis inhibition restores senescence and reverses PDP1-driven malignant phenotypes. Collectively, these findings identify that PDP1 drives senescence-associated malignant progression in HCC by linking glycolytic regulation, histone lactylation, and DNA methylation to the control of ADCY5 expression and subsequent cAMP/Ca 2+ signaling, underscoring its potential as a therapeutic target.

CMAS corrosion behavior of Ca2+xGd8-x(SiO4)6-x(PO4)xO2 ceramic materials

Ying Chen,Yuxiang He,Jiaqi Hu,Junbin Sun,Weihong Lu

CaO-MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CMAS) will be melted and penetrated into the high-temperature protective coating exceeding 1200 °C, severely compromising its service life. Apatite-phase rare earth silicate, which often emerges as CMAS corrosion product, boasts exceptional thermophysical properties and shows significant promise for high-temperature thermal protection field. In this paper, two novel apatite materials Ca 2+x Gd 8-x (SiO 4 ) 6-x (PO 4 ) x O 2 (x = 1, 2) were synthesized via chemical co-precipitation and conducted CMAS corrosion tests at 1250 °C and 1350 °C, respectively. Results show that Ca 4 Gd 6 (SiO 4 ) 4 (PO 4 ) 2 O 2 readily reacts with CMAS, generating abundant Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 that bonds together, forming a protective barrier layer between the molten CMAS and the underlying ceramic material. The barrier layer is thickened by increasing corrosion time and remains stable over extended periods at 1250 °C. However, when the temperature rises to 1350 °C, the material severely degrades, and the corrosion products fail to form a Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 barrier layer. The Ca 4 Gd 6 (SiO 4 ) 4 (PO 4 ) 2 O 2 shows promise as a new thermal/environmental barrier coating ceramic material, offering resistance to CMAS corrosion at temperatures up to 1250 °C.

A Sono-Piezoelectric Scaffold Prompts Disc Regeneration by Activating Ca2+/CaMKII/Parkin-Mediated Mitophagy

Haiyang Gao,Wenbo Wu,Xianglong Chen,Pengzhi Shi,Anran Zhang,Wang Wu,Zimu Yu,Cao Yang,Zhangrong Cheng,Yukun Zhang

Mitochondrial dysfunction in nucleus pulposus (NP) cells is a key driver of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), leading to metabolic imbalance and cellular senescence. To address this, we developed an injectable "sono-electrical coupling" hydrogel (GBC@PNA) based on a thermosensitive P(NIPAM-AAM) network loaded with gallic acid, barium titanate and carbon nanotubes. Upon ultrasound exposure, the scaffold generates a localized micro-electric field and controllably releases gallic acid. This combined stimulation significantly enhanced the viability of degenerated NP cells, promoted extracellular matrix synthesis, and reduced inflammation and senescence in vitro. Mechanistically, the sono-electrical effect activated intracellular calcium signaling, leading to CaMKII-dependent mitochondrial translocation and phosphorylation of Parkin, thereby restarting PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy to clear damaged mitochondria and restore energy metabolism. This pathway was systematically validated through transcriptomics, protein interaction and functional inhibition studies. In a rat IDD model, the intervention effectively maintained disc height, improved histology and delayed degeneration, demonstrating good biosafety. This work pioneers a strategy that couples external physical energy with intracellular mitochondrial quality control, offering a novel "sono-electro-chemical" therapy for IDD and a new paradigm for "energy-biology"-based tissue engineering.

Fabrication of ionic wood crosslinked by Ca2+ with high strength, toughness, and weather resistance

Xuefeng Zhang,Huanbo Wang,Zhijun Chen,Shiyu Guo,Yuan Fu,Tian Liu

Fast-growing natural poplar wood is not meet with in many requirements such as high strength and flame retardant due to its porous structure and loose materials. In this study, we established a simple and feasible method that includes delignification, ionic bond formation via the crosslinking of carboxyl groups in TEMPO-oxidized wood after delignification with calcium ions , and hot-pressing of stacked veneers to improve the quality, density, strength, toughness, and weather resistance of natural wood (NW). This method has the following advantages: The inner cellulose microfiber is highly aligned, thus closely cross-linking and tightly bonding cellulose microfibers and nanofibers between the interfaces and inner layers of the wood boards via hydrogen bonding and ionic bonding. A laminated densified TEMPO-oxidized ionic wood (IW) showed substantially higher specific strength (∼196.9 MPa cm3 g−1), higher tensile strength (∼246 MPa), higher flexural strength (∼257 MPa), higher flexural modulus (∼36 GPa), higher impact toughness (∼42.34 kJ m−2), and superior fire retardancy, UV resistance, water resistance, and also higher density (∼1.25 g cm−3) than NW. Larger-size laminated densified structural materials with satisfactory thermal stability can also be fabricated using the proposed method.

Influenza A Viruses Enter Host Cells via Extracellular Ca2+ Influx-Involved Clathrin-Mediated Endocytosis

Meng-Ni Bao,Li-Juan Zhang,Bo Tang,Dan-Dan Fu,Jing Li,Lei Du,Yi-Ning Hou,Zhi-Ling Zhang,Hong-Wu Tang,Dai-Wen Pang

Influenza A virus (IAV) is internalized into its host cells by endocytosis, which involves many cellular proteins and molecules. In this study, we focus on the function of calcium ion (Ca2+) in IAV endocytosis. We have found that IAV infection is accompanied by the increase in concentration of cytosolic Ca2+, which is mainly attributed to the influx of extracellular Ca2+. When Ca2+ influx is abolished, IAV internalization will be markedly suppressed, but the virus attachment to its host cells will be unaffected. Extracellular Ca2+ influx is essential to the clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) of IAVs but dispensable to the clathrin-independent endocytosis of the virus and is dispensable to the CME of transferrin or low-density lipoprotein as a control. Ca2+ influx might participate in the dynamin-promoted membrane fission in the CME of IAVs. Our study highlights that IAVs enter host cells via extracellular Ca2+ influx-involved clathrin- and dynamin-dependent endocytosis, which will facilitate better understanding of IAV infection and development of anti-influenza drugs.

A reusable Fe3O4/GO-COOH nanoadsorbent for Ca2+ and Cu2+ removal from oilfield wastewater

Lei He,Lei Wang,Haomiao Zhu,Zhe Wang,Luxia Zhang,Lutao Yang,Yong Dai,Hong Mo,Jun Zhang,Jian Shen

Oilfield wastewater contains a large number of metal ions (such as Ca 2+ and Cu 2+ ). Reinjection in oil wells without treatment would affect oil recovery. To remove Ca 2+ and Cu 2+ ions, we prepared a reusable Fe 3 O 4 /GO-COOH nanoadsorbent by the magnetization and carboxylation of graphene oxide (GO). The Ca 2+ and Cu 2+ removal percents of the nanoadsorbent reached 78.4% and 51% at 60 min, respectively. After five adsorption/desorption cycles, the nanoadsorbent retained high recovery rates (82.1% for Ca 2+ and 91.8% for Cu 2+ ) and removal percents (72.3% for Ca 2+ and 49.33% for Cu 2+ ). In the simulated indoor oil recovery test, oilfield wastewater treated with Fe 3 O 4 /GO-COOH could enhance oil recovery (EOR) by 11.0% compared with untreated oilfield wastewater. The novel magnetic nanoadsorbent could not only adsorb metal ions in oilfield wastewater effectively to enhance oil recovery (EOR) but could also be quickly recycled and reused, which shows promising application prospects in oil exploitation.

Lipopolysaccharide Enhances Tanshinone Biosynthesis via a Ca2+-Dependent Manner in Salvia miltiorrhiza Hairy Roots

Bin Zhang,Xueying Li,Xiuhong Li,Zhigang Lu,Xiaona Cai,Qing Ou Yang,Pengda Ma,Juane Dong

Tanshinones, the major bioactive components inSalvia miltiorrhizaBunge (Danshen), are synthesized via the mevalonic acid (MVA) pathway or the 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol-4-phosphate (MEP) pathway and the downstream biosynthesis pathway. In this study, the bacterial component lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was utilized as a novel elicitor to induce the wild type hairy roots ofS. miltiorrhiza.HPLC analysis revealed that LPS treatment resulted in a significant accumulation of cryptotanshinone (CT) and dihydrotanshinone I (DTI). qRT-PCR analysis confirmed that biosynthesis genes such asSmAACTandSmHMGSfrom the MVA pathway,SmDXSandSmHDRfrom the MEP pathway, andSmCPS,SmKSLandSmCYP76AH1from the downstream pathway were markedly upregulated by LPS in a time-dependent manner. Furthermore, transcription factorsSmWRKY1 andSmWRKY2, which can activate the expression ofSmDXR,SmDXSandSmCPS, were also increased by LPS. Since Ca2+signaling is essential for the LPS-triggered immune response, Ca2+channel blocker LaCl3and CaM antagonist W-7 were used to investigate the role of Ca2+signaling in tanshinone biosynthesis. HPLC analysis demonstrated that both LaCl3and W-7 diminished LPS-induced tanshinone accumulation. The downstream biosynthesis genes includingSmCPSandSmCYP76AH1were especially regulated by Ca2+signaling. To summarize, LPS enhances tanshinone biosynthesis throughSmWRKY1- andSmWRKY2-regulated pathways relying on Ca2+signaling. Ca2+signal transduction plays a key role in regulating tanshinone biosynthesis inS. miltiorrhiza.Keywords:lipopolysaccharide;tanshinones;Ca2+signaling;SmWRKY

Novel non-trimesoyl chloride based polyamide membrane with significantly reduced Ca2+ surface deposition density

Bingbing Yuan,Pengfei Li,Honghong Sun,Shengchao Zhao,Peng Li,Haixiang Sun,Q. Jason Niu

Polyamide membranes based on trimesoyl chloride (TMC) have captured the majority of the market share for desalination in water treatment. The TMC based membrane is prone to form calcium bridges with the organic foulants due to the relatively strong deprotonation ability of the benzoic acid generated from the incomplete reaction of the acyl chloride monomers . The foulants are thus rapidly deposited on the surface of the TMC based membrane, which results in the deterioration of water production and decrease of membrane lifespan. Herein, we have fabricated a polyamide membrane based on novel trimesoyl-[4,4-dimethyl-5(4H)-azlactone] (TMDMA) monomer instead of TMC monomer. Since the carboxylic groups of the prepared TMDMA polyamide nanofilm are not directly connected to the phenyl ring, the acidity coefficient ( p K a ) value is higher and, consequently, deprotonation ability is expected to be weaker. To confirm this theory, we have conducted the fouling experiment on TMDMA based membrane using alginate as a model foulant and compared that with TMC based polyamide membranes. A lower flux decline (33%) and higher cleaning efficiency (90.72%) are observed for the TMDMA polyamide membrane, while the flux decline and cleaning efficiency for the TMC based polyamide membrane are 52% and 49.52% respectively. Furthermore, the average Ca 2+ density of the TMDMA polyamide membrane surface before and after cleaning are 81.52 mg m −2 and 21.61 mg m −2 respectively, which are lower than that of the TMC based polyamide membrane surface. Thus, it is clearly showing that the surface of the TMDMA polyamide membrane is not prone to form calcium bridges with foulants due to the weaker complexation between Ca 2+ and the carboxylic acid groups.
