Lead ions (Pb(Ⅱ)) cause serious environmental pollution and endanger human health and it is urgent to carry out efficient treatment. Herein, a strategy was proposed to enhance the immobilization and removal of Pb(Ⅱ) (including trace Pb(Ⅱ)) from water by coating SiO 2 on the surface of CaCO 3 to prepare CaCO 3 @SiO 2 composites using the carbonation method. The findings revealed that SiO 2 coating exhibits strong activation effects on CaCO 3 . The SiO 2 coating (loaded at 8.62 wt%) increased CaCO 3 specific surface area by over 20-fold, confirming its activating effect. The maximum immobilization amount of Pb(Ⅱ) by CaCO 3 @SiO 2 reached 3354 mg/g (over twice that of CaCO 3 ), and the removal rate of trace Pb(Ⅱ) (100 μg/L) was 99.5 %. The residual Pb(Ⅱ) concentration (5.5 μg/L) complies with WHO drinking water standard. Furthermore, CaCO 3 @SiO 2 showed selective removal of Pb(II), maintaining an 87 % percentage removal after 5 cycles of recycling. This study quantified dual mechanisms: surface adsorption-complexation dominated at low concentrations (100 % at 10 mg/L), while dissolution-precipitation plays the primary role at high concentrations (99.39 % at 500 mg/L), the removal mechanism of CaCO 3 @SiO 2 was greatly affected by the initial concentration of Pb(Ⅱ), therefore, the accurate contribution rate of each mechanism at different concentrations was calculated. The synergistic effect of CaCO 3 , its surface coated SiO 2, and the rate of increase in the system pH value was found to be the fundamental reason for the significant increase in the immobilization of Pb(Ⅱ) by CaCO 3 @SiO 2 .

The reinforcement mechanism of modified sepiolite (Sepiolite-MgSiO 3 -CaCO 3 ) in copper-based composites under dual-path loading conditions was investigated. Results demonstrate that the composite exhibits optimal comprehensive performance at 20 % sepiolite content, with relatively moderate degradation in mechanical and thermal properties. In sliding friction tests, each 10 % increase in sepiolite content raises the friction coefficient by 4.1 %, 2.9 %, and 5.7 %, respectively, while also accelerating wear, as evidenced by expanded wear tracks and a transition in debris morphology from flocculent to laminated structures. Braking tests reveal that increasing the speed from 1500 to 6000 rpm at intervals of 1500 rpm, the fluctuation ranges of the average friction coefficient are 12 %, 6 %, and −16 %, respectively, with the friction stability coefficient following a similar trend, though the wear rate remains consistently low. The three components in modified sepiolite demonstrate synergistic anti-wear mechanisms: sepiolite forms a film-like structure through fragmentation, smoothing, and aggregation, while MgSiO 3 and CaCO 3 enhance wear resistance by plowing effects, collectively promoting a transition in the dominant wear mechanism from abrasive to adhesive wear.

The modification with dark metallic oxide is identified as the crucial strategy to enhance optical absorptions of calcium-based materials for the direct solar-driven thermochemical energy storage. The effect of modification on the heat release behavior in carbonation of calcium-based material has been widely investigated, but its effect on the heat storage behavior in calcination is lacking of sufficient research, typically for low-cost calcium resource such as carbide slag. The Fe-modified and Mn-modified carbide slags for CaCO 3 /CaO heat storage were synthesized and their optimum decomposition temperatures, effective heat storage conversions, heat flows and heat storage rates in endothermic stage were investigated. Although the Fe modification exacerbates the CaO sintering due to the formation of Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 , that is still effective in reducing the regeneration temperature of CaO in CaCO 3 /CaO cycles. The Mn modification enhances significantly sintering resistance by forming the CaMnO 3 and its transformation into Ca 2 MnO 4 . The effective heat storage conversion of Mn-modified carbide slag after 30 cycles is 3.2 times as high as that of untreated carbide slag. Mn-modified carbide slag exhibits the lowest regeneration temperature and the highest heat storage rate after cycles. The loose and stable porous structure of Mn-modified carbide slag contributes to its superior endothermic performance. Therefore, Mn-modified carbide slag seems to be the potential candidate for calcium looping thermochemical heat storage.

This study presents a novel technique for the controllable preparation of aragonite CaCO3 whiskers using a microdispersion process. Calcium dodecyl benzenesulfonate [Ca(Ar–SO3)2] was first used as an additive for controlling the crystalline form. A homogeneous concentration distribution in the system was achieved due to the efficient micromixing. The effects of various operation parameters on the whiskers were determined, and the reaction conditions were optimized. The mechanism of the additive was discussed. The dynamic adsorption of Ca(Ar–SO3)2 on the surface of whiskers was experimentally demonstrated to be in charge of maintaining the one-dimensional growth and the high purity of the crystals. Aragonite CaCO3 with a crystalline purity of 98–99.5% was controllably synthesized at room temperature. The whiskers were approximately 27 μm in length and had an aspect ratio of about 58.

Electrosorption is considered a promising technology to remove charged pollutants in an efficient and green way, wherein the electrode materials are crucial for achieving its high performance. In this study, a Zr-containing hierarchically porous carbon electrode (ZHPC-1-Ca) tailored for phosphate removal was synthesized based on alginate-like exopolysaccharides (ALE), a biomass extract of excess sludge. The gel-forming ability of ALE provided a basis for obtaining a conductive carbon matrix with well-dispersed metal active sites, and the pore structure of ALE-derived electrodes was simply regulated via a dual-crosslinking strategy. In the synthesis, CaCO 3 acted as both the hard template and the crosslinker, while Zr facilitated pore formation during the secondary crosslinking process. ZHPC-1-Ca exhibited a maximum electrosorption capacity of 12.40 mg g −1 at 1.2 V, with a low energy consumption of 3.166 kWh kg −1 -P. The electrosorption behavior was well fitted with the pseudo-first-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, ZHPC-1-Ca maintained stable electrosorption performance under pH 4–10 and during twenty capture-release cycles (85.2%). The electrosorption mechanisms were primarily elucidated as electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, and Lewis acid-base interaction, contributing to the enhanced and selective phosphate removal. This study achieves a simple and controllable synthesis of hierarchically porous carbon electrodes using sludge biopolymers, which extends the application of sludge-derived carbon in phosphate electrosorption.

In this study, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) coated nanoscale zero-valent iron (referred to as C-nZVI) was successfully synthesized and used for the removal of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution. The obtained C-nZVI particles were observed to be chain-like structure of spherical particles with a smooth surface by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The magnetic hysteresis loop manifested that C-nZVI (CaCO 3 /Fe = 1:4, mass ratio) was ferromagnetic and the saturation magnetization (Ms) was 115.48 emu/g, revealing that C-nZVI had favorable properties of separation, recovery and reuse. Regarding the Cr(VI) removal, no positive correlation between the removal efficiencies and CaCO 3 /Fe mass ratio increasing from CaCO 3 /Fe = 0.5:4 to 4:4. Meanwhile, complete removal of Cr(VI) was observed at initial pH = 3.0 and initial Cr(VI) concentration of 5 mg/L, and the removal efficiency gradually decreased with increasing the initial pH and initial Cr(VI) concentration. The water chemistry had a more or less influence on the reactivity of C-nZVI. Specifically, the presence of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ facilitated the Cr(VI) removal by C-nZVI, but the PO 4 3− and humic acid (HA) impeded the reactivity of C-nZVI. NO 3 − is generally considered to have an adverse influence on nZVI, but it displayed a positive effect on C-nZVI, which should be ascribed to the promotion of C-nZVI corrosion. Additionally, C-nZVI aged for 2 d and 30 d in air had a similar removal efficiency (83.2% and 82.6%) of Cr(VI) as fresh C-nZVI (85%), whereas the Cr(VI) removal efficiency by C-nZVI aged for the same aging times in aqueous solution were approximate 65.9% and 46.6%, respectively.

Summary Incorporating graphite/graphene into a Mg alloy matrix is a promising approach for developing lightweight heat dissipation materials. However, carbon material is inherently incompatible with Mg because of their distinctly different surface characteristics, resulting in the challenge of composite fabricating and interface controlling. Herein, a new strategy of in situ interfacial modification was proposed to achieve excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical properties in graphite/Mg composites. A super-nano CaCO 3 interfacial layer was reported in this paper. The detailed interfacial structure, reaction thermodynamics and kinetics, and interface strengthening mechanisms were analyzed and discussed. Several preferential epitaxial relationships of the Mg/CaCO 3 interface were revealed, which are conducive to minimize the interfacial energy, stabilize and strengthen the interface. Moreover, strong ionic bond of graphite/CaCO 3 interface was demonstrated. The strong chemical interface bonding of graphite-Mg via in situ interface modification facilitates both the interfacial cohesion and interfacial thermal conduction, which endows the graphite/Mg composites with superior strength–thermal conductivity synergy.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a widely used inorganic filling pigment used in coatings, and it is known for its nontoxicity, odorlessness, and environmental friendliness. The application of CaCO3as a filler can effectively reduce raw material costs, and optimization of the filler formula enhances the coating film performance. In this study, oak planks were prepared as substrates for water-based inkjet printing. Three composite water-based primers with different TiO2-to-CaCO3ratios and a polyurethane resin primer were used to prepare the substrate for the printing surface. The properties of the water-based primer coating and the water-based inkjet printing coating were characterized and analyzed via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, video-based contact angle analysis, and environmental scanning electron microscopy. The aim was to investigate the effects of the composite waterborne primer coatings on the ink absorption and coloring properties of the interface between wood substrates and waterborne inkjet coatings. Sample WDCC-3#, with a TiO2-to-CaCO3ratio of 15:35, exhibited the most comprehensive characteristics. The wood surface coated with 15 g/m2of the polyurethane resin primer and 15 g/m2of WDCC-3#exhibited a 5.8° contact angle of the water-based ink, first-grade adhesion, 4 H hardness, 70.52 whiteness value, and a roughness of ~2.33. The surface of the printed water-based inkjet-coated substrate was uniform and smooth, featuring rounded and transparent edges of the water-based ink droplets and a small CMYK color difference value. Therefore, the composite waterborne primer, incorporating TiO2and CaCO3in specific ratios, can be effectively combined with waterborne polyurethane primer coatings. This combination significantly improves the interfacial compatibility between the oak surface and waterborne inkjet coatings, leading to enhanced ink absorption on the oak plank surface during printing. This results in a high degree of color reproduction and clearer printed images. Overall, this study provides valuable insights for the development of primer programs for the industrial application of waterborne digital inkjet technology on wood products. Keywords:waterborne primer;calcium carbonate;water-based ink;oak plank;inkjet printing technology

A superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic CaCO 3 @PDA@nylon nanocomposite membrane was prepared by a simple dip-coating method using a nylon 66 membrane in dopamine and nano CaCO 3 particle aqueous solutions. The prepared CaCO 3 @PDA@nylon membrane was characterized by SEM, EDS , FTIR, and XPS . The underwater oil contact angle reached 159.7°. The modified membrane showed highly efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation performance for various viscous oils or organic solvents over a wide range from 126.8 to 6029.6 nm. Furthermore, the CaCO 3 @PDA@nylon membrane also demonstrated high permeation flux and good regeneration ability. Even with continuous reuse of 15 cycles, the flux was still high, e.g., 517.3 L m −2 h −1 for chloroform-in-water emulsions with an average particle size of 126.8 nm. The modified membrane's possible oil-in-water emulsion separation mechanism was obtained by combining fluorescence-assisted dripping, continuous filtration, and emulsion contact angle experiments. This work might provide a simple and environmentally friendly membrane modification method for general separation studies of high oil concentration oil-in-water emulsions. The simple preparation process and efficient and fast separation ability highlight its great potential in large-scale production and oily wastewater treatment .

Free radical polymerization was selected to obtain a promising copolymer scale inhibitor IA-AM-SAS with good water solubility and temperature and salt resistance, which is suitable for the treatment of surface pipeline water in oil fields, using itaconic acid (IA), acrylamide (AM), and sodium acrylsulfonate (SAS) as the monomers. The structure of the synthesized copolymer was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric results showed that the copolymer does not undergo significant thermal degradation at temperatures below 356°C, indicating that the copolymer has good thermal stability. The molecular weights of the polymers at different monomer ratios were measured using gel permeation chromatography and the relationship between the molecular weights and scale inhibition performance was discussed. The results showed that the scale inhibition effect was best when the monomer molar ratio n(IA): n(AM): n(SAS) was 0.5:2:1.5 and the number of average molecular weight of the prepared copolymer was 7712 g/mol, and the inhibition efficiency of CaCO 3 was 84.02% when IA-AM-SAS was at a concentration of 30 mg L −1 , and the inhibition rate was measured by the standard of static scale inhibition test in the oilfield measured. The range of conditions (PH, Ca 2+ concentration, water temperature, and time) of the static scale inhibition test was then expanded using a one-way controlled variable experiment to explore the performance of IA-AM-SAS scale inhibitors under different water quality conditions. The scale inhibition mechanism was explored by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Briefly, the combination of multiple functional groups enables IA-AM-SAS to be applied in complex and challenging environments.

Introduction Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has potential clinical applications for cancer therapy, and is yet restricted by complex tumor microenvironmental (TME) factors. Thus, the research problem of TME modulation as well as efficient tumor treatment still needs to be clarified. Method In this study, a calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) nanoplatform was designed for ultrasound (US) and TME response-triggered, which encapsulated Ag 2 S and loaded with l -Arg, and further wrapped with RBC/Platelet membrane, named as QD@Ca/M L-Arg . Results Non-invasive US-triggered SDT by Ag 2 S and acidic environment-responsive drug release were achieved. In vitro experiments validated the efficacy of SDT, Ca-ion interference and nitric oxide (NO) gas therapy as combined therapy for cancer treatment. By means of RNA sequencing, the cancer therapeutic mechanism of SDT in redox-related pathways was elucidated. The immunosuppressive TME was simulated with a M2-macrophage/cancer cell co-culture system to confirm the immune activating effect of immunogenic cell death (ICD). Conclusion Accordingly, the potential of QD@Ca/M L- Arg- was demonstrated for in vitro TME modulation, cancer therapeutic efficacy and clinical translation.

CaCO3 nanoparticles are very suitable as intelligent carriers because of their ideal biocompatibility and biodegradability, especially their sensitivity to pH. In this paper, we use mesoporous CaCO3 nanoparticles as intelligent carrier, sodium alginate, and chitosan as alternating assembly materials, folic acid as target molecules, and exploit layer-by-layer assembly technology to achieve sensitive molecular targeting and pH response drug release. Mesoporous CaCO3 hybrid nanoparticles have high drug loading on doxorubicin. The effects of different pH values on drug release in vitro were studied by regulating simulated body fluids with different pH values. The cytotoxicity, targeting effect, and drug release of human cervical cancer cell line (HeLa) were studied by cell vitality and imaging experiments. All the evidence suggests that the smart mesoporous CaCO3 nanoparticles may be a potential clinical application platform for cancer therapy.
