This study used a solvothermal method to prepare chlorella microspheres (ZCS-Ch) loaded with carbon-hybridized, nitrogen-oxygen-doped Zn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (ZCS) nanoparticles, employing Chlorella (Ch) as a biological template. The catalyst's morphology and structure were characterized using XRD, SEM, and XPS. Under simulated visible light, the catalyst effectively degraded Norfloxacin (NOR). Experimental results show that the photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposite is greatly enhanced. ZCS-Ch8 achieved a 92.3% NOR degradation rate within 1 h, with a degradation rate of 0.04198 min-1, which is 1.6 and 15.6 times higher than ZCS (0.02963 min −1 ) and Ch (0.00269 min −1 ) respectively. The increased photocatalytic activity was examined through photoelectrochemical characterization. The addition of Ch effectively promoted charge transfer of photogenerated carriers and reduced their recombination. Finally, radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques confirmed that superoxide radical (·O 2 - ) is the main active species. Additionally, the catalyst showed excellent cycling stability over five consecutive degradation tests.

CA modulates structures and properties of CPPH via non-covalent binding. • AOPs reveal key electron/H-donating sites underlying complex reactivity. • SAR of AOPs-CA explains assay-dependent synergy patterns in ABTS/DPPH/FRAP. • Quantum parameters link weak binding to reactivity enhancement. • PLR-CA shows potential synergistic cytoprotection in HepG2 cells. Non-covalent complexation with chlorogenic acid (CA) was investigated to remodel complex-level structure-activity relationships of antioxidant peptides (AOPs) from Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein hydrolysates (CPPH) and to evaluate their potential cytoprotective interaction. CPPH-CA complex formation and conformational/microenvironmental changes were characterized by FTIR, intrinsic fluorescence, UV–vis, and interfacial/colloidal measurements. Antioxidant activity and synergy of CPPH-CA and peptide-CA systems were quantified using ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP assays. Representative AOPs were identified by LC-MS/MS and in silico screening, synthesized, and analyzed by quantum chemical parameters (HOMO/LUMO, ESP, ALIE, Fukui functions and IGMH). CA associated with AOPs mainly through hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces, inducing charge redistribution and decreased HOMO-LUMO gaps, consistent with enhanced reactivity and synergy. In H 2 O 2 -injured HepG2 cells, PLR-CA exhibited a potential cytoprotective effect under the tested conditions by improving cell viability, reducing lipid peroxidation, and restoring antioxidant enzyme activities.

Microalgae-mediated biodegradation of antibiotics has attracted increasing interest. However, the exact degradation mechanism behind it remains elusive, which is crucial for improving its efficiency and large-scale implementation. Therefore, this study aims to thoroughly investigate how Chlorella sorokiniana ( C.sorokiniana ) degrades ciprofloxacin (CIP) from the molecular level to elucidate its complicated degradation mechanism. Results show that C.sorokiniana exhibited an impressive removal rate of 38.05–74.29 % for CIP, the synergistic effect of biosorption and biodegradation was the main removal mechanism of CIP. The content of EPS increased by 11.84–103.31 %, acting as a carrier to increase the bioavailability of CIP. Enzyme activity analysis identified POD, CYP450, and GST as the major catalytic enzymes responsible for the biotransformation process of CIP with increases of 6–41.2 %, 18.78–102.1 % and 3.53–58.15 %, respectively. Molecular docking further revealed that the binding affinity of 146.24 μM, 27.71 μM and 16.33 μM was observed for POD,CYP450, and GST, respectively, indicating the high metabolic efficiency of CIP by CYP450. Finally, DFT calculations elucidated the enzyme-mediated biodegradation pathway of CIP, including hydroxylation, decarboxylation, and ring opening. These findings are expected to further fill the knowledge gap on the catalysis mechanism of CIP degradation by enzymes and improve the practical application of microalgae to antibiotic wastewater.

Developing a rapid, low-cost, and multimode detection method for heavy metal ions remains a compelling goal for many applications, including food safety, environmental and biological analysis. This study investigated the influence of Hg2+ on the peroxidase-like activity of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) decorated on carbon dots (CDs) from lysine (denoted as GNP@CDs). A new type of Hg2+-triggered peroxidase-like activity of GNP@CDs was discovered, which could catalyze the oxidation of the colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue TMB. Based on the regulation of the catalytically triggered activity, a sensitive colorimetric method for the detection of Hg2+ was developed, with a linear range of 7–150 nM, providing a limit of detection as low as 3.7 nM. The sensor is simple and rapid, and was successfully applied to the detection of Hg2+ enrichment in chlorella, suggesting a promising application in biological analysis.

To enhance the stability of membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) and accelerate the formation of biofilm, this study introduced a symbiotic system composed of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) bacteria and Chlorella into the MABR, and compared it with a control system inoculated with HN-AD bacteria and activated sludge. The effects of adding 0.8 μM exogenous C8-HSL on biofilm formation and the efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus removal were investigated by comparing systems with and without the signaling molecule. Results showed that 0.8 μM C8-HSL enhanced the removal efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) by 25.17 %, 36.22 %, and 38.74 %, respectively, and increased extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production by 68.62 %. High-throughput sequencing identified Desulfomicrobium and Aliidiomarina as the dominant microorganisms involved in nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The nirB gene played a key role in the denitrification process, and phoBR gene was essential for phosphorus removal. This study provides theoretical support for the application of quorum sensing in MABR systems, offering a novel strategy to improve the efficiency and stability of high ammonia wastewater treatment.

Nitrogen-doped biochar has been proven to be an advantageous peroxodisulfate (PDS) activator. However, few studies on PDS activation by biochar prepared from biomass containing intrinsic nitrogen have been reported, and the performance and mechanism are still unclear. In this study, nitrogen self-doped Chlorella biochar (NCB) was prepared by pyrolysis . The results showed that the increase of pyrolysis temperature promoted the formation of graphitic structure in NCB, and the biochar prepared at 900 °C (NCB-900) had the best performance in activating PDS for sulfamethazine (SMZ) degradation. The NCB-900/PDS system had a wide pH applicability and excellent resistance to anion interference, as well as excellent performance in applications such as groundwater remediation . It was suggested that the graphitic nitrogen structures were the main active sites, and the sp 2 -hybridized graphitic carbon network was favorable for surface electron transfer in the redox reactions on the NCB-900 surface. The degradation mechanism was thoroughly investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test, quenching experiments, chemical probes, electrochemical measurements, and in situ Raman analysis. Rather than free radicals and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), surface electron transfer mediated by the NCB-900–PDS* complex dominated SMZ degradation in the NCB-900/PDS system.

Microalgal biotransformation plays an important role in determining the environmental fate of trace antibiotics. However, the role of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) in regulating algal stress responses and antibiotic biotransformation remains poorly understood. In this study, PS-MPs and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) were selected as representative pollutants to investigate the toxic effects, defense responses, and SMX degradation mechanism of typical microalgae, i.e.,Chlorella sorokiniana, under single- and combined exposure conditions (PS-MPs: 10 mg/L; SMX: 0.5 and 5 mg/L) over 8 days. The results showed that co-exposure significantly alleviated growth inhibition, photosynthesis inhibition, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. Meanwhile, antioxidant enzyme activities decreased, whereas extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion increased markedly, with the highest exopolysaccharide content reaching 83.22 ± 0.13 mg/L in the PS-MPs + 5 mg/L SMX group. Compared with the 5 mg/L SMX group, the biodegradation ratio and total removal ratio of SMX in the PS-MPs + 5 mg/L SMX group increased from 28.90% to 39.50% and from 40.90% to 50.50%, respectively. The relevant research proved that high EPS secretions facilitated SMX degradation and consequently reduced biotoxicity. Moreover, eleven degradation products and three potential transformation pathways were identified during the incubation. During the co-exposure of SMX and PS-MPs, most metabolites exhibited lower toxicity and bioaccumulation potential than SMX, indicating reduced ecological risk in the presence of PS-MPs. These findings provide new insight into the fate of antibiotics in microplastic-contaminated aquatic systems.

Biofilm attached cultivation is a promising method for efficient production of microalgae. Determining the surface property index to select an appropriate substrate benefiting the algae adhesion and biofilm formation is very important for the cultivation method. This work focused on elucidating and quantifying the influence of surface wettability and roughness of substrate on Chlorella vulgaris adhesion. Firstly, surface modified styrene-acrylic (SA) resin films by adding different dosage of perfluoroalkyl ethyl acrylate (FM) were prepared. Property characterization shows that the surface contact angle in water, formamide and diiodomethane of FM modified SA films is significantly associated with the FM dosage, while the other surface properties including zeta potential, surface potential and surface roughness have insignificant difference. The calculated surface free energy parameters show that the SA films belong to the non-polar substrata. A well quantitative correlation that the adhesion capacity of C. vulgaris linearly declines with the increase of water contact angle was obtained. And a near linear relationship between the adhesion capacity and the surface free energy (γ), or the cohesion free energy ( Δ G c o h ) was also observed. Secondly, the surface roughness solely changed SA films were prepared by replicating the morphology of stainless steel sieves through the PDMS template method. The patterned SA films have alternately arranged rectangular “valleys” and “ridges”. A well linear correlation between the microalgae adhesion capacity and the surface roughness was also obtained.

Extensive application of nanomaterials enlarges its concentrations in the aquatic environments and poses a threat to algae. This study comprehensively analyzed the physiological and transcriptional responses of Chlorella sp. after being exposed to chromium (III) oxide nanoparticles (nCr 2 O 3 ). The nCr 2 O 3 at 0–100 mg/L presented adverse effects on cell growth (96 h EC 50 = 16.3 mg/L), decreasing the photosynthetic pigment concentrations and photosynthetic activity. Moreover, more extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), especially polysaccharides in soluble EPS, were produced in algae cell, which mitigated the damage of nCr 2 O 3 to cells. However, with the increase of nCr 2 O 3 doses, the EPS protective responses were exhausted, accompanied by toxicity in the form of organelle damage and metabolic disturbance. The enhanced acute toxicity was closely related to the physical contact of nCr 2 O 3 with cells, oxidative stress, and genotoxicity. Firstly, large amounts of nCr 2 O 3 aggregated around and were attached to cells, causing physical damage. Then, the intracellular reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde levels were significantly increased that led to lipid peroxidation, especially at 50–100 mg/L nCr 2 O 3 . Finally, the transcriptomic analysis further revealed that the transcription of ribosome, glutamine, and thiamine metabolism-related genes were impaired under 20 mg/L nCr 2 O 3 , suggesting nCr 2 O 3 inhibited algal cell growth through metabolism, cell defense, and repair, etc. Graphical Abstract

This study aims to assess the toxicity of the commonly-spread titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) by evaluating the exposure impact of the particles on both freshwater algae Chlorella pyrenoidosa and zebrafish liver cell line (ZFL), the two common in vitro models in toxicological studies. To compare the toxic effects of TiO 2 NPs with different physiochemical properties, three types of manufactured TiO 2 were used: bulk TiO 2 , Degussa P25 TiO 2 , and ultrafine TiO 2 NPs. Both short and long-term biological responses of green algae, such as the effect on the cell growth rate, pigment autofluorescence, and esterase activity were investigated. The dosage, physical property of TiO 2 particles, and their interactions with algal cells affect cellular growth, especially after short-term exposure. The hydrodynamic size plays a critical role in determining the acute toxicity to C. pyrenoidosa in terms of autofluorescence and esterase activity, while all types of TiO 2 NPs show toxic effects after exposure for 14 days. However, this observation is not seen when studying the effect of introduced particles in ZFL, for the precipitated Degussa P25 TiO 2 showed the highest cellular inhibition. Interestingly, despite the obvious overall toxicity toward C. pyrenoidosa , the photocatalytical properties of TiO 2 NPs may contribute to the enhanced photosynthesis in the low concentration range (< 40 µg mL −1 ). Overall, we found that the physical interactions between TiO 2 particles and the cells, particles’ size and dispersibility play critical role in the cytotoxic effect for both algal and ZFL cells, while the photocatalytical properties of TiO 2 particles may produce mixed effects on the cytotoxicity of green algae.

A highly tolerant Chlorella sp. achieved efficient lambda-cyhalothrin transformation. • Multi-omics revealed coordinated detoxification and metabolic remodeling. • Intracellular–extracellular remodeling drove adaptive LC responses. • XDA-R55 treatment reduced lambda-cyhalothrin-induced oxidative stress and toxicity. • Mechanisms underlying microalgal pesticide adaptation were elucidated. Lambda-cyhalothrin (LC), a widely used pyrethroid insecticide, poses persistent ecological risks due to its toxicity and environmental persistence. In this study, a microalga strain, Chlorella sp. XDA-R55, was investigated as a potential biological platform for LC-contaminated water remediation. XDA-R55 maintained active growth under 20 mg/L LC exposure and promoted 96.6% LC removal within 6 days without external carbon supplementation. Physiological analyses revealed that XDA-R55 alleviated LC-induced oxidative stress by enhancing antioxidant defense systems and maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses indicated that XDA-R55 facilitates the detoxification and transformation of LC by upregulating genes associated with glutathione metabolism, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and ABC transporters. Several putative transformation products, such as 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, were identified and exhibited transient accumulation followed by decline. Ecological safety assessments demonstrated that water treated with XDA-R55 significantly alleviated oxidative stress, metabolic disturbances, and immune suppression in zebrafish, with most biomarkers recovering to levels comparable to those in the control group. Moreover, as a photoautotrophic organism, XDA-R55 facilitated LC removal and transformation without external carbon supplementation, providing a sustainable and environmentally compatible strategy for pesticide-contaminated water remediation. These findings provide mechanistic insights into microalgal adaptation and LC transformation under pesticide stress, and highlight the potential of Chlorella sp. XDA-R55 for mitigating the ecological risks associated with LC-contaminated water. Download: Download high-res image (189KB) Download: Download full-size image

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) offers an efficient solution for low-carbon sewage treatment by eliminating challenging sludge-water separation processes. However, the impact of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)-enveloped micro-environments on microalgae and the role of microalgae-derived phytohormones in bacterial signaling in MBGS remain poorly understood. This study investigated the characteristics of Chlorella vulgaris within an EPS-enveloped micro-environment using bio-entrapment in natural polysaccharide-protein (PS-PN) hydrogel granules. Results showed that PS-PN hydrogel bio-entrapment facilitates microalgal cell aggregation and proliferation, and upregulated pathways for photosynthesis, carbon metabolism, and antioxidant defense, suggesting that aggregated growth in PS-PN granules enhanced carbon fixation, organic metabolism, and environmental adaptation. In addition, tryptophan in the hydrogel activated the tryptamine pathway of C. vulgaris , increasing indoleacetic acid (IAA) production to 212.88 ± 7.86 μg/L (vs. 1.95 ± 0.10 μg/L in suspended cells). This IAA alleviated Pseudomonas stutzeri growth inhibition under sulfamethoxazole (SMX) stress. The microalgae-bacteria symbiotic system seeded with aggregated-growth microalgae exhibited superior growth and antioxidant enzyme activity under SMX stress. This study highlights the advantages of aggregated-growth microalgae in supporting both their survival and that of symbiotic bacteria under antibiotic stress, and provides new insights into the role of microalgae-derived phytohormones in microalgae-bacteria signaling and stress resistance within MBGS.
