Magnetism evolution in Ni-doped Co3O4

Xiaobo Wang,Congmian Zhen,Jiaxuan Feng,Xiaoxu Zhang,Lu Liu,Li Ma,Guoke Li,Dewei Zhao,Denglu Hou

Pure phase Ni-doped Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles (Ni x Co 3-x O 4 , 0≤x ≤ 1) were prepared using a hydrothermal method . At low doping concentrations, Ni preferentially enters the octahedral sites to replace the non-magnetic Co 3+ , and a new superexchange interaction is created between tetrahedral Co 2+ and octahedral Ni 3+ . A spin glass state was observed. The magnetic transition temperature of the Ni x Co 3-x O 4 powders significantly increases from 36 K to 236 K, and the saturation magnetization increases to 2.239 μ B /f.u. As the Ni content continues to increase, and Ni ions unexpectedly enter tetrahedral sites and new superexchange interactions are emerged. However, the superexchange interaction between tetrahedral Ni 2+ and octahedral Ni 3+ is weaker than that between tetrahedral Co 2+ and octahedral Ni 3+ . Meanwhile, tetrahedral Ni 2+ makes octahedral Co 3+ transform from low spin to high spin, resulting in a decrease in the total magnetization of the sample.

Secondary wastewater treatment using peroxymonosulfate activated by a carbon nanofiber supported Co3O4 (Co3O4@CNF) catalyst combined with ultrafiltration

Qingshui Fan,Xiaoxiang Cheng,Xuewu Zhu,Congwei Luo,Huixue Ren,Daoji Wu,Heng Liang

In this study, a heterogeneous carbon nanofiber supported Co 3 O 4 (Co 3 O 4 @CNF) catalyst was prepared, and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation activated by Co 3 O 4 @CNF integrated with ultrafiltration (UF) membranes was proposed for treating secondary wastewater. The micromorphology and chemical composition of Co 3 O 4 @CNF were characterized by various techniques, demonstrating the successful synthesis of Co 3 O 4 @CNF. The prepared catalyst exhibited superior catalytic performance for PMS, accompanied by the formation of various reactive oxygen species, including • OH, SO 4 •− , 1 O 2 and O 2 •− . The Co 3 O 4 @CNF/PMS system substantially enhanced the removal of effluent organic matter (EfOM), and the DOC and UV 254 values were decreased to 3.8 mg/L and 0.032 cm −1 , with removal rates of 46.5% and 58.4%, respectively. The reduction efficiency of various fluorescent components was also improved, while macromolecular and humic substances were significantly reduced, accompanied by the generation of some small molecular organics. For both polyether sulfone and ceramic membranes, the fouling caused by EfOM was effectively mitigated, with the irreversible fouling resistance reduced by 65.6% and 83.9%, individually. The main fouling mechanism was also changed by increasing the specific filtration volume for the formation of cake filtration. The effectiveness of Co 3 O 4 @CNF/PMS for fouling mitigation was verified through the characterization of the surface morphology and functional groups of the membranes. The results suggest that the process of PMS activated by Co 3 O 4 @CNF integrated with UF has an application potential for secondary wastewater treatment.

Folding-fan-like Mn–Co3O4@Mo–Co3O4 core-shell heterostructure with high-valence dual doping for efficient seawater electrolysis

Ting Bian,Jingwen Zhang,Zheng Yang,Feitao Fan,Liuting Zhang,Shitan Yan,Petr Senin,Jie Yu

Designing affordable electrocatalysts that accelerate the oxygen evolution reaction and resist chloride corrosion is key for practical seawater electrolysis. A fan-like Mn–Co 3 O 4 @Mo–Co 3 O 4 core–shell heterostructure was synthesized, where vertically aligned Mn-doped Co 3 O 4 nanowires serve as structural ribs and conformal Mo-doped Co 3 O 4 nanosheets form the fan surface. Dual Mn/Mo doping creates oxygen vacancies and modulates the metal–oxygen electronic structure, boosting intermediate adsorption and OER kinetics, while the nanosheet–nanowire framework maximizes active sites and facilitates charge and mass transport. As a result, the catalyst delivers an overpotential of 220 mV at 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, outperforming other reference samples. In alkaline seawater, it maintains overpotentials of 252 and 289 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm −2 and exhibits negligible degradation over 120 h with nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency. These results demonstrate that synergistic electronic tuning and nano-architectural design enable robust electrocatalysts for efficient seawater electrolysis.

C/Co3O4/Diatomite Composite for Microwave Absorption

Yan Liao,Dashuang Wang,Wenrui Zhu,Zhilan Du,Fanbo Gong,Tuo Ping,Jinsong Rao,Yuxin Zhang,Xiaoying Liu

Transition metal oxides have been widely used in microwave-absorbing materials, but how to improve impedance matching is still an urgent problem. Therefore, we introduced urea as a polymer carbon source into a three-dimensional porous structure modified by Co3O4nanoparticles and explored the influence of different heat treatment temperatures on the wave absorption properties of the composite. The nanomaterials, when calcined at a temperature of 450 °C, exhibited excellent microwave absorption capabilities. Specifically, at an optimized thickness of 9 mm, they achieved a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −97.3 dB, accompanied by an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 9.83 GHz that comprehensively covered both the S and Ku frequency bands. On the other hand, with a thickness of 3 mm, the RLminwas recorded as −17.9 dB, with an EAB of 5.53 GHz. This excellent performance is attributed to the multi-facial polarization and multiple reflections induced by the magnetic loss capability of Co3O4nanoparticles, the electrical conductivity of C, and the unique three-dimensional structure of diatomite. For the future development of bio-based microwave absorption, this work provides a methodology and strategy.

Phase and morphology evolution of high dielectric CoO/Co3O4 particles with Co3O4 nanoneedles on surface for excellent microwave absorption application

XiuBo Xie,Cui Ni,Zihan Lin,Dan Wu,Xueqin Sun,Yuping Zhang,Bing Wang,Wei Du

Novel dual phased CoO/Co 3 O 4 particles with Co 3 O 4 nanoneedles on surface are obtained by annealing dual-phased Co (hexagonal and cubic phases) particles. Their phase and morphology evolution are clarified by XRD, SEM and TEM measurements. The early formed CoO and Co 3 O 4 on surface from dual-phased Co promote the outdiffusion process of inside Co with kirkendall effect and restrict the growth of Co 3 O 4 with a specific orientation, leading to the formation of Co 3 O 4 nanoneedles on the surface. The microwave absorption measurement shows that the CoO/Co 3 O 4 particles with annealing time of 1 h possess higher permittivity and better performances than pure Co and Co 3 O 4 particles. An enhanced reflection loss (RL) value of −38.8 dB is obtained for the CoO/Co 3 O 4 -paraffin wax (PW) composite with a thickness of 2.8 mm. The absorption bandwidth for RL below −10 dB reaches 8.7 GHz. The Co 3 O 4 nanoneedles on surface, porous structure and inner dual phased CoO/Co 3 O 4 bring increased multiple reflection, interface/dipolar polarizations, conductive loss and better impedance matching. This clarification of phase and morphology evolution and novel CoO/Co 3 O 4 material with nanoneedles on surface may provide new routes for designing high performance Co-based microwave absorbers with unique structures.

A robust core-shell silver soot oxidation catalyst driven by Co3O4: Effect of tandem oxygen delivery and Co3O4-CeO2 synergy

Xin Wang,Baofang Jin,Ruixue Feng,Wei Liu,Duan Weng,Xiaodong Wu,Shuang Liu

In this work, tandem oxygen delivery systems were built by coating cube-like Co 3 O 4 with Ag/CeO 2 , which exhibited high soot oxidation activity that overwhelmed the Fe 2 O 3 -based catalysts. The results of TPR and activity tests indicated that a large amount of Co 3 O 4 lattice oxygen could be transferred into O x − with the assistance of Ag/CeO 2 . These active oxygen species accelerated the oxidation of soot and NO at low temperature. Furthermore, the Co 3 O 4 -CeO 2 synergy facilitated Co 3+ → Co 2+ transformation during reactions, resulting in boosted NO conversion and thereby NO 2 -assisted soot combustion at mild and high temperatures. Given the Ag/Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 -type catalysts were low-cost, hydrothermally stable and could be fabricated via co-precipitation methods easily, they were highly promising for application in both gasoline and diesel particulate filters.

Engineering In-Co3O4/H-SSZ-39(OA) Catalyst for CH4-SCR of NOx: Mild Oxalic Acid (OA) Leaching and Co3O4 Modification

Guanyu Chen,Weixin Zhang,Rongshu Zhu,Yanpeng Chen,Minghu Zhao,Mei Hong

Zeolite-based catalysts efficiently catalyze the selective catalytic reduction of NOxwith methane (CH4-SCR) for the environmentally friendly removal of nitrogen oxides, but suffer severe deactivation in high-temperature SO2- and H2O-containing flue gas. In this work, SSZ-39 zeolite (AEI topology) with high hydrothermal stability is reported for preparing CH4-SCR catalysts. Mild acid leaching with oxalic acid (OA) not only modulates the Si/Al ratio of commercial SSZ-39 to a suitable value, but also removes some extra-framework Al atoms, introducing a small number of mesopores into the zeolite that alleviate diffusion limitation. Additional Co3O4modification during indium exchange further enhances the catalytic activity of the resulting In-Co3O4/H-SSZ-39(OA). The optimized sample exhibits remarkable performance in CH4-SCR under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 24,000 h−1and in the presence of 5 vol% H2O. Even under harsh SO2- and H2O-containing high-temperature conditions, it shows satisfactory stability. Catalysts containing Co3O4components demonstrate much higher CH4conversion. The strong mutual interaction between Co3O4and Brønsted acid sites, confirmed by the temperature-programmed desorption of NO (NO-TPD), enables more stable NxOyspecies to be retained in In-Co3O4/H-SSZ-39(OA) to supply further reactions at high temperatures.

Octahedral-coordinated Co3O4 for water electrolysis in acid

Wang Yue,Ji Yujin,Zhou Jing,Chen Jinxin,Li Chenchen,Zhao Chendi,Ke Jia,Xiong Yutian,Pan Sihui,Huang Wei-Hsiang,Pao Chih-Wen,Kuo Chang-Yang,Chen Chien-Te,Li Youyong,Hu Zhiwei,Shao Qi,Huang Xiaoqing

The development of highly active and stable non-noble metal oxide catalysts to replace iridium-based materials for efficient acidic water electrolysis is crucial 1 , 2 , 3 . However, traditional spinel cobalt oxide suffers from intrinsic performance limitations from coexistence of inactive tetrahedral (T d ) and highly active octahedral (O h ) coordination sites 4 , 5 . Here we report a new trigonal-phase Co 3 O 4 (Tri-Co 3 O 4 ) produced by a vacuum-mediated molten-alkali mechanochemical method, which shows edge-shared [CoO 6 ] octahedral coordination with the space group P-3m1 (164). The three-layer compact structure provides Co 2+ and Co 3+ located in octahedral coordination in the ratio 1:2. Tri-Co 3 O 4 achieves a low overpotential of 269 millivolts (mV) at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), 181 mV less than spinel-type Co 3 O 4 . It also achieves a current density exceeding 1,800 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.80 V in proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) devices. The catalytic mechanism shows that the 2D layered structure with edge-shared octahedral coordination can effectively optimize the adsorption of intermediates and reduce the dissolution of Co, thereby substantially improving the activity and stability of the non-noble metal catalysts.

Kinetics of electrophoretic deposition of nano-Co3O4 coating

Zhang Daixiong,Wang Xia,Peng Xiaofei,Wang Qinying,Xiang Qing

Co 3 O 4 with a coating architecture is one of the most promising transition metal oxides because of its wide application in electrochromic device, sensors, heterogeneous catalysts, electrocatalyst, supercapacitors and photocatalyst. In this study, an environment-friendly and cost-effective route for fabricating Co 3 O 4 coating was successfully realized through the aqueous EPD (electrophoretic deposition) method with nitric acid as an additive. The EPD kinetics of Co 3 O 4 with different solid loadings in aqueous dispersion was investigated in detail. It was found that more nitric acid needed for the surface charging of more Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles would also significantly change the EPD condition, such as the electric current passing through the cell and the temperature of the suspension that would lead to a serious stability decrease in the EPD system. As a result, the increase in the deposition rate of the Co 3 O 4 coating would be much lower than that in the solid loading. We also suggested that this conclusion may be noteworthy for aqueous EPD of some other nanoparticle kinds.

Controllable hydrothermal-assisted synthesis of mesoporous Co3O4 nanosheets

Xiulan Hu,Huihong Huang,Jianbo Zhang,Junjun Shi,Shoufeng Zhu,Nan Su

Mesoporous cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanosheets (about 15 nm in thickness and about 1 μm in width) with mostly pore sizes of 10–15 nm were obtained by heat treatment of hydrothermally-synthesized hydrothermal products at 300 °C. The compositions and morphologies of the hydrothermal products could be tailored by controlling the hydrothermal reaction temperature at a range of 120–200 °C and time. Quasi-sheet-like Co(OH)2 is favored to form at 120 °C for 6 h through oriented attachment, and then slice sheets Co(NH3)5(ONO)(NO3)2 and Co(CN)2·H2O were formed at over 150 °C for 6 h in water due to thermodynamic instability. Their sheets become thinner and more decentralized with the extension of the hydrothermal reaction time. The (CH3COO)2Co precursor was hydrothermally synthesized in ethanol. All of hydrothermal products were transformed into porous Co3O4 with similar morphologies after heat treatment. Mesoporous Co3O4 nanosheets displayed a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area of about 65 m2 g−1. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) results indicated mesoporous Co3O4 nanosheets have good electrochemical properties and show a specific capacitance (CS) of 880 F g−1 in 1 M KOH at a current density of 1 A g−1.

Ultrathin Co3O4 Nanomeshes for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Ying Li,Fu-Min Li,Xin-Ying Meng,Shu-Ni Li,Jing-Hui Zeng,Yu Chen

Ultrathin transition-metal-based nanomeshes can perfectly combine the advantages of two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin nanosheets and porous nanostructures, which have wide applications in energy storage and conversion. In this work, we present an etch-free one-step approach to directly synthesize the ultrathin Co3O4 nanomeshes (Co-UNMs) by employing a CoCl2/K3Co(CN)6 cyanogel as the reaction precursor. The 2D planar structural unit and solid properties of the cyanogel result in the preferential assembly of generated crystal nuclei at the solid–liquid interface (i.e., cyanogel–solution interface) in the 2D direction, which plays a key role in the formation of nanomeshes. The as-prepared Co-UNMs with 1.5 nm thickness and abundant pores have high surface area and numerous defect atoms, resulting in enhanced activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, such as a low overpotential of 307 mV at 10 mA cm–2, a small Tafel slope of 76 mV dec–1, and attractive durability in 1 M KOH electrolyte.

Synergy of electrocatalysis on photoelectrocatalysis and amperometric determination of trace glucose

Ruilin Liu,Xiaoping Wei,Jianping Li

An amperometric method with synergistic electrocatalysis on photoelectrocatalysis was proposed, and it was used for the detection of trace glucose concentrations for the first time. Under illumination of an external xenon lamp light source, the electrocatalytic oxidation reaction of glucose on a Co 3 O 4 -modified electrode produced a synergistic effect on the photoelectrochemical reaction of glucose. The separation of electron–hole pairs generated by the photoelectrochemical reaction was promoted, and the photoelectric conversion efficiency was improved. As a result, the photoelectric current increased, and the sensitivity of the amperometric method was enhanced by about 9 times. The mechanism of synergistic electrocatalysis on photoelectrocatalysis was studied. The method can be used for the determination of glucose with a linear concentration range of 1.0 × 10 −8  M to 3.5 × 10 −7  M. The sensitivity was 7,753 μA cm −2 mM −1 , and the detection limit was 3.6 × 10 −9  M. Compared with conventional photoelectrochemical analysis methods, the chronoamperometric method has higher sensitivity and lower detection limit. The method has been used for the direct determination of trace amounts of glucose in saliva and sweat.
