Binder-free hydrogen storage composite Co9S8/rGO: A prospective anode for flexible energy storage device with high energy density

Na Wang,Wenjing Hou,Yunzhen Chang,Hua Song,Honggang Li,Yanping Li,Gaoyi Han

Flexible energy storage devices attracted extensive attention due to their application in personal wearable electronic products. However, the applications of flexible energy storage devices, especially supercapacitors are limited by their low energy density, because anode materials with large capacitance are scarce for the devices based on aqueous electrolyte. Therefore, developing high-performance anode is an effective way to break through the low energy density of flexible devices. Herein, the electroless plating method was used to prepare a flexible cobalt metal substrate based on carbon cloth (CC). The composite of Co 9 S 8 and reduced oxide graphene (rGO/Co 9 S 8 (rGO)/CC) is prepared by one-step hydrothermal method as a flexible anode with outstanding performance. Benefiting from the high hydrogen storage capacity of rGO/Co 9 S 8 (rGO), only a small amount of anode materials are needed to match the capacity of the cathode material of rGO/Ni 3 S 2 (rGO). The optimized flexible device assembled by using rGO/Co 9 S 8 (rGO) as negative electrode and rGO/Ni 3 S 2 (rGO) as positive electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 192.4 mAh g −1 at the current density of 4.0 A g −1 , large energy density (168.1 Wh kg −1 at 3.5 kW kg −1 ). Furthermore, the network structure of the electrode can provide enough space for the expansion and contraction of the electrode materials during the repeated charging and discharging process, so the device exhibits good cycle stability (the capacitance of the device can retain 84.3% after 6000 cycles). Moreover, the device also exhibits remarkable flexibility. These results reveal that this kind of electrochemical hydrogen storage material can be developed as a promising anode in flexible energy storage devices.

In-situ construction of hierarchical structure with 1D MnCo2S4 interpenetrate 3D Co9S8 hollow polyhedrons towards high performance hybrid supercapacitors

Xuan Wei,Hongyue Wu,Linlin Li

Obtaining high-capacity electrode materials is a key problem to be solved for high performance supercapacitors. Metal-organic frameworks derivatives have been considered to be ideal electrodes due to their large specific surface area and pore connectivity. Herein, we design a novel controllable structure, in which MnCo 2 S 4 nanorods with one-dimensional structure are inserted into three-dimensional ZIF-67 derived Co 9 S 8 hollow polyhedrons, the ratio between the two substances can be effectively regulated by controlling the reaction time. Among them, MC-3 sample shows the best performance and its capacity can reach up to 1058.0 F g −1 (146.9 mA h g −1 ) at 1 A g −1 . A supercapacitor constructed by MC-3 as the positive electrode, using activated carbon as the negative electrode, the assembled device shows a high energy density of 35.8 W h kg −1 at 750 W kg −1 . Besides, the supercapacitor also shows a steady cycling capacity of 82.1% retention after 6000 cycles. The excellent performance of the hybrid supercapacitor could envision promising applications in future high-performance energy storage devices.

In-situ MOFs-derived hollow Co9S8 polyhedron welding on the top of MnCo2S4 nanoneedles for high performance hybrid supercapacitors

Hong Jia,Jie Wang,Wenwen Fu,Junhua Hu,Yu Liu

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as the outstanding templates and precursors in synthesizing advanced cathode materials for supercapacitor. Herein, a novel hierarchical structure with hollow Co 9 S 8 polyhedrons welding on the top of MnCo 2 S 4 nanoneedles are rationally designed via a facile in-situ vulcanization approach. The unique morphology can provide more abundant reaction sites and ensure the efficient electron transport. Due to the synergistic effect between MnCo 2 S 4 and Co 9 S 8 , the hybrid electrode delivers a favorable specific capacity of 1100.5 F·g −1 at a current density of 1 A·g −1 in three-electrode system. Furthermore, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor comprising MnCo 2 S 4 /Co 9 S 8 and activated carbon delivers a high energy density up to 45.8 W·h·kg −1 at a power density of 800 W·kg −1 . Moreover, the device holds more than 94.8% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles, demonstrating it could be a potential electroactive material for next-generation high performance energy storage device.

Tao Yu,Yiting Che,Hao Fu,Dingfeng Ma,Wenjia Zhao,Shitan Yan,Ting Bian,Liuting Zhang

The innovative design of highly active and noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is urgently required for the widespread application of Zinc-air batteries (ZABs). This study presents a porous composite, Co 9 S 8 @NSC, which integrates N and S co-doped carbon aerogels with Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles to create ideal ORR electrocatalysts. The porous carbon aerogels posesess a high specific surface area, which offers abundant catalytic sites and efficient channels for the reactants and electrolytes, while maintaining a uniform distribution of nanoparticles during long-term operation. The collaboration of ORR-active Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles and N and S co-doped carbon aerogels significantly improves ORR performance. Co 9 S 8 @NSC demonstrates a competitive ORR activity, including a high half-wave potential (E 1/2 , 0.85 V), fast electron transfer kinetics (Tafel slop, 53.3 mV dec −1 ), and prominent long-term stability. When utilized as an air cathode catalyst in primary Zn-air batteries, the Co 9 S 8 @NSC electrode displays a power density of 150.9 mW cm −2 and a specific capacity of 735 mAh g zn −1 . Overall, this work presents a promising electrocatalyst design for ORR, which could greatly benefit the development of ZABs.

MOF-Derived Urchin-like Co9S8-Ni3S2 Composites on Ni Foam as Efficient Self-Supported Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Yingping Bu,Yawen Zhang,Yingying Liu,Simin Li,Yanlin Zhou,Xuefen Lin,Zicong Dong,Renchun Zhang,Jingchao Zhang,Daojun Zhang

Effective and inexpensive electrocatalysts are significant to improve the performance of oxygen evolution reaction. Facing the bottleneck of slow kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction, it is highly desirable to design the electrocatalyst with high activity, good conductivity, and satisfactory stability. In this work, nickel foam supported hierarchical Co9S8–Ni3S2composite hollow microspheres were derived from in situ-generative MOF precursors and the subsequent sulfurization process by a simple two-step solvothermal method. The composite microspheres were directly grown on nickel foam without any binder, and nickel foam was used as the nickel source and support material. The morphology and constitution of the series self-supported electrodes were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and Raman, respectively. The unique porous architecture enriched the electrode with sufficient active surface and helped to reactants and bubble evolved during electrochemical water oxidation. Through tuning the concentration of cobalt source and ligand, the content ratio of Co9S8and Ni3S2can be modulated. The heterostructures not only afford active interfaces between the phases but also allow electronic transfer between Co9S8and Ni3S2. The optimized Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF-0.6 electrode with the highest electrochemical surface area and conductivity shows the best OER performance among the series electrodes in 1 M KOH solution. The overpotential of Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF-0.6 is only 233 mV when the current density is 10 mA cm−2, and corresponding Tafel slope is 116.75 mV dec−1. In addition, the current density of Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF-0.6 electrocatalyst hardly decreased during the 12 h stability measurement. Our approach in this work may provide the future rational design and synthesis of satisfactory OER electrocatalysts.

Metal–Organic Frameworks-Derived FeS–Co9S8/NCA Porous Aerogel Electrocatalyst as a High-Performance Cathode for Zinc–Air Batteries

Yunong Qin,Wanzhihan Zhang,Rui Wang,Ling Li,Xiaohui Zhao,Wenming Zhang

Herein, a novel strategy to establish a porous FeS–Co9S8/carbon aerogel (FeS–Co9S8/NCA) electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is fabricated via applying a green biomass carrageenan sulfuration method to CoFe–metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The FeS–Co9S8/NCA exhibits optimized catalytic activity toward the OER with a lower overpotential of 322 mV, which is overmatched to the majority of transition metal sulfides (TMSs), as well as lifted long-term durability without evident variation in the LSV curves after 3000 cycles. Rechargeable liquid zinc–air battery (ZAB) assembled with FeS–Co9S8/NCA as the OER catalyst indicated a maximum power density of 176 mW cm–2 and superior cycling stability without raised polarization even after 48 h, outperforms commercial RuO2-based ZAB. Furthermore, the flexible solid-state ZAB built with FeS–Co9S8/NCA also demonstrated outdistance properties and bendability. The excellent performance stems from the hierarchical porous aerogel structure, which offers a multiscale mass/electron transport channel, together with the interfacial synergy effect between FeS and Co9S8, which serves as the active site of the OER reaction. Thus, this work instituted a novel strategy for obtaining both clean and efficient transition metal sulfide electrocatalysts for the OER reaction and an environmentally friendly biomass material-based sustainable electrocatalyst.

Duplex core-shell Co@Co9S8@NSC nanocrystals for high-performance lithium-sulfur battery through synergistic capture-catalysis-conversion of polysulfide

Xiaoli Peng,Pengfei Wan,Long Yuan,Shilan Li,Shengdong Jing,Fuyu Xiao,Lingxing Zeng,Yaozhu Tian,Zhu Luo,Haosen Fan

The slow redox kinetics and shuttle effect of polysulfides are primary challenges that hinder the further application of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) due to the poor conductivity of sulfur and low sulfur utilization. Separator modification through synergistic capture-catalysis-conversion of polysulfides proves to be an effective approach to address these challenges. In this paper, we successfully design and prepare double shell core-shell Co@Co 9 S 8 @NSC nanocrystals encapsulated in sulfur- and nitrogen-co-doped carbon nanotubes (Co@Co 9 S 8 @NSC) as a separator modifier for LSBs. The modified layer (Co@Co 9 S 8 @NSC//PP) exhibits excellent adsorption-catalytic properties, effectively immobilizing soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and promoting their electrochemical conversion, thereby enhancing lithium ion (Li + ) transport and facilitating a homogeneous lithium deposition process. When we utilize the Co@Co 9 S 8 core-shell structure to coat the polypropylene (PP) separator, the results demonstrate that the modified separator achieves a high reversible capacity of 591 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 C and reaches a reversible capacity of 442 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 2 C, accompanied by a low capacity decay rate of only 0.05 % per cycle. The Li/Li symmetric batteries, which have Co@Co 9 S 8 @NSC-coated separators, exhibit long lifetimes exceeding 800 h at current densities of 2 mA cm −2 and 2 mAh cm −2 , along with a low voltage hysteresis of approximately 55 mV. This provides enhanced lithium stripping/plating stability compared to Li/Li symmetric batteries with pure PP separators. This study presents a novel approach to interlayer construction to achieve high sulfur utilization in long-life LSBs by accelerating the redox kinetics of LiPS and mitigating the shuttle effect.

ZIF-derived “senbei”-like Co9S8/CeO2/Co heterostructural nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries

Yinqing Sun,Yi Guan,Xiaochao Wu,Wanqing Li,Yongliang Li,Lingna Sun,Hongwei Mi,Qianling Zhang,Chuanxin He,Xiangzhong Ren

The rational design and construction of the efficient and robust non-noble metal bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts is of critical significance due to the attention given to reversible metal–air batteries. In this paper, we report novel two-dimensional “senbei”-like Co9S8/CeO2/Co-NC nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (Co9S8/CeO2/Co-NC) derived from a unique 2D Co/Ce bimetallic ZIF. The phase transition from 3D spherical Co-ZIF to 2D Co/Ce-ZIF was achieved through the introduction of Ce ions. Profiting from the successful construction of the unique Co9S8/CeO2 heterostructure and the synergetic effect of two components, the as-prepared Co9S8/CeO2/Co-NC exhibited excellent electro-performance in both the oxygen evolution reaction (Ej=10 = 1.60 V) and oxygen reduction reaction (E1/2 = 0.875 V). Furthermore, when used as a bifunctional air electrode for Zn-air batteries, Co9S8/CeO2/Co-NC reached a high peak power density of ≈164.24 mW cm−2 at a high current density of ≈351 mA cm−2 and displayed an outstanding cycling stability of more than 668 h at 5 mA cm−2. This research provides new guidelines for preparing hybrid materials from cobalt-based sulfide species and CeO2 for electrocatalysis and energy storage or other fields.

One-step in situ growth of Co9S8 on conductive substrate as an efficient counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells

Zheng Linjie,Sun Xiaohua,Chen Linlin,Bao Chao,Luo Weilong,Huang Niu,Sun Panpan,Sun Yihua,Fang Liang,Wang Lei

Cobalt sulfide counter electrodes for the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) were successfully prepared on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates by a facial one-step in situ solvothermal method. The influences of prepared temperature on the synthesized phase, surface morphology, electrocatalytic, and photovoltaic performances of the cobalt sulfide counter electrodes were investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Tafel, and photocurrent density–voltage ( J – V ) measurements. The results indicated that very thin Co 9 S 8 nanoparticle thin films grew on the FTO substrates and the Co 9 S 8 counter electrode prepared at 180 °C showed superior electrocatalytic activity, chemical stability, and photovoltaic performance. The DSSC based on the Co 9 S 8 counter electrode prepared at 180 °C exhibited an efficiency of 6.59 % which was comparable to the solar cell based on the sputtering Pt counter electrode (6.82 %). It indicated that Co 9 S 8 in situ growing on FTO glass substrate at 180 °C is a potential candidate to replace Pt as a low-cost and efficient counter electrode of DSSC.

Tuning the Band Structure of MoS2 via Co9S8@MoS2 Core–Shell Structure to Boost Catalytic Activity for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Boyu Li,Qingmei Su,Lintao Yu,Jun Zhang,Gaohui Du,Dong Wang,Di Han,Miao Zhang,Shukai Ding,Bingshe Xu

The introduction of a dual-functional interlayer into lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) provides many opportunities for restraining the “shuttle effect” and enhancing sluggish sulfur conversion kinetics. Tuning the band structure of the metal sulfide provides an opportunity to enhance its catalytic activity, which plays an important role in suppressing the “shuttle effect” of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in LSBs. Here were present a Co9S8@MoS2 core–shell heterostructure anchored to a carbon nanofiber (Co9S8@MoS2/CNF), developed as an interlayer for suppressing the shuttle effect of LiPSs. The fabricated composite heterostructure is determined to be an effective alternative material that combines the synergistic relationship between chemisorption and electrochemical catalysis. We find that the band structure of the MoS2 shell can be effectively tuned by the Co9S8 core and that the Co9S8@MoS2/CNF can capture the LiPSs, providing excellent catalytic ability to convert LiPSs into Li2S2, with subsequent transformation from Li2S2 to Li2S. Importantly, high capacities of 1002 and 986 mAh g–1 can be retained after 50 cycles with high-sulfur loadings of 6 and 10 mg cm–2. Our results highlight the design of an atomic-scale heterostructure as a multifunctional interlayer providing a synergistic relationship between adsorption and catalysis. The net result is an effective retardation of the shuttling of LiPSs and an enhancement of the electrochemical redox reactions of LiPSs. This work shows great promise toward the development of practical applications of LSBs.

A Nanocomposite of Si@C Nanosphere and Hollow Porous Co9S8/C Polyhedron as High-Performance Anode for Lithium-Ion Battery

Chao Yuan,Dujiang Lu,Yongling An,Xiufang Bian

Graphical Grind and coat : A novel nanocomposite of amorphous carbon-coated Si nanosphere and ZIF-67 derived hollow porous cobalt sulfide/carbon polyhedron is fabricated by a simple grinding process. ZIF-67 derived Co 9 S 8 /C can serve as a buffer to alleviate the volume expansion of Si. The vast conductive carbon layer originated from Co 9 S 8 /C and Si@C plays a key role in facilitating the electron transfer and lithium ion transport kinetics. Si@C−Co 9 S 8 /C anodes deliver improved electrochemical performance. Silicon (Si) is regarded as one of the most promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high capacity and low working voltage. However, dramatic volume expansion and inferior electrical conductivity greatly impede the commercial use of Si anodes. Herein, we design and synthesize a novel nanocomposite of Si nanosphere coated by carbon (Si@C) and hollow porous Co 9 S 8 /C polyhedron (Si@C−Co 9 S 8 /C). The hollow porous Co 9 S 8 /C derived from Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework can serve as a buffering matrix to accommodate the volume expansion of Si, which is beneficial to improve the cycle performance. The vast conductive carbon layer originated from Co 9 S 8 /C and Si@C plays a key role in accelerating the electron transfer and lithium ion transport kinetics, which can significantly enhance the rate performance. As a result, the Si@C−Co 9 S 8 /C anodes deliver stable cycle performance with a reversible capacity of 1399 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles at 100 mA g −1 , improved rate performance and high Coulombic efficiency. This simple route sheds light on designing Si-based composites for LIBs anodes.

Fabrication of highly dispersed ultrafine Co9S8 nanoparticles on carbon nanofibers as low-cost counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells

Ju Qiu,Dayong He,Rui Zhao,Bolun Sun,He Ji,Nan Zhang,Yanzi Li,Xiaofeng Lu,Ce Wang

Platinum is the most commonly used dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) counter electrode (CE) due to its superior electrocatalytic activity and high transparency. However, the scarcity and high-cost of Pt restrict its practical application for the large-scale production of DSSCs. Herein, a facile approach for fabricating highly dispersed Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles with small diameters in the range of 5–10 nm on the surface of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) via an electrospinning followed by calcination and hydrothermal reaction was developed. The composite material could be used as an efficient and low-cost Pt-free CE for DSSCs. The DSSC assembled with the prepared Co 9 S 8 /CNFs composite as a CE exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.37%, which is comparable to that of the DSSC with conventional thermally deposited Pt as the CE (8.50%). Therefore, the Co 9 S 8 /CNFs composite can be used as an efficient and low-cost promising alternative CE in DSSCs.
