In this study, CoFe 2 O 4 –CoFe microspheres were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method and treated in a furnace at a high temperature. The structure and morphology of the CoFe 2 O 4 –CoFe microspheres were well characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with CoFe 2 O 4 –CoFe as an electrochemical sensor exhibited excellent electrochemical activity for the detection of both Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions via differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The related measurement conditions of the proposed electrochemical sensor were optimized by changing the deposition potential, deposition time, and pH value of the electrolyte. Under optimized conditions, the CoFe 2 O 4 –CoFe-based electrochemical sensor exhibited broad linear ranges of 5.0–400 and 5.0–320 μg L −1 with limits of detection (LODs) of 0.50 and 0.26 μg L −1 for the Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions, respectively. In addition, the results of the interference and actual water sample analyses showed that the peak currents of target ion were not strongly interfered with, by 50-times interference ions, such as Al(III), As(III/V), Ca(II), Cr(III), and Zn(II). The proposed CoFe 2 O 4 –CoFe microsphere-based electrochemical sensor can be potentially applied to detect Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in untreated tap water and other environmental samples, simultaneously.

Cellular responses can be regulated and manipulated through combining stimuli-responsive biomaterial with external stimulus. In this present, the magneto-responsive CoFe 2 O 4 /P(VDF-TrFE) nanocomposite coatings were designed to understand cell behaviors of preosteoblasts, as well as get insight into the underlying mechanism of osteogenic differentiation under static magnetic field (SMF). CoFe 2 O 4 /P(VDF-TrFE) nanocomposite coatings with differential magnetic property (low, medium and high magnetization) were prepared by incorporation of different mass fraction of CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles (6%, 13 %, 20 %) into P(VDF-TrFE) matrix. Cell experiments indicated that all nanocomposite coatings with the assistance of SMF could promote the cell attachment, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. Among different nanocomposite coatings, low magnetization coating (6%) showed a higher ALP activity and gene expression of Runx2, Col-I, OCN. Molecular biology assays demonstrated that the combination of nanocomposite coatings and SMF could significantly up-regulate the expression level of α2β1 integrin and p-ERK. Whereas, the addition of inhibitor U0126 down-regulated sharply the expression level of p-ERK, which indicated that cellular osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells was governed through α2β1 integrin-mediated MEK/ERK signaling pathways during CoFe 2 O 4 /P(VDF-TrFE) nanocomposite coatings were combined with SMF. This work provided a promising strategy to enhance cellular osteogenic differentiation through a remote-control manner, which exhibited great potential in the application of bone tissue repair and regeneration.

Simple, fast, and sensitive detection methods are required for reduced glutathione (GSH), a metabolic substance that acts as an indicator for a variety of diseases and is also found in numerous supplements and drugs. Herein, a sensitive and selective photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was developed for GSH detection. The novel PEC sensor was fabricated using CoFe 2 O 4 nanoporous spheres and copper tetraaminophthalocyanine–graphene oxide (CuTAPc-GO) as photoelectric materials. Under illumination, CoFe 2 O 4 facilitated the spatial separation of the photogenerated charge carriers in CuTAPc-GO, thereby enhancing the photocurrent signal of the PEC sensor. The influences of pH, CoFe 2 O 4 amount, coating amount, and applied bias potential on the PEC response toward GSH were investigated. Under optimized conditions, the designed PEC sensor presented a wide linear response range for GSH of 0.25–320 μM with a detection limit of 0.016 μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Moreover, this PEC sensor exhibited excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and stability, showing satisfactory results for the detection of GSH in urine and pharmaceutical drugs.

Three kinds of ferrates (NiFe 2 O 4 , ZnFe 2 O 4 and CoFe 2 O 4 ) were prepared via the facile solvothermal method and characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, FT-IR and BET instruments. The NiFe 2 O 4 , CoFe 2 O 4 and ZnFe 2 O 4 particles possess hollow structure with average particle size of 70, 220 and 360 nm, respectively. The catalytic performance of the ferrates for AP thermal decomposition were studied using DSC and TG-DTG methods, and the decomposition mechanism of AP were suggested. The catalytic effects of different ferrates for AP thermal decomposition were significantly different. The CoFe 2 O 4 has the best catalytic activity, and the high thermal decomposition peak temperature ( T HDP ) and apparent activation energy ( E a ) of AP were decreased by 108.99 °C and 37.38 kJ mol −1 in the presence of CoFe 2 O 4 sample. Adding ferrates has no obvious influence on the gas-phase decomposition products of AP, but has a great influence on the energy barrier of high temperature decomposition of AP. The excellent catalytic activity of CoFe 2 O 4 is mainly attributed to the synergistic interaction between Fe and Co, which is conducive to the thermal decomposition of AP.

In order to reduce the difficulty and risk of operation, decrease the preparation time and improve the adsorption performance of magnetic nano-silicon adsorbent with core-shell structure, a carboxylated CoFe2O4@SiO2was prepared by EDTA-functionalized method using a safe, mild and simple hydrothermal method. The results show that the prepared material of CoFe2O4@SiO2-EDTA has a maximum adsorption capacity of 103.3 mg/g for mercury ions (Hg(II)) at pH = 7. The adsorption process of Hg(II) is a chemical reaction involving chelation and single-layer adsorption, and follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models. Moreover, the removal of Hg(II) is a spontaneous and exothermic reaction. The material characterization, before and after adsorption, shows that CoFe2O4@SiO2-EDTA has excellent recyclability, hydrothermal stability and fully biodegradable properties. To summarize, it is a potential adsorption material for removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions in practical applications. Keywords:magnetic material;adsorption;heavy metal;mercury;EDTA functionalization

The use of attapulgite (ATP)-based materials for adsorption of pollutants from water and wastewater has received growing attention. However, recovering ATP-based adsorbents remains a challenge. In this study, a magnetic adsorbent ATP/CoFe2O4with high tannic acid (TA) adsorptive capacity was fabricated via a facile co-precipitation approach and was well characterized. The loaded CoFe2O4particles were embedded into the adsorbent surfaces to allow magnetic separability. For this material, its TA adsorption kinetics, isotherm behavior, and magnetic separation efficiency are reported. The developed magnetic composites had rapid sorption kinetics of 3 h, high sorption capacity of 109.36 mg/g, and good magnetic separation efficiency of 80%. The used ATP/CoFe2O4was successfully regenerated by NaOH and reused five times without a substantial reduction in TA removal and magnetic performance. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding formation and surface complexation were identified as the sorption mechanisms of TA by ATP/CoFe2O4.Keywords:attapulgite;adsorption;CoFe2O4magnetic nanoparticle;tannic acid

PVDF-CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) thick membranes were synthesized by solvent casting method. The mixed organic solvents consist of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and Ethyl acetate (EA), in which the mass ratios of NMP and EA (NMP:EA = 1:0, 1:1, and 1:2) and the temperature of solvent evaporation (range from 50 to 80 °C) has been considered. The phase structure, β-PVDF phase content, and electrical and magnetic properties of these membranes were investigated to reveal the effect of EA addition and temperature on these properties. Results manifest that all samples showed coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties at room temperature. EA addition makes film more compact, which may be responsible for the differences in ferromagnetic properties. Adding EA and enhancing temperature resulted in phase transition of PVDF from α and γ to β, which contributed to membranes’ ferroelectric performances. In all samples, NMP:EA = 1:2 treated at 80 °C exhibits the maximum β-phase fraction and polarization (Pmax) of 87.2% and 2.398 μC cm −2 , respectively. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The aryl organophosphate flame retardant triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) has been frequently detected in environment and biota, and the potential risks of TPhP to aquatic organisms have also been demonstrated. The degradation of TPhP by CoFe 2 O 4 activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was studied in this work. At initial pH of 7.0, 10 μM TPhP could be removed by 99.5% with 0.25 g/L CoFe 2 O 4 and 0.5 mM PMS after 6 min oxidation, indicating the excellent performance of CoFe 2 O 4 activated PMS process on the treatment of TPhP. The influence of PMS and CoFe 2 O 4 dosage, initial pH, humic acid (HA), and anions (Cl − , NO 3 − , and HCO 3 − ) on TPhP degradation were investigated systematically. Results showed that the degradation of TPhP was enhanced with increasing PMS concentrations from 0.1 to 1 mM, while it reduced as CoFe 2 O 4 dosage increased. TPhP degradation efficiencies depended on solution pH with neutral pH showing the optimum degradation conditions. Recycling experiment indicated that the CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) possessed high potential for reusability. The radical identification experiments were performed and SO 4 • − was confirmed as the dominant radicals in TPhP degradation, and activation mechanism of PMS by CoFe 2 O 4 NPs was hence explained. Humic acids (HA) (2–20 mg/L) as the representative organic natural matter existing in environment inhibited TPhP removal. Anions including Cl − , NO 3 − , and HCO 3 – all reduced TPhP degradation. In addition, TPhP degradation products were identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the degradation pathways of TPhP were proposed accordingly.

A novel graphene–carbon nanotube (graphene–CNT)/CoFe 2 O 4 /polyaniline composite with reticular branch structures had been fabricated by in situ chemical polymerization method. The textured structures of the as-prepared composites were characterized by the fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphology was analyzed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electromagnetic properties were tested by vibrating sample magnetometer and four-probe conductivity tester. The results showed that the graphene–CNT/CoFe 2 O 4 /polyaniline composite had the unique reticular branch structures. When the mass ratio of the graphene–CNT/CoFe 2 O 4 to aniline was 1:3, the magnetic saturation value of the composite achieved 39.6 emu g −1 , and the conductivity reached 1.957 S cm −1 . Based on the experimental results, a probable formation mechanism for the unique reticular branch structures was proposed.

Magnetic cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) particles were synthesized via a solvothermal pathway by using the gel of natural lotus roots as bio-gel template. Samples with porous structure and of large specific area (∼95.6 m 2 /g) were prepared, which were assembled by CoFe 2 O 4 particles of uniform sizes ( ca. 15.0 nm). The annealed CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles were proven to be highly efficient catalysts for aerobic oxidation of cyclohexane . Factors such as oxygen pressure, temperature, reaction time and self-catalysis by adding cyclohexanone have been studied in view of improving the conversion of cyclohexane as well as the selectivity of KA oil (cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol). Optimum parameters were found at an initial O 2 pressure of 1.6 MPa when the reaction was conducted for 6.0 h at the temperature of 150 °C. The maximum conversion of cyclohexane oxidation reaches 16.43%, and the selectivity 90.3% for KA oil was obtained. This research provides a facile way of developing green catalysts in the aerobic oxidation of cyclohexane.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) holds pivotal importance in sustainable energy conversion, as it forms the critical half-reaction in various electrochemical processes, including water splitting for hydrogen production and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Here, a CoFe 2 O 4 @Co 3 O 4 nano-composite was synthesized using a facile hydrothermal process and deposited onto the surface of nickel foam through electrophoresis. Characterization using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS confirmed the successful synthesis of the composite, exhibiting characteristic peaks of both Co 3 O 4 and CoFe 2 O 4 . The nano-composite exhibited a more amorphous phase than pure oxides, benefiting electrocatalytic activity. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy highlighted the composite’s morphological characteristics, showcasing a Co 3 O 4 island distribution on the CoFe 2 O 4 surface. Electrochemical evaluations revealed the superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of CoFe 2 O 4 @Co 3 O 4 , with low overpotentials, faster kinetics, and enhanced stability compared to pure oxides and the benchmark RuO 2 catalyst. A comprehensive analysis was carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior during electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction. This study unveils the intricate charge and electron transfer mechanisms between cobalt and iron atoms, providing insights into their collaborative role throughout the OER process. Graphical Abstract

Green hydrogen is a crucial element in the hydrogen value chain, encompassing hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and application. The production of green hydrogen via NaBH 4 hydrolysis (SBH) entails a high cost. However, the fast kinetics of this process with a catalyst compensate for the substantial cost, especially in specific applications, such as local or intermittent use. Silver is known for its excellent catalytic properties. Its high catalytic activity is a key factor in achieving efficient hydrogen generation from (SBH). In this study, a nanocomposite catalyst composed of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), CoFe 2 O 4 , and carbon nanotubes (CNT) was investigated to demonstrate an effective catalyst design approach to achieve enhanced hydrogen generation performance. The H 2 production rate in the presence of Ag-based/CoFe 2 O 4 –CNT was 320 mL min −1 g −1 , and the apparent activation energy was 14.7 kJ mol −1 , superior to that of Ag-based catalysts reported in the literature. Analyses of the observed outcomes revealed that the CNT was decorated with well-dispersed AgNPs and CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles. The synergistic effects of AgNPs, CoFe 2 O 4 , and CNT were demonstrated by analyzing the kinetic behaviour of each component based on systematic comparisons. Furthermore, the paramagnetic property of CoFe 2 O 4 enables harvesting of the catalyst using an external magnetic field, and it was verified that the reactivity of the collected catalyst was maintained throughout seven successive cycles. The outstanding catalytic performance of Ag/CoFe 2 O 4 – CNT should be attributed to the uniform dispersion of nanoparticles on the CNT surface. Furthermore, our key approach for developing efficient Ag-based carbon advanced catalysts for SBH in the future is to ensure their suitability for industrial applications.
