A Highly Sensitive 3D-Printed Flexible Sensor for Sensing Small Pressures in Deep-Sea High-Pressure Environment

Siqi Hu,Wuxu Zhang,Shengbin Li,Yuwei Wang,Zhiyi Gao,Xiangling Xia,Huiyun Xiao,Qi Zhang,Dan Xu,Feng Xu,Jinyun Liu,Baoru Bian,Yuanzhao Wu,Yiwei Liu,Jie Shang,Run-Wei Li

The origin of life on Earth is believed to be from the ocean, which offers abundant resources in its depths. However, deep-sea operations are limited due to the lack of underwater robots and rigid grippers with sensitive force sensors. Therefore, it is crucial for deep-sea pressure sensors to be integrated with mechanical hands for manipulation. Here, a flexible stress sensor is presented that can function effectively under high water pressure in the deep ocean. Inspired by biological structures found in the abyssal zone, our sensor is designed with an internal and external pressure balance structure (hollow interlocking spherical structure). The digital light processing (DLP) three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is utilized to construct this complex structure after obtaining optimized structural parameters using finite element simulation. The sensor exhibits linear sensitivity of 0.114 kPa–1 within the range of 0–15 kPa and has an extremely short response time of 32 ms, good dynamic-static load response capability, and excellent resistance cycling stability. It shows high sensitivity of 1.74 kPa–1 even under 30 MPa static water pressures and the theoretical working pressure can exceed 110 MPa, which provides a new solution for deep-sea robots.

3D light-curing printing to construct versatile octopus-bionic patches

Wen Li,Xiaole Hu,Hongsheng Liu,Jinhuan Tian,Lihua Li,Binghong Luo,Changren Zhou,Lu Lu

Reliable, fast and switchable gluing modes are critically important in medical adhesives and intelligent climbing robot applications. The octopus-bionic patch has attracted the attention of many scholars. The suction cup structure of the octopus achieves adhesion through differential pressure, showing strong adhesion in both dry and wet environments. However, the construction of the octopus-bionic patch remains limited in terms of adaptability, personalization and mass production. Herein, a composite hydrogel consisting of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) and acrylamide (AAM) was developed, and a structure mimicking the octopus sucker was constructed by digital light processing (DLP). The obtained octopus-bionic patch has strong adhesion, good biocompatibility and multi-functionality. Compared with the template method in most studies, the octopus-bionic patch constructed by the DLP printing method has the advantages of customizability and low cost. In addition, the DLP printing method endows the patch surface with an octopus-like groove structure for a better bionic effect.

Solventless 3D printed high-temperature resistant cyclosiloxane-containing resin for low-shrinkage ceramization and nano-functional composite development

Zihao Zhou,Xinran Zhou,Xueyu Yuan,Bing Li,Yujie Song,Ming Liu

Digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology has the advantage of rapid preparation of high-precision complex devices. However, photosensitive resin's insufficient high-temperature resistance and mechanical properties limit its application in aerospace and structural functional devices. Herein, we propose a photosensitive cyclosiloxane-containing resins through thiol-ene click reaction. The UV cured cyclosiloxane-containing resins showed high-temperature resistance (5% weight loss ≈ 400 °C), tunable mechanical properties, low temperature derived ceramics etc. With photosensitive characteristics of the developed systems proven by the photo-rheology studies, printing parameters were calculated by Beer-Lambert's law to achieve precise control of the 3D printed constructs with complex geometries. This study also demonstrates the feasibility of ceramicization of the 3D printed parts and the incorporation of nano-functional materials (MXene, invisible ink) for functional device preparation.

3D bioprinting of corneal decellularized extracellular matrix: GelMA composite hydrogel for corneal stroma engineering

Mingshan Zhang,Fang Yang,Daobo Han,Shi-yao Zhang,Yipeng Dong,Xinyu Li,Liyun Ling,Zhichao Deng,Xuewei Cao,Jianguo Tian,Qing Ye,Yan Wang

Millions of individuals across the world suffer from corneal stromal diseasesthat impair vision. Fortunately, three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technologywhich has revolutionized the field of regenerative tissue engineering makes itfeasible to create personalized corneas. In this study, an artificial corneawith a high degree of precision, smoothness, and programmable curvature wasprepared by using digital light processing (DLP) 3D bioprinting in one piecewith no support structure, and the construct was then confirmed by opticalcoherence tomography (OCT). On the basis of this approach, we developed a novelcorneal decellularized extracellular matrix/gelatin methacryloyl (CECM-GelMA)bioink that can produce complex microenvironments with highly tunable mechanicalproperties while retaining high optical transmittance. Furthermore, thecomposite hydrogel was loaded with human corneal fibroblasts (hCFs), and in vitro experiments showed that the hydrogel maintainedhigh cell viability and expressed core proteins. In vivo testsrevealed that the hydrogel might promote epithelial regeneration, keep thematrix aligned, and restore clarity. This demonstrates how crucial a role CECMplays in establishing a favorable environment that encourages the transformationof cell function. Therefore, artificial corneas that can be rapidly customizedhave a huge potential in the development of in vitro cornealmatrix analogs.

3D printing of glass aspheric lens by digital light processing

Dexing Zhu,Jian Zhang,Qiao Xu,Yaguo Li

3D printing is capable of fabricating glass components with complex shapes that are challenging for traditional processing techniques. Here, we describe a paradigm of 3D printing of centimeter-sized glass aspheric lenses by Digital Light Processing (DLP). The printed lenses were post-processed using spin coating technique to reduce the layered structures. Our process involved the use of a glass slurry composed of UV-curable resins and silica nanoparticles, with the printed part undergoing thermal debinding and sintering to achieve transparency. The glass slurry exhibited significantly higher viscosities near the solid-liquid interface, which can result in a resin tray failure when applying a layer thickness below 50 μm in the DLP process. The printed lens exhibited a smooth surface with RMS < 15 nm, a surface profile deviation <170 μm and an imaging resolution of 45.3lp/mm.

KH571 construct interfacial molecular bridge in calcium silicate/TMPTA/HDDA scaffolds for improving mechanical properties, biodegradability and photopolymerization

Yutong Chen,Zhitao Yin,Yue Zhao,Zhengyang Jin,Seeram Ramakrishna,Yan Xu,Xujing Zhang

Digital Light Processing (DLP) offers the potential for personalized bone implants. Within this method, the interfacial bonding capacity of inorganic/organic materials and the solid-phase content of the slurry emerge as primary factors influencing scaffolds mechanical properties. In this research, KH571 was applied to establish an interfacial “molecular bridge”, adopting in situ coupling technology to forge stable covalent bonds between calcium silicate (CSi) and KH571. Chemical grafting, surface photografting, and photopolymerization techniques were then utilized to construct a photo-crosslinked network by CSi-KH571-TMPTA/HDDA slurry, thereby transforming the weak physical connections at the interface into strong chemical bonds. Consequently, the curing capacity and mechanical properties of the scaffolds were enhanced. Further control grain size, crystal phase transition, and shrinkage of CSi-KH571 scaffolds, post-treatment sintering processes were employed, resulting in scaffolds with a high content of β-CSi. Moreover, the optimal process parameters were selected concerning grafting rate, chemical composition, microscopic morphology, crystalline transformation, dimensional accuracy, mechanical properties, biodegradability and biocompatibility of CSi-KH571. The elastic modulus and compressive properties of CSi25-55 scaffolds exhibited a notable improvement of 29.71 % and 59.30 %, respectively, compared to CSi-50 scaffolds. By regulating the phase composition of CSi, CSi25-55 scaffolds were designed to possess a controllable degradation. In vitro cell culture experiments validated its excellent biocompatibility and promoted the proliferation and differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) as well as the deposition of bone matrix. Herein, a novel and sustainable approach has been promoted for enhancing the interfacial bonding capacity of inorganic/organic materials and the solid-phase content of printing slurry, which lays the foundation for the printing of high-resolution degradable bioceramic scaffolds.

3D bioprinting by reinforced bioink based on photocurable interpenetrating networks for cartilage tissue engineering

Jingjie Shen,Wenjing Song,Jia Liu,Xiaoyun Peng,Zhuhao Tan,Yingni Xu,Sa Liu,Li Ren

Cartilage has a limited ability to repair itself, highlighting the urgent need for suitable materials for cartilage regeneration. Achieving a balance between cell survival environment and hydrogel crosslinking density is crucial for photosensitive cell-laden cartilage repair materials to achieve both high strength and good cell viability. Here, an interpenetrating hydrogel consisted of methacrylate gelatin (GelMA) and glycidyl methacrylate silk fibroin (SG) was introduced. Compared to GelMA hydrogel, GelMA/SG had desired mechanical properties, with achieving up to 5 times of compression modulus and 6 times of compression failure energy. Meanwhile, the chondrocytes inside GelMA/SG exhibited great viability which was over 90 %. GelMA/SG as a bioink had favorable printability for digital light processing (DLP) bioprinting. The mesh DLP-printed scaffolds with high precision were created and GelMA/SG had a better shape retention ability than GelMA. Moreover, GelMA/SG cell-laden scaffolds had high strength while chondrocytes proliferated significantly in vitro culture. They were implanted under the skin of nude mice to evaluate ectopic chondrogenesis in vivo . The GelMA/SG cell-laden scaffolds indicated little deformation and high expression of collagen type II and glycosaminoglycans, which was advantageous for cartilage regeneration. The scaffold and its fabrication strategy provide potential solutions for clinical cartilage repair problems in the future.
