Further research into more cost-effective methods to treat toxic metal-ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Me-EDTA) complexes is required due to their high bioavailability. In this study, we compared electrodialysis (ED) with different compartment designs (2-, 3- and 4-compartment designs) and electrochemical oxidation (EO, 1-compartment design) to treat a dilute Cu(II)-EDTA solution (1 mM). After a 48-h treatment with a constant current applied at 32 mA, the Cu removal efficiencies were achieved at 49%, 87%, 79% and 96% for 1-compartment EO and 2- to 4-compartment ED, respectively, and the total organic carbon concentrations decreased from 138 mg/L to 100, 64, 57 and 39 mg/L, respectively. The energy consumptions for 1-compartment EO and 2- to 4-compartment ED were 7.7, 8.4, 13.9 and 15.4 W h, respectively. Based on all above results, the most cost-effective design was determined to be the 2-compartment ED. Moreover, the 3- and 4-compartment ED treatments have faster contaminant removal kinetics than 1-compartment EO and 2-compartment ED. This study clarified the mechanisms of the migration and the transformation of Cu-EDTA during EO and ED with different membrane combinations, which is helpful for improved selection of compartment design for metal-chelate complex removal.

In the existence of appropriate amount of disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA), precipitation would not occur in seawater and other natural waters even if the sample solution was adjusted to strong basicity, and the NH3-OPA-sulfite reaction at the optimal pH range could be used to determine ammonium in natural waters. Based on this, a modified o-phthalaldehyde fluorometric analytical method has been established to determine ultratrace ammonium in natural waters. Experimental parameters, including reagent concentration, pH, reaction time, and effect of EDTA, were optimized throughout the experiments based on univariate experimental design. The results showed that the optimal pH range was between 10.80 and 11.70. EDTA did not obviously affect the fluorometric intensity. The linearity range of the proposed method was 0.032–0.500 µmol/L, 0.250–3.00 µmol/L, and 1.00–20.0 µmol/L at the excitation/emission slit of 3 nm/5 nm, 3 nm/3 nm, and 1.5 nm/1.5 nm, respectively. The method detection limit was 0.0099 µmol/L. Compared to the classical OPA method, the proposed method had the advantage of being more sensitive and could quantify ultratrace ammonium without enrichment.

A pH-responsive carrier based on an ethylenediaminetetraacetic-calcium-alginate (EDTA-Ca-Alg) system was developed by controlling the release of Ca 2+ . The system remained in the solution state at neutral pH since EDTA completely chelated the Ca 2+ . In contrast, a hydrogel immediately formed when the pH was below 4.0, which triggered the in situ release of Ca 2+ from the EDTA-Ca compound and led to alginate-Ca binding. Taking advantage of the pH sensitivity, we prepared hydrogel microspheres with uniform size to entrap Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 53103 through emulsification. In an acidic environment, the hydrogel structure remained compact with negligible pores to protect L. rhamnosus ATCC 53103. However, in a neutral intestinal environment, the hydrogel structure gradually disassembled because of the Ca 2+ release from the hydrogel, which caused cell release. Therefore, a pH-responsive carrier was developed for the protection and the controlled release of cells in gastrointestinal tract, thus providing potential for oral delivery of probiotics.

An optimized metal oxide electrode (Ti/SnO 2 -Sb-Pd) was prepared via thermal decomposition and used in the electrochemical degradation of Ni-EDTA. The electrode was characterized by SEM, XRD, XPS, and electrochemical characterizations including linear-sweep voltammetry (LSV), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronopotentiometry (CP) techniques. It was found that Pd doping could effectively change the surface morphology and lattice parameters of the metal oxide electrode. Pd can facilitate the entry of more Sb into SnO 2 crystals and promote the reduction of Sb from the +5 to the +3 state. The interaction of these metals raised the oxygen evolution potential (OEP) and electrochemical surface area of the electrode, in addition to reducing the degradation potential and increasing the degradation current of Ni-EDTA. When the molar ratio of Pd:Sn was 2.5%, the electrode could simultaneously degrade 87.5% of Ni-EDTA and recycle 17.9% of elemental Ni on the cathode within 120 min. At the same time, with Pd doping, the lifetime of the electrode was increased more than 40 times, demonstrating good potential for application in industry.

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a prospective method to generate pure hydrogen. The development of superior electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant materials, plays a critical role in the future. CoSe 2 , one of the earth-abundant electrocatalysts, has been proved to be a promising catalyst for hydrogen generation . In our work, flower-like CoSe 2 nanorods with high quality are successfully synthesized through a facile ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid ligand (EDTA)-assisted hydrothermal process. The flower-like CoSe 2 nanorods show the brilliant electrochemical HER performance with 100 mA cm −2 at overpotential of 273 mV, a small Tafel slope of 35 mV dec −1 and strong durability in acid solution. The sparkly HER catalytic activity of CoSe 2 can be ascribed to its particular structure with large surface area and abundant active sites. Therefore, this work offers an outstanding candidate for improving hydrogen production capabilities by water electrolysis .

In this study, a novel bamboo activated carbon (BAC) with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) functionality was prepared by direct grafting in the presence of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a crosslinking agent. The BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA was characterized by SEM, TEM, TGA, FTIR, XPS and its adsorption property for removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) under various experimental conditions was also investigated. The characterization results reflected that EDTA was successfully assembled on the surface of the BAC and average pore size increased from 4.10 to 4.83 nm as BAC grafted with EDTA. Adsorption data fitted very well in Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. As compared with the raw BAC, the maximum adsorption capacities of BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA for the Pb(II) and Cu(II) increased from 45.45 to 123.45 mg g −1 and from 6.85 to 42.19 mg g −1 , since the existence of EDTA on modified BAC promoted the formation of chemical complex. The removal of heavy metal ions mainly depended on the complexation with EDTA and the electrostatic attractions with negatively charged surface of BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA. The adsorption of Pb(II)/Cu(II) on the BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA was pH dependent and pH 5–6 was considered an optimum. However, lower temperature favored the adsorption and the maximum adsorption was recorded at 20 °C. In addition, BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA had an excellent reusability with about 40% decline in the adsorption capacity for Pb(II) after fifth reuse. Insignificant influences of co-existing cations and natural organic matter (NOM) were found on the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II). All the results demonstrate that BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA is a potential adsorbent for metal ions in wastewater.

A novel tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) functionalized magnetic mesoporous silica adsorbent (FNMs/TEPA) was prepared for adsorption of Cr(III)-EDTA from wastewater. Characterization of the prepared adsorbent certified that TEPA was modified onto the magnetic mesoporous silicon (FNMs), while FNMs/TEPA maintained the ordered mesoporous and pristine magnetic properties. The batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that TEPA significantly enhanced the removal capacity of the adsorbent for Cr(III)-EDTA. FNMs/TEPA exhibited an excellent adsorption property (13.84 mg∙g –1 ) at pH 4.0. Even in the existence of high concentrations of coexisting ions and organic acids, the adsorption performance of FNMs/TEPA was stable. Experimental characterization and density functional theory (DFT) demonstrated that the adsorption of Cr(III)-EDTA was ascribed to the electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and complexation between Cr(III)-EDTA and amino groups on the adsorbent surface. The analysis of the Independent Gradient Model (IGMH) shown that electrostatic interaction is the main mode of action in the adsorption process. Moreover, FNMs/TEPA demonstrated remarkable reusability in three regeneration cycles. These findings indicated that FNMs/TEPA possessed excellent application prospect in the disposal of wastewater containing Cr(III)-EDTA.

Background: Early detection of kidney diseases can be challenging as conventional methods such as blood tests or imaging techniques (computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or ultrasonography) may be insufficient to assess renal function. A single-photon emission CT (SPECT) renal scan provides a means of measuring glomerular filtration rates (GFRs), but its diagnostic accuracy is limited due to its planar imaging modality and semi-quantification property. In this study, we aimed to improve the accuracy of GFR measurement by preparing a positron emission tonometry (PET) tracer 68Ga-Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (68Ga-EDTA) and comprehensively evaluating its performance in healthy mice and murine models of renal dysfunction. Methods: Dynamic PET scans were performed in healthy C57BL/6 mice and in models of renal injury, including acute kidney injury (AKI) and unilateral ureter obstruction (UUO) using 68Ga-EDTA. In a 30-min dynamic scan, PET images and time-activity curves (TACs) were acquired. Renal function and GFR values were measured using renograms and validated through serum renal function parameters, biodistribution results, and pathological staining. Results: 68Ga-EDTA dynamic PET imaging quantitatively captured the tracer elimination process. The calculated GFR values were 0.25 ± 0.02 ml/min in healthy mice, 0.01 ± 0.00 ml/min in AKI mice, and 0.25 ± 0.04, 0.29 ± 0.03 and 0.24 ± 0.01 ml/min in UUO mice, respectively. Furthermore, 68Ga-EDTA dynamic PET imaging and GFRPET were able to differentiate mild renal impairment before serum parameters indicated any changes. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that 68Ga-EDTA dynamic PET provides a reliable and precise means of evaluating renal function in two murine models of renal injury. These results hold promise for the widespread clinical application of 68Ga-EDTA dynamic PET in the near future.

Wet Fe(II)EDTA complexation is a promising technology for NO removal, but its practical application is severely hindered by O 2 -induced oxidation of Fe(II)EDTA and inefficient regeneration of Fe(II)EDTA–NO. Herein, an oxygen-vacancy-rich BiOCl/g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme heterojunction with interfacial Bi–O–C covalent bonds was constructed for oxygen-resistant photocatalytic–complexation denitrification. Structural characterizations and density functional theory calculations confirmed that Bi–O–C bonds served as atomic-level charge-transfer channels, strengthening interfacial coupling and promoting directional S-scheme charge separation. This configuration preserved strongly reductive electrons on g-C 3 N 4 for the reduction of Fe( III )EDTA and Fe(II)EDTA–NO, while retaining oxidative holes on BiOCl. Meanwhile, oxygen vacancies on BiOCl acted as preferential O 2 adsorption and activation sites, converting O 2 into ·O 2 − and thereby transforming O 2 from a competitive oxidant into an electron-buffering species that suppresses BiOCl photocorrosion and regulates interfacial redox cycling. The optimized 20BCN–Fe( II )EDTA system achieved an average NO removal efficiency of 88.92% under 14% O 2 and maintained above 80.02% efficiency after 30 cycles. Product analysis revealed a reduction-dominated NO conversion pathway, with NH 4 + and N 2 as the major reduced nitrogen products, a total reduced-product selectivity of 91.9%, and a nitrogen recovery of 94.4%. Kinetic analysis confirmed that NO absorption proceeded in a fast reaction regime enhanced by interfacial redox reactions. This work provides an atomic-level strategy for designing oxygen-resistant photocatalytic systems for wet denitrification under realistic flue-gas conditions.

The peroxodisulfate (PDS)-based oxidation systems are promising for Cu(II) complex decomplexation owing to its capacity to harness the self-enhanced decomplexation (SED) effect of Cu(II) complexes. This phenomenon was conventionally attributed to liquid-phase autocatalysis via Fenton-like reactions between daughter Cu(II) species and PDS. However, this frequently adopted hypothesis is inconsistent with the actual catalytic activity of Cu(II) species and has been challenged by our preliminary results. Herein, we revisit the decomplexation of copper(II)-ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Cu(II)-EDTA) in UV/PDS system, with particular emphasis on correcting the catalytic behaviors of Cu species and clarifying the indispensable role of UV-irradiation in SED effect. Both acidic and alkaline conditions exhibit significant SED effect, but we reveal a pH-dependent SED mechanism that is fundamentally different from the prevailing liquid-phase autocatalysis mechanism. Under acidic conditions, Cu(II) complexes exhibit enhanced catalytic capacity with decreasing ligand coordination strength, primarily stemming from the activation of PDS by Cu(I) species produced via the irradiation-induced intramolecular charge transfer; In alkaline environments, only liberated Cu(II) substantially contribute to SED effect via spontaneous hydrolysis, forming nanostructured CuO after aging, which activates PDS through heterogeneous Fenton-like processes. While acidic conditions demonstrate faster decomplexation, alkaline-generated solid products facilitate multi-cycle treatment efficiency and alkaline conditions also exhibits stronger resistance to chloride. This work corrects the misinterpretation of SED mechanism in UV/PDS/Cu(II)-EDTA system, and provides a fundamental and accurate mechanistic basis for the efficient treatment of copper-containing organic wastewater by PDS-based processes.

Large-scale hydrogen production via water electrolysis faces a freshwater shortage. Direct seawater electrolysis offers a solution but encounters new challenges. Herein, we report a feasible strategy to both prevent metal hydroxide deposition and boost the hydrogen evolution reaction by adding a chelating agent, EDTA-Na 4 , that chelates with Mg 2+ /Ca 2+ , thus inhibiting their deposition and gathering them near the cathode surface, resulting in breaking the ordered hydrogen bond networks of interfacial water and reducing the activation energy of water dissociation. Furthermore, hydrolysis of –COO − also promoted water dissociation to produce more active *H and *OH near the electrode surface that in turn serves as a diffusion medium for *OH, accelerating mass transfer and enabling seawater electrolysis to exhibit a stable performance, which operates continuously at 100 mA cm −2 @2.20 V and 200 mA cm −2 @2.58 V for 400 h in the symmetric electrolyzer and 500 mA cm −2 @2.29 V for over 500 h in the asymmetric electrolyzer. This study provides a new perspective to address the issues of stable and scalable direct seawater electrolysis for practical green hydrogen production.

Heavy metals frequently coexist with organic ligands in water as heavy metal complexes, which are difficult to remove routinely. In this study, a novel EDTA-based covalent organic framework (COF-EDTA) was synthesized at room temperature through the incorporation of EDTA into a hydroxyl-functionalized COF (COF-OH) for enhanced removal of both free Pb(II) and Pb(II)-citrate complexes. Structural and compositional properties of the materials were analyzed via PXRD, FTIR, and 13 C NMR, while surface morphology, elemental distribution, specific surface area, and thermal stability were examined by TEM, SEM-EDS, BET, and TGA, respectively. Pb(II) adsorption experiments were subsequently performed to assess removal efficiency. In the single Pb(II) system, EDTA modification significantly improved the adsorption performance, with the equilibrium adsorption amount increasing from 38.51 mg/g (COF-OH) to 135.6 mg/g (COF-EDTA), an increase of approximately 252%. COF-OH adsorbed Pb(II) via coordinate and hydrogen bonding, while the significant adsorption of Pb(II) by COF-EDTA was attributed to chelation and ion exchange. In the Pb(II)-citrate binary system, COF-EDTA preferentially adsorbed free Pb 2+ at a citrate-to-Pb(II) molar ratio of 0.5:1. When Pb-Citrate − is the dominant species (> 93%), COF-EDTA enhanced removal of Pb(II) through ligand displacement (primary pathway, ~75% efficiency) coupled with intact adsorption of Pb-Citrate − complexes (secondary pathway, ~25%). The DFT calculation validated the feasibility of ligand displacement mediated Pb(II) capture by COF-EDTA, while COF-OH lacked this capability. This work provides critical guidelines for exploring novel adsorbents to enhance the removal of heavy metal complexes.
