Nano–Confinement Construction of FeCo@NCNTs nanocomposite for pH–Universal Oxygen Reduction Catalysis and High–power Zn–air battery

Yaqian Dong,Shuyu Yue,Kai Wang,Taotao Li,Tiehua Ma,Dong Guo,Yuxiang Wu,Zhibo Wu,Yaohui Zhang,Liang junfei

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pose a critical bottleneck in the energy conversion efficiency of fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Developing non-precious metal catalysts with pH-universal adaptability and high cost-effectiveness is an urgent need in the field. In this study, we introduce an innovative biomass pyrolysis-driven nano-confinement strategy. Expired milk powder and g-C 3 N 4 are utilized as dual-function carbon sources to successfully construct a composite structure of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) encapsulating FeCo alloy nanoparticles (FeCo@NCNT). During high-temperature pyrolysis, the decomposition products of milk powder deposit onto the molten FeCo particles, forming carbon nanotubes, while the decomposition of g-C 3 N 4 provides nitrogen doping and induces periodic distortions in the carbon lattice, resulting in nanoconfined morphology of FeCo@NCNT. This structure formed by N-doped carbon nanotubes encapsulating FeCo alloy enables the catalyst to achieve half-wave potentials of 0.83 V, 0.71 V, and 0.60 V in 0.1 mol·L −1 KOH, 0.5 mol·L −1 H 2 SO 4 , and 0.1 mol·L −1 PBS electrolytes, respectively. The assembled zinc–air battery exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 1.51 V and a peak power density of 169 mW∙cm –2 . This approach provides a new paradigm for biomass waste resource utilization and the design of energy catalysts for pH-universal applications.

Facile synthesis of ultrafine iron-cobalt (FeCo) nanocrystallite-embedded boron/nitrogen-codoped porous carbon nanosheets: Accelerated water splitting catalysts

Lan Xiao,Yibin Wang,Tingzheng Fu,Qiusen Liu,Fei Guo,Yingjie Zhang,Mian Li,Xiangjie Bo,Tingting Liu

Designing two-dimensional (2D) porous carbon nanosheets is expected to boost the water splitting efficiency of low-cost iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co)-based catalysts. Nevertheless, the aggregations, tedious preparation procedures, and expensive precursors for synthesizing 2D porous carbon nanosheets have hindered their widespread application. Herein, for the first time, we developed a low-cost method for large-scale and rapid synthesis of the three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically porous architectures self-assembled by the ultrafine FeCo nanoparticles embedded and boron/nitrogen-codoped 2D porous carbon nanosheets (denoted as FeCo@BNPCNS). The optimal FeCo@BNPCNS-900 exhibited abundant porous channels, a large surface area , and vast carbon edges/defects. Therefore, 8.10 at% electrochemically active boron (B)/nitrogen (N) centers were doped into the porous carbon nanosheets . In an alkaline solution, the optimal FeCo@BNPCNS-900 nanosheets revealed excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalytic activity , surpassing commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. For instance, the HER potential at 10 mA cm −2 [-50.6 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)] of FeCo@BNPCNS-900 was even 19.3 mV more positive than that of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (-69.9 mV vs. RHE). Meanwhile, its oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity was just a little worse than ruthenium oxide (RuO 2 ). The water electrolysis cell of FeCo@BNPCNS-900 nanosheets just required a small voltage of 1.589 V for full water splitting to achieve 10 mA cm −2 , even 70.3 mV more negative than that of the state-of-the-art 20 wt% Pt/C||RuO 2 benchmark (1.660 V) with outstanding stability. The perfect 3D hierarchically porous and honeycomb-like architecture, abundant porous channels/mesopores, and uniformly dispersed electrocatalytically active sites on FeCo@BNPCNS-900 nanosheets were responsible for the outstanding water splitting performance. Finally, this study provides an efficient strategy for the large-scale, rapid, and low-cost synthesis of 2D porous carbon nanosheets without using any template, surfactant , or expensive precursors.

Activation of persulfate by highly dispersed FeCo bimetallic alloy for in-situ remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-contaminated soil

Yang Sun,Kai Wang,Dongyun Chen,Qingfeng Xu,Najun Li,Hua Li,Jianmei Lu

Design of high-performance, environmentally friendly catalysts for remediation of contaminated soil is critical. Nano-zero-valent iron is widely used for this purpose and has high catalytic activity, but it readily agglomerates, which limits its use. To design efficient, environmentally friendly, and inexpensive soil remediation materials, we developed a Fe/Co-and nitrogen-doped carbon catalyst (FeCo/NC). The Fe and Co on the support were highly dispersed, many active sites were exposed, and the two metals exhibited synergistic catalytic effects. The ability to degrade anthracene in soil was evaluated through activating peroxodisulfate (PDS). The catalytic performance of the dual-doped catalyst was up to 24% more than that of catalysts doped with only Fe or Co. The FeCo/NC@PDS system efficiently removed 98.87% of anthracene from soil after 6 h. Moreover, the catalyst maintained excellent stability in both acidic and alkaline environments. The reaction mechanism was explored using radical quenching experiments combined with ESR spectra. In addition to a radical pathway involving OH, SO 4 − , and O 2 − , there was a non-radical pathway involving 1 O 2 . The optimum conditions for use of the catalyst were determined, and possible degradation pathways for anthracene were proposed. This study provides data for the development of in-situ soil remediation catalysts.

Synthesis of magnetic FeCo/BC composite by one-step pyrolysis for degradation of bisphenol A through peroxymonosulfate/peroxydisulfate activization

Xiaotong Zhu,Yuanyuan Zhang,Shengxiao Zhang,Shuangshuang Yang,Qiang Xu

In this study, biomass carbon supported with iron and cobalt bimetal (FeCo/BC) was synthesized by a one-pot calcination method to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. Characterization with X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy showed that Fe 0 , Fe 3 O 4 , Co 0 and CoO nanocrystals were included in FeCo/BC materials. The degradation results showed Fe 0.6 Co 0.4 /BC had excellent catalytic activation performance for PMS or PDS. The Fe 0.6 Co 0.4 /BC (0.0050 g) combined with 0.25 g·L −1 of PMS could completely degrade 20 mg·L −1 BPA within 8 min, and the same amount of BPA could be removed with 0.020 g Fe 0.6 Co 0.4 /BC in the presence of 0.25 g·L −1 PDS within 20 min. The corresponding total organic carbon removal rates reached 83.49% and 77.5% respectively after 2 h. The Fe 0.6 Co 0.4 /BC also had good adaptability to solution pH and practical water body. After five cycles, the degradation rates of BPA in the two systems were all over 90%, and excellent magnetism was beneficial to the reuse of catalysts. Electron paramagnetic resonance and free radical quenching tests indicated that SO 4 •- , •OH, and 1 O 2 were the main active species involved in the BPA degradation. This work not only provided a promising catalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants, but also elucidated the synergistic effect between Fe-Co bimetal alloys during PMS and PDS activation, which would facilitate the design, synthesis, and application of catalytic materials with high efficiency.

A symmetric gradient structure enables robust CNF/FeCo/LM composite films with excellent electromagnetic interference shielding and electrical insulation

Song Yang,Maofei Du,Ying Zhang,Yuhan Wang,Ting Gu,Fei Liu

The exceptional performance of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials often stems from their high conductivity. However, EMI shielding materials with high electrical conductivity pose a risk of current leakage, which is an issue that cannot be ignored. Herein, a unique electrical insulation cellulose nanofiber/ferro cobalt/liquid metal (CNF/FeCo/LM) composite film with a symmetric gradient structure was fabricated using the vacuum-assisted filtration and cold compression techniques. In the CNF/FeCo/LM composite film, CNF/FeCo serves as the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption layer and electrical insulation protective layer, CNF/FeCo/LM functions as the EMW transmission layer, and the LM acts as the middle EMI shielding enhancement layer. The prepared symmetric gradient CNF/FeCo/LM composite film exhibits a satisfactory EMI shielding effectiveness of 39.32 dB at a thickness of only 0.17 mm, with 20 wt% of LM and 20 wt% FeCo. This performance is attributed to the symmetric gradient composite film “absorption-weak reflection-strong reflection-reabsorption” mechanism. Furthermore, this composite film also exhibits an excellent in-plane thermal conductivity of 4.85 W m−1 K−1 and outstanding volume resistance of 5.58 × 1011 Ω cm. The CNF/FeCo/LM composite film achieves a tensile strength of 56.28 MPa, an elongation at break of 21.47%, and a toughness of 7.2 MJ m−3 due to the interaction between CNF and the LM, along with a zigzag fracture path that develops within the interlayer, which facilitates stress transfer and energy absorption. This work offers a viable approach to designing high EMI shielding materials with electrical insulation, which is crucial for promoting the use of CNF matrix composites in electronic packaging.

In situ formation of fluorescent polydopamine catalyzed by peroxidase-mimicking FeCo-LDH for pyrophosphate ion and pyrophosphatase activity detection

Xuechao Xu,Xiaobo Zou,Shuwen Wu,Linjie Wang,Xiangheng Niu,Xin Li,Jianming Pan,Hongli Zhao,Minbo Lan

As pyrophosphate ion (PPi) and pyrophosphatase (PPase) play crucial roles in the pathological process of arthritis, determination of PPi and PPase in biological fluids turns to be of great importance for clinical diagnosis and therapy of arthritic diseases. In this work, we proposed a new fluorescent assay for PPi and PPase activity detection based on the competitive coordination chemistry of Fe 3+ between PPi and an in situ formed fluorescent polydopamine (PDA). FeCo layered double hydroxide (FeCo-LDH) was explored as a peroxidase mimic to facilitate the in situ formation of fluorescent PDA from dopamine mediated by low-concentration H 2 O 2 within 30 min; The formed fluorescent PDA could be significantly quenched by Fe 3+ through forming a PDA-Fe 3+ complex structure; When PPi existed, it coordinated Fe 3+ competitively against PDA and inhibited the fluorescence quenching of PDA by Fe 3+ ; When PPi was hydrolyzed under the catalysis of PPase, the Fe 3+ ion could quench the fluorescence of the formed PDA again. With these principles, our fluorescent assay was able to detect PPi and PPase activity specifically, providing detection limits down to 54 μM and 0.13 U/L, respectively. Furthermore, accurate determination of PPi and PPase activity in spiked human serum was also demonstrated using the developed assay.

A mesoporous magnetothermal nanopomegranate with acid-tolerant hierarchical structure for remote controlled drug delivery

Yanxia Yang,Yingzi Li,Xin Xia,Shengkai Li,Shen Wang,Liang Zhang,Yuqi Cheng,Long Chen,Qian Dong,Zhuo Chen

Developing acid-tolerant magnetothermal nanoplatform with robust drug loading capacity for remote controlled drug release is challenging in the harsh acid environment of stomach. Herein, a nanopomegranate-type magnetothermal controllable drug release platform (FeCo@G@MSN), consisted of magnetothermal convertor (graphene-isolated FeCo nanocrystal core, FeCo@G) and drug reservoir (mesoporous silica, MSN), with acid-tolerant hierarchical structure was developed. Benefiting from the acid tolerance of graphene and MSN, FeCo@G@MSN was stable in 1 M hydrochloric acid for more than 12 h. The nanopomegranate-type hierarchical structure endowed FeCo@G@MSN with high saturation magnetization (114.9 emu/g) to generate a magnetothermal effect and large specific surface area (293.7 m 2 /g) to provide ample space for drug loading. As a proof of concept, a heat-triggered nitric oxide (NO) precursor was loaded, and NO were controlled released by breaking of S-NO bonds through localized heat derived from magnetothermal effect of FeCo@G, resulting in an inhibition effect towards Helicobacter pylori . A chemotherapeutic drug (doxorubicin, DOX) was also loaded and controlled released by breaking of hydrogen bonds between silica and DOX under remote an alternating magnetic field, thus exhibiting an inhibition effect towards gastric cancer cells. This work provides an efficient strategy to exploit magnetothermal controlled drug release platform and offers inspiration for the treatment of gastric diseases.

Engineering hierarchical pores in FeCo-N-C catalysts to construct advanced cathode catalyst layers for AEMFCs with alleviated water management

Chaoqi Han,Ming Chen,Wenwen Shi,Ruimin Ding,Junliang Zhang,Xi Yin

Water (H 2 O) management limitations within the cathode catalyst layer (CCL), particularly for precious-metal-free metal/nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C) catalysts, severely constrain the performance of anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). To address this challenge, we implement precision pore-structure engineering at the catalyst-intrinsic level. Three hierarchically porous FeCo-N-C catalysts were synthesized, enabling the fabrication of CCLs with tailored pore architectures. The CCL prepared from the macroporous-open catalyst (o-CCL) exhibits an optimized pore structure, characterized by a restructured distribution of hydrophilic hierarchical pores along with a high porosity of 54.7% and a low tortuosity of 1.61. Simulations and experimental measurements collectively confirm that the optimized o-CCL achieves improved H 2 O distribution, enhanced gas-liquid flow velocity, and reduced oxygen (O 2 ) transport resistance. These structural advantages collectively lead to a notable improvement in AEMFC performance. The o-CCL, with an electrode area of 5 cm 2 , achieves peak power densities of 684 mW cm −2 in H 2 /air and 1153 mW cm −2 in H 2 /O 2 . This study demonstrates that pore-structure engineering at the catalyst particle level offers a viable strategy to alleviate the H 2 O-O 2 transport conflict in AEMFCs and improve overall cell performance.

Catalytic upcycling of waste polypropylene for gram-scale production of FeCo@N-doped carbon nanotubes toward efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

Ru Hong,Qingyu Liu,Qi Cao,Jiahuan Xu,Rui Xiao,Huiyan Zhang

Exploring novel low-cost and high-efficiency non-precious metal catalysts for use in oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) is of key importance. Based on catalytic pyrolysis of waste plastics, a facile method for preparing N-doped Fe/Co-encapsulated carbon nanotubes (Fe x Co y @NCNTs) was proposed. Particularly, gram-scale yield of the composite catalyst (3.87 g) was achieved in one pot with considerable atomic conversion rate of carbon (∼57.3 %) from waste polypropylene to high-quality CNTs, suggesting great potential for waste plastics valorization. The effects of Fe-to-Co ratios were studied by testing the ORR performance of each sample, indicating that as the Fe proportion increased, the ORR performance initially increased and then decreased. The Fe1Co1@NCNTs catalyst showed optimal performance which was comparable with commercial Pt/C catalyst: Particularly, an initial potential of 0.97 V vs RHE, a half-wave potential of 0.81 V vs RHE, and a limiting current density of –5.68 mA cm −2 were recorded. The encapsulated Fe and Co species in N-doped CNTs enhanced catalytic activity, while the porous carbon structure augmented the exposure of active sites. This strategy offers an auspicious platform for reusing waste plastics in the mass production of CNTs, and also provides an innovative approach for preparing low-cost, high-performance, and non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for ORRs.

Ionic liquid-derived FeCo alloys encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon framework as advanced bifunctional catalysts for rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Zhenzhen Wang,Xiaozhuang Zhou,Huihui Jin,Ding Chen,Jiawei Zhu,Rolf Hempelmann,Lei Chen,Shichun Mu

Developing bifunctional ORR&OER electrocatalysts with high activity and stability is challenging for practical application of rechargeable Zinc air batteries. Herein, an ionic liquid strategy is proposed for construction of FeCo alloys encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon as bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). By taking advantages of the unique properties such as solvent effect and low volatility, ionic liquid serves as solvent to disperse metal ions in the precursor preparation and nitrogen-containing carbon source during pyrolysis. The FeCo alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in the N-doped carbon matrix show a homogeneous distribution with average sizes of 50–100 nm. Such a core-shell structure endows the catalyst with both high ORR and OER activity and robust stability in alkaline environments. Especially, the half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) for ORR is 0.86 V and the overpotential (E over ) for OER to reach the 10 mA·cm −2 current density is only 280 mV. Furthermore, the obtained bifunctional electrocatalyst also displays high efficiency and great durability when applied in the rechargeable Zn-air battery. The specific capacity and energy density at the discharge current density of 10 mA·cm −2 reach up to 741.5 mAh·g −1 and 830.1 Wh kg −1 , respectively. It’s envisioned that this ultra-facile method would be applicable to synthesize highly efficient catalysts for other energy conversion systems.

Interface engineering of FeCo-Co structure as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries via alloying degree control strategy

Lianghao Song,Jing Zhang,Samrat Sarkar,Chenfei Zhao,Zhenwei Wang,Chengyu Huang,Liuming Yan,Yufeng Zhao

High performance zinc-air batteries (ZABs) demand highly active bifunctional catalysts for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). Herein, we report a FeCo-Co bifunctional catalyst with well-engineered interfaces between FeCo nanoalloy and metallic Co, via an alloying-degree control strategy. The FeCo-Co architecture can be obtained by manipulating the alloying degree through proper introduction of Fe, while the stacked carbon nanosheet morphology inherited from the precursor can fully expose the active sites facilitating the ion transfer. FeCo-Co interface structure enables FeCo@Co/N-C-8 catalyst to exhibit an excellent half-wave potential (0.870 V) superior to Pt/C (0.846 V) for ORR and suppressed overpotential (312 mV) than IrO 2 (321 mV) for OER. The as prepared rechargeable ZAB based on FeCo@Co/N-C-8 catalyst displays an excellent peak power density of 148 mW cm −2 and an ultrahigh open circuit voltage of 1.52 V. This research provides an innovative technique in construction of bifunctional catalysts for ZABs through alloying degree control strategies.

Hierarchical peony-like FeCo-NC with conductive network and highly active sites as efficient electrocatalyst for rechargeable Zn-air battery

Wang Yiyan,Kumar Anuj,Ma Mang,Jia Yin,Wang Yu,Zhang Ying,Zhang Guoxin,Sun Xiaoming,Yan Zifeng

Carbon materials featuring hierarchical pores and atomically dispersed metal sites are promising catalysts for energy storage and conversion applications. Herein, we developed a facile strategy to construct functional carbon materials with a fluffy peony-like structure and dense binary FeCo-N x active sites (termed as f-FeCo-CNT). By regulating the metal content in precursors, a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected conductive carbon nanotubes network was in-situ formed throughout the atomically dispersed FeCo-NC matrix during pyrolysis. Taking advantage of rich pore hierarchy and co-existence of highly active FeCo-N x sites and beneficial FeCo alloy nanoparticles, the f-FeCo-CNT material exhibited excellent bifunctional performance towards oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reactions (ORR/OER) with respect to the atomically dispersed FeCo-NC (SA-f-FeCo-NC) and commercial Pt/C+RuO 2 mixture, surpassing the SA-f-FeCo-NC with a 20 mV higher ORR half-wave potential and a 100 mV lower OER overpotential (at 10.0 mA/cm 2 ). Remarkably, the f-FeCo-CNT-assembled Zn-air battery (ZAB) possessed a maximum specific power of 195.8 mW/cm 2 , excellent rate capability, and very good cycling stability at large current density of 20.0 mA/cm 2 . This work provides a facile and feasible synthetic strategy of constructing low-cost cathode materials with excellent comprehensive ZAB performance.
