Naringin and pectin were innovatively and sequentially extracted from naturally dropped fruit of pomelo (NDFP), optimizing yields via response surface methodology (RSM). Under optimized conditions, naringin was extracted first with 70% ethanol (70 °C, 110 min, SSR 15:1v/w), followed by pectin extraction from the residue using pH 1.50 acetic acid (80 °C, 160 min, ratio 40:1v/w) naringin yield reached 42.77% with 97.6% ± 0.31% HPLC purity, while pectin yield was 14.32%. Critically, the recovered pectin was identified as low-ester and exhibited significantly superior antioxidant activity compared to commercial pectin. This work establishes an efficient sequential extraction process valorizing waste pomelo drop, yielding high-purity naringin and antioxidant-rich, low-ester pectin.

Fruits are highly prone to spoilage and decay during transportation and storage. The development of advanced packaging technologies plays a crucial role in extending the shelf life of perishable commodities. Herein, tannic acid-functionalized chitin nanocrystals (TA@ChNCs) were fabricated by leveraging the excellent properties of tannic acid (TA), which readily undergoes oxidative self-polymerization under alkaline conditions. TA@ChNCs can function as multifunctional nanofillers for the development of chitosan/gelatin bio-based films (CG/TA@ChNCs) with comprehensive performance, including excellent antioxidant and UV-blocking abilities, as well as enhanced mechanical and antibacterial properties. In addition, the moisture content, swelling ratio and water solubility of the prepared CG/TA@ChNCs nanocomposite films were significantly lower than those of the pristine chitosan/gelatin (CG) film. Finally, the CG/TA@ChNCs nanocomposite films were applied to mitigate strawberry decay. Results demonstrated that CG/TA@ChNCs films could significantly retard the weight loss of strawberries and inhibit the reduction in their firmness, thereby effectively maintaining strawberry freshness. Therefore, the fully-biobased CG/TA@ChNCs nanocomposite films, fabricated from sustainable bioresources, provide significant insights for their utilization in the field of active packaging.

Efficient uranium extraction from seawater is essential for sustaining nuclear energy, yet this process requires adsorbents with high selectivity in complex environments. Nano-trap materials exhibit superior selectivity for uranium ions; however, their capacity is often limited by substantial mass transfer resistance, which impedes the diffusion of ions to active binding sites. Inspired by the hierarchical porous structure of Liquidambar formosana fruit, known for promoting rapid mass transfer, this study constructs MOF-based nano-trap adsorbents with biomimetic hierarchical porosity using a soft-template approach. The integration of macropores within the MOF framework enhances uranyl ion transport and maximizes the accessibility of functional binding sites, thereby significantly improving adsorption efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate a 213% increase in adsorption capacity in aqueous solutions and a 150% improvement in natural seawater. This work presents a strategy to address mass transfer limitations in functionalized MOFs, offering a promising approach for developing high-selectivity adsorbents for seawater uranium extraction.

Solanum nigrumL., a widely consumed Asian medicinal edible plant, is a promising source of bioactive saponins for functional food applications. This study optimized the extraction of saponins fromS. nigrumfruits (8.59% total saponin yield), followed by isolation via column chromatography and structural elucidation using spectroscopic analyses (IR, NMR, and MS). Concurrently, the antioxidant properties and antibacterial activity of the purified substances were detected and analyzed. The three saponins (SNL1, SNL2, SNL3) were identified as γ2-Solamargine , Diosgenin, and β-Solanine. Then-butanol -purified fraction demonstrated a remarkable capacity to scavenge DPPH, hydroxyl, and ABTS radicals (DPPH IC50 = 0.0096 mg/mL; hydroxyl radical IC50 = 0.8 mg/mL; ABTS IC50 = 0.061 μg/mL), indicating the inhibition of a multi-pathway oxidative chain reaction. Concurrently, the saponins exhibited selective antimicrobial efficacy against key foodborne pathogens, particularly Escherichia coli. To the best of our knowledge, this work provides the first empirical evidence ofS. nigrumfruit saponins as dual-functional natural preservatives, synergistically suppressing lipid oxidation and microbial growth. These findings highlight their potential as safer, multi-mechanistic alternatives to synthetic additives, aligning with clean-label food industry demands.

Background The oil palm ( Elaeis guineensis ) is a crucial agricultural commodity, yielding the highest oil output among oil-bearing crops. Despite its significance, productivity challenges persist due to genetic and environmental factors. This study breaks new ground by mapping tRNA modifications in oil palm, exploring their roles during fruit ripening, an area not extensively studied in non-model crops. Results Utilizing advanced RNA mass spectrometry techniques, we identified 48 distinct tRNA modifications across 88 sites, alongside 164 genes associated with tRNA modifying enzymes. This comprehensive mapping reveals the decreasing nature of most tRNA modifications during fruit development, except for adenosine 2’-O methylation (Am). It hints at a gradual weakening of protein translation quality control and highlights a unique role for Am during fruit ripening. Additionally, lipidomic analysis tracked 674 lipids in oil palm fruits, indicating a correlation between tRNA modifications and the accumulation of specific lipids. Conclusions This study mapped tRNA modifications in oil palm for the first time and showed the diversity of dynamic changes in tRNA modifications as the fruits develop.

The effect of olive extracts extracted with deep eutectic solvent (DES: choline chloride/glycerol, dl-malic acid/sucrose/glycerol, and citric acid/glycerol, respectively) on the structure, physical properties, and functional activities of pectin films, using DES both as a plasticizer and an extraction medium were explored. The findings revealed the integration of DES as a plasticizer was observed to increase film’s water vapor permeability and elongation at break, while concurrently diminishing its opacity. Furthermore, the incorporation of DES-olive extracts significantly enhanced the tensile strength, moisture barrier property, and opacity of the film, as well as improved its antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The structural analysis indicated the interaction among DES, olive extracts, and pectin facilitated the development of more ordered structures within the films, thereby improving the thermal stability of the pectin-based films. In conclusion, pectin active films using DES as a solvent and plasticizer have the potential to be used to improve antimicrobial and antioxidant packaging materials along with acceptable water resistance.

In this study, an antibacterial material (CNF@CoMn-NS) with oxidase-like activity was created using ultrathin cobalt‑manganese nanosheets (CoMn-NS) with a larger specific surface area grown onto pineapple peel cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). The results showed that the CoMn-NS grew well on the CNF, and the obtained CNF@CoMn-NS exhibited good oxidase-like activity. The imidazole salt framework of the CNF@CoMn-NS contained cobalt and manganese in multiple oxidation states, enabling an active redox cycle and generating active oxygen species (ROS) such as singlet molecular oxygen atoms ( 1 O 2 ) and superoxide radical (·O 2 − ), resulting in the significant inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus (74.14%) and Escherichia coli (54.87%). Importantly, the CNF@CoMn-NS did not exhibit cytotoxicity. The CNF@CoMn-NS further self-assembled into a CNF@CoMn-NS paper with flexibility, stability, and antibacterial properties , which can effectively protect the wound of two varieties of pears from decay caused by microorganisms . This study demonstrated the potential of using renewable and degradable CNF as substrate combined with artificial enzymes as a promising approach to creating antibacterial materials for food preservation and even extending to textiles and biomedical applications.

Carotenoids are major pigments contributing to fruit coloration. We previously reported that the apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) mutant fruits of ‘Beni Shogun’ and ‘Yanfu 3’ show a marked difference in fruit coloration. However, the regulatory mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains unclear. In this study, we determined that carotenoid is the main factor influencing fruit flesh color. We identified an R1-type MYB transcription factor, MdMYBS1, which was found to be highly associated with carotenoids and abscisic acid (ABA) contents of apple fruits. Overexpression of MdMYBS1 promoted, and silencing of MdMYBS1 repressed, β-branch carotenoids synthesis and ABA accumulation. MdMYBS1 regulates carotenoid biosynthesis by directly activating the major carotenoid biosynthetic genes encoding phytoene synthase (MdPSY2-1) and lycopene β-cyclase (MdLCYb). 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase 1 (MdNCED1) contributes to ABA biosynthesis, and MdMYBS1 enhances endogenous ABA accumulation by activating the MdNCED1 promoter. In addition, the basic leucine zipper domain transcription factor ABSCISIC ACID-INSENSITIVE5 (MdABI5) was identified as an upstream activator of MdMYBS1, which promotes carotenoid and ABA accumulation. Furthermore, ABA promotes carotenoid biosynthesis and enhances MdMYBS1 and MdABI5 promoter activities. Our findings demonstrate that the MdABI5-MdMYBS1 cascade activated by ABA regulates carotenoid-derived fruit coloration and ABA accumulation in apple, providing avenues in breeding and planting for improvement of fruit coloration and quality.

In this paper, a novel binary eutectic phase change material (DA-HDL EPCM) and ternary composite phase change material (HDL-DA-CA/EG CPCM) are proposed for the temperature range of 10–20 °C and 2–8 °C. Compared with traditional ternary phase change materials (2–8 °C), CPCM has higher latent heat value and economic performance. The ternary CPCM uses dodecyl alcohol (DA) and 1,6 hexadiol (HDL) as the main eutectic phase change energy storage materials, and n-capric acid (CA) as the temperature modifier. A kind of HDL-DA-CA/EG composite phase change material (CPCM) was prepared by vacuum adsorption method, which solved the problems of low thermal conductivity and easy leakage of ternary CPCM. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermal property analyzer (TCA) and high and low temperature alternating test chamber were used to characterize the thermal properties, microstructure, thermal conductivity and cyclic stability of related PCM. Experimental results: The final ratio of CPCM is 43.61%DA + 25.6%HDL + 23.08%CA + 7.7%EG, the phase transition temperature is 2.9 °C, the latent heat of phase transition is 181.3 J/g, and the thermal conductivity is 1.90 W/mK. After 500 cycles, the phase transition temperature of CPCM has little change, and the latent heat of phase transition is 169.8 J/g, which is reduced by 6.34 %, not more than 10 %, and has good stability. Finally, the simulation application data show that CPCM has a good application prospect in fruit and vegetable cold chain logistics.

This study aimed to investigate the synergistic effect of photothermal films comprising carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in extending the shelf life of kiwifruit. Herein, a novel nanocomposite was synthesized via photothermal synergism by introducing CNPs into CNCs using ultrasonic assembly methods and the resulting composition was mixed with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to develop PVA based films. Results showed that the optimal ratio of CNPs to CNCs was 1:4 for the CNP/CNC composites. The CNPs/CNCs composites mainly bonded through hydrogen bonds and exhibited favorable thermal stability. The mechanical strength of the PVA based films added with 0.2% CNP/CNC composites improved by 79% compared with that of pure PVA films. Water vapor permeability of PVA-based films added with 0.2% CNP/CNC composites reduced by 8%, consistent with the water contact angle results. Notably, the addition of CNPs/CNCs composites to PVA films achieved superior photothermal effects, with the temperature increasing to 76.2°C during 1 min of irradiation, which is 48% higher than that of pure PVA films. Moreover, the addition of CNPs/CNCs composite to PVA films effectively reduced the weight loss and maintained the hardness, pH, and total soluble solid content of kiwifruit during storage. The addition of the CNPs/CNCs composite also delayed the decay time of kiwifruit by 3 days, presenting a novel approach for fruit preservation.

This work aimed to prepare an intelligent visual indicator film for food freshness using natural purple passion fruit peel extracts (PPPEs) as an indicator. The total anthocyanin content in the PPPEs was 3.27 ± 0.07 g/100 g DW, and it showed excellent pH-responsive behavior in the pH range of 6–7. To explore the application of PPPEs in intelligent films, bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNFs) were incorporated with chitosan (CS) and chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQAS), respectively, as the film matrixes. The effects of different initial pH values of the film solution on the film properties were systematically investigated. The SEM results showed that PPPEs were well dispersed in the film-forming matrixes. The PPPEs/BCNFs/CS pH 2.0 films exhibited good tensile strength (11.97 MPa), with the most sensitive pH color changes and the change in ΔE value of the films was < 5 for the color stability. As the acidity of the film solution increased, the films showed a more sensitive response to the pH change. The PPPEs/BCNFs/CS pH 2.0 films had obvious color changes with the storage of shrimp, which could accurately indicate the freshness, sub-freshness and spoilage status of shrimp. This study demonstrated that the PPPEs exhibited potential for use in the development of intelligent food freshness indicator films.

Pomegranate is very favored but highly susceptible to lead contamination that threatens consumer health, and thereby it is essential to establish efficient modes to monitor lead level in pomegranate. A specific and sensitive electrochemical sensor was developed for assessing lead pollution in pomegranate based on Pb 2+ -dependent DNAzyme as recognition receptor and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for signal output. Particularly, the used MOFs exhibited Fenton-like catalytic functions toward methylene blue (MB) as electroactive medium. Integrating with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), the Fenton-like MOFs showed high sensitivity for electrochemical detection of Pb 2+ in pomegranate. Moreover, benefiting from the specific recognition of DNAzyme to Pb 2+ , the adjustable strategy was achieved, in which the approaching MB led to a higher signal with the absence of Pb 2+ while the detached MB gave rise to a lower signal with the presence of Pb 2+ . With the use of Fenton-like catalytic MOFs driving electrochemical aptasensing interface, this simplified detection pattern was endowed with sensitive assessment of lead pollution level in pomegranate, highlighting its promising potential in evaluating the safety of foodstuffs.
