UV/Fe2+/peracetic acid (PAA) as an efficient and novel advanced oxidation system was reported to produce reactive species (i.e., hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and organic radicals) for triclosan (TCS) degradation, which is a representative of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs). The effects of initial pH, PAA dosage and common water matrix on TCS degradation were investigated. The results indicated that 1 μmol L−1 TCS was completely removed within 10 min at an optimum initial pH of 3.5, Fe2+ dosage of 10 μmol L−1, PAA dosage of 1 mmol L−1 and temperature of 25 °C. The presence of HCO3− and natural organic matter (NOM) showed obviously negative effect on TCS degradation, while NO3− strongly promoted the destruction of TCS. According to the detected nine reaction products, the probable degradation pathways of TCS by UV/Fe2+/PAA were proposed including ether bond cleavage, hydroxylation, dechlorination, dechlorination–hydroxylation and dehydrogenation.

Fenton oxidation technology can generate highly reactive free radicals through a series of processes and is widely used for advanced mineralization treatment of industrial wastewater. However, its oxidation rate is limited by the regeneration of Fe 2+ . This research was based on the Fenton principle and combined with electrochemistry to develop a ferric ion recycling system using discarded stainless steel as the cathode. This system regenerates Fe 2+ through electrochemical reduction, catalyzes hydrogen peroxide to produce hydroxyl radicals, and then degrades pollutants. Results show that after filling the cathode with stainless steel scrap, its electrochemical active area reaches 2633 cm 2 . At a current density of 0.6 mA cm −2 and an influent flow rate of 80 mL min −1 , the regeneration efficiency of iron ions reaches 83 % within 70 min, with a current efficiency of 93 % and energy consumption of 8.21 × 10 −4 kWh g −1 Fe 2+ . After adding hydrogen peroxide at a COD:H 2 O 2 ratio of 1:1.5, the electrochemical system could remove 97 % of phenol and 90 % of COD, with an energy consumption of 4.21 × 10 −5 kWh g −1 COD. The reaction mechanism of the electrochemical system was verified through electrochemical analysis and quenching experiments. Results indicate that the direct oxidative degradation effect of the electrode on pollutants is minimal, and the degradation of pollutants primarily originates from the oxidation of • OH, which is generated by the Fenton reaction catalyzed by Fe 2+ . The electrochemical system developed in this study exhibits high stability, enabling the effective degradation of pollutants while achieving the resource utilization of metal waste and iron sludge. This provides technical support for its industrial application.

The doping of impurity ions into perovskite lattices has been scrupulously developed as a promising method to stabilize the crystallographic structure and modulate the optoelectronic properties. However, the photoluminescence (PL) of Fe2+-doped mixed halide perovskite NCs is still relatively unexplored. In this work, the Fe2+-doped CsPb(ClxBr1−x)3nanocrystals (NCs) are prepared by a hot injection method. In addition, their optical absorption, photoluminescence (PL), PL lifetimes, and photostabilities are compared with those of undoped CsPb(Br1−xClx)3NCs. We find the Fe2+doping results in the redshift of the absorption edge and PL. Moreover, the full width at half maximums (FWHMs) are decreased, PL quantum yields (QYs) are improved, and PL lifetimes are extended, suggesting the defect density is reduced by the Fe2+doping. Moreover, the photostability is significantly improved after the Fe2+doping. Therefore, this work reveals that Fe2+doping is a very promising approach to modulate the optical properties of mixed halide perovskite NCs.

Behaviours of the free radicals during the methylene blue (MB) oxidation process in the Fe2+/H2O2 system were studied to reveal the reason for the low utilization efficiency of H2O2. The roles of O2−∙, ∙OH and HO2∙ radicals were proven to be different in the MB oxidation process. The results showed that O2−∙ radicals had a strong ability to oxidize MB; however, they were not the main active substances for MB degradation due to the low concentration in the traditional Fe2+/H2O2 system. HO2∙ radicals could not oxidize MB. ∙OH radicals were the main active substances for MB oxidation. In the short initial stage, the utilization efficiency of H2O2 was high, because the generation rate of ∙OH was much higher than that of HO2∙. More ∙OH radicals were involved in the MB oxidation reaction. In the long deceleration stage (after the short initial stage), a large amount of H2O2 was consumed, but the amount of oxidized MB was very small. Most of the ∙OH radicals were consumed via the rapid useless reaction between ∙OH and HO2∙ in this stage, resulting in the serious useless consumption of H2O2. It is a feasible method to improve the utilization efficiency of H2O2 by adding suitable additives into the Fe2+/H2O2 system to weaken the useless reaction between ∙OH and HO2∙.

The development of rechargeable Mg-based batteries with a high energy density is restricted by the high-voltage cathodes and the parasitic side reactions between the battery components and electrolytes operating at relatively high potentials. Here, we develop a hybrid Mg2+/Li+ cell using a monoclinic or orthorhombic Fe2(MoO4)3 cathode, a Mg anode, and a simple (PhMgCl)2–AlCl3 + LiCl electrolyte. Hastelloy-C alloy is proposed as a current collector of high-voltage cathode for the hybrid Mg2+/Li+ battery within a Swagelok-type cell. The application of the Hastelloy-C alloy current collector breaks the crucial bottleneck of incompatibility between the currently available current collectors and electrolytes. The hybrid cell features a low voltage polarization between the discharge and charge profiles, which is in favor of practical applications. On the other hand, because all Li+ ions are supplied by the electrolyte in a hybrid Mg2+/Li+ battery, a high Li+ concentration is required to operate at high capacities for the hybrid battery. We further show the first-hand evidence about the compensation of Li+ ions by simply soaking the cathode in the hybrid electrolyte. The prelithiation of Li+ ions into monoclinic Fe2(MoO4)3 significantly enhances the cycling stability and reversibility.

Photocatalytic production of H 2 O 2 has garnered significant attention, but the use of sacrificial reagents in H 2 O 2 photosynthesis and the subsequent limited H 2 O 2 activation efficiency would impede its practical application in water decontamination. In this work, hydrothermal carbonaceous carbon/NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) (abbreviated as HTC-cf/NMIL-101(Fe)) heterojunction was fabricated through a solvothermal strategy, and serving as a self-sufficient photo-Fenton-like catalyst to in-situ generate and activate H 2 O 2 . Hydrothermal carbonaceous carbon derived from cost-effective waste coffee grounds, serving as a green and sustainable photocatalyst, demonstrated high H 2 O 2 production rate of 612 μmol/g/h without the need for sacrificial reagents or aeration assistance. Moreover, the excellent self-sufficient photo-Fenton activity for HTC-cf/NMIL-101(Fe) can be obtained, which ascribed to the synergistic effect of self-generated H 2 O 2 production as well as the in-situ catalytic H 2 O 2 decomposition of • OH by Fe species in NMIL-101(Fe) and photogenerated electrons. The optimized HTC-cf/NMIL-101(Fe) photocatalyst showed simultaneous improvements in both H 2 O 2 production and activation capabilities. Impressively, the effective circulation of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ in NMIL-101(Fe), aided by photogenerated electrons, results in a 5-fold increase toward H 2 O 2 decomposition rate constant (K d ) compared to HTC-cf alone under light irradiation in open-air conditions. The enhanced charge separation and appropriate band structure of HTC-cf/NMIL-101(Fe) photocatalyst assured the high selectivity of two-electron O 2 -reduction to H 2 O 2 . HTC-cf/NMIL-101(Fe) displayed excellent photocatalytic sterilization efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus under visible light, and its sterilization application in actual water was also demonstrated. Notably, the adaptability of this system to ambient conditions, including open-air atmosphere, non-sacrificial reagents, and low leaching of Fe ions, highlights the promising practical utility of the HTC-cf/NMIL-101(Fe) photocatalyst.

The harmful impact of organic pollutants on aquatic ecosystems underscores the pressing need for effective remediation. While activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with Fe catalyst offers a promising approach for eliminating these pollutants, its widespread use is hindered by the sluggish regeneration of Fe 2+ from Fe 3+ . Here, this study demonstrates for the first time that combining an Fe catalyst with Mo 2 C (Fe-Mo 2 C) enhances the Fe³⁺/Fe 2 ⁺ cycle, thereby improving PMS activation. The Fe-Mo 2 C/PMS system achieved near-complete degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) within only 8 minutes, with an impressive observed rate constant ( k obs ) of up to 0.624 min -1 , about 15 times greater than that of Fe-C catalyst. It also exhibits the capability to degrade a broad range of common antibiotics, phenols, and dye-like organic compounds. Through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching experiments, it was verified that hydroxyl radicals (·OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 ·- ), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) species during the reaction, with the former three serving as the primary active species. These findings offer a hopeful avenue for the systematic development and enhancement of catalysts specifically designed to efficiently remediate organic pollutants in wastewater.

The low efficiency of transforming ferric ion (Fe 3+ ) to ferrous ion (Fe 2+ ) always challenges the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by (Fe 2+ ) processes in the degradation of micro-organic contaminants. In this study, molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) which accelerated PMS activation and the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycle through the reaction of Mo 4+ and Fe 3+ was employed to significantly improve the efficiency of Fe 2+ /PMS on sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. Through the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments, both sulfate and hydroxyl radicals have been proven to account for SMX degradation in the MoS 2 /Fe 2+ /PMS process. The optimal pH of 3 has been determined for SMX degradation in the process, and an equation to express the relationship between the rate of SMX degradation and the dosages of Fe 2+ , MoS 2 and PMS was simulated. Chloride ion and humic acid had positive and negative effects on the process, respectively, whereas nitrate and bicarbonate had no influences on SMX degradation. Through the identified intermediates by LC/MS, a transformation pathway of SMX in the MoS 2 /Fe 2+ /PMS process was proposed. Additionally, the good efficiency of SMX degradation (>80%) in real water matrices and good stability of MoS 2 after reuse for 6 times further suggest that the MoS 2 /Fe 2+ /PMS process can be effectively used to degrade SMX.

Cefixime (CFX), a widely used antibiotic, has become a challenge for the treatment of antibiotic pollution in water bodies. In this study, the performance and mechanism of microbubbling plasma (MBP) combined with ferrous ions (Fe 2+ ) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxodisulfate (PDS) in degrading CFX were compared. The effects of the dosages of PMS/PDS and Fe 2+ , plasma discharge voltage, and gas flow rate on the degradation efficiency were investigated systematically. Under optimal conditions, the degradation rate of CFX reached 90.75 %, which was significantly higher than that of MBP alone (a 27.81 % increase) and the MBP/PDS system (a 23.76 % increase), indicating a high degree of synergy among MBP, Fe 2+ , and PMS. The energy efficiency of this system was as high as 1.95 g/kWh. Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and total organic carbon analysis indicated that the addition of PMS and Fe 2+ promoted the degradation and mineralization of CFX. The detection of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species combined with radical scavenging experiments confirmed that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 · − ) were the most important active species in the degradation process. Based on the results of a liquid-chromatography–mass-spectrometry analysis, three main CFX degradation pathways were identified. In addition, the toxicities of CFX and its degradation intermediates were evaluated using toxicity assessment software. This study provides a new plasma-based method for the degradation of CFX, which has value as a reference for the future treatment of antibiotic-polluted water bodies.

Groundwater table fluctuation during natural and anthropogenic processes can facilitate the interaction between oxygen (O 2 ) from the unsaturated zone and ferrous iron (Fe 2+ ) from the saturated zone. In light of previous findings that Fe(III)-reducing bacteria can be killed by the reactive oxidants produced from Fe 2+ oxidation under static oxic conditions, we hypothesize that Fe(III)-reducing bacteria will be attenuated during groundwater table fluctuations. To test this hypothesis, this study explored the variations of cell numbers of Shewanella oneidensis strain MR-1 (MR-1), a typical strain of Fe(III)-reducing bacteria, together with dissolved oxygen (DO) and Fe 2+ , at different points during controlled groundwater table fluctuations in a sand column. The results showed that, during the rise of the water table, O 2 in the pore air was entrapped by the deoxygenated groundwater, and Fe 2+ in the groundwater was oxidized by the entrapped O 2 . In this process, 1.40–2.42 orders of magnitude of viable MR-1 cells were killed at different points in the column. Further investigation proposed that the death of MR-1 is caused by the production of intracellular reactive oxidants, such as O 2 • − and OH•, from the oxidation of adsorbed/absorbed Fe 2+ instead of by bulk reactive oxidants, such as OH• and Fe(IV), produced from the oxidation of aqueous Fe 2+ . The findings here provide new insights for Fe biogeochemical cycling in the redox-dynamic zone.

By-product ozone emission is one of the challenges for applying dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) technology for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal. In this study, a DBD reactor followed by a wet scrubber (WS) containing a solution of metal ions (Fe 2+ /Mn 2+ /Cu 2+ ) was used to reuse ozone for further oxidation of typical VOC toluene. Compared with the degradation effect of the DBD reactor alone, DBD coupled WS/iron system not only improved the toluene removal efficiency but also significantly reduced the ozone emission. The ozone removal efficiency reached as high as 98% in the DBD coupled WS/Fe 2+ system. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests showed that ozone was converted into radicals such as hydroxyl radicals in Fe 2+ and Cu 2+ solution, which further oxidized toluene in WS/iron. Quenching experiments showed that the contribution for toluene degradation by radicals was up to 75% and 62% in Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ reactor, respectively. This study demonstrates that the DBD coupled WS system has the potential to be an environmentally friendly technology for gaseous VOCs removal.

Fe ions, as one of the unavoidable metal ions, are present in flotation pulp as ferric and ferrous species, and the effect of ferric species on the flotation behavior of sulfide minerals has been widely discussed in the above literatures. However, the effect of ferrous species has rarely been noticed. In this paper, the effect of ferrous species on the flotation behavior and surface characteristics of galena was investigated by using microflotation, zeta potential measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Microflotation tests indicated that the flotation recovery of galena with potassium butyl xanthate (KBX) as collector was significantly decreased with the addition of Fe2+ in the pulp, and the recovery was further decreased with increasing dosage of Fe2+. In addition, the finer the galena particles, the greater the decrease in flotation recovery. Zeta potential analysis illustrated that the isoelectric point (IEP) was shifted from 4.4 to 5.8 due to the adsorption of ferrous hydroxyl complexes on the galena surface and the zeta potential. XPS surface analysis suggested that the surface oxidation of galena was alleviated by the consumption of O2 in the pulp, which reduced the adsorption of the collector KBX on and the oxidation of xanthates to dixanthogens. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the ferrous hydroxyl complex FeOH+ could be adsorbed on the galena surface by interactions between Fe and S atoms.
