Catalytic upcycling of waste polypropylene for gram-scale production of FeCo@N-doped carbon nanotubes toward efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

Ru Hong,Qingyu Liu,Qi Cao,Jiahuan Xu,Rui Xiao,Huiyan Zhang

Exploring novel low-cost and high-efficiency non-precious metal catalysts for use in oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) is of key importance. Based on catalytic pyrolysis of waste plastics, a facile method for preparing N-doped Fe/Co-encapsulated carbon nanotubes (Fe x Co y @NCNTs) was proposed. Particularly, gram-scale yield of the composite catalyst (3.87 g) was achieved in one pot with considerable atomic conversion rate of carbon (∼57.3 %) from waste polypropylene to high-quality CNTs, suggesting great potential for waste plastics valorization. The effects of Fe-to-Co ratios were studied by testing the ORR performance of each sample, indicating that as the Fe proportion increased, the ORR performance initially increased and then decreased. The Fe1Co1@NCNTs catalyst showed optimal performance which was comparable with commercial Pt/C catalyst: Particularly, an initial potential of 0.97 V vs RHE, a half-wave potential of 0.81 V vs RHE, and a limiting current density of –5.68 mA cm −2 were recorded. The encapsulated Fe and Co species in N-doped CNTs enhanced catalytic activity, while the porous carbon structure augmented the exposure of active sites. This strategy offers an auspicious platform for reusing waste plastics in the mass production of CNTs, and also provides an innovative approach for preparing low-cost, high-performance, and non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for ORRs.

Ionic liquid-derived FeCo alloys encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon framework as advanced bifunctional catalysts for rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Zhenzhen Wang,Xiaozhuang Zhou,Huihui Jin,Ding Chen,Jiawei Zhu,Rolf Hempelmann,Lei Chen,Shichun Mu

Developing bifunctional ORR&OER electrocatalysts with high activity and stability is challenging for practical application of rechargeable Zinc air batteries. Herein, an ionic liquid strategy is proposed for construction of FeCo alloys encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon as bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). By taking advantages of the unique properties such as solvent effect and low volatility, ionic liquid serves as solvent to disperse metal ions in the precursor preparation and nitrogen-containing carbon source during pyrolysis. The FeCo alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in the N-doped carbon matrix show a homogeneous distribution with average sizes of 50–100 nm. Such a core-shell structure endows the catalyst with both high ORR and OER activity and robust stability in alkaline environments. Especially, the half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) for ORR is 0.86 V and the overpotential (E over ) for OER to reach the 10 mA·cm −2 current density is only 280 mV. Furthermore, the obtained bifunctional electrocatalyst also displays high efficiency and great durability when applied in the rechargeable Zn-air battery. The specific capacity and energy density at the discharge current density of 10 mA·cm −2 reach up to 741.5 mAh·g −1 and 830.1 Wh kg −1 , respectively. It’s envisioned that this ultra-facile method would be applicable to synthesize highly efficient catalysts for other energy conversion systems.

Interface engineering of FeCo-Co structure as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries via alloying degree control strategy

Lianghao Song,Jing Zhang,Samrat Sarkar,Chenfei Zhao,Zhenwei Wang,Chengyu Huang,Liuming Yan,Yufeng Zhao

High performance zinc-air batteries (ZABs) demand highly active bifunctional catalysts for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). Herein, we report a FeCo-Co bifunctional catalyst with well-engineered interfaces between FeCo nanoalloy and metallic Co, via an alloying-degree control strategy. The FeCo-Co architecture can be obtained by manipulating the alloying degree through proper introduction of Fe, while the stacked carbon nanosheet morphology inherited from the precursor can fully expose the active sites facilitating the ion transfer. FeCo-Co interface structure enables FeCo@Co/N-C-8 catalyst to exhibit an excellent half-wave potential (0.870 V) superior to Pt/C (0.846 V) for ORR and suppressed overpotential (312 mV) than IrO 2 (321 mV) for OER. The as prepared rechargeable ZAB based on FeCo@Co/N-C-8 catalyst displays an excellent peak power density of 148 mW cm −2 and an ultrahigh open circuit voltage of 1.52 V. This research provides an innovative technique in construction of bifunctional catalysts for ZABs through alloying degree control strategies.

PBA@PPy derived N-doped mesoporous carbon nanocages embedded with FeCo alloy nanoparticles for enhanced performance of oxygen reduction reaction

Yusheng Li,Yun Feng,Li Li,Keyan Wu,Xiangjie Bo,Jianbo Jia,Liande Zhu

Due to the obstacle of sluggish kinetics on cathode of fuel cells and metal–air batteries, developing low-cost and durable electrocatalysts to replace the platinum-based catalysts still remains a grand challenge. Here, we describe a simple self-template approach to synthesize N-doped mesoporous carbon nanocages (FeCo@NC) embedded with FeCo alloy nanoparticles as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst. The resulting heterostructure is derived from corresponding PBA@PPy composites, which are pre-prepared by polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy) layer on Prussian blue analogue (PBA) nanocubes. The FeCo alloy nanoparticles with an average particle size of ∼10 nm are well dispersed and confined within the shell of carbon nanocages. Benefiting from the mesoporous structure and the synergetic interaction of binary metals, the optimized FeCo@NC-3-800 electrocatalyst exhibits comparable ORR performances (0.83 V for half-wave potential (E 1/2 ), 5.323 mA cm −2 for limiting current density (J k )), superior durability and excellent methanol tolerance to the commercial Pt/C (20 wt%). This work provides an appropriate strategy for general, efficient and practical synthesis of more promising non-precious metal electrocatalyst with high ORR activity.

Hierarchical peony-like FeCo-NC with conductive network and highly active sites as efficient electrocatalyst for rechargeable Zn-air battery

Wang Yiyan,Kumar Anuj,Ma Mang,Jia Yin,Wang Yu,Zhang Ying,Zhang Guoxin,Sun Xiaoming,Yan Zifeng

Carbon materials featuring hierarchical pores and atomically dispersed metal sites are promising catalysts for energy storage and conversion applications. Herein, we developed a facile strategy to construct functional carbon materials with a fluffy peony-like structure and dense binary FeCo-N x active sites (termed as f-FeCo-CNT). By regulating the metal content in precursors, a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected conductive carbon nanotubes network was in-situ formed throughout the atomically dispersed FeCo-NC matrix during pyrolysis. Taking advantage of rich pore hierarchy and co-existence of highly active FeCo-N x sites and beneficial FeCo alloy nanoparticles, the f-FeCo-CNT material exhibited excellent bifunctional performance towards oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reactions (ORR/OER) with respect to the atomically dispersed FeCo-NC (SA-f-FeCo-NC) and commercial Pt/C+RuO 2 mixture, surpassing the SA-f-FeCo-NC with a 20 mV higher ORR half-wave potential and a 100 mV lower OER overpotential (at 10.0 mA/cm 2 ). Remarkably, the f-FeCo-CNT-assembled Zn-air battery (ZAB) possessed a maximum specific power of 195.8 mW/cm 2 , excellent rate capability, and very good cycling stability at large current density of 20.0 mA/cm 2 . This work provides a facile and feasible synthetic strategy of constructing low-cost cathode materials with excellent comprehensive ZAB performance.

Core-Sheath FeCo@Vertically Aligned Carbon Fiber Arrays for Integrated Ultrahigh Through-plane Thermal Conductivity and Absorption-Dominant Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Jialong Jiang,Shida Han,Yuan Ji,Hong Wu,Shaoyun Guo

The coupled problems of heat dissipation and electromagnetic compatibility need to be addressed urgently in highly miniaturized and integrated electronic devices. Herein, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composites featuring core-sheath FeCo@vertically aligned carbon fiber (VACF) arrays were prepared via magnetic field-assisted vertical alignment, combined with in-situ high-temperature growth and infiltration processes. Within the composite, the VACF arrays provide efficient phonon transport pathways in the through-plane direction, while the magnetic FeCo alloy shells function to isolate the VACF arrays, optimizing impedance matching and enhancing electromagnetic wave absorption loss. By regulating the FeCo alloy content, the through-plane thermal conductivity and total electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of the composite reached 42.03 W/(mK) and 41.6 dB, respectively, while the reflection effectiveness was only 1.5 dB. This work demonstrates the FeCo@VACF/PDMS composite that simultaneously achieves ultrahigh through-plane thermal conductivity and absorption-dominant EMI shielding, providing a novel approach to designing high-performance, multifunctional thermal interface materials.

Wenlu Yang,Jianing Guo,Jingyuan Ma,Na Wu,Jun Xiao,Mingxing Wu

Developing low-cost, high-efficiency and durable trifunctional electrocatalysts for enhancing the speed of oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution and hydrogen evolution reactions (ORR, OER and HER) is critical for expanding the industrial production and the commercial application of rechargeable Zn-air batteries and water electrolysis, but it still exists as a tremendous challenge. Herein, FeCo nanoalloys embedded into N-doped carbon nanofibers was prepared as a superior trifunctional catalyst for ORR, OER and HER by a universal and facile method. Under the synergistic effect of FeCo nanoalloys and N-doped carbon nanofibers , the Fe, Co/N-C catalyst exhibits half-wave potential of 0.86 V for ORR, and overpotentials of 388 mV and 249 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 for OER and HER, respectively. What’s more, the Zn-air battery based on Fe, Co/N-C catalyst displayed a considerable open-circuit voltage of 1.5 V and a continuous cycle life span of 210 h. Moreover, this catalyst was also used as the sole catalyst in overall water splitting to show excellent performance. This work provides an effective way to design efficient and durable multifunctional electrocatalysts, which will facilitate the development of high-performance multifunctional catalysts and their application in renewable energy applications.

An electrochemical sensing strategy for organophosphorus pesticides based on dual-enzyme synergistic catalysis of plant esterase and diatomic FeCo–NC nanozyme

Donglin Xiang,Xiao Wang,Chun Ji,Laping He,Yuangen Wu,Han Tao

This study presents a novel electrochemical strategy for detecting organophosphorus pesticides based on the synergistic catalytic of red kidney bean esterase (RKBE) and iron–cobalt dual-atom catalyst embedded in N-doped carbon carrier (FeCo–NC). RKBE was extracted from the widely cultivated British red kidney beans ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) . FeCo–NC exhibited excellent electrocatalytic and peroxidase-like activity, catalyzing o -phenylenediamine oxidation to produce electroactive 2,3-diaminophenazine, which served as signal probe generating a sensitive cathodic current. Notably, RKBE product 1-naphthol inhibited FeCo–NC activity, while organophosphorus pesticides counteracted this inhibition by suppressing RKBE activity, restoring the electrochemical signal of 2,3-diaminophenazine. Leveraging this signal-regulation mechanism, a dichlorvos sensor was developed, with wide linear range (50–50,000 pM), low detection limit (14 pM), and excellent real-sample recovery (93.33%–107.08%), demonstrating practical application potential. This study provides an affordable and easy-to-operate approach for large-scale on-site monitoring of organophosphorus pesticide residues in foods.

Alloy-Single Atom Synergy: FeCo Nanoparticles Modulating FeNx Sites for Enhanced Bifunctional Oxygen Catalysis in Ultrastable (3000+ h) Zinc-Air Batteries

Zhenzhen Wu,Xiaoyu Wu,Wenting Liu,Songfeng Liang,Jiaming Luo,Mengyang Li,Yang Wang

Zinc-air batteries, widely regarded as a frontrunner in sustainable energy storage solutions, struggle with performance constraints stemming from the insufficient activity and durability of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. This research presents a composite catalyst (FeCo@Fe-N-CNTs) synthesized through a straightforward in situ growth method, effectively integrating FeCo alloys with Fe single atoms incorporated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs). Theoretical and experimental studies show that FeNx atoms weaken the interaction between active iron sites and reactants, enhancing the reaction energy optimization. The optimization improves the characteristics of the intermediates’ adsorption and desorption, enabling the catalyst to exhibit remarkable bifunctional activity under alkaline conditions, achieving an overall overpotential as low as 0.67 V, with overpotential of merely 290 mV for the oxygen evolution process. The performance boost stems from a 38% larger electrochemical surface area (ECSA) combined with an 18% lower charge transfer resistance (Rct), pointing to gains in both active site numbers and intrinsic catalytic efficiency. We also employed X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and in situ Raman measurements to probe the Fe–Nx bonding configuration and track how the surface changes under the working conditions. Notably, zinc-air batteries using dual-function catalyst reached a peak energy density of 894 mAh g–1, maintained stable cycling for over 3000 h, and exhibited consistent charge–discharge capabilities in flexible quasi-solid-state devices (with voltage fluctuation remaining under 5% during bending strain), highlighting its immense potential for practical use in creating compact, high-capacity rechargeable batteries that can be worn or carried around. It is like giving us the keys to unlock a world where we can seamlessly incorporate portable energy solutions for renewable energy projects.

Facile pyrolysis synthesis of abundant FeCo dual-single atoms anchored on N-doped carbon nanocages for synergistically boosting oxygen reduction reaction

Rui Feng,Qi-Dong Ruan,Jiu-Ju Feng,You-Qiang Yao,Lin-Mei Li,Lu Zhang,Ai-Jun Wang

Single-atom transition metal-based nitrogen-doped carbon (M−N x −C) is regarded as high-efficiency and cost-effectiveness alternatives to replace noble metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in renewable energy storage and conversion devices. In this work, rich FeCo dual-single atoms were efficiently entrapped into N -doped carbon nanocages (FeCo DSAs-NCCs) by simple pyrolysis of the bimetallic precursors doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), as affirmed by a series of characterizations. The graphitization degree of the N -doping carbon substrate was regulated by modulating the pyrolysis temperature and the types of the metal salts. The typical catalyst substantially improved the alkaline ORR performance, with the onset potential ( E onset ) of 0.99 V ( vs . RHE) and half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) of 0.88 V ( vs . RHE). Ultimately, the catalyst-assembled Zn-air battery possessed a higher open-circuit voltage of 1.501 V, larger power density of 123.7 mW cm −2 , and outstanding durability for 150 h. This study provides a guide on developing ORR catalysts for electrochemical energy conversion and storage technology.

Insight into the role of heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst FeCo-γ-Al2O3 with dual electron-rich centers for Ni-EDTA removal

Zilong Zhao,Shuyu Qi,Jianli Zhou,Yatao Ren,Kaiyun Zheng,Jin Zhang,Wenyi Dong,Hongjie Wang

To enhance the polarization distribution of electron cloud density on the catalyst surface, we have introduced a novel bimetallic-substituted dual-reaction center (DRC) catalyst (FeCo-γ-Al 2 O 3 ) comprising iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co) for the decomplexation and mineralization of heavy metal complex Ni-EDTA in this study. Compared to the catalysts doped solely with Fe or Co, the bimetal-doped catalyst offered several advantages, including enhanced electron cloud polarization distribution, additional electron transfer pathway, and improved capacity of free radical generation. Through DFT calculations and EPR tests, we have elucidated the influences of the catalyst's adsorption toward Ni-EDTA and its decomplexation products on the electron transfer between the pollutant and the catalyst. The competition between the pollutants and H 2 O 2 affects the generation of free radicals in both electron-rich Fe and Co centers as well as electron-deficient Al center. Building on these findings, we have proposed a plausible removal mechanism of Ni-EDTA using the heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst FeCo-γ-Al 2 O 3 . This study sheds light on the potential of FeCo-γ-Al 2 O 3 as a DRC catalyst and emphasizes the significance of pollutant characteristics in determining the catalyst's performance.

Structural design of asymmetric gradient alternating multilayered CNF/MXene/FeCo@rGO composite film for efficient and enhanced absorbing electromagnetic interference shielding

Meng Ma,Wenqin Shao,Qindan Chu,Wenting Tao,Si Chen,Yanqin Shi,Huiwen He,Yulu Zhu,Xu Wang

With the strong support of the government for emerging technology industries, electromagnetic waves have brought convenience to people's lives, but also become an undeniable new source of pollution. Therefore, it is vital to develop new high-performance electromagnetic shielding materials. Herein, we designed a well-structured asymmetrical gradient multilayer composite film by constructing a controllable electromagnetic gradient. Using cellulose nanofibers as the matrix, a layer-by-layer filtration method was used to rationally distribute FeCo@rGO and MXene fillers to build an ordered multilayer structure that provides alternating conductive and magnetic gradients. Owing to gradient absorption shielding and reflection mechanisms for electromagnetic waves within the film layer, the EMI shielding efficiency (EMI SE) of the asymmetrical gradient alternating six-layer composite film reached 45.2 dB (X-band), and the reflection coefficient was reduced to 0.71 when 20 wt% filler was added. In addition, this composite film has good thermal conductivity and mechanical properties, exhibiting thermal conductivity of 2.90 W (m−1 K−1) and tensile strength of 26.2 MPa. This strategy provides a feasible approach for designing electromagnetic shielding composite materials with adjustable electromagnetic properties and has significant practical significance in expanding the application of MXene-based composite materials.
