Efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts are highly required for the cost-effective generation of clean energy from water splitting. For the first time, an integrated OER electrode based on one-step direct growth of metallic iron–nickel sulfide nanosheets on FeNi alloy foils (denoted as Fe Ni 3 S 2 /FeNi) is reported, and the origin of the enhanced OER activity is uncovered in combination with theoretical and experimental studies. The obtained Fe Ni 3 S 2 /FeNi electrode exhibits highly catalytic activity and long-term stability toward OER in strong alkaline solution, with a low overpotential of 282 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 54 mV dec −1 . The excellent activity and satisfactory stability suggest that the as-made electrode provides an attractive alternative to noble metal-based catalysts. Combined with density functional theory calculations, exceptional OER performance of Fe Ni 3 S 2 /FeNi results from a combination of efficient electron transfer properties, more active sites, the suitable O 2 evolution kinetics and energetics benefited from Fe doping. This work not only simply constructs an excellent electrode for water oxidation, but also provides a deep understanding of the underlying nature of the enhanced OER performance, which may serve as a guide to develop highly effective and integrated OER electrodes for water splitting.

Exploring efficient and durable non-noble metal catalysts toward oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) is of practical significance in advancing Zn-air batteries. Herein, we introduce a three-dimensional (3D) bifunctional electrocatalyst (Fe/Ni@NSC) consisting of N, S-dual doped mesoporous carbon nanosheets/carbon nanotubes embedded with abundant FeS/FeNi nanoparticles and Fe/Ni-N x sites by integrating rod-like ZIF-L@S-g-C 3 N 4 with Fe/Ni-phen complex and subsequent pyrolysis. The 3D structure not only offers a high surface area for active sites but also accelerates O 2 transport/charge transfer. Leveraging the synergistic effect of the 3D porous carbon network and multiple active sites, Fe/Ni@NSC exhibited outstanding activities in both ORR (half-wave potential, 0.868 V) and OER (overpotential, 317 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), indicating a low potential gap of 0.679 V, outperforming the Pt/C + RuO 2 benchmarks (0.695 V). The Zn-air batteries based on Fe/Ni@NSC achieved a promising open circuit voltage (1.47 V), peak power density (172.59 mW cm −2 ), as well as long-term cycling stability (370 h). Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations also demonstrated that the interfacial electronic interaction between FeS and FeNi effectively boosted the bifunctional catalytic performance for ORR/OER. This study lays the foundation for designing low-cost and efficient 3D structure non-noble metal catalysts for more energy conversion and storage devices.

In this work, an in-situ growth of metal coordination-synergistic imprinted polymer onto magnetic FeNi biochar was synthesized and further used for the recognition and isolation of toxic monocrotaline (Mct) from herbal medicines. The shrimp shell-derived iron nickel oxide doped magnetic biochar (INOMB) was successfully prepared by a combined impregnation and pyrolysis method. The molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) layer was then in-situ coated onto the surface of the INOMB carrier by the incipient metal coordination interaction between Mct and bimetallic Fe/Ni elements, and dopamine self-autoxidation process. The obtained FeNi@Mct-MIPs was systematically characterized through various characterization techniques. Profiting from the synergistic effect , the synthesized FeNi@Mct-MIPs obviously enhanced the adsorption capacity in capturing Mct, and the maximum adsorption capacity and imprinting factor were determined as 64.59 mg g −1 and 2.16 accordingly. Furthermore, the resultant FeNi@Mct-MIPs composite can be further used as a novel solid-phase extraction absorbent to enrich and detect trace Mct in herbal plants by using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrum (UHPLC-MS) technology. Overall, the present INOMB-based composite shows great potential for selective separation and detection of Mct from traditional Chinese medicine samples.

Optimizing dense insulating shells plays a crucial role in developing high-frequency soft magnetic composites (SMCs) working in acidic and salty environments. Herein, raspberry-like and litchi-like SiO 2 shells are fabricated on FeNi particles by using both 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) and tetraethyl orthosilicate. It is found that low dosages of APTES lead to raspberry-like shells consisting of internal SiO 2 layer and attached SiO 2 particles. While high dosages of APTES result in litchi-like shells, owing to a much higher coordinated growth rate between the inner layer and SiO 2 particles. With regard to corrosion resistance performance, the litchi-like shell contributes to a more positive corrosion potential of -0.076 V, a lower corrosion current density of 2.512 × 10 −6 A/cm 2 , a higher corrosion protection efficiency of 96.70 % and a lower ion concentration in the HCl etching solution. As for magnetic properties, higher resistivity of 1.46 × 10 8 Ω·m, lower eddy current loss with μ′ of 13.98 and lower tan δ of 0.01148 at 2000 kHz can be realized by the dense litchi-like shell structure. This work not only demonstrates detailed growth mechanisms of different SiO 2 shells, provides FeNi SMCs with desirable high frequency and anti-corrosion performance, but also offers deeper insights into functional shell design.

Although FeNi intermetallic compounds (IMCs) are promising pre-catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their ability to in-situ form a stable Ni 1-x Fe x OOH active layer, their activity is ultimately limited by the saturation of Fe 3+ incorporation into the lattice. To overcome this limitation, we introduce CeO 2 as an external electron regulator to construct a carbon-coated heterostructure (C@CeO 2 /FeNi). At the interface, CeO 2 acts as an electron pump, working synergistically with Fe 3+ to enable deep electronic modulation of the self-deposited active layer, thereby breaking through the performance ceiling of FeNi IMCs. The optimal C@CeO 2 /FeNi-0.3 catalyst achieves a low overpotential of only 211 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 and a small Tafel slope of 54 mV dec -1 in 1.0 M KOH, significantly surpassing its CeO 2 -free counterpart. In addition, it exhibits remarkable stability: after continuous electrolysis for 100 hours at overpotentials of 230 and 350 mV, the activity of this material decays by only 10% and 8.3%, respectively. This work demonstrates that interfacial electron-pump engineering is an effective strategy to push the performance boundaries of alloy-based OER catalysts.

Upcycling carbon materials from waste plastics/resins is of utmost importance but remains challenging. In this work, we reported the production of magnetic metal nanoparticle-doped laser-induced graphene (LIG/M) starting from polybenzoxazine by a combination of drop-casting and laser irradiation. This strategy was applicable to convert various metal complex precursors into nanoparticles, producing diverse LIG/M, where M included Fe3O4, FeCo, and FeNi. Due to the attractive porous structures and electric/magnetic functional characteristics, the obtained LIG/M exhibited a high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of 39.1 dB in the X-band for LIG/FeCo. Taking the thickness and lightweight properties into account, the absolute shielding effectiveness of LIG/M is superior to that of the reported metal nanoparticle-doped carbon materials, which demonstrates the advantage of LIG/M as efficient EMI shielding materials. Moreover, the high electrical conductivity and magnetic properties endowed LIG/M with low-voltage-driven electrothermal performance and strong magnetothermal effect. Given the easy-fabrication process and satisfactory performance, the strategy proposed in this work may create propitious opportunities to achieve the high value-added upcycling and reuse of waste plastics/resins with potential applications in various fields, such as EMI shielding, energy storage, and heating systems.

In-situ growth of N-doped bamboo-like carbon nanotubes embedded with FeNi nanoparticles on carbon cloth (FeNi@NBCNTs/CC) is reported and direct application of FeNi@NBCNTs/CC as self-standing bifunctional air cathodes in rechargeable zinc-air batteries (RZABs) is demonstrated. The resulting FeNi@NBCNTs/CC with 3D integrated conductive frameworks, large suface area and hierarchically porous architecture as well as embedded FeNi nanoparticles can provide sufficient accessible reaction sites and optimal charge/mass transfer environment. Thus, the FeNi@NBCNTs/CC exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with a positive half-wave potential of 0.90 V and oxygen reduction reaction (OER) with a low potential of 1.52 V at 10 mA cm−2, outperforming commercial Pt/C and Ru/C catalyst, respectively. Impressively, they serve as self-standing air cathodes for liquid and flexible quasi-solid-state RZABs, illustrating outstanding battery performance with high energy density, robust durability with low rate of energy loss and favorable flexibility. This work brings a useful strategy to fabricate low-cost and efficient electrodes without using any polymeric binders and noble metal for metal air batteries and other related fields.

The integration of smartphones with conventional analytical approaches plays a crucial role in enhancing on-site detection platforms for point-of-care testing. Here, we developed a simple, rapid, and efficient three-channel colorimetric sensor array, leveraging the peroxidase (POD)-like activity of polydopamine-decorated FeNi foam (PDFeNi foam), to identify antioxidants using both microplate readers and smartphones for signal readouts. The exceptional catalytic capacity of PDFeNi foam enabled the quick catalytic oxidation of three typical peroxidase substrates (TMB, OPD and 4-AT) within 3 min. Consequently, we constructed a colorimetric sensor array with cross-reactive responses, which was successfully applied to differentiate five antioxidants (i.e., glycine (GLY), glutathione (GSH), citric acid (CA), ascorbic acid (AA), and tannic acid (TAN)) within the concentration range of 0.1–10 μM, quantitatively analyze individual antioxidants (with AA and CA as model analytes), and assess binary mixtures of AA and GSH. The practical application was further validated by discriminating antioxidants in serum samples with a smartphone for signal readout. In addition, since pesticides could be absorbed on the surface of PDFeNi foam through π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding, the active sites were differentially masked, leading to featured modulation on POD-like activity of PDFeNi foam, thereby forming the basis for pesticides discrimination on the sensor array. The nanozyme-based sensor array provides a simple, rapid, visual and high-throughput strategy for precise identification of various analytes with a versatile platform, highlighting its potential application in point-care-of diagnostic, food safety and environmental surveillance.

With the merits of high safety and energy density, all-solid-state zinc–air batteries possess potential applications in flexible and wearable electronic devices. Especially, the air cathodes with bifunctional catalytic activity, i.e. oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have been received enormous attention. In this work, we provide a novel phosphorus/nitrogen co-doped and bimetallic metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived cathode configurated with phosphorus-doped bimetallic FeNi alloys and a nitrogen-doped porous carbon layer loaded on graphene (P–FeNi/NC@G). The P–FeNi/NC@G electrode exhibits a superior OER activity with an overpotential of 310 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and an ORR performance with a half-wave potential of 0.81 V. With P–FeNi/NC@G as the air cathode, the integrated all-solid-state rechargeable zinc–air battery presents a high open-circuit voltage of 1.53 V, a high peak power density of 159 mW cm−2, a small charge–discharge voltage gap of 0.73 V at 5 mA cm−2, as well as excellent long-term stability up to 144 cycles. This work not only expands the air cathode materials database but also develops a new co-doped synthesis method that can be utilized to fabricate a cathode with promoted catalytic efficiency, resulting in improved performance for an all-solid-state zinc–air battery.

Metal–organic framework (MOFs) derived magnetic nanoparticles/porous carbon (M/C) composites featuring efficient interfacial engineering and spatially continuous three-dimensional (3D) networks are desirable electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials due to multiple transmission path and well impedance matching. However, it is challenging to construct such 3D interconnected carbon networks from a single MOF precursor. Herein, FeNi3 and N embedded 3D carbon networks comprising bamboo-like carbon nanotubes connected carbon nanorods (FeNi@CNT/CNRs) were prepared via one-step pyrolyzing of the composite of melamine and FeNi-MIL-88B. Attributed to the synergistic contributions of 3D interconnected carbon nanotube networks and MOFs derived M/C for multiple transmission path, impedance matching, and dielectric loss (especially for multiple polarization and micro-current), the FeNi@CNT/CNRs nanoarchitectures have demonstrated superior EMW absorbing performance. In particular, the optimized FeNi@CNT/CNR-0.9 has exhibited strong absorption (−47.0 dB, 2.3 mm in thickness) and broadband effective absorption (4.5 GHz, 1.6 mm in thickness). This attractive strategy holds promise as a general approach to fabricate the carbon hybrid network constituted of MOFs derived nanopolyhedron and CNTs for the target application.
