Visible Light Assisted Heterogeneous Fenton-Like Degradation of Organic Pollutant via α-FeOOH/Mesoporous Carbon Composites

Xufang Qian,Meng Ren,Yao Zhu,Dongting Yue,Yu Han,Jinping Jia,Yixin Zhao

A novel α-FeOOH/mesoporous carbon (α-FeOOH/MesoC) composite prepared by in situ crystallization of adsorbed ferric ions within carboxyl functionalized mesoporous carbon was developed as a novel visible light assisted heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. The visible light active α-FeOOH nanocrystals were encapsulated in the mesoporous frameworks accompanying with surface attached large α-FeOOH microcrystals via C–O–Fe bonding. Assisting with visible light irradiation on α-FeOOH/MesoC, the mineralization efficiency increased owing to the photocatalytic promoted catalyzing H2O2 beyond the photothermal effect. The synergistic effect between α-FeOOH and MesoC in α-FeOOH/MesoC composite improved the mineralization efficiency than the mixture catalyst of α-FeOOH and MesoC. The iron leaching is greatly suppressed on the α-FeOOH/MesoC composite. Interestingly, the reused α-FeOOH/MesoC composites showed much higher phenol oxidation and mineralization efficiencies than the fresh catalyst and homogeneous Fenton system (FeSO4/H2O2). The XPS, XRD, FTIR, and textural property results reveal that the great enhancement comes from the interfacial emerged oxygen containing groups between α-FeOOH and MesoC after the first heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction. In summary, visible light induced photocatalysis assisted heterogeneous Fenton-like process in the α-FeOOH/MesoC composite system improved the HO• production efficiency and Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and further activated the interfacial catalytic sites, which finally realize an extraordinary higher degradation and mineralization efficiency.

Construction of a cathodic MOF/FeOOH heterojunction for boosted Fe(Ⅲ) reduction in electro-Fenton processes

Hongwei Zhu,Xu Yin,Yi Wang,Kajia Wei,Liankai Gu,Yonghao Zhang,Zhenshan Duan,Zhen Huang,Haoming Chen,Weiqing Han

This study developed a self-supported MOF/FeOOH heterojunction cathode without binders for boosted Fe(Ⅲ) reduction in heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) processes. The electron transport channels from FeOOH to in-situ grown NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) were established through the spontaneous formation of an internal electric field (IEF), which enhanced the electrical conductivity and disrupted the chemical inertness of the Fe(Ⅲ) reduction. The MOF/FeOOH cathode increased sulfamethazine (SMT) removal up to 95.76 %, 2.5 times better than using PTFE as binders. After ten-consecutive degradation experiments, the Fe(Ⅱ) content at cathode surface increased from 39.23 % to 56.73 %. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and advanced characterization techniques demonstrated the efficient Fe(Ⅲ) reduction and H 2 O 2 activation during the reaction. These results elucidate the promoting effect of modulating the “contact” between the catalyst and current collectors, as to provide a feasible and promising strategy for the development of efficient heterogeneous EF cathodes.

Graphene oxide nanofiltration membrane for efficient dye separation by β-FeOOH intercalation and dopamine surface modification

Yiling He,Siming Yan,Yi He,Jing Yu,Shuangshuang Li,Xianmin Gong,Gou Rui

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes have been extensively studied for the separation and purification of dye wastewater. Improving the stability, permeability and self-cleaning ability of these materials is urgently needed for the purification of complex dye wastewater. In this study, we developed a simple and effective method to insert ternary β-iron hydroxide (β-FeOOH) between GO nanosheets and modify the membrane surface with dopamine hydrochloride (PDA) to solve this problem. The pure water flux of the composite membrane was 9 times higher than that of the pure GO membrane (92.82 L m −2 h −1 ), and the rejection of dye molecules larger than 400 Da was consistently greater than 99 %. The PDA/GO-β-FeOOH 2 composite membrane was operated for 50 h (with xenon lamp irradiation to clean the membrane surface) with a flux of 34.98 L m −2 h −1 and a rejection rate consistently higher than 98.5 %.

Haidong Luo,Shuai Dong,Suhang Chen,Fengqi Zhao,Kangzhen Xu

Photocatalytic-Fenton synergistic degradation of pollutants in wastewater is considered a promising technology for environmental treatment. Herein, FeOOH quantum dots decorated La-doped Bi 4 O 5 I 2 hybrids were prepared using an in-situ deposition strategy and applied for the removal of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. The FeOOH-1/La 10 -Bi 4 O 5 I 2 sample exhibits the highest catalytic activity in degradation experiments, eliminating 93.8 % of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine within 30 min at a reaction rate constant of 0.117 min −1 . In addition, the impacts of several operational parameters on the catalytic activity were comprehensively examined, including H 2 O 2 concentration, catalyst dosage, reaction solution pH and co-existing ions. In degradation process of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine, the major reactive oxygen species are ·OH and ·O 2 – , with ·OH generated by Fenton reaction. Optical property characterization, cyclic voltammetry tests, and photoelectrochemical measurements confirmed that the FeOOH-1/La 10 -Bi 4 O 5 I 2 composite has excellent light absorption capacity, abundant active centers, and excellent carrier separation efficiency. Finally, the degradation mechanism of FeOOH-1/La 10 -Bi 4 O 5 I 2 composites for 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine is rationally discussed based on experimental and theoretical calculations. This study presents a fresh design idea for developing bismuth oxyhalide-based composites with high activity.

Renewable β-FeOOH nanorods modified polyvinylidene fluoride membrane enables high potable water quality: Performance and mechanisms

Zhu Xiong,Zhuoran Yi,Mahmud Sakil,Lei Huang,Zehui Wang,Xueyan Wu,Qingnan Wang,Zhu Wang,Gaosheng Zhang,Wei Zhang,Shuaifei Zhao,Lijing Zhu

To overcome conventional membrane challenges in eliminating natural organic matter (NOM) from natural water, we successfully integrated β -iron hydroxide oxide ( β -FeOOH) nanorods onto a PAA-PVDF blend membrane fabricated from poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF).Contact angle assessments with various fluids confirmed the strong organic matter adsorption property of the membrane, with a dispersion component of surface energy at 26.7 mJ/m 2 for β -FeOOH@PAA-PVDF. This membrane consistently removed over 80 % of dissolved organic matter in the cross-flow filtration of water containing 50–150 ppm fulvic acid (FA) under neutral conditions. Such remarkable performance is attributed to the interactions between the Fe-OH groups and the carbonyl (2.960 eV) and phenolic (2.864 eV) groups of FA, overcoming the size sieving limits. Under acidic conditions, zeta potential tests revealed effective ferric coagulation, resulting in over 90 % FA (50 ppm) removal. We thoroughly investigated that common cations (e.g., K + and Ca 2+ ) have impacts on FA removal using β -FeOOH@PAA-PVDF. The used membranes regained nearly original fluxes after washing with trace hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) under ultraviolet (UV) light illumination, outperforming traditional washing with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). Electron spin resonance spectrometry elucidated the cleaning mechanism of β -FeOOH@PAA-PVDF was superoxide anion radical ( O 2 − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) active species. In summary, β -FeOOH@PAA-PVDF showed a superior adsorption capacity (2200 mg/m 2 ) and efficient photocatalytic degradation towards NOM in natural water, providing an efficient cleaning technology for membrane reuse.

Synergistic Adsorption–Membrane Distillation for Heavy Metal Extraction and Water Reclamation from Saline Waste Streams

Jie Xu,Jinxin Liu,Mei-Ling Liu,Guangze Nie,Dong Zou

Membrane distillation demonstrates ideal separation performance towards saline water; however, it fails to accomplish the classification and recovery of multiple components from complex saline solutions (i.e., heavy metal ion-laden saline water in process industries). Herein, an adsorption–membrane distillation (MD) coupling process was proposed, as an example of a Pb(II)/NaCl mixed solution, in which the prepared adsorption membrane was firstly employed to adsorb heavy metal ions in the mixed solution and then the brine was concentrated by the MD process to realize water source recovery and utilization. Firstly, an FeOOH@PVDF adsorptive membrane was fabricated to adsorb Pb(II) ions. It was demonstrated that chemical adsorption was identified as the dominant mechanism, and the composite membrane showed excellent selective adsorption for Pb(II). Following this, the omniphobic membrane was then employed to concentrate the Pb(II)-removed saline solution, maintaining a water flux of 16.12 kg·m−2·h−1at a concentration factor of 7.7, demonstrating excellent MD concentration performance. Through this coupled process, the saline wastewater containing heavy metal ions was successfully separated into purified water and concentrated brine without heavy metal ions, providing a novel approach for the treatment and recycling of complex saline wastewater.

Dynamic self-optimizing reconstruction of Heterostructured FeOOH/Al doped Ni3S2 for efficient anion exchange membrane water electrolysis

Yanyan Wu,Mingrun Song,Yingnan Dou,Wenjing Du,Hongru Hao,Yan Wang,Ying Li,Bo Wei

Although the availability of many nickel-based sulfides oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with excellent intrinsic activity, very few of them perform well in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). Their poor stability remains the core challenge in large-scale alkaline water electrolysis. In this work, the use of amorphous FeOOH nanoparticles is proposed as a modifier of Al doped Ni 3 S 2 (FeOOH/NiAlS) to develop robust OER electrode suitable for AEMWE. Under operation conditions, FeOOH protect the bulk sulfides from further corrosion, in turn effectively improves the catalyst utilization due to highly conductive property. Meanwhile, surface reconstructed Al-NiFeOOH serves as the actual active phase, monitored by in situ Raman and EIS. Density functional theory (DFT) reveals that Fe doping optimize their adsorption property, elongates the Ni O bond, and act as a new active site to augment OER activity. Specifically, the reconstructed FeOOH/NiAlS shows an ultra-low overpotential of 316 mV at 1 A cm −2 and high stability at 0.5 A cm −2 over 400 h. The corresponding AEMWE requires a cell voltage of only 1.72 V to reach 1 A cm −2 , while maintaining stable operation for 1400 h at 0.5 A cm −2 , providing a promising prospect for practical applications. Self-sacrificial FeOOH-triggered Co(OH)2 heterointerface enables Co3+ enrichment and boosted high-current oxygen evolution

Liang Luo,Qi Shen,Lixing Wang,Huiluan Qin,Song Lu,Yeqing Wang,Jiadi Ying,Tiancun Liu,Min Guo,Zhixin Yu

Hierarchical Co(OH) 2 /FeOOH is constructed via a facile one-step heterogeneous nucleation strategy. • Self-sacrificial FeOOH nanoneedles protects Co-based active phases under high current. • Efficient Co 2+ →Co 3+ conversion enriches high-valence active sites for accelerated OER kinetics. • The catalyst delivers an low overpotential of 275 mV at 200 mA cm −2 . • The catalyst achieves remarkable operational stability for over 450 h at 1 A cm −2 for OER. Cobalt hydroxide-based catalysts are promising candidates for electrochemical water splitting, yet their practical application in industrial electrolysis is hindered by insufficient activity under high-current conditions. Herein, we rationally construct a hierarchical Co(OH) 2 /FeOOH composite via a one-step heterogeneous nucleation strategy, where FeOOH nanoneedles are uniformly anchored on Co(OH) 2 nanosheets frameworks. The composite achieves an ultra-low overpotential of 275 mV at 200 mA cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with a lower Tafel slope. More notably, it maintains stability with negligible potential fluctuation over 450 h under an industrially relevant current density of 1 A cm −2 . The FeOOH promotes efficient Co 2+ →Co 3+ valence transition, while the hierarchical interfacial interactions enhance charge transfer efficiency and stabilize high-valence Co active species. A unique self-sacrificial mechanism is unveiled that preferential tip dissolution of FeOOH nanoneedles effectively protects the underlying Co-based active sites from over-oxidation and structural collapse, thereby ensuring long-term catalytic stability. Mechanistic studies further suggest that Co(OH) 2 /FeOOH exhibits enhanced lattice-oxygen-participated character relative to CoFe-LDH, which tends to follow the adsorbate evolution mechanism. This work develops a self-sacrificial interface engineering strategy to boost the activity and stability of Co(OH) 2 , and provides a feasible structural design paradigm for developing durable OER electrocatalysts toward industrial-relevant high-current conditions. Cation Exchange-Induced Nickel Active Sites on FeOOH Cocatalyst for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation of BiVO4 Photoanode

Mengxue Wang,Houjiang Liu,Yang Zhang,Yuyao Zhang,Guijun Yang,Jiawei Ding,Yuanyuan Fu,Jin Cui,Zizhuang Li,Kai Song,Naiqin Zhao,Chunnian He,Biao Chen,Fang He

Developing highly efficient and stable BiVO4 photoanodes facilitates high-efficiency Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, offering a promising pathway for converting solar energy into hydrogen energy. Our study focuses on the rational loading and modification of photoanodic cocatalysts to address the inherent limitations of pristine BiVO4. Specifically, Ni active sites were introduced onto the surface via a vapour-phase cation substitution strategy following the photo-assisted electrodeposition of uniformly loaded FeOOH. The substituted Ni:FeOOH /BiVO4 photoanode achieves a significantly enhanced carrier injection efficiency of 94.5% at 1.23 VRHE, with photocurrent density rising from 1.4 mA·cm-2 to 5.7 mA·cm-2, approximately quadrupling the original photoanode’s performance. The Ni substitution of FeOOH overcomes the traditional performance limitations of BiVO4 by simultaneously enhancing catalytic activity and charge transport kinetics. Consequently, this precise construction of active sites and the synergistic design of charge transport channels substantially improve the intrinsic activity of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), providing a versatile and novel strategy for developing highly efficient and stable photoanodes.

Amorphous–Crystalline FeOOH/COF S-Scheme Heterojunctions: Internal Electric Field-Modulated Charge Dynamics for Efficient CO2 Conversion

Zong Jiaxiang,Tang Yihan,Han Jiangang,Wu Guangyu,Xing Weinan

Designing stable photocatalysts with optimized charge transfer and surface kinetics remains a critical challenge for achieving solar-driven CO 2 reduction. In this work, an amorphous FeOOH/covalent organic frameworks (COFs) S-scheme heterojunction was rationally constructed via a solvent-assisted strategy. The integration of defect-rich amorphous FeOOH with the porous COFs matrix not only maximizes the interfacial contact but also induces a strong internal electric field (IEF), enabling directional charge migration and efficient carrier separation. The optimized amorphous FeOOH/COF3 heterostructure exhibits a CO evolution rate of 200.98 μmol·g –1 ·h –1 with a selectivity as high as 93.6% under visible-light irradiation, outperforming the individual components. Spectroscopic and photoelectrochemical studies confirm that the built-in electric field can effectively regulate the formation of an S-scheme charge transfer pathway, which retains the highly reducing electrons on COFs while maintaining the excellent oxidation capability of FeOOH. This work highlights the crucial roles of amorphous/crystalline interface engineering and IEF modulation in constructing high-performance COFs-based photocatalysts and provides new insights into designing efficient S-scheme systems for solar-driven CO 2 conversion.

Morphology and Structural Regulation of S and Cr Co-doped FeOOH Nanoarray for Promoting Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Jianshuai Mu,Aizhu Peng,Xinran Wang,Jin Wang,Zengjiao Hong,Danna Guo,Shulai Lei,Jiajun Wang,En-Cui Yang

Designing low-cost and environmentally friendly oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts to enhance the electrocatalytic water decomposition to produce hydrogen still faces great challenges. In this work, a feasible strategy for metallic/nonmetallic elements co-doping to boost the OER catalytic properties of iron oxyhydroxide is proposed. A series of S and Cr co-doped iron oxyhydroxides nanoarrays loaded on nickel foam (Sx,Cr-FeOOH/NF) were prepared by an electrodeposition–hydrothermal method. The optimized S0.1,Cr-FeOOH/NF exhibits a superior electrocatalytic OER performance with low overpotential (235 mV at 100 mA cm–2), highly outperforming commercial RuO2. Meanwhile, the overpotential of S0.1,Cr-FeOOH/NF increases by only 4 mV after 70 h of stability testing at 100 mA cm–2, demonstrating its durability. The nanoarray with ultrathin nanosheets of S0.1,Cr-FeOOH/NF regulated by S and Cr co-doping can offer abundant active sites and also facilitate mass transportation. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation results show that S and Cr co-doping modifies the electronic structure of S0.1,Cr-FeOOH/NF, which thus optimizes the adsorption energy toward the OER intermediates, promotes the transformation of *O to *OOH (rate-determining step), and thus accelerates the OER kinetics.

A simple self-corrosion method constructs the Ni 3 S 2 @FeOOH heterostructure enables industrialized seawater oxidation

Yujie Yuan,Ziyu Yang,Hao Wang,Tong Wu,Xiaoyi Zhang,Lin Chen,Zhaohuan Wei,Rui Wang,C. Venkata Reddy,Jaesool Shim,Hui Tang

Electrocatalytic seawater splitting holds immense promise as a green hydrogen production technology; however, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) confronts formidable challenges arising from the high concentration of chloride ions (Cl -) and other impurities in seawater. Herein, we develop a facile two-step immersion corrosion strategy to successfully construct a Ni 3 S 2 @FeOOH heterojunction electrocatalyst on nickel foam (NF) tailored for industrial alkaline seawater oxidation. Integrating density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental characterizations, we demonstrate that Ni 3 S 2 @FeOOH selectively enriches OH -while repelling Cl -during OER in alkaline seawater electrolytes. Notably, in situ leaching of SO 4 2-from the electrode triggers efficient self-reconstruction, facilitating the generation of high-valence metal active sites. The asfabricated catalyst exhibits remarkable OER performance with a low overpotential of 390.5 mV at an ultrahigh current density of 1000 mA cm -2 in alkaline seawater. Moreover, it maintains exceptional electrochemical stability for over 1000 hours at the industrial current density of 1000 mA cm -2 . This work provides a scalable strategy for constructing self-reconstructing electrocatalysts that promote highvalence metal site formation and efficient Cl -repulsion in alkaline seawater oxidation.
