In this work, we fabricated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) capped with both polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and iodine (I 2 ) to act as efficient chemiluminescent coreactants for luminol. AuNPs synthesis was based on the direct chemical reduction of Au 3+ with NaBH 4 in the presence of PVP-I 2 complex. The successful synthesis of PVP-I 2 @AuNPs was confirmed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-vis spectrophotometry. Chemiluminescence (CL) intensity of luminol was greatly enhanced, upon its chemical reaction with chemisorbed I 2 on AuNPs surfaces owing to the excellent catalytic activity of AuNPs. The PVP-I 2 @AuNPs/luminol CL sensing system was successfully applied for determination of Hg 2+ ions and the results displayed linearity in a wide range from 0.5 to 2000 nM and an ultrasensitive response to 1.0 nM Hg 2+ . The detection limit of Hg 2+ ions was 0.1 nM, which was 100 times lower than the limit value (10 nM) defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in drinkable water. This ultrasensitive luminogenic system for Hg 2+ detection also exhibited excellent selectivity among 13 types of metals, suggesting that the luminol/PVP-I 2 @AuNPs system is a promising sensor for real-time detection of Hg 2+ .

Chitosan-pectin gel beads (CPBs) were synthesized via a facile and green method and applied to remove heavy metals from aqueous solution. The structural characteristics of CPBs were investigated by SEM and FTIR, the mechanical strength of CPBs was measured by Texture Analyzer and the stability of CPBs was evaluated in acidic solution. To study the adsorption characteristics, the effect of pH, contact time, initial heavy metals concentration, temperature, adsorption mechanism and regeneration were systematically investigated. The adsorption kinetics fitted well pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms were well described by Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cu(II), Cd(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II) were 169.4, 177.6, 208.5 and 266.5 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption-desorption experiments revealed that the CPBs exhibited a great reusability. Thus, the synthesized CPBs in this study had the potential to be utilized as an environment-friendly and green adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals.

Mercury(II) pollution is a growing threat to the environment and humanity. But most of the solution-based Au nanomaterial sensors suffer from low stability seriously. Here, inspired by high-affinity metallophilic Hg 2+ –Au(I) interaction mechanism, we introduced a transparent cellulose nanofiber matrix-supported luminescent gold nanoparticle (AuNPs) stable sensing membrane. In this solid-state membrane, the AuNPs with strong red fluorescence emission were synthesized as the sensor unit. Cellulose nanofibrilatted (CNF) matrix was fabricated as the supporting substrate. With a large specific surface area, the nanostructured CNF matrix offers abundant immobilizing spots to the sensor unit of AuNPs. More importantly, the excited fluorescence can escape directly without apparent scattering loss due to the high transparency of the CNF substrate. With strong emission of the AuNPs, coupled with abundant AuNP immobilizing spots and high transparency of the CNF substrate, the fluorescence signaling path was manipulated sequentially from signal generation, transmission until to quenching, resulting in the membrane demonstrates high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. The detection limit of 1.0 nM is markedly lower than the threshold level of 10.0 nM permitted by US EPA. Aided with the high-performance membrane, the detection of Hg(II) becomes simple, fast, easy handing, and green. We envision the membrane will be an attractive material for Hg(II) monitor.

Fluorescent adenine (A)-rich DNA-templated gold nanoclusters were demonstrated to be a novel probe for determination of biothiols (including cysteine, glutathione, and homocysteine). Fluorescence intensity of adenine-rich DNA-templated gold nanoclusters could be greatly quenched by Hg(II) ions through the formation of a gold nanoclusters–Hg(II) system. When biothiols (cysteine as the model) were introduced into the system, the fluorescence intensity recovered due to the formation of a more stable Hg(II)-thiol coordination complex using Hg-S metal–ligand bonds, which inhibited the Hg(II)-mediated fluorescence quenching of adenine-rich DNA-templated gold nanoclusters. Based on this fluorescence phenomenon, an on–off–on fluorescence strategy was designed for the sensitive determination of biothiols. The method allowed sensitive detection of cysteine with a linear detection range from 100 nM to 5 μM and a limit of detection of 30 nM. Additionally, the assay can be applied for detection of biothiol levels in human plasma samples. Therefore, it can provide a simple and rapid fluorescent platform for biothiol detection.

In this work, we develop a simple and selective sensing method for the detection of mercury ions based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectrum change of Au-Ag core-shell triangular nanoplates . When the concentration of mercury is increased, the etching-induced change of particle size and shape also leads to the decrease of the absorption peak at the fixed wavelength, until a spectrum dip takes place. This spectral change of “peak-to-dip” greatly enlarges the detection range of mercury ions, which could be fine tuned by changing the initial thickness of the Ag coating. Under optimal conditions, the decrease of the logarithmic absorption intensity has a good linear response with the concentration of mercury ions increasing from 10 to 1000 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD) is 0.88 μM. Interference studies and real samples test indicate that, this new sensing method has a good selection for mercury ions and can be practically used in lake water. This work shows the surface etching-induced SPR shift can also leads to the intensity change with “peak-to-dip” fashion, which greatly enlarge the concentration range of the detection and could be widely applied in the spectroscopy sensing based on SPR.

A novel chelating resin (PPS-ATD) containing N and S elements was prepared through the chloromethylation of polyphenylene sulfide resin and subsequent functionalization with 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (ATD). The structure of PPS-ATD was systematically characterized and analyzed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectrometer. The adsorption performance of PPS-ATD was evaluated by batch methods at different pH, temperature, adsorption time, and initial concentration, and the results showed that the PPS-ATD exhibited high adsorption capacity (197.79 mg·g −1 at 298 K) and selectivity for Hg(II). The adsorption of PPS-ATD for Hg(II) was well fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption process was endothermic. After 5 consecutive regeneration cycles, no obvious loss in the adsorption capacity of the PPS-ATD was found, which implied that the PPS-ATD had great application prospects in the treatment of mercury-containing wastewater.

Metal-organic gels (MOGs) are a type of metal-organic colloid material with a large specific surface area, loose porous structure, and open metal active sites. In this work, FeNi-MOGs were synthesized by the simple one-step static method, using Fe(III) and Ni(II) as the central metal ions and terephthalic acid as the organic ligand. The prepared FeNi-MOGs could effectively catalyze the chemiluminescence of luminol without the involvement of H 2 O 2 , which exhibited good catalytic activity. Then, the multifunctional detected platform was constructed for the detection of GSH and Hg 2+ , based on the antioxidant capacity of GSH, and the strong affinity between mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) and GSH which inactivated the antioxidant capacity of GSH. The experimental limits of detection (LOD) for GSH and Hg 2+ were 76 nM and 210 nM, and the detection ranges were 2–100 μM and 8–4000 μM, respectively. The as-proposed sensor had good performance in both detection limit and detection range of GSH and Hg 2+ , which fully met the needs of daily life. Surprisingly, the sensor had low detection limits and an extremely wide detection range for Hg 2+ , spanning five orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the detection of mercury ions in actual lake water and GSH in human serum showed good results, with recovery rates ranging from 90.10 % to 105.37 %, which proved that the method was accurate and reliable. The as-proposed sensor had great potential as the platform for GSH and Hg 2+ detection applications.

The authors describe the synthesis of a two-dimensional organic-inorganic perovskite of the type NH 3 (CH 2 ) 10 NH 3 )PbBr 4 by a fast precipitation method. The resulting powder under photoecitation at 270 nm exhibits yellow luminescence (peaking at 550 nm) in DMSO/water mixtures if the ratio is bigger than 4/6. On addition of Hg(II) and a rhodamine spirolactam, ring opening occurs and colorimetric and fluorescent responses can be seen. Specifically, the emission at 550 nm gradually decreases and a new emission peak appears at 585 nm (corresponding to the emission peak of RBEA-Hg(II) complex) while the color of the solution gradually turns to pink under visible light. The emission peak of the modified perovskite overlaps the 585 nm absorption of rhodamine B, and this results in a FRET effect whose Förster radius (donor-acceptor distance) is calculated from decay time data to be 10.4 Å. Based on these findings, a FRET-based assay for Hg(II) was worked that has a 2.4 μM detection limit.
In DMSO/H 2 O = 1/9 mixed solution, energy transfer from NH 3 (CH 2 ) 10 NH 3 )PbBr 4 (C 10 PbBrPE) to rhodamine B occurred. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process is available by rhodamine B ethylenediamine and C 10 PbBrPE for detection of Hg(II).

Sensitive detection of resistance mutation T790 M is of great significance for early diagnosis and prognostic monitoring of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this paper, we showed a highly sensitive detection strategy for T790 M using a three-level characteristic current signal pattern in an α-hemolysin nanopore. A probe was designed that formed a C–T mismatched base pair with wild-type/P and a T–T mismatched with the T790M/P. The T790M/P produced a unique three-level characteristic current signal in the presence of mercury ions(II): first, T790M–Hg2+–P entering the vestibule of α-HL under the transmembrane potential and overhang of probe occupying the β-barrel, then probe unzipping from the T790M/P, T790 M temporally residing inside the nanocavity due to the interaction with Hg(II), and finally T790 M passing through the β-barrel. The blocking current distribution was concentrated with a small relative standard deviation of about 3%, and the signal peaks of T790 M and wild-type can be completely separated with a high separation resolution of more than 2.5, which achieved the highly sensitive detection of T790 M down to 0.001 pM (confidence level P 95%) with a linear range from 0.001 pM to 1 nM in human serum samples. This highly sensitive recognition strategy enables the detection of low abundance T790 M and provides a method for prognostic monitoring in NSCLC patients.

In this study, a novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor based on a CdSe@CdS quantum dot (QD)-functionalized MoS2-modified electrode was developed for the sensitive detection of mercury ions. Polycationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and negatively charged QDs were adsorbed on the surface of MoS2, in sequence, to form the QD–PDDA–MoS2 composites, which were employed as matrices for immobilizing thymine-rich DNA sequences (DNA1). The gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were combined with another type of thymine-rich DNA sequences (DNA2) and glucose oxidase (GOD) to prepare the GOD–AuNP–DNA2 conjugates. The composites were characterized via UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy. A thymine–Hg2+–thymine complex was formed through Hg2+ mismatching with DNA1 and DNA2. GOD was, therefore, modified onto the electrode surface. GOD catalyzed the reduction of dissolved oxygen by glucose to produce hydrogen peroxide, which was a co-reactant of the QDs. The electrochemiluminescence signal of the biosensor increased linearly with the increase in the Hg2+ concentration over the range from 1.0 × 10−12 to 1.0 × 10−6 M with a detection limit of 1 × 10−13 M. The reproducibility, stability and specificity of the biosensor was also studied. The biosensor was used to determine Hg2+ in a real water sample and satisfactory results were obtained.

The development of a facile approach to simultaneously detect and separate Hg( ii ) ions in an aqueous solution is a challenging topic in the chemosensing field. Herein, we focus on constructing the Hg( ii )-sensitive fluorescence “turn-on”-type composite materials by using halloysite nanotube (HNT) as substrate. Two types of HNTs-based chemosensors, HNTs-PHT and HNTs-BP, were developed in this study, which exhibit Hg( ii )-sensitive fluorescence “turn on” behavior by forming interparticle and intraparticle excimers, respectively. Fortunately, HNTs-PHT is able to effectively restrict the solvent relaxation of π–π* transition and make it a better detection tool in aqueous solution than HNTs-BP. The addition of Hg( ii ) can trigger a dramatical increase at 469 nm in emission curves of HNTs-PHT, which cannot exhibit emission behaviors without the addition of Hg( ii ). Furthermore, the formation of interparticle excimers makes Hg( ii ) serve as a crosslinker to aggregate HNTs-PHT into precipitations. Following this way, Hg( ii ) ions can be facilely removed from the water via a simple filtration or centrifugation approach. The as-prepared HNTs-PHT shows high specificity and precision in simultaneously detecting and separating Hg( ii ) without the recourse to energy consumption, which will give a novel insight to deal with heavy metal pollution.

Herein, a label-free, self-enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing strategy for divalent mercury (Hg(II)) detection was presented. First, a novel self-enhanced ECL luminophore was prepared by combining the ECL reagent tris(2, 2′-bipyridyl) dichlororuthenium(II) hexahydrate (Ru(bpy) 3 2+ ) and its co-reactant carbon nitride quantum dots (CNQDs) via electrostatic interactions. In contrast to traditional ECL systems where the emitter and its co-reactant underwent an intermolecular reaction, the self-enhanced ECL system exhibited a shortened electron-transfer distance and enhanced luminous efficiency because the electrons transferred from CNQDs to oxidized Ru(bpy) 3 2+ via an intramolecular pathway. Furthermore, the as-prepared self-enhanced ECL material was encapsulated in silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles to generate a [email protected] 2 luminophore. Based on the different affinity of [email protected] 2 nanoparticles for single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) and Hg(II)-triggered double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), a label-free ECL biosensor for Hg(II) detection was developed as follows: in the absence of Hg(II), ssDNA was adsorbed on [email protected] 2 surface via hydrogen bond, electrostatic, and hydrophobic interaction. Thus, quenched ECL signal was observed. On the contrary, in the presence of Hg(II), stable dsDNA was formed and carried the ssDNA separating from [email protected] 2 surface, resulting in most of [email protected] 2 existing in their free state. Therefore, a recovered ECL intensity was obtained. On this basis, Hg(II) was measured by the proposed method in the range of 0.1 nM-10 μM, with a detection limit of 33 pM. Finally, Hg(II) spiked in water samples was measured to evaluate the practicality of the fabricated biosensor.
