A new method of solidified floating organic drop microextraction (SFODME) combined with electrothermal vaporization (ETV)-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was developed for the determination of trace heavy metals in environmental water samples with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) as both chelating reagent in SFODME and chemical modifier in ETV. The factors affecting the microextraction efficiency were studied in detail and the optimal extraction conditions were established. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) for SFODME-ETV-ICP-MS determination of Co, Pd, Cd, Hg, Pb and Bi were found to be 0.0060, 0.0091, 0.0020, 0.0041, 0.0170 and 0.0041 ng mL −1 , respectively, with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 2.8–10.0% ( c = 0.5 ng mL −1 , n = 7). The developed method was successfully applied to the analysis of six target metals in Yangtze River and East Lake water samples with recoveries ranging from 77.7 to 119.1%. To validate the accuracy of the method, a certified reference material of Environmental Water (GSBZ50009-88) was analyzed and the determined values were in good agreement with the certified values.

Background Molybdenum (Mo) isotope has been widely used to trace various redox processes in earth science, however, conventional separation methods, typically depend on toxic hydrofluoric acid (HF), redox reagents (e.g., hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and ascorbic acid (HAsc)), or multi-column purification steps, which introduce either safety hazards or operational complexity. In this study, a safe and efficient single-column procedure without use of either HF or redox reagents was developed for Mo separation from various samples for high precision Mo isotope measurements. Results This method takes advantage of high selective adsorption of Mo on an in-house TOPO resin and only utilize the diluted HCl - HNO 3 media, achieving an effective matrix removal, a high Mo recovery (>93 %) and low procedural blanks (<0.50 ng). Repeated analyses of NIST SRM 3134, Mo metal, and seawater CASS-6 yielded an external reproducibility better than ±0.06 ‰ (2SD). Mn-doping experiments revealed that Mn/Mo ratios exceeding 0.50 induced significant polyatomic interference, causing measurable negative shifts (>0.10 ‰) in δ 98/95 Mo NIST SRM 3134 values. The method was validated using 11 geological reference materials, showing good agreement with published values. Additionally, the δ 98/95 Mo NIST SRM 3134 values of five biological reference materials (e.g., green tea, human hair, pig liver, and fetal bovine serum) were reported for the first time, exhibiting a significant isotopic variation of 1.44 ‰. Significance and novelty Compared with anion/cation-exchange resins or extraction resins, this novel procedure based on in-house TOPO resin depends on dilute HCl - HNO 3 media and effectively purifies Mo from the matrix, with good performance and operational safety. Additionally, the δ 98/95 Mo NIST SRM 3134 values for biological reference materials provide valuable references for quality assurance and inter-laboratory comparisons in emerging applications of Mo isotopes in biological systems. Overall, this study provided a simpler and safer alternative method for high-precise determination of Mo isotope in various samples.

Methamphetamine (METH) is one of the most highly addictive illicit drugs abused all over the world. Much evidence indicates that METH abuse leads to major toxicity, medical consequences, and even severe public health consequences. Existing studies usually focus on the pathomechanism of METH-induced toxicity; therefore, data on metabolites and elements correlating with particular toxicity remain scarce. The objective of the present study is to develop appropriate analytical procedures to identify the differential metabolic and elemental biomarkers on METH-induced hepatic injury to rats. The rats were administrated with METH (15 mg/mL/kg, two times per day) via intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections for four consecutive days. The alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activity levels of in the rat serum of the METH group increase significantly compared with those of the control group, suggesting obvious hepatic injury. The results are further confirmed by the histopathological microscopic observation. A total of 18 small molecular metabolites and 19 elements are selected to perform the simultaneous quantification based on the combination of liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Sample preparation was optimized to cover all the analytes. Both methods are optimized and validated according to developed guidelines such as limits of detection, limits of quantification, linearity, precision, and recovery. All the obtained data are within the satisfactory range. The normalized data were processed according to the partial least squares discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) model. Five differential metabolic and six elemental markers are identified in rat plasma based on the variable importance in projection (VIP) (> 1) and t test results. Overall, the results obtained in this study demonstrate the developed methods are suitable for simultaneous determination of metabolic and elemental markers in the hepatic injury to rats induced by METH.

A simple and fast method of low-density solvent based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (LDS-DLLME) followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) has been developed for the speciation analysis of organoarsenic and inorganic arsenic in water samples. The low-density solvent (octanol) was given as the organic phase and injected into the aqueous sample (donor phase) with methanol as the disperser. With As (V), As (III), p-APAA, 4-HPAA, ROX and PAA as target species, factors of LDS-DLLME including pH value, anionic carriers, elution conditions and extractant, were studied in detail. Besides, volumes of solvents were further optimised by response surface methodology. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection for four phenylarsenics and arsenate were in the range of 0.001–0.039 μg L−1. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 3.6–9.4% and the enrichment factors varied from 6.2 to 70.8. The proposed method of LDS-DLLME-HPLC-ICP-MS was satisfactorily applied to the determination of six arsenic compounds in water samples with recoveries of 81.8–111.7% for the spiked lake water samples.

The functional and potential bioactive ingredients, including the elements, amino acids and phytochemicals, in Rosa roxburghii (RR) and R. sterilis (RS) fruits were analysed by ICP-OES and -MS, HPLC-UV, and LC-MS/MS, respectively, and were compared to elucidate the characteristics of their ingredients. The antioxidant activities of the ethanolic extracts of RR and RS fruits were evaluated using four different methods, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, inhibition of β -carotene bleaching, and ferric reducing antioxidant power assays; the correlation between the ingredients and their antioxidant activities was assessed. Furthermore, principal component analysis was selected to differentiate between the intra- and interspecies variation of RR and RS fruits. The results showed that RR and RS fruits contained numerous nutritious and biological ingredients and exhibited antioxidant activities, but there were significant differences among the fruits. Nevertheless, RR and RS fruits are attractive materials to produce highly valuable, functional foods.

A novel Schiff base-chitosan-grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (S-CS-MWCNTs) solid-phase extraction adsorbent was synthesized by covalently grafting a Schiff base-chitosan (S-CS) onto the surfaces of oxidized MWCNTs. The adsorbent was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The results showed that S-CS was successfully grafted onto the surfaces of MWCNTs. A method was developed for the determination of heavy metals, namely V(V), Cr(VI), Cu(II), As(V) and Pb(II) in biological and environmental samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry coupled with preconcentration with S-CS-MWCNTs. The parameters influencing preconcentration of target ions, such as the pH of the sample solution, the flow rate of sample loading, the eluent concentration, and eluent volume, were investigated and optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the enrichment factors of V(V), Cr(VI), Cu(II), As(V), and Pb(II) reached 111, 95, 60, 52, and 128, respectively, and the detection limits were as low as 1.3–3.8 ng L −1 . The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of trace-metal ions in herring, spinach, river water, and tap water with good recoveries ranging from 91.0% to 105.0%.

Water contamination caused by heavy metals represents an urgent global issue. Cu 2+ , a potential trace heavy metal pollutant, can accumulate in the human body through the food chain, leading to excessive levels that give rise to diverse health complications. Hence, in this investigation, a novel and efficacious fluorescent probe named Eu-BTB was developed for the detection of Cu 2+ , employing 1,3,5-triphenyl(4-carboxyphenyl) (H 3 BTB) as the ligand and Eu 3+ as the metallic framework. The probe demonstrates exceptional fluorescence characteristics. The interaction between the probe ligand BTB and Eu 3+ triggers an antenna effect, heightening the emission efficiency of Eu 3+ while preserving its intrinsic emission. The introduction of Cu 2+ competes with BTB for binding, thus quelling the antenna effect and inducing a fluorescence alteration. Within the concentration range of 0.05–10 μM, the fluorescence intensity-to-Cu 2+ concentration ratio exhibits a robust linear correlation, with a remarkably low detection limit of 10 nM and a rapid response time of 3 min. The fluorescent probe has been effectively deployed for the detection of copper ions in water across diverse environmental conditions, with the obtained outcomes being validated via the conventional approach of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The Eu-BTB probe showcases the advantages of simplicity, swiftness, and broad applicability, thus affirming its potential for the prompt and accurate detection of Cu 2+ in diverse environmental water samples.

Radionuclide uranium has both a chemical and radioactive toxicity, leading to severe nephrotoxicity as it predominantly deposits itself in the kidneys after entering into human bodies. It crosses renal cell membranes, accumulates in mitochondria and causes mitochondrial oxidative damage and dysfunction. In this study, a mitochondria-targeted heptamethine indocyanine small molecule chelator modified with gallic acid (IR-82) is synthesized for uranium detoxication. Both gallic acid and sulfonic acid, as two hydrophilic endings, make IR-82, being excreted feasibly through kidneys. Gallic acid with polyphenol groups has a steady metal chelation effect and potent antioxidant ability, which may facilitate IR-82-alleviated uranium nephrotoxicity simultaneously by enhancing uranium decorporation from the kidneys and reducing mitochondrial oxidative damage. Cell viability assays demonstrate that IR-82 can significantly improve the cell viability of uranium-exposed human renal (HK-2) cells. It is also demonstrated to accumulate in mitochondria and reduce mitochondrial ROS and total intracellular ROS, as well as intracellular uranium content. In vivo imaging experiments in mice show that IR-82 could be excreted out through kidneys. ICP-MS tests further reveal that IR-82 can efficiently decrease the uranium deposition in mouse kidneys. IR-82 treatment improves the animal survival rate and renal function of experimental mice after high-dose uranium exposure. Collectively, our study may evidence that the development of uranium decorporation agents with kidney–mitochondrion dual targeting abilities is a promising strategy for attenuating uranium-induced nephrotoxicity.

This study aimed at developing an accurate method for determining the levels of total arsenic (As) and arsenic species in edible shrimp with the collision/reaction cell (CRC) in the O2 mass-shift mode to remove interferences. The microwave-assisted extraction method demonstrated satisfactory efficiency (86.9%), and As species were separated rapidly within 11 min when the optimized chromatographic conditions were adopted. During the study, the limits of detection, precision, and spike recovery for six arsenic species were in the ranges from 0.010 to 0.028 μg/L, 1.89 to 3.14%, and 96.9 to 103.2%, respectively. The analytical methods were successfully applied to determine the concentrations of total arsenic and As species in eight shrimp samples. The results showed that arsenobetaine was the predominant As species, and inorganic arsenic contents were below 0.5 mg/kg in the shrimp samples analyzed. The health risk assessment indicated that the shrimp samples detected posed no particular risk of As to local consumers.

Nowadays, label-free atomic spectrometric bioassays are attracting great research interest because of their advantages of low cost, simple design and operation, etc. Herein, a novel and simple chemical vapor generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CVG-AFS)/inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) label-free detection method is presented for highly sensitive and selective assay of DNA and proteins. This work mainly combined a phenomenon that CdTe quantum dots (QDs) can be used to selectively differentiate free Hg2+ and the T–Hg2+–T complex, with the use of simple membrane filtration separation to improve the performance of the label-free bioassay methods. Upon hybridization with the DNA/protein (carcinoembryonic antigen, CEA) target, the T–Hg2+–T hairpin structure was opened and Hg2+ was released; this initiated the cation exchange reaction between Hg2+ and CdTe QDs which released Cd2+ simultaneously. Subsequently, the free Cd2+ was separated by the filtration membrane without separating the CdTe QDs, which could then be separated from the sample matrices for the CVG-AFS/ICP-MS assay. Under the optimal conditions, this method possessed high sensitivity for DNA and CEA determination with limits of detection (LODs) of 0.2 nM and 0.2 ng mL−1, and linear dynamic ranges of 1–160 nM and 0.5–20 ng mL−1, respectively, and exhibited excellent DNA sequence specificity and protein selectivity. This method preserves the advantages of the label-free atomic spectrometric bioassay, and combined with the selective cation exchange reaction and simple filtration separation to improve the performance.

This work demonstrates the power of graphene and graphene oxide (GO) as stationary phases for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) based elemental speciation analysis combined with detection by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Inorganic mercuric and organomercuric compounds coordinate with 2-thiosalicylic acid (TSA) to form Hg-TSA complexes. These complexes are retained by GO owing to its strong π electron stacking capability for TSA. Separation of the four mercury species tested was achieved within 12 min with resolutions of 1.8–3.4. Similarly, inorganic anionic species of arsenic and selenium, and organoarsenicals are electrostatically attracted by aromatic quaternary ammonium cations in the mobile phases. Organoarsenicals also can be separated by using long alkyl quaternary ammonium compounds. Aromatic quaternary ammonium compounds possess particularly high affinity to GO because of strong π interaction. This leads to effective retention of the As/Se anions. A comparison between graphene and GO as stationary phases for HPLC separation of mercury and arsenic species demonstrates negligible difference. Arsenic species are separated within 32 min, and selenium species are achieved within 20 min. The mobile phase also allows efficient separation of iodate, iodide, bromate, bromide, chromic acid and chromate. Analysis of a certified fish tissue by HPLC-ICP-MS using the GO@SiO 2 column demonstrates its feasibility for routine elemental analysis. Good agreement is found between experimental results and certified values, with recoveries ranging between 92 and 96%.
Graphene oxide as a stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric detection (HPLC-ICP-MS) in speciation analyses of mercury, arsenic, selenium, iodine, bromine and chromium is achieved for the first time.

Iron oxide minerals, such as hematite and magnetite, are commonly found in a wide range of geological environments. Their Fe isotopic composition acts as a potent geochemical tracer, finding applications across various realms of Earth sciences. However, natural iron oxide minerals often have a high Cr content up to percentile levels, necessitating correction of isobaric interference caused by 54 Cr + on 54 Fe + to ensure accurate and precise in situ Fe isotopic compositions. In this study, a pure chromium metal with homogeneous isotopic compositions was examined within the analysis sequence to obtain the fractionation factor of Cr (β Cr ) for isobaric interference correction. A femtosecond laser ablation system combined with wet plasma conditions was used to decrease the matrix effect. We synthesized a series of magnetite and hematite samples with simple matrix as well as natural magnetite samples with complex matrix to evaluate the feasibility of Cr interference correction. By employing our proposed correction method, the deviation caused by the isobaric interference of 54 Cr + was effectively eliminated. The corrected δ 56 Fe values for hematite and magnetite samples, even with a Cr/Fe ratio of as high as 1.27, exhibited good agreement with the reference values within the long-term reproducibility uncertainty of 0.10‰. These results indicate the robustness of Cr interference correction in obtaining accurate Fe isotopic compositions of Cr-rich iron oxides.
