Investigation of a Ni-Modified MCM-41 Catalyst for the Reduction of Oxygenates and Carbon Deposits during the Co-Pyrolysis of Cellulose and Polypropylene

Yu Shi,Chang Liu,Jiankun Zhuo,Qiang Yao

Catalytic fast co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic is an effective method to achieve high-quality bio-oil production. In this work, (Ni)-MCM-41 catalysts with different Ni loadings were prepared and characterized in detail by using a variety of advanced analytical techniques, and the effects on the catalytic performance were analyzed by micropyrolysis with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) methods. The results showed that an appropriate amount of Ni addition can effectively modulate the physicochemical properties of MCM-41. For a Ni loading of 25.1 wt % (Cat-C), the catalyst showed an optimal catalytic performance, a decrease in the proportion of oxygenated compounds in the product from 35.6 (MCM-41) to 13.4%, and an increase in the relative total amount of olefins plus aromatics from 62.2 (MCM-41) to 84.6%. The excellent catalytic performance of Cat-C can be ascribed to a balancing of its proper physical structural properties, appropriate acidity, strong metal–carrier interaction, high metal dispersion, and excellent compatibility balance between active and acidic sites.

Space-confined growth of lead-free halide perovskite Cs3Bi2Br9 in MCM-41 molecular sieve as an efficient photocatalyst for CO2 reduction at the gas−solid condition under visible light

Zihao Cui,Peng Wang,Yaqiang Wu,Xiaolei Liu,Guoqiang Chen,Peng Gao,Qianqian Zhang,Zeyan Wang,Zhaoke Zheng,Hefeng Cheng,Yuanyuan Liu,Ying Dai,Baibiao Huang

A facile and effective impregnation method is employed to synthesize the space-confined growth of lead-free halide perovskite Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 in MCM-41 molecular sieve. This MCM-41 @CBB (Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 ) composite shows an outstanding performance for the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CO at the gas−solid condition under visible-light irradiation. The CO production rate of the MCM-41 @ 50 wt% CBB is determined to be 17.24 μmol g −1 h −1 , which greatly exceeds that of pure CBB (1.89 μmol g −1 h −1 ). The composite is highly stable showing no apparent decrease in the catalytic activity after 8 cycles of repeated experiment. The performance of space-confined growth of CBB nanoparticles in the serial molecular sieve exhibits 2.97–13.4 fold higher than that of pure CBB, respectively, which is superb than CPB (CsPbBr 3 ) and MCM-41 @CPB prepared in the same condition. The results are comparable with those reported for many lead halide perovskites, and are in the top among the lead-free perovskites, especially bismuth halide perovskites.

Supported Ni–Al–VPO/MCM-41 As Efficient and Stable Catalysts for Highly Selective Preparation of Adipic Acid from Cyclohexane with NO2

Jian Jian,Kuiyi You,Qing Luo,Hongxu Gao,Fangfang Zhao,Pingle Liu,Qiuhong Ai,He’an Luo

Developing an economic and efficient approach for the production of adipic acid is a grand challenge in the chemical industry. Toward this goal, we report a simple method for selective synthesis of adipic acid from cyclohexane with NO2 by using Ni–Al–VPO/MCM-41 as catalyst. The physical-chemical properties of supported Ni–Al–VPO/MCM-4 catalysts were characterized, the reaction conditions were optimized, and the reusability of the catalyst was examined. The results showed that the supported 30%Ni–Al–VPO/MCM-41 catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance with 65.1% of cyclohexane conversion and 85.3% of selectivity toward adipic acid, especially, its catalytic performance was still stable after five runs. Maybe this developed method has potential industrial application prospects for production of adipic acid.

Regulating Si/Al Role of MCM-41 with Graphite Carbon-Coated Co NPs for Efficient Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol

Zhouxiao Zhai,Jingce Bi,Yi Wang,Ningning Liu,Linshan Wang,Xia Zhang,Zhuopeng Wang,Yide Han

Graphical In this work, a mesoporous molecular sieve with graphite carbon-coated Co NPs (Co@CN/Al-MCM-41) was successfully synthesized by vacuum-injecting the precursor solution into the MCM-41 molecular sieve and subsequent calcination. Experimental results demonstrate that Co@CN/Al0.1-MCM-41 exhibits excellent catalytic performance in the hydrogenation of FF. Its excellent catalytic performance is primarily attributed to the interaction between Co species and Al species of MCM-41, including the reduction effect, electron transfer, and enhancement of acid density. The catalytic hydrogenation of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) using metal-loaded mesoporous molecular sieves represents a significant research area. In this work, a mesoporous molecular sieve with graphite carbon-coated Co NPs (Co@CN/Al-MCM-41) was successfully synthesized by vacuum-injecting the precursor solution into the MCM-41 molecular sieve and subsequent calcination. Using Co@CN/Al 0.1 -MCM-41 as the catalyst, the selective hydrogenation of FF to FOL achieved a conversion rate of 91.2% under mild conditions at 120 °C, which is 2.85 times higher than that of Al-free Co@CN/MCM-41, with an FOL selectivity of 97.2%. The experimental results revealed a strong correlation between FF conversion and the Si/Al ratio of MCM-41 molecular sieve. Increasing the Al species content facilitated the formation of more Co NPs active sites because of the strong electrostatic interaction, thereby promoting the activation of FF and hydrogen and enhancing the catalytic activity of Co@CN/Al 0.1 -MCM-41. Additionally, Co@CN/Al 0.1 -MCM-41also exhibited stable performance over five consecutive cycles, which was attributed to the formation of graphite carbon-coated Co NPs structure during the synthesis process. This simple fabrication strategy provides a novel approach for the modification of mesoporous molecular sieves with excellent catalytic activities.

In situ intercalation of Au nanoparticles and magnetic γ-Fe2O3 in the walls of MCM-41 with abundant void defects for highly efficient reduction of 4-nitrophenol and organic dyes

Shijian Zhou,Weiming Jin,Yun Ding,Bo Shao,Bangbang Wang,Xu Hu,Yan Kong

Nowadays, agglomeration and leaching of metal active sites during reaction and recycle processes are considered to be a thorny problem for noble metal-based catalysts. Therefore, to make improvements, nano-gold was selected as a representative research object for many noble metals. In this study, Au nanoparticles (NPs) and magnetic γ-Fe2O3 were intercalated in situ in the walls of MCM-41 via a one-pot hydrothermal method, in which the intercalation process was preceded by co-condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with MPTS-Au complexes ((3-mercaptopropyl)-trimethoxysilane (MPTS), HAuCl4·3H2O), and a Fe3O4 sol. By the confinement of silica, Au NPs and γ-Fe2O3 were well dispersed in the walls of MCM-41, the sintering and loss of Au NPs was highly restricted, and the magnetic property of γ-Fe2O3 facilitated the recycling of Au-based catalysts. Additionally, abundant void defects appeared in MCM-41 by assembly of micelles in different sizes and shapes, greatly improving the surface area of target catalysts (>1800 m2 g−1), which provided more opportunities for contact and collision between reactors and gold active sites, effectively solving the problem of mass transportation. As expected, a series FeAu@MCM-41 catalysts showed superior catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and organic dyes (MB, RhB, and MO), and these catalysts were recycled five times without significant loss of metal species or catalytic activity. This is attributed to the confinement effect of the silica walls and the excellent magnetic properties of γ-Fe2O3. This special structure of FeAu@MCM-41 catalysts provides more insights for designing and fabricating noble metal-based catalysts with desirable performances.

Selective Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Lignin to Alkyl Guaiacols Over NiMo/Al-MCM-41

Xinyu Lu,Haoquan Guo,Jiajia Chen,Duoying Wang,Adam F. Lee,Xiaoli Gu

Graphical Oil upgrading : This study investigates the efficient deoxygenation of lignin extracted from Chinese fir sawdust via oxidative delignification to sustainable liquid fuels rich in alkyl guaiacols through in-situ catalytic transfer hydrogenation using isopropanol, formic acid, and NiMo/Al-MCM-41 as organic solvent, internal hydrogen donor, and hydrodeoxygenation catalyst, respectively. Efficient deoxygenation of lignin-derived bio-oils is central to their adoption as precursors to sustainable liquid fuels in place of current fossil resources. In-situ catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH), using isopropanol and formic acid as solvent and in-situ hydrogen sources, was demonstrated over metal-doped and promoted MCM-41 for the depolymerization of oxygen-rich (35.85 wt%) lignin from Chinese fir sawdust (termed O-lignin). A NiMo/Al-MCM-41 catalyst conferred an optimal lignin-derived oil yield of 61.6 wt% with a comparatively low molecular weight ( M w =542 g mol −1 , M n =290 g mol −1 ) and H/C ratio of 1.39. High selectivity to alkyl guaiacols was attributed to efficient in-situ hydrogen transfer from isopropanol/formic acid donors, and a synergy between surface acid sites in the Al-doped MCM-41 support and reducible Ni/Mo species, which improved the chemical stability and quality of the resulting lignin-derived bio-oils.

A novel MCM-41-supported bi-functional catalyst by immobilizing organoamine and Rh–P complex for one-pot synthesis of 2-ethylhexenal from propene

Wan-Zhong Lang,Xun-Wen Liu,Ya-Jun Guo,Bo Su,Lian-Feng Chu,Cui-Xiang Guo

We have demonstrated the synthesis of a novel MCM-41-supported bi-functional catalyst containing organoamine and Rh–P complex. We further characterized the catalysts by state-of-the-art analytical techniques including FTIR, UV–vis, 31 P CP MAS NMR, TGA, XRD, BET, TEM, ICP-AES and elemental analysis. The as-synthesized catalyst was applied to the one-pot synthesis of 2-ethylhexenal using propene as raw materials. FTIR, UV–vis, 31 P CP MAS NMR, and TGA results indicate that the active sites, organoamine and Rh–P complex, are successfully immobilized on the surface of catalyst support. The N and Rh content can be adjusted by adding different amounts of organoamine and Rh–P complex during the process of catalyst preparation. The mesoporous structure of the zeolite support remains intact after immobilization. However, the specific surface area and BJH pore size of the mesoporous zeolite support decrease after being grafted with organoamine and Rh–P complex. The bi-functional catalyst with primary amine has the best catalytic performances for the one-pot synthesis of 2-ethylhexenal since it has better synergistic effect with silanol groups, followed by diamine and then tertiary amine. The Rh content of the catalyst determines the hydroformylation reaction rate of propene, while the self-condensation of n -butanal is determined by the balance between organoamine and silanol groups. The results indicate the hydroformylation reaction is the control step of this tandem reaction when the content of Rh in the catalyst is below 0.19%. In contrast, this tandem reaction is controlled by the self-condensation of n -butanal with further increasing Rh content. We found that the catalyst containing 1.73% of N (primary amine) and 0.19% of Rh is a suitable choice. And we obtained the best yield of 2-ethylhexenal above 77% in the one-pot synthesis from propene.

Tailoring Pore Size in Bimetallic Nb-Mn/MCM-41 Catalysts for Enhanced Plasma-Driven Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene

Xiaohong Yao,Jian Zhang,Chao Long

This study explored how pore size engineering in Nb-Mn/MCM-41 catalysts affects plasma-catalytic toluene oxidation. Adjusting the pore diameter (2.49–3.98 nm) modulated metal-support interactions and oxygen dynamics, with pore expansion to 3.73 nm (M3) optimizing the Mn4+/(Mn2++ Mn3+) ratio (XPS: 36.8%), the amount of lattice oxygen species (O2-TPD: 0.222 mmol/g), and crystallite size control (1.5 ± 0.2 nm, TEM). Smaller pores (M1: 2.49 nm) enhanced toluene adsorption but limited active site accessibility, while oversized pores (M4: 3.98 nm) reduced oxygen storage capacity (0.600→0.412 mmol/g). The Nb-Mn/M3 catalyst achieved superior performance with 96.8% toluene conversion, 55.0% CO2selectivity, and 85.4% carbon balance, while minimizing organic byproducts (GC-MS). Mechanistic studies revealed pore-mediated oxygen storage-transport cycles as critical for decoupling adsorption and oxidation steps. This study reveals fundamental mechanisms linking pore architecture to plasma-catalytic synergy in toluene oxidation, offering critical insights for the systematic design of energy-efficient, plasma-catalytic systems targeting industrial VOCs remediation.

Promoting hydrocarbon production from fatty acid pyrolysis using transition metal or phosphorus modified Al-MCM-41 catalyst

Fangqi Wang,Fengwen Yu,Yi Wei,Ao Li,Shenzheng Xu,Xianghong Lu

Oleaginous biomass conversion to liquid hydrocarbon biofuels has emerged as an effective solution to the energy crisis and environmental problems. In this process, the removal of oxygenated compounds will directly affect the effectiveness of subsequent biofuel applications. Herein, deoxygenation of oleic acid by catalytic cracking was conducted using five various elements (La, Ni, P, Zr and Ce) modified Al-MCM-41. The related characterizations were carried out for these catalysts, including N 2 physisorption, XRD, XPS, pyridine-FTIR and NH 3 -TPD techniques. The results showed the mesoporous structure of Al-MCM-41 was maintained after different modifications, and these catalysts greatly improved the hydrocarbons content and physiochemical properties of biofuels. The modified catalysts tended to facilitate the decarbonylation pathway and showed high selectivity to alkane and aromatic hydrocarbons. Besides, La/Al-MCM-41 presented excellent anti-coking activity. Ni/Al-MCM-41 showed both high dehydrogenation and deoxygenation activities. The Zr modification and Ce modification had a promotion effect in the deoxidizing activity of the catalyst, owing to the formation of oxophilic metal oxides. Noteworthily, P/Al-MCM-41 displayed the best deoxidizing performance due to its high Brönsted acidity, which caused the highest hydrocarbons content (82.30 %) and the lowest fatty acids content (around 0 %) of the biofuel. Moreover, the resulting biofuel had not only low oxygen content (3.88 wt.%) and acid value (5.47 mgKOH g −1 ) but also a high calorific value (44.50 MJ kg −1 ), which could be processed into green diesel. Hence, the catalytic cracking of fatty acid over P/Al-MCM-41 has excellent potential to produce high-quality renewable fuels.

Synthesis of 1-hexanol by highly selective hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using Ni/MCM-41 and Pt-WOX/t-ZrO2

Ying Xu,Genkuo Nie,Xiao Jiang,Hongyu Wang,Guihua Yang,Ziyi Yan,Ji-Jun Zou,Hailong Yu,Shitao Yu,Yu Liu

Metal-metal oxide catalysts are robust in selective hydrodeoxygenation of biomass derives. Herein, 1-hexanol in total yield about 76 % is firstly achieved by high selective hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural over Ni/MCM-41 and Pt-WO X /t-ZrO 2 . By controlling the amount ratio of Ni/Ni 2+ to 0.46, a 99.9 % yield of 2,5-tetrahydrofurandimethanol was achieved from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural by Ni/MCM-41. Subsequently high yield of 76 % of 1-hexanol was obtained by competing pathways of tandem reactions beginning at SN2 reaction at the epoxy atom of 2,5-tetrahydrofurandimethanol to enol/tautomer intermediates and ending with controllable selective hydrogenation. The reaction mechanism is explored and the reaction-oriented regulation is realized by the additional strong BrÖnsted acid sites generated by electron transfer from W to Pt and the appropriate amount of Pt 0 sites of Pt-WO X /t-ZrO 2 , where the ratios of W 5+ /W 6+ and Pt 0 /Pt 2+ are 0.31 and 4.58 respectively. This work provides a new and green method for the synthesis of 1-hexanol and expands the utilization of metal–metal oxide in making value-added products using sustainable feedstocks.

Fabrication of (amino)thiol chelating agents on SBA-15 and MCM-41 and applications in the extraction of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) cations from aqueous solutions

Maqinana Siphosethu,Kowenje Chrispin B. O.,Ojwach Stephen O.

Reactions of N 1 ,N 3 -bis(2-mercaptoethyl)isophthalamide with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (3-APTES) afforded the the corresponding Schiff base chelating ligand, (1Z,3Z)-N 1 ,N 3 -bis(2-mercaptoethyl)-N' 1 ,N' 3 bis(3(triethoxysilyl)propyl) isophthalimidamide ( L1 ) in high yields. Subsequent immobilization of L1 on mesoporous silica supports (SBA-15 and MCM-41) following a divergent method produced the respective fabricated L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 materials. Characterization of the fabricated chelating agents was accomplished using SEM, TEM, EDX, BET, PXRD, FT-IR, and TGA-DTA/DSC techniques. The fabricated materials were used as adsorbents for the removal of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) metal ions from water. Both the L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 materials demonstrated high extraction efficiencies for Cd(II) and Pb(II) cations, achieving over 98% and 97% removal, respectively, across a broad pH range (3–9). For Cr(VI) anions, relatively lower optimal extraction efficiencies of 67% and 77% were recorded between pH 3–12, for L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 , adsorbents, respectively. Faster extraction kinetics were observed for Cd(II) and Pb(II) cations, with over 94% removal achieved within 30 min, even at low initial metal concentrations (5 ppm) and adsorbent dosages (10 mg). Kinetic modelling showed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo -second-order kinetics, with high correlation coefficients (R 2 ) for Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cr(VI) of 0.97573, 0.97348, and 0.91017 using L1@MCM-41 , and 0.9754, 0.97089, and 0.89411 using L1@SBA-15 , respectively. Equilibrium data best fitted the Freundlich isotherm model, with R 2 values of 0.97952, 0.99892, and 0.97374 for L1@SBA-15 and 0.99879, 0.99999, and 0.90923 for L1@MCM-41 , corresponding to Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cr(VI), respectively. In competitive metal ion systems, the extraction selectivity followed the order Cd(II) > Pb(II) > Cr(VI), with L1@SBA-15 exhibiting superior overall performance compared to L1@MCM-41 . The extraction mechanism was postulated to occur through the coordination of the metal ions to the nitrogen/sulfur donor atoms in the chelating agents, consistent with the hard and soft acid and base (HSAB) principle. Furthermore, L1@MCM-41 demonstrated notable regeneration potential, retaining Cr(VI) extraction efficiencies over four successive cycles. Graphical

A tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl aminomethane-functionalized SBA-15, SBA-16 and MCM-41 for recovery of boron from salt lake brine

Qinglong Luo,Lei Liu,Ruiqiang Dong,Zhongfu Cheng,Mingzhe Dong,Zhijian Wu,Jun Li,Xueli Huang

ABSTRACT The removal of boron from aqueous solution and the enrichment of boron from salt lake have attracted more attention. In this work, organo-inorganic hybrid mesoporous boron adsorbents were synthesized by tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl aminomethane (TRIS) grafted onto the meso-porous SBA-15, SBA-16 and MCM-41, respectively. And the structures are characterized by infrared, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray, mapping, X-ray diffraction, point of zero charge, and Marvin laser particle size analyzer. The results showed that TRIS was successfully grafted onto SBA-15, SBA-16, and MCM-41. The adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics were best fitted with Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order rate equation, respectively. The adsorption capacity of the three adsorbents was 15.28, 15.70 and 14.17 mg/g, respectively. And the same functional group has little influence on the boron adsorption capacity of different carrier adsorbents of the same type (organosilicon material). These adsorbents have highly selective adsorption of boron, and maintain good lifetime after adsorption–desorption for 5 times, and the dissolution loss rate of SBA-16-TRIS after ten cycles was 0.93%.
