Fe3+ regulated synthesis of Fe3O4@MIL-100(Fe): nanoarchitectonics and enhanced photo-Fenton activity

Wang Hui,Liu Jun,Chang Meng-Jie,Li Jia,Feng Qing,Jia Bo

The weak light absorption, low charge separation efficiency, and poor recyclability severely restrict the practical application of heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst MIL-100(Fe). Herein, we report the synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) with tunable structures via hydrothermal growth, using Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O and H 3 btc as precursors on an Ag/Fe 3 O 4 template. Notably, Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O serves dual roles: it acts as a precursor for MIL-100(Fe) formation and as an oxidizing agent to remove the Ag template. The microstructure of the resulting catalyst can be precisely regulated by varying the Fe 3⁺ dosage. By optimizing the Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O dosage, the optimal hollow Fe 3 O 4 /MIL-100(Fe) catalyst is obtained, which exhibits excellent dispersion, a distinct core/shell structure, a larger specific surface area (312.6 m 2 /g), a smaller average pore diameter (4.9298 nm), strong magnetic separability, and superior photo-Fenton degradation performance (95.6% within 30 min). After 4 consecutive cycles, the degradation efficiency toward Rhodamine B (RhB) remains above 90%, demonstrating outstanding cycling stability. Electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis confirms that both ·O 2 ⁻ and ·OH are the dominant reactive oxygen species responsible for the catalytic degradation reactions.

Synergistic effect of adsorption coupled with catalysis based on graphene-supported MOF hybrid aerogel for promoted removal of dyes

Yinjia Wan,Jianzhi Wang,Fei Huang,Yanan Xue,Ning Cai,Jie Liu,Weimin Chen,Faquan Yu

A three-dimensional MIL-100(Fe)/graphene hybrid aerogel (MG-HA) was fabricated via in situ decoration of graphene oxide with MIL-100(Fe) nanoparticles. The resulting MG-HA with interconnected pore structure was applied as both adsorbent and catalyst for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The result shows that the saturation adsorption capacity of the MG-HA was as high as 333.33 mg g−1, exceeding that of both the corresponding pristine graphene aerogel and MIL-100(Fe) nanoparticles. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, MG-HA further exhibited catalytic degradation ability. The dual functions achieved a synergistic effect leading to the quick and complete removal of MB. The benefit was revealed in the treatment of high concentration of pollutants without leaving secondary pollution. The merit was intuitively demonstrated in the instant removal of MB through a model separation device in comparison with a series of common adsorbents. A feasible mathematic model was built based on the synergistic adsorption/catalysis process, which perfectly fitted the experimental data. A pseudo-second-order adsorption process and pseudo-first-order catalytic degradation kinetics were revealed. Additionally, the MG-HA was able to retain 93.4% of its initial removal efficiency after 5 cycles of application. The macro-material body can be easily separated and reused without a time-consuming and high-cost recycling process.

Rational Design of Z-Scheme Heterostructures Composed of Bi/Fe-Based MOFs for the Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Jing Xu,Songlin Zhu,Huizhi Zhou,Minghao Hou,Kangle Wan,Xueqi Zhang,Wei Yan,Yingcong Wei,Yuanping Chen

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently gained attention as a highly promising category of photocatalytic materials, showing great potential in the degradation of organic dyes such as Rhodamine B (RhB). Nonetheless, the mono-metal MOF materials in this application are often constrained by their limited light absorption capabilities and their propensity for recombination with carriers. The combination of different metal-based MOFs to form heterogeneous reactors could present a promising approach for the removal of dyes from water. In this work, a new CAU-17/MIL-100(Fe) Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst composed of two MOFs with the same ligands is reported to realize the efficient degradation of dyes in water. The combination of the two MOFs results in a significant enhancement of the surface open sites, optical responsivity range, and charge-separating efficiency through synergistic effects. In addition, the capture experiments conducted on the photocatalytic process have verified that ∙O2−and h+are the primary active species. Consequently, CAU-17/MIL-100(Fe) exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity and stability. The degradation rate of the optimal CAU-17/MIL-100(Fe) photocatalyst was 34.55 times that of CAU-17 and 3.60 times that of MIL-100(Fe). Our work provides a new strategy for exploring the visible-light degradation of RhB in bimetallic MOF composites.

Fluorescent β-cyclodextrin-based hydrogel for enhanced adsorption and fluorescence detection of malachite green

Yuting Zhang,Xinmiao Qi,Qiang Ma,Jie Li,Xin Guo,Jianzheng Qiao,Yiqiang Wu

Malachite green (MG), a synthetic dye widely used in industrial applications and aquaculture, poses significant health hazards due to its genotoxic and carcinogenic properties. Addressing these risks requires innovative methods for the efficient MG removal and sensitive detection. In this study, we developed a novel β-cyclodextrin/carbon dots-loaded cellulose nanofibrils/MIL-100(Fe) hydrogel (βCCM) for enhanced adsorption and fluorescence detection of MG. The βCCM demonstrated an exceptional maximum adsorption capacity of 1789 mg/g. Furthermore, βCCM exhibited bright orange fluorescence, which was significantly quenched upon exposure to MG through inner filter effect and static quenching. The fluorescence detection platform exhibited high sensitivity, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.09 μg/L and excellent linearity. Its practical applicability was validated through successful MG removal and detection in real water samples, achieving high recoveries and reproducibility. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the enhanced adsorption performance resulted from the incorporation of MIL-100(Fe) and the formation of a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure, which also stabilized the fluorescent signal and amplified detection sensitivity. This study highlights the effectiveness of βCCM for both MG adsorption and detection, presenting a novel strategy for designing advanced β-cyclodextrin-based hydrogels tailored for water treatment.

Boron adsorption and isotopic separation from water by isostructural metal-organic frameworks MIL-100(M)

Xiangyunxiu Meng,Ruiwen Luo,Guijie Guo,Yulin Li,Hui Fang,Peng Bai,Jiafei Lyu,Xianghai Guo

Adsorption has been expected to be promising for boron-containing water treatment , boron resources recovery and boron isotopic separation. Although metal-organic frameworks have been demonstrated to be potential adsorbent candidates, in-depth investigation of the structure-performance relationship remains insufficient. Herein, the performance and mechanism of boron adsorption and isotopic separation were systematically investigated with isostructural MOFs. Six isomorphic MIL-100(M) materials with metal species from the third main group (Al, Ga and In) and the fourth period (Sc, Cr and Fe) were solvothermally synthesized as boron adsorbents. Superior boron isotopic separation factors ( S ) with 10 B preference and comparable boron adsorption capacity ( Q ) were observed through batch boron adsorption experiments, where MIL-100(Al) exhibited the highest S of 1.618 and MIL-100(Sc) achieved the largest Q of 8.74 g-B/mol-MOF. A high correlation between metal atomic radius and performance was revealed and a plausible mechanism was proposed for boron adsorption and isotopic separation involving the important role of the metal center through post-adsorption characterization. This study will pave the way for designing boron adsorbents with improved properties and promote the efficient utilization of boron resources in water.

Preparation of macroporous hybrid monoliths via iron-based MOFs-stabilized CO2-in-water HIPEs and use for β-amylase immobilization

Chao Ma,Jide Wang,Liqin Cao

The current study reports the utilization of MIL-100(Fe) as Pickering emulsifiers to stabilize CO 2 -in-water high internal phase emulsions, thereby synthesizing interconnected macroporous hybrid monoliths with adjustable pore sizes. During such a green synthesis procedure, the influences of Fe-MOF type and content, carbon dioxide density, and the amount of crosslinker have been explored respectively. The as-synthesized MOF-containing poly(HIPE)s were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, CLSM, and TGA. The morphology of the monoliths was mainly observed by EDS-mapping and SEM, which showed that Fe-MOFs were uniformly distributed into the monolithic matrix and the void sizes and interconnected pore sizes were 20 to 150 μm and 5 to 50 μm, respectively. Furthermore, the MIL-100(Fe)-containing monoliths exhibited an excellent elasticity and can quickly return to their original state when reaching up to 90% compressive strain without failing. To evaluate the adsorptive properties of the composite monoliths, the immobilization of β-amylase on the obtained monoliths was studied. The results of immobilized enzymes showed that the highest protein adsorption rate can reach 55% and the immobilization efficiency can reach 89%. Since our synthetic route is clean and controllable, biocompatible monoliths with good elasticity and toughness were prepared, which presents a viable strategy to produce hybrid monoliths for bio-medical applications.

Controlled Construction of Cu(I) Sites within Confined Spaces via Host–Guest Redox: Highly Efficient Adsorbents for Selective CO Adsorption

Yu-Xia Li,Yu-Nong Ji,Meng-Meng Jin,Shi-Chao Qi,Shuai-Shuai Li,Ding-Ming Xue,Ming Bo Yue,Xiao-Qin Liu,Lin-Bing Sun

Here, we designed a double-solvent/host–guest redox combined strategy to construct Cu+ sites in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for the first time. As a proof of concept, a representative MOF MIL-100(Fe) with tunable valence states of cations was employed as the host. The combined strategy realizes selective introduction of Cu2+ precursors to the interior pores of MIL-100(Fe), remarkably minimizing the aggregation of Cu2+ and subsequently formed Cu+ species. Owing to the proper reducibility of in situ formed Fe2+ in the frameworks, controlled conversation of Cu2+ to Cu+ with ∼100% yield is achieved in the absence of any additional reducing agents. These characteristics make the obtained materials Cu+-modified MIL-100(Fe) highly active in selective CO adsorption. The CO adsorption capacity is up to 3.75 mmol·g–1 at 298 K and 1 bar, which is superior to all other Cu+-containing adsorbents reported so far such as CuCl/activated carbon (2.5 mmol·g–1), CuCl/γ-Al2O3 (1.0 mmol·g–1), and CuCl/SBA-15 (0.50 mmol·g–1). The same adsorbent also exhibits quite high selectivity of CO over N2, and the ideal adsorption solution theory selectivity reaches 424. The outstanding CO adsorption performance make the present adsorbents great potential in separation of CO from various mixtures.

Structure-performance relationship of silane-grafted MIL-100(In) membranes for liquid organic hydrogen carrier separation

Yuqi Zhu,Rongbo Li,Zemin Li,Yawei Gu,Rujing Hou,Yichang Pan

Eight silane coupling agents are grafted onto MIL-100(In) membranes for TOL/MCH pervaporation. • Cyclohexyl-configured silane with amine group enables superior TOL/MCH recognition. • Configurational effects maximize binding energy difference, boosting separation factor by 175%. • Two-stage process achieves flux of 402 g·m −2 ·h −1 and separation factor of 8.1. Hydrogen is recognized as a promising green energy carrier, yet its large-scale transportation remains a critical challenge. Toluene/methylcyclohexane (TOL/MCH) serves as a safe and cost-effective liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC), but practical deployment is constrained by inefficient post-dehydrogenation separation. Membrane-based separation offers a potential solution; however, most existing membranes lack sufficient molecular discrimination capability for these two analogues. In this work, MIL-100(In), a metal-organic framework with intrinsic adsorption selectivity toward TOL and MCH, was selected as the membrane substrate. A series of silane coupling agents with and without amino functionality and varying molecular configurations were grafted onto the membrane surface. Remarkably, the three-dimensional saturated cyclohexyl configuration outperforms the planar phenyl group in molecular discrimination among the amino-bearing silanes, overturning the conventional preference for aromatic functionalities. As a result, the separation factor of the MIL-100(In) membrane is enhanced by 175% upon surface modification. Complementary molecular simulations reveal that the spatial configuration of the grafted silane governs the recognition behavior toward aromatic and cycloalkane molecules, as corroborated by binding energy analysis and the minimum intermolecular contact distances obtained from energy-minimized conformations. These findings provide a mechanistic basis for tailoring membrane surface chemistry toward efficient LOHC separation Download: Download high-res image (333KB) Download: Download full-size image

SERS sensing platform based on MIL-100(Fe)@AgNPs for norepinephrine/adenosine monitoring in patient plasma

Peng Zhao,Kai Liu,Yueyan Li,Xiaofang Ban,Yuheng Wu,Jiaqi Liu,Xiaohong Wu,Ziyi Cheng,Fan Wang,Shuo Li,Feng Lin,Huifang Tang,Qingnan Zhao

The excessive activation of sympathetic nerve is closely related to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). In this study, we developed a novel MIL-100(Fe)@Ag surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for the simultaneous and effective detection of plasma norepinephrine (NE) and adenosine—two pivotal sympathetic hormones. The microscopic morphology and crystal structure of the substrate were characterized using techniques such as transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Mechanistically, the HOMO-LUMO energy levels of the detection molecules were calculated using Gaussian. The substrate realized a dual SERS enhancement mechanism through the synergistic effect of localized surface plasmon resonance and interfacial charge transfer. Consequently, the MIL-100(Fe)@Ag platform exhibited high-sensitivity quantitative detection capabilities for NE and adenosine: the detection limit for NE is 0.596 nmol/L; the detection limit for adenosine is 0.24 nmol/L. Crucially, when applied to patients with pheochromocytoma—a neuroendocrine tumor characterized by plasma catecholamine surges, this method achieved robust and stable detection of plasma NE. It offered comparable diagnostic accuracy to conventional mass spectrometry while significantly reducing analysis complexity. Therefore, this innovative strategy may hold great promise for the long-term, decentralized monitoring of sympathetic nerve activity in populations at risk for CVDs or related clinical disorders.

Defect-engineered amino-functionalized MIL-100(Fe) for enhanced photocatalytic peroxydisulfate activation and organic pollutant degradation

Zhaobo Wang,Tao Yu,Xiaomao Liu,Jinsheng Li,Xuanwen Liu,Rui Guo

To improve the performance of MIL-100(Fe) in the photo-peroxydisulfate (photo -PDS) degradation system, this study introduced the amino-containing bidentate ligand 5-aminoisophthalic acid (AIA) to simultaneously engineer structural defects and photosensitive sites, thereby synergistically enhancing both photocatalytic activity and metal-mediated catalytic capability. This study synthesized MIL-100(Fe) materials with varying AIA incorporation levels (denoted as M-x %NH₂) and systematically investigated the effects of AIA integration on the catalyst. Degradation experiments were performed in the photo-PDS system using rhodamine B (RhB) as a model pollutant. The results demonstrate that the introduction of AIA induced multiple advantageous effects in the photo-PDS process:1.It enhanced the visible-light absorption capacity;2.Improved the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers;3.Generated defects to increase metal active sites, thereby accelerating PDS activation. Among the samples, M-30 % NH₂ exhibited the optimal performance, achieving nearly complete degradation of RhB within 50 min. The pseudo-first-order rate constant (k) was three times higher than that of unmodified MIL-100(Fe). The catalyst retained approximately 90 % degradation efficiency after five consecutive cycles and demonstrated robust performance across pH 3–9, along with the capability to degrade diverse organic pollutants. Quenching experiments confirmed sulfate radicals (·SO 4 ⁻) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) as the main active species, and the degradation pathways were elucidated. This study provides foundational insights for modifying MIL-100(Fe) and developing high-efficiency PDS catalysts.

Magnetic solid-phase extraction using a mixture of two types of nanoparticles followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the determination of six phthalic acid esters in various water samples

Hui Li,Zhen Cao,Xiaolin Cao,Zejun Jiang,A. M. Abd El-Aty,Yan Qi,Hua Shao,Fen Jin,Lufei Zheng,Jing Wang

Two types of magnetic microspheres (Fe3O4@MIL-100 and Fe3O4@SiO2@polythiophene) were prepared and characterized as mixed sorbents for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of six phthalic acid esters (PAEs), including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), and di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) from water samples prior to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The synthetic magnetic nanocomposites exhibited good repeatability and chemical stability, and improved extraction efficiency for the tested PAEs. The mixture of the two types of nanoparticles substantially improved the extraction efficiency of both DMP and DEP. The key parameters affecting the extraction efficiency, such as the type and the amount of sorbent, eluent (desorption solvent), adsorption and desorption time, pH of sample solution, and sample volume, were investigated and optimized, respectively. Under optimized conditions, the developed method showed satisfactory linearity in the range of 5–5000 μg L−1 with coefficients of determination (R2) > 0.9935. The method detection limits (MDLs) and limits of quantitation (LOQs) were between 0.35–0.91 μg L−1 and 1.1–2.9 μg L−1, respectively. At three fortification levels (1.0, 10.0, and 50.0 μg L−1), the mean recoveries ranged from 76.9–109.1% with favorable relative standard deviations (RSDs) < 9%. The feasibility of the method was evaluated by analysis of water samples from various sources (tap, drinking, and mineral water). The results show that the developed method is suitable for determination of trace level PAEs in water samples.

Novel metal-organic frameworks-based hydrogen sulfide cataluminescence sensors

Xiangyu Wan,Liqian Wu,Lichun Zhang,Hongjie Song,Yi Lv

In the present work, a novel H 2 S cataluminescence (CTL) sensor based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was established. Four MOFs, including MIL-100(Fe), MIL-101(Cr), Zn 3 (BTC) 2 ·12H 2 O and ZIF-8 were tested as CTL sensing materials. Among them, MIL-100(Fe) showed high CTL intensity for H 2 S, but it would be damaged after CTL experiment. MIL-101(Cr) showed just a low CTL signal and also destructed after contacting with H 2 S. Excitingly, Zn 3 (BTC) 2 ·12H 2 O and ZIF-8 displayed good sensitivity and stability for H 2 S. Then, the CTL characteristics and optimal parameters of these two MOFs were investigated in detail and the possible CTL mechanism was also discussed. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration curves of CTL intensity versus H 2 S concentration have linear regression coefficients ( R ) of >0.99 at low concentration, which renders MOFs interesting candidates for constructing H 2 S CTL sensor.
