Flexible and Scalable Magnesium Replenishment in NCM Cathode Enabled by Mobile Mg2+ Enriched MgV2O4

Qiaoling Qiu,Jiafeng Ruan,Wei Zhou,Wenqiang Hu,Wei Wu,Jichao Zhang,Fang Fang,Dalin Sun,Jiahe Zang,Yun Song

A small amount of Mg 2+ doping can show a significant effect on the surface protection and structural stability of the nickel-rich layered oxide cathode, but the traditional doping process involves completely changing the initial raw material proportions with subsequent trial and error adjustments. Herein, a concept of Mg 2+ release film is proposed, in which Mg 2+ can easily permeate into various layered oxide cathodes during cycling. Meanwhile, to realize this concept, MgV 2 O 4 with mobile Mg 2+ in the structures and then fabricated a self-supporting MgV 2 O 4 membrane are synthesized. As a protective layer for cathode, the MgV 2 O 4 membrane release Mg 2+ in situ during the electrochemical process, providing structural reinforcement to the cathode surface as a “pillar” within the lattice. Thanks to the MgV 2 O 4 membrane, the cycle life of LiNi o.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) coupled with the MgV 2 O 4 interlayer at 1.0 C is increased by 1.9 times compared to bare NCM811. Furthermore, this novel Mg 2+ releasing film demonstrates excellent versatility, enabling other nickel-based layered oxide to achieve a high-capacity retention of 86.4% after 800 cycles at 1.0 C. This approach provides scalable cathode protection and repair strategies for commercially viable batteries.

Enhanced nanofiltration membranes for Mg2+/Li+ separation: Development of a polyethyleneimine positively charged interlayer

Hongsen Hui,Huiying Ding,Quan Liu,Haisong Zhao,Jian Hou,Lei Zhang,Hongchang Pei,Xianhui Li

Polyamide thin film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membrane possessing excellent permeance and monovalent/multivalent ions selectivity is eager for Mg 2+ /Li + separation. To achieve this purpose, we developed a TFC NF membrane with high water permeance, Mg 2+ rejection, as well as satisfied Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor by conducting the interfacial polymerization (IP) with polyethyleneimine (PEI600) and 1,3,5,-benzenetricarbonyl (TMC) on a positively charged interlayer constructed on PES/SPSF blending ultrafiltration substrate. On the one hand, the hydrophilic electropositivity interlayer can increase aqueous monomer adsorption capacity and inhibit the monomer diffusion rate, facilitating the formation of a thin separation layer. Therefore, the obtained NF-8 membrane exhibits the highest permeance of 8.8 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , which is 2.8 times compared with the NF-0 membrane (3.1 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) prepared on PES-based substrate. On the other hand, the positively charged interlayer also imparts the NF-8 membrane a higher isoelectric point (IEP) of 7.9, as well as satisfied Mg 2+ rejection of 97.1 % and Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor of 87.1. This work demonstrates that the water permeance and ions selectivity of the TFC NF membrane can be enhanced by constructing a positively charged interlayer.

Mg2+ in drinking water boosts Salmonella infection risk by rewiring gut ecology and virulence

Liu Tanghao,Dong Tao,Zhang Ting,Bai Xiaohui

The mineral content in drinking water is an emerging regulator of intestinal health. While certain mineral waters are generally considered beneficial, their health effects under enteric infection conditions remain unclear. Here we show that Mg 2+ in drinking water exacerbates inflammation caused by enteric pathogen Salmonella Typhimurium via two interlinked mechanisms: direct activation of its key bacterial competition machinery type VI secretion system (T6SS) and indirect amplification through inflammation-driven dysbiosis. Mg 2+ depletes beneficial Akkermansia and enriches Bacteroides , elevating pro-inflammatory bile acids and arginine that enhance T6SS-mediated competitive fitness. These effects vary with host health and water sources. Our findings support the use of low-mineral water for vulnerable groups during infection risk periods, establishing Mg 2+ in drinking water as a modifiable risk factor for infectious enteritis.

Synergistic interfacial polymerization mediated by in-situ bubbles and surfactant for Mg2+/Li+ separation

Yi Yuan,Tong Wu,Lijuan Hu,Yajie Ding,Jianqiang Wang,Fu Liu

Nanofiltration membranes were prepared by regulating monomer diffusion. • Nanofiltration membranes with tailored pore distribution and thinner structure achieved • Nanofiltration membranes exhibit an exceptional Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity of 173. • Nanofiltration membranes exhibit a high water permeance of 15.4 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . Amid the urgent demand for lithium resources driven by the global carbon neutrality goals and the rapid development of the new energy industry, efficiently separating and extracting lithium from salt lakes has emerged as a challenge. Current nanofiltration membranes exhibit issues such as low selectivity, limited permeance, and broad pore size distribution in Li + /Mg 2+ separation. This study proposes a novel strategy for the synergistic control of interfacial polymerization by combining electrically generated in-situ bubbles with surfactants. Electrolysis of water generates negatively charged hydrogen bubbles that attract positively charged amine monomers via electrostatic interaction. Synergized by electric field forces and the buoyancy of the bubbles, the amines are transported to the water/hexane interface for enrichment. Meanwhile, a surfactant added to the oil phase forms a monolayer at the oil-water interface, reducing surface tension and promoting the diffusion of the amine monomers. These mechanisms synergistically modulate interfacial polymerization kinetics, optimizing polyamide density and pore size distribution. The resulting membrane demonstrates an excellent Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity of 173 and high water permeance of 15.4 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . This work presents a novel and feasible strategy that holds promise for achieving large-scale production and advancing the development of efficient lithium extraction technologies from salt lake brine.

Aqueous Synthesis of Ionic Covalent Organic Framework Nanosheets towards Membrane-Based Li+/Mg2+ Separation

Deng Hao,Zhu Yong,Xu Kai,Pang Xiao,Lu Yanqiu,Zheng Yu,Wang Ying,Lyu Bohui,Zhang Runnan,Jiang Zhongyi,Zhang Sui

Covalent organic framework (COF) nanosheets are ideal building blocks for fabricating high-performance membranes. The production of COF nanosheets in water is a significant step towards sustainable synthesis but remains an unresolved challenge. Herein, we report an aqueous synthesis method for COF nanosheets via a group capping-decapping strategy. The in-plane-dominated COF growth is driven by two factors: first, capping of aldehyde groups with secondary amines enhances monomer solubility in water for homogeneous nucleation; second, the presence of ionic groups on amine monomers suppresses out-of-plane stacking via electrostatic repulsion. By adjusting Brønsted acids or bases concentrations, the decapping rate and the subsequent COF polymerization rate can be tuned, enabling precise control over the reaction kinetics. Consequently, highly crystalline ionic COF nanosheets can be mildly synthesized in water with high volumetric yield and at a gram scale. The COF composite membranes assembled from nanosheets and polyethylenimine exhibit high selectivity and outstanding Li + recovery efficiency for Li + /Mg 2+ separation. Furthermore, the excellent processability of COF nanosheets is demonstrated by fabricating the tubular membrane module.

Assessment of commercial NF membranes for selective separation of Mg2+/Li+ in simulated brines

Tian-tian Xue,Jian-wei Jia,Fan-xin Kong,Li-ping Yue,Guang-dong Sun,Jin-fu Chen

Positive surface charge dominates Mg 2+ /Li + selectivity in commercial NF membranes. • The DK membrane achieves a separation factor of 24.6 at a Mg 2+ /Li + ratio of 150. • A narrow pore size distribution is key to achieving precise ion sieving. • The DSPM&DE model predicts performance by quantifying volume charge density (χ). The efficient extraction of lithium from salt lake brines characterized by high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios presents a significant challenge in sustainable resource recovery. This study presented a systematic evaluation of six commercial nanofiltration (NF) membranes (GH, GT, NF90, NF270, DK, SelRO). Quantitative analysis revealed a moderate positive correlation between the surface amine group density and the Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor (up to 24.6), establishing amine density as a key descriptor for selectivity. Higher amine density yielded a more positive surface charge, which enhanced Donnan exclusion of Mg 2+ . Membranes exhibiting a positive surface charge (DK, SelRO, GT) achieved superior Mg 2+ rejection (>90%) and high separation factors. In particular, the DK membrane exhibited a separation factor of 24.6 at a Mg 2+ /Li + ratio of 150, attributable to enhanced Donnan exclusion of divalent cations. Furthermore, the pore size distribution emerged as a critical determinant of selectivity, wherein narrow distributions (e.g., Sₚ  = 0.26 for the GT membrane) significantly enhanced separation precision. The Donnan Steric Partitioning Model with Dielectric Exclusion accurately predicted separation performance (error <15%), identifying volume charge density as the dominant factor. This work established a quantitative correlation between surface amine density and Mg 2+ /Li + separation performance, providing practical insights for membrane selection and future membrane design. Staged interfacial reaction for regulating polyamide selective layer formation toward efficient Mg2+/Li+ separation

Zhongbiao Wang,Qiuyan Bi,Xin Shi,Zizhen Peng,Zhicheng Wang,Wenzhong Ma,Yakai Lin,Shiai Xu

In this work, we proposed a staged interfacial reaction strategy to regulate the formation of the polyamide selective layer by separating nascent-layer formation from subsequent densification, thereby addressing the mismatch between monomer diffusion and reaction kinetics in conventional interfacial polymerization (IP) and enabling high permeability and selectivity in nanofiltration (NF) membranes for Mg 2+ /Li + separation. The optimized membrane (SIP) was fabricated using 0.2 wt% BAPP and 0.1 wt% TMC for 120 s in Stage-I, followed by 0.5 wt% BAPP for 120 s in Stage-II. Compared with membranes prepared by conventional one-step IP, the SIP membrane exhibited a thinner selective layer (14.89 ± 1.16 nm), a higher amide-related O C–N content (50.96 at%), a more favorable hydration state, and a lower molecular weight cut-off (330 Da), indicating the formation of a thinner yet more compact and uniform polyamide network. Benefiting from these tailored structural and physicochemical features, the SIP membrane exhibited robust Mg 2+ /Li  +  separation over a broad range of feed Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratios, with high Mg 2+ rejection, low Li + rejection, and stable water flux. During long-term filtration tests, the Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio in the permeate remained below 0.68, while the Mg 2+ rejection and separation factor were maintained at 95.57%–97.79% and 25.50–35.34, respectively. These results demonstrate that the staged interfacial reaction strategy is an effective platform for regulating polyamide selective layer formation and offers a promising route for lithium extraction from brines with high Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratios.

Tailoring subnanometer transport pathways in polyamide nanofiltration membranes for high-permeance Li+/Mg2+ separation

Zhicheng Wang,Xin Shi,Zizhen Peng,Wenzhong Ma,Yakai Lin,Hideto Matsuyama,Qiuyan Bi

A SISAIP strategy was developed to regulate interfacial PA formation. • SDS/NaCl regulation produced ultrathin PA layers with sub-nanometer pathways. • The membrane achieved S Li, Mg of 90.9 and permeance of 9.5 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 . • Stable operation and strong flux recovery were obtained under brine-relevant tests. The rapidly increasing global demand for lithium has stimulated the development of advanced membrane technologies for lithium extraction from salt-lake brines. Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with precisely regulated subnanometer transport pathways are highly attractive for Li + /Mg 2+ separation; however, the rational construction of selective layers that simultaneously deliver high ion selectivity and fast water transport remains challenging. Herein, we report a scalable surfactant–inorganic salt–assisted interfacial polymerization (IP) strategy, termed SISAIP, to fabricate high-performance polyamide NF membranes. Interfacial tension, dynamic light scattering, and UV–vis analyses indicated that sodium dodecyl sulfate enriched at the water/oil interface and regulated PEI transport across the interface, whereas NaCl modified the aqueous-phase microenvironment, moderated PEI diffusion toward the interface, and helped confine the interfacial reaction zone. This coordinated regulation produced an ultrathin PA selective layer with an apparent thickness of 11.2 ± 0.6 nm and compact subnanometer transport pathways. The optimized membrane achieved a water permeance of 9.5 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , an S Li,Mg of 90.9, and Mg 2+ rejection above 99.5%, corresponding to 578.6% and 437.9% increases in water permeance and S Li,Mg over the control T-IP membrane, respectively. The membrane also maintained stable performance during 120 h of continuous filtration and exhibited favorable fouling/scaling resistance, with a flux recovery ratio of 100% under organic-conditioned CaSO 4 scaling conditions. This SISAIP strategy provides a promising and scalable route for designing advanced NF membranes toward efficient lithium recovery from salt-lake brines.

Efficient separation of Mg2+/Li+ using reduced GO membranes modified by positively charged arginine

Junbo Wang,Jie Jiang,Jing Wang,Shouyuan Hu,Jiahao Hu,Yalong Li,Zhiyu Tao,Chengju Wu,Pei Li,Liang Chen

Nanofiltration has emerged as an effective technique for the selective separation of mono- and divalent ions, such as Mg2+/Li+ mixtures, and plays a crucial role in lithium extraction from salt lakes. In this study, a graphene oxide (GO) membrane with positively charged channels was prepared by crosslinking arginine (Arg) onto GO nanosheets, followed by vacuum filtration to form the membrane, and then thermal reduction (Arg-rGO). The Arg-rGO membrane exhibits high performance in the ion separation of a typical brine with a Mg2+/Li+ mass ratio of 20. The separation factor (SLi/Mg) reached up to 45.6—two times the highest separation factor reported—while maintaining an advanced water permeance of 21.3 L m−2 h−1 bar−1. Furthermore, the Mg2+/Li+ mass ratio was reduced from 20 to 0.2 after two-stage crossflow filtration with high flux under high pressure. The observed separation performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of electrostatic repulsion and size-exclusion. These findings confirmed efficient separation of Mg2+/Li+ using GO membranes, demonstrating potential for practical application in lithium extraction from salt lakes.

Positively charged nanofiltration membranes via ion-track technology for high-efficiency Mg2+/Li+ separation

Mengling Fang,Zhigang Ning,Jiao Tang,Qinggang Huang,Muhammad Junaid,Yiming Qian,Xuanlin Li,Xin Huang,Haizhou Xue,Jinglai Duan,Jie Liu,Huijin Yao

The escalating demand for lithium-ion batteries necessitates efficient extraction technologies for lithium-rich brines, where the formidable challenge lies in selectively separating Li + from ubiquitous Mg 2+ ions due to their similar sizes. This work addresses this critical separation bottleneck by engineering a high-performance positively charged nanofiltration membrane. We leverage ion-track technology to fabricate a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate featuring vertically aligned, uniformly distributed nanochannels and a hydrophilic, carboxyl-functionalized surface. This optimized substrate facilitates the controlled interfacial polymerization of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl chloride (TMC), resulting in a defect-free, robust polyamide selective layer with strong interfacial adhesion. The resultant PEI-TMC/PET-5 membrane exhibits exceptional separation performance, achieving a remarkably high water permeance of 7.6 L m −2  h −1 bar −1 coupled with an outstanding Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor of 29.6. Comprehensive analysis reveals that this superior selectivity stems from the synergistic interplay of the Donnan effect and dielectric exclusion: the membrane's strong positive surface charge electrostatically repels divalent Mg 2+ more effectively than monovalent Li + , while the dielectric discontinuity at the membrane-solution interface imposes significantly higher Born solvation energy and image charge forces on Mg 2+ due to its greater charge density. Critically, the membrane demonstrates notable long-term stability, maintaining 94.5 % Mg 2+ rejection and a stable permeance of 5.1 L m −2  h −1 bar −1 over 720 h of continuous filtration. Under simulated brine conditions (Mg 2+ /Li +  = 80:1, 2000 ppm), it further sustains stable performance over two weeks of operation, with a S Li / Mg of 28.8. This study presents a rational substrate-to-active-layer design strategy, underpinned by fundamental insights into ion transport mechanisms, paving the way for scalable and energy-efficient membrane technologies for sustainable lithium extraction from high-magnesium brines.

Transient Hyperoxia-Generating Interface Coupled with Mg2+ Delivery Reprograms Osteoimmune Microenvironment for Enhancing Osseointegration

Xuezhe Liu,Xingan Qiu,Pengren Peng,Qiqi Lv,Meijun Tan,Liangshuai Zhang,Qian Feng,Kaiyong Cai

Implants fail due to aseptic loosening remains a critical challenge in orthopedic surgery. This condition arises from poor early-stage osseointegration caused by the bioinert implant interface. Designing immune-active implant coating to timely create a regenerative osteoimmune microenvironment is a recent approach to promote new bone formation. Here, the transient hyperoxia-generating interface coupled with Mg 2+ delivery is developed for the titanium (Ti) to steer osseointegration. This design achieves strong adhesion (388.5 kPa) of the hydrogel coating, ensuring the interfacial stability. Under hypoxic conditions, the engineered interface mitigates cell death and promotes the shift from pro-inflammatory M1 to regenerative M2 macrophages. This immune transition enhances osteogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and angiogenesis of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in vitro. Meanwhile, this modified surface demonstrates superior osseointegration results, with histological evidence showing earlier M2 macrophage existence and coordinated bone-vessel growth around the implants. By regulating natural bone healing phases—transient hyperbaric oxygen signaling synergies with Mg 2 ⁺ release for faster inflammation resolution—this platform creates a self-sustaining regenerative niche without exogenous biologics. The results provide a clinically viable strategy to improve implant integration by modulating the osteoimmune microenvironment.

Turing-structured polyamide membranes with surface charge engineering for high-efficiency Mg2+/Li+ separation

Guoke Zhao,Jie Sun,Gongqing Tang,Yang Zhang,Guoyuan Pan,Yiqun Liu

To address the critical challenge of lithium extraction from high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio brines, this study develops a high-performance separation membrane through synergistic regulation of binary and ternary acyl chloride monomers combined with a bis-quaternary ammonium salt surface modification strategy. Optimizing the ratio of terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) to trimesoyl chloride (TMC) facilitates the formation of a periodic stripe Turing structure on the piperazine-based polyamide membrane's surface, markedly increasing the effective permeation area and water flux. The study reveals that adjusting the TPC ratio finely tunes the polyamide network's crosslinking density, thereby affecting the size exclusion effect. Additionally, TPC incorporation, by diminishing surface carboxyl density, enhances the membrane's surface positive charge, significantly improving its Li + permeability and Mg 2+ rejection capabilities. The optimized TPC-20 membrane demonstrates exceptional ion selectivity, achieving a MgCl 2 rejection of 91.3 %, a LiCl rejection of 11.3 %, and a water flux of 61 LMH. Further enhancement via amino-terminated bis-quaternary ammonium salt (ATBAS) grafting achieves 98.7 % Mg 2+ rejection, a record Li + negative rejection of -37.3 %, and a Mg 2+ /Li + selectivity of 105.1. Extended testing for 120 h verifies the membrane's reliable performance, highlighting its potential for industrial application. This research provides an efficient and energy-saving membrane separation solution for lithium extraction from brines.
