Multiple catalysts have exhibited high activity on improving the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . Herein, the hydrogen ab/desorption kinetics of MgH 2 is significantly improved by using Ni@C@CeO 2 as the catalyst. The results show that 10 wt%-Ni@C@CeO 2 doped MgH 2 can absorb 4.51 wt% hydrogen within 60 min under low temperature 75 °C. Furthermore, the MgH 2 -Ni@C@CeO 2 composites release approximately 4.88 wt% H 2 within 10 min at 325 °C. Moreover, the composites show excellent cycling performance, with negligible decrease in hydrogen storage capacity, hydrogen uptake rate and hydrogen release rate after ten cycles at 350 °C. The Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction and transmittance electron microscopy measurements reveal that Mg 2 NiH 4 /Mg 2 Ni and CeH 2.73 phases are in-situ formed. The mutual conversion of “Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 ” during hydrogen ab/desorption is a well-known “hydrogen pump” effect, which improvs the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . The presence of CeH 2.73 accelerate the conversion of Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 , which we call ‘facilitated hydrogen pump’ effect. This attempt paves a potential way to achieve high performance Mg-based composites hydrogen storage materials via collaborative action between Ni and Ce species.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) with high gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity is considered as one of the most potential hydrogen storage materials ; however, its development has been plagued by the high operating temperature and slow kinetics. In this study, we have design and synthesize a core-shell Ni/Fe 3 O 4 @MIL additive to aid the (de)hydrogenation of MgH 2 /Mg system via the co-catalytic effect of in-situ formed Mg 2 NiH 4 /Mg 2 Ni and Fe. The initial dehydrogenation temperature significantly reduces from 613 K to 517 K, and the MgH 2 -Ni/Fe 3 O 4 @MIL composite can reabsorb 4.17 wt% H 2 within 3600 s under 3.0 MPa H 2 at 373 K. Remarkably, the dehydrogenation activation energy of the composite decreases by 61.77 kJ/mol compared to the pure MgH 2 (159.71 kJ/mol). Moreover, the composite also shows good cycling stability without distinct capacity decay after cycling twenty times. Studies show that during dehydrogenation and hydrogenation processes, the Mg 2 NiH 4 /Mg 2 Ni act as catalysts to induce hydrogen desorption/absorption of MgH 2 /Mg. Meanwhile, the unique core-shell structure of the Ni/Fe 3 O 4 @MIL not only provides reaction sites, but also prevents the agglomeration of nanoparticles and maintains stable catalytic activity. This study provides a new idea for designing stable transition metal heterogeneous catalytic system to improve hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 .

MgH 2 , as one of the typical solid-state hydrogen storage materials, has attracted extensive attention. However, the slow kinetics and poor cycle stability limit its application. In this work, LiBH 4 and YNi 5 alloy were co-added as additives to MgH 2 via ball milling, thereby realizing an excellent dehydrogenation performance and good cycle stability at 300 °C. The MgH 2 -0.04LiBH 4 -0.01YNi 5 composite can release 7 wt.% of hydrogen in around 10 min at 300 °C and still have a reversible hydrogen storage capacity of 6.42 wt.% after 110 cycles, with a capacity retention rate as high as 90.3 % based on the second dehydrogenation capacity. The FTIR results show that LiBH 4 can reversibly absorb and desorb hydrogen throughout the hydrogen ab/desorption process, which contributes a portion of the reversible hydrogen storage capacity to the MgH 2 -0.04LiBH 4 -0.01YNi 5 composite. Due to the small amount of LiBH 4 and YNi 5 , the dehydrogenation activation energy of MgH 2 did not decrease significantly, nor did the dehydrogenation enthalpy (∆ H ) change. However, the MgNi 3 B 2 and in-situ formed YH 3 during the hydrogen absorption/desorption cycles is not only beneficial to the improvement of the kinetics performance for MgH 2 but also improves its cycle stability. This work provides a straightforward method for developing high reversible hydrogen capacity on Mg-based hydrogen storage materials with moderate kinetic performance.

Improving desorption kinetics and achieving thermodynamic destabilization of MgH2 is of great importance for its practical applications. In the present study, a MgH2–In composite was synthesized through high-energy ball milling of MgH2 and In, and microstructures; hydrogen ab/desorption properties of the composite were carefully investigated with respect to the identically processed pure MgH2. The thermodynamic destabilization of MgH2 was achieved through reversible phase transformation of Mg(In) solid solution due to the partial solubility of In in Mg lattice (11 atom %), which resulted in lower enthalpy values and reduced desorption temperatures. X-ray diffraction peak analysis revealed the presence of internal stress/strain fields caused by the lattice mismatch between Mg and indium, which could play an important role in improving the desorption properties of the composite. Hydrogen evolution of the MgH2–In composite was directly observed via an in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM), which shows the “hydrogen pump” effect of a Mg3In phase which is stable only under a hydrogen environment. The formation mechanism of the Mg3In phase and its role as “hydrogen pump” in the improvements of desorption kinetics are thoroughly discussed based on the TEM observations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Hydrogen storage in the solid state is considered a key technology for developing commercial applications of hydrogen energy. With the addition of efficient nanocatalysts, magnesium (Mg) is a promising approach for overcoming the threshold for hydrogen storage materials. Mg–Ni–Ti3C2 composites were created in this study by integrating nanoscale nickel (Ni) and Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets with Mg particles using a mechanical ball milling process. Compared with incorporating Ni nanoparticles or Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets alone, the combination of Ni and Ti3C2Tx MXene enhanced the dehydrogenation performance of magnesium hydride (MgH2). The ideal combination of a rapid hydrogen uptake/release rate and high hydrogen storage capability was achieved by properly controlling the proportion of additives. The prepared Mg–2Ni/Ti3C2 composite possessed superior hydrogen storage properties, releasing 3.96 wt % hydrogen at 300 °C, whereas additive-free Mg released almost no hydrogen under the same conditions. Furthermore, Mg–2Ni/Ti3C2 absorbed 3.16 wt % hydrogen even at 275 °C. The Mg–2Ni/Ti3C2 composite exhibited a dehydrogenation activation energy of 75.0 kJ mol–1, which was 60.4 kJ mol–1 less than that of pristine Mg. After 10 cycles, 96.1% of the hydrogen capacity was retained, exhibiting a superior cycling stability. According to the catalytic mechanism study, the surprisingly enhanced hydrogen storage property of MgH2 is attributed to the “hydrogen pump” effect of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 combined with the catalytic, “facilitated hydrogen pump,” and confinement roles of Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is a promising candidate for solid-state hydrogen storage due to its high theoretical capacity, but its application is limited by high desorption temperatures and sluggish sorption kinetics. In this work, we developed leaf-carbon-supported FeCo bimetallic nanocatalysts (FeCo/C(b)) via a facile impregnation–pyrolysis route and incorporated them into MgH 2 through high-energy ball milling. The resulting MgH 2 +10 wt% FeCo/C(b) composite exhibited a dramatically reduced onset desorption temperature of 200 °C and delivered 6.46 wt% H2 within 20 min at 300 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed a desorption peak shift of ∼101 °C and a ∼19 % reduction in apparent activation energy compared with pristine MgH 2 , highlighting the pronounced kinetic improvement. Remarkably, rehydrogenation initiated at only 60 °C, with rapid uptake of ∼6.37 wt% at 175 °C under 3 MPa H 2 , and the composite maintained >99 % capacity retention after 10 cycles. Microstructural characterizations confirmed the homogeneous dispersion and stability of FeCo/C(b) in the MgH 2 matrix, while interfacial mismatch and defect engineering were identified as the key factors facilitating hydrogen diffusion. This study demonstrates that biomass-derived carbon supports, combined with Fe–Co synergistic catalysis, offer an effective and sustainable strategy to achieve low-temperature, reversible hydrogen storage in MgH 2 .

MgH 2 is one of the most potential hydrogen storage material with a high gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity. however, its applications have been plagued by its high operating temperature and the relatively poor kinetics for releasing and absorbing hydrogen. In the present study, nanoconfinement or catalytic doping were introduced to improve de/rehydrogenation kinetic properties of MgH 2 . The MgH 2 @Ni-CNTs was fabricated by holding the MgH 2 particles on the surface of the CNT-Ni. MgH 2 supported by carbon nanotubes loaded with Ni nanoparticles (MgH 2 @Ni-CNTs) shows a superior H 2 de/ab-sorption kinetics than that of MgH 2 . This nano-composite releases H 2 at 250 °C with the dehydrogenation capacity of 7.29 wt% within 60 min. The dehydrogenation E a of MgH 2 in MgH 2 @Ni-CNTs is reduced to 74.8 kJ/mol by the confining and catalytic impact of Ni-CNTs. It also has a significant improvement on rehydriding kinetics, with a 7.20 wt% H 2 absorption in 30 min even at a temperature as low as 200 °C. Moreover, the MgH 2 @Ni-CNTs also shows good cycling stability without distinct capacity decay after cycling ten times. Studies show that during dehydrogenation and hydrogenation processes , the CNTs-Ni act as confining framework and catalyst, can accelerate diffusion of hydrogen and prevent the Mg/MgH 2 agglomeration. The application of this novel MgH 2 @Ni-CNTs extends the horizon of transition metallic catalyst and nanoconfinement, and offers a novel way to enhance the hydrogen storage property of the nanoconfined MgH 2 .

MgH 2 is recognized as an exceptionally promising solid-state material for hydrogen storage, but its high thermodynamic stability, slow kinetics, and cycling-induced particle coarsening remain major obstacles to practical application. In this study, a composite oxide catalyst, Nb 2 O 5 @TiO 2 -C, was synthesized via a hydrothermal route by loading nano-Nb 2 O 5 onto a TiO 2 -C support derived from a Ti-based metal- organic framework. Doping with Nb 2 O 5 @TiO 2 -C markedly enhances the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . Carbon within the support effectively suppresses nanoparticle agglomeration, while the catalyst is partially reduced to low-valence species during de/rehydrogenation cycles, both contributing to the enhanced performance. The MgH 2 -7 wt.% Nb 2 O 5 @TiO 2 -C composite starts dehydrogenating at 210.6 °C. At 300 °C, it rapidly releases over 6 wt% hydrogen within 5 min. The dehydrogenated sample also exhibits fast absorption kinetics, absorbing 6 wt% hydrogen within 1 min at 200 °C under 30 bar H 2 . Moreover, the system shows excellent cycling stability, retaining a hydrogen capacity of 6.6 wt% after 20 cycles.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is a solid-state hydrogen storage material with promising applications. However, its slow hydrogen release rate at low temperatures (<573 K) and high hydrogen release energy barrier severely limit its practical applications. In this work, a bimetallic oxide (cubic NaNbO 3 ) with side length of 1–10 μm was derived from Nb 2 CT x MXene through a simple hydrothermal reaction, which has a high catalytic activity. The MgH 2 -5 wt% NaNbO 3 composite can rapidly release 6.18 wt% H 2 in 12 min at 260 °C and uptake 3.45 wt% H 2 in 90 min at 30 °C. The activation energy for dehydrogenation (E a ) of MgH 2 -5 wt% NaNbO 3 composite was calculated to be 84.72 kJ/mol, which is much lower than that of milled MgH 2 (150.98 kJ/mol). In addition, hydrogenation and dehydrogenation cycling test results indicated that the composite material presents excellent stable cycling durability, with a capacity retention rate of 99.7 % after 40 cycles, with almost no capacity degradation. The excellent hydrogenation and dehydrogenation ability is mainly contributed by the combined effect of NaMgH 3 , NaNbO 3 , Nb metal and NbH x . The results of this work are instructive for the design of high-properties catalysts to enhance the hydrogen storage capacity of Mg/MgH 2 system.

A novel solid-solution MXene (Ti 0.5 V 0.5 ) 3 C 2 is successfully synthesized by exfoliating a solid-solution MAX phase (Ti 0.5 V 0.5 ) 3 AlC 2 , and its catalytic effect on the hydrogen storage reaction of Mg is systemically evaluated for the first time. Typical layer morphology is observed for the prepared (Ti 0.5 V 0.5 ) 3 C 2 , which exhibits a better catalytic activity than that of Ti 3 C 2 . The addition of 10 wt% (Ti 0.5 V 0.5 ) 3 C 2 remarkably reduces the dehydrogenation onset temperature of MgH 2 by 70 °C, from 266 to 196 °C. At 250 °C, approximately 5.0 wt% H 2 is released from the 10 wt% (Ti 0.5 V 0.5 ) 3 C 2 -containing MgH 2 within 20 min. The dehydrogenated sample rapidly absorbs 4.8 wt% H 2 within 5 s at 120 °C; these hydrogenation kinetics are much more superior even to the well-studied Nb 2 O 5 catalyst. The apparent activation energy is calculated to be 77.3 kJ/mol for the MgH 2 -10 wt% (Ti 0.5 V 0.5 ) 3 C 2 sample, which is only around half of that of the pristine MgH 2 (153.8 kJ/mol). This is responsible for the remarkably reduced dehydrogenation operating temperature. Moreover, the chemical states of (Ti 0.5 V 0.5 ) 3 C 2 during dehydrogenation are also analysed and discussed.

MgH 2 is a promising solid–state hydrogen storage material. However, its high thermodynamics and sluggish kinetics hinder its practical application. Catalytic strategy is effective in improving its kinetic performance. Nevertheless, the highly efficient catalysts or additives are normally of low-yield in fabrication with high cost. In this work, a novel structural LaVO 4 fabricated by a low-cost method of spraying dry followed by a calcination is used as a catalytic additive for the hydrogen storage of MgH 2 . With an optimized addition of LaVO 4 , the overall hydrogen storage performances of MgH 2 are significantly improved. An onset dehydrogenation temperature of only 183°C is obtained after an initial activation of dehydrogenation and hydrogenation. The system can desorb 5.7 wt% H 2 at 250°C within 10 min and maintains a dehydrogenation capacity of 5.0 wt% H 2 after 50 cycles. It is found that LaVO 4 is transferred to lanthanum hydride and metallic vanadium in the initial dehydrogenation process, the former acts as a highly effective catalyst for the hydrogen storage of MgH 2 and the latter undergoes reversible hydrogenation and dehydrogenation in the subsequent cycles. The structural design of the catalyst and its scalable fabrication are highly valuable in realizing the practical application of catalytic strategy for the hydrogen storage of MgH 2 .

Pristine Nb 2 C/Ti 3 C 2 dual MXenes enable composition-controlled MgH 2 catalysis. • A 1:2 Nb 2 C/Ti 3 C 2 ratio is optimal at only 5 wt% total catalyst loading. • 6.81 wt% H 2 is released within 3 min at 300 °C. • 4.56 wt% H 2 is absorbed within 20 s at 50 °C under 55 bar H 2 . • 91%/90% capacity is retained after 30 hydrogenation/dehydrogenation cycles. MXene catalysts can improve MgH 2 kinetics, but composition effects in dual pristine MXenes at fixed loading remain unclear. Here, Nb 2 C/Ti 3 C 2 was optimized by Nb 2 C etching time, single-MXene loading, mass ratio, and total loading. Nb 2 C etched for 70 h showed low residual Al, intact layers, and the highest surface area. At 5 wt% total catalyst, Nb 2 C:Ti 3 C 2 = 1:2 gave the best overall performance. It released 6.81 wt% H 2 in 3 min at 300 °C and 6.02 wt% in 10 min at 250 °C, and absorbed 4.56 wt% H 2 in 20 s at 50 °C under 55 bar H 2 . The apparent dehydrogenation activation energy was 71.25 ± 8.73 kJ·mol −1 , 53.7% below the MgH 2 reference. After 30 cycles, hydrogenation/dehydrogenation capacity retentions were 91%/90%. XRD and SEM confirmed reversible MgH 2 /Mg conversion and cycling-related morphology changes. XPS survey of the optimized dual-MXene composite confirmed the coexistence of Ti- and Nb-containing species, while reaction-state XPS of the individual Ti 3 C 2 - and Nb 2 C-containing composites showed reaction-dependent surface reconstruction. Together, these results support composition-dependent catalytic contributions, whereas simultaneous Ti-Nb reconstruction in the optimal dual system remains unverified.
