CuSO 4 is frequently employed as a control measure for the emergency treatment of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms. Concurrently, nano-plastics (NPs) have emerged as pervasive pollutants exacerbating the threat of eutrophication to aquatic ecosystem. However, there is little known regarding the influence of NPs on the efficacy of copper sulfate (CuSO 4 ) in controlling cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs). Here, we demonstrate that the co-existence of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs) exacerbates the negative effects of CuSO 4 to photosynthetic activity of Microcystis aeruginosa . This is caused via the differences in disrupting light energy absorption, inactivation of the reaction center, as well as disruptions in electron transport and metabolic pathways, which collectively induce oxidative stress and damage cell membrane. Treatment with either NPs or CuSO 4 alone results in the downregulation of carbon-fixation, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and pyruvate metabolism. Co-existence of NPs significantly influenced ABC transporters, carbon fixation, and the two-component system in M . aeruginosa . Notably, while single CuSO₄ treatment increased microcystin- leucine arginine (MC-LR) levels by 243.3 % relative to controls, combining CuSO₄ with NPs (PS, PS-NH₂, PS-COOH) significantly reduced MC-LR concentrations by 73.5 %, 90.2 %, and 70.7 %, respectively (p < 0.05). This study demonstrated that NPs exacerbated the oxidative stress induced by CuSO 4 on M . aeruginosa cell, while concurrently reducing MCs release. Furthermore, the underlying molecular mechanisms were systematically investigated. These findings provided novel insights into the crucial importance of considering NPs impact prior to the application of CuSO 4 for the management of (cyanoHABs).

The utilization of Microcystis biomass is an urgent issue in the mitigation of cyanobacterial bloom. In this study, Microcystis -derived biochar (MB) and Fe 3 O 4 -modified biochar (Fe 3 O 4 /MB) were fabricated for the U(VI) elimination. The results showed that U(VI) sorption process by either MB or Fe 3 O 4 /MB was pH-dependent and ionic strength-independent. The maximum sorption capacity of MB was higher than that of Fe 3 O 4 /MB. According to the analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, U(VI) sorption on both MB and Fe 3 O 4 /MB was mainly ascribed to the surface complexation between U(VI) and oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of MB. Fe 3 O 4 particles on the surface of MB didn’t provide extra active sites for the sorption of U(VI), but it enabled the adsorbent to be magnetically separated. Five consecutive sorption/desorption cycles verified the good reusability of Fe 3 O 4 /MB in this study. Therefore, the investigation is not only meaningful for the utilization of nuisance biomass from cyanobacterial blooms, but also provides novel adsorbents for the U(VI) removal from aqueous solutions.

The significant removal efficiency of microcystis aeruginosa was presented using Pt/Ti anode and activated carbon fiber/nickel foam (ACF/Ni) cathode by addition of Fe 2+ slightly in a wide range of initial pH (3–9). Results showed that about 93% of the Microcystis aeruginosa cells were removed within 15 min for Pt/Ti-ACF/Ni–Fe 2+ system. Dosage of Fe 2+ , current density, and initial pH had remarkable effects on the removal efficiency of microcystis aeruginosa. The mechanism of algae removal in the Pt/Ti-ACF/Ni–Fe 2+ electrochemical system was revealed by the comparison between Pt/Ti-ACF/Ni–Fe 2+ process and classical Fenton process, the analysis on Microcystis aeruginosa and ACF/Ni by SEM, the specific surface area and pore size analysis of ACF, and the determination of UV 254 , OD 620 and microcystin-LR (MC-LR). Results showed that the main mechanism of this system was the electro-Fenton process, which was accompanied by electro-adsorption, electro-floatation, and electro-coagulation process. And the cooperation mechanism on the electrochemical removal system was further speculated. With the breakdown of algal cells during the electrolysis, the MC-LR and other substances released from the cells were effectively degraded. Besides, the new cathode exhibited favorable and stable reusability . This study built up a high-efficiency algae removal system, which broke through the limits of narrow working pH range and large consumption of exogenous chemicals in electro-Fenton process.

Eutrophication of aquatic water bodies and the consequent harmful algal blooms (HABs) induced by excessive phosphorus (P) have become a critical global environmental challenge. In this study, a flower-like spherical metal-organic framework (MOF) material, La-BDC-NH 2 , was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method for the simultaneous phosphate adsorption and Microcystis aeruginosa flocculation. Its physicochemical properties were systematically characterized using a suite of analytical techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of phosphate adsorption performance tests demonstrated that the maximum adsorption capacity of this material for phosphate reached 75.65 mg/g at 25 °C. In the microalgal flocculation experiments, the harvesting efficiency of Microcystis aeruginosa exceeded 95% at the optimal dosage of 0.2 g/L. Notably, La-BDC-NH 2 retained excellent phosphate adsorption and microalgal flocculation performance over a broad pH range (4–10) and initial algal concentration range (OD 680 = 0.1–1.0), thus exhibiting robust adaptability to complex aquatic environments. Furthermore, this material could efficiently convert proteinaceous extracellular organic matter (EOM) released by Microcystis aeruginosa into more stable humic acid-like substances, thereby mitigating the environmental risks associated with EOM accumulation. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that La-BDC-NH 2 is a multifunctional, highly efficient, and stable environmental functional material for aquatic eutrophication control. It has good application prospects in controlling HABs and aquatic eutrophication, and provides a practical and feasible technical strategy for mitigating harmful algal blooms in eutrophic aquatic systems.

The risk of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the water recharged with reclaimed water is a bottleneck for water reuse . The suppression effects and mechanisms of the combination of UV-C and berberine on Microcystis aeruginosa and Scenedesmus obliquus in reclaimed water were investigated. Mono UV-C irradiation at 75 mJ cm −2 could suppress the growth of M. aeruginosa for 7 d and that at 90 mJ cm −2 could suppress the growth of S. obliquus for 5 d. UV-C irradiation combined with 0.2–2 mg L −1 berberine lengthened the inhibition period of M. aeruginosa to 10- > 22 d and that of S. obliquus to 7- > 22 d and induced more rapid lethal effects on the harmful microalgal cells, in significant synergetic patterns. The combination of UV-C and berberine suppressed total, intracellular and extracellular microcystin-LR (MC-LR) more effectively and decreased the MC-LR quota significantly, which further reduced the risks of microcystin production and release. Furthermore, synergetic mechanisms of the combined treatments were systematically investigated from the aspects of photosynthetic system (photosynthetic activity and pigments), metabolic activity (ATP and membrane potential), oxidation stress (reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione (GSH)), and apoptosis-like cell death (phosphatidylserine (PS) ectropion, caspase-3 activity and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) positive rate). The combination treatment provided a joint attack of UV-C and berberine on photosynthetic transport chain of photosynthetic system II (PS II), and a synergetic pathway to achieve more severe disruptions in energy metabolism as well as aggravated oxidative stress . The accumulated ROS enhanced increases in programmed cell death (PCD) indicators of both microalgal species, which contributed to the enhancement effects on growth suppression. The results showed that the combination treatment achieved lower dose requirements of both UV-C irradiation and berberine for inducing the same inhibition effects on microalgal cells, which was promising to be applied in the HABs control of reclaimed water.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in natural waters are of escalating global concern due to their detrimental impact on environmental health. Emerging evidence indicates that algae-bacteria symbionts can affect HAB features, though much about this interplay remains largely unexplored. The current study isolated a new species of Mucilaginibacter (type strain JXJ CY 39T) from culture biomass of the bloom-causing Microcystis aeruginosa FACHB-905 (Maf) from Lake Dianchi, China. Strain JXJ CY 39T was an aerobic, Gram-stain-negative rod bacterium that grew at 5–38°C, pH 4.0–11.0, and 0–3.0% NaCl. Taxonomic evaluation proposed a new species, with Mucilaginibacter lacusdianchii sp. nov., as the species epithet. Experimental results revealed that strain JXJ CY 39T spurred the growth of Maf by supplying soluble phosphorus and nitrogen during cultivation, despite the unavailability of soluble phosphorus and nitrogen. Additionally, by producing the plant hormone indole-3-acetate, strain JXJ CY 39T possibly impacted Maf’s functionality. Results from co-culture experiments with other strains from Maf biomass showed possible effects of strain JXJ CY 39T on the relationship between Maf and other cohabiting bacteria, as well as microcystin toxin production characteristics. Although Maf could foster the growth of strain JXJ CY 39T by supplying organic carbon, the strain’s growth could be regulated via specific chemical compounds based on antibiotic assays. Community composition analysis disclosed that this Mucilaginibacter strain positively affected Maf’s growth and modified densities and types of bacteria linked to Maf. Overall, these results suggest that the interactions between important HAB-causing organisms and their attached bacteria are complex, dynamic, and may influence the growth characteristics of algae.

High coagulants dosage, Al or Fe residual, unstable flocs, and extracellular organic materials (EOM) released from cells cannot be avoided by using traditional Al or Fe based coagulants in algae removal. Thus, a novel covalently bonded coagulant poly aluminum ferrous chloride/cationic polyacrylamide (CAFM) was developed. The algae and EOM removal performance and mechanisms were investigated in current research. Al and Fe residual, cell integrity, and compactness of flocs were analyzed after coagulation. Furthermore, the disinfection by-products formation potential (DBPFP) and economics was also figured out to confirm the advantage of using CAFM. Results showed that 95.01% of turbidity and 99.3% of OD 686 were effectively removed by using CAFM at 6 mg/L. Moreover, lower breakage probability of algae cells and denser flocs were realized by using CAFM compared to common used Al or Fe coagulants. In addition, lower Al and Fe residual and lower DBPFP were confimed in CAFM coagulation. DFT (Density functional theory) and ESP (Electrostatic Potential) results showed CAFM could combine bEOM (bonded extracellular organic matter) and dEOM (dissolved extracellular organic matter) through H-bond from Al atom in the covalent bond . Due to the introduction of various functional groups of different coagulants, charge neutralization and adsorption ability contributed to treating algae-containing water.

Algal intracellular organic matter (IOM), released during algae's normal growth phase and water treatment processes, has long been a source of significant membrane fouling , considerably limiting the effective use of ultrafiltration(UF) technology. In this study, a Bi-doped TiO 2 composite with powdered activated carbon (Bi 2 O 3 –TiO 2 /PAC) was loaded on ceramic UF membranes by vacuum filtration, and the prepared photocatalytic modified ceramic membranes (MCMs) were investigated for the removal of IOM and the mitigation of membrane fouling at different loading levels and under three operating conditions: Dark, Dark-UV, and UV. The results showed that the photocatalytic MCMs were able to remove the protein and humic acid fluorescent components of IOM and decompose or mineralize organic matter with molecular weights of 10–50 kDa. Under the Dark, Dark-UV, and UV conditions, the final normalized flux of MCM-2.88 was significantly increased by 22.6 %, 82.1 %, and 108.0 %, respectively. The hydrophilicity of MCMs not only transformed the interactions between IOM and the membrane into repulsive forces, but also the composite material on the membrane surface transforms the membrane fouling mechanism from intermediate blocking model to cake layer formation. Furthermore, the application of photocatalytic oxidation under the Dark-UV and UV conditions yielded a reduction in both reversible and irreversible fouling. This action led to an increased hydrophilicity and elevated free energy of adhesion with IOM during the filtration process. Moreover, the main fouling mechanism changed into complete or intermediate blocking. These outcomes collectively underscore the capability of MCMs to alleviate membrane fouling induced by IOM. This advancement holds substantial promise for the advancement and widespread implementation of photocatalytic ceramic membrane filtration techniques.

Recent advances in research on algae inhibition by using low-cost straw proposed a possible mechanism that reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by the solar irradiation of straw-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) might contribute to cyanobacteria inhibition. However, this process is not clearly understood. Here, DOM from three types of straw (barley, rice, and wheat) and natural organic matter (NOM) isolates were investigated in terms of their photochemical properties and ROS generating abilities. Results demonstrated that the DOM derived from the aeration decomposition of barley straw (A-DOMbs) yielded the best formation efficiencies of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) under solar-simulated irradiation in all organic matter samples. Correlation analysis implies that optical parameters and phenolic hydroxyl group contents can signify ROS generating abilities of different DOM solutions. Bioassay results show that A-DOMbs possesses the highest inhibition performance for M. aeruginosa in all DOM samples, much higher than those of NOM isolates. The addition of catalase greatly relieves the inhibition performance, making the loss of chlorophyll a content decreased from 37.14% to 7.83% in 2 h for A-DOMbs, which implies that for cyanobacteria growth inhibition, photochemically-produced H 2 O 2 from SOM is far more important than singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), •OH, and even SOM itself. Our results show that H 2 O 2 photochemically generated from straw-derived DOM is able to result in rapid inhibition of M. aeruginosa in a relatively short period, furthering the understanding of complicated mechanisms of cyanobacteria inhibition by using low-cost straw in eutrophic waters.

Novel oxygen vacancies-enriched AgI/Cu-BiVO 4 (ACBV) S-scheme heterojunction catalysts were constructed to boost photocatalytic organics degradation and M. aeruginosa inactivation with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) assistance. Specific interfacial charge transfer and abundant active centers were guided by introducing Cu doping and AgI coupling into BiVO 4 , with the catalytic activity and mechanism systematically investigated. The optimal 0.25-ACBV heterojunction exhibited 97.6% tetracycline (TC) degradation under PMS-assisted visible light and achieved effective inactivation of M. aeruginosa within 20 min (78.8%). The S-scheme heterostructure from Cu-BiVO 4 to AgI and synergistic effects endowed the system with high-energy carrier transfer kinetics and strong oxygen reduction capability. Meanwhile, the redox cycling of Cu 2+ /Cu + and surface oxygen defects served as electron acceptors to accelerate interfacial charge separation and as adsorption activation sites for PMS, promoting efficient mass transfer in the non-homogeneous system. This study inspires the design of high-performance S-scheme photocatalytic activators and expands their potential applications in environmental remediation.

The global expansion of Microcystis -dominated cyanobacterial blooms (MCBs) threatens aquatic ecosystems health, where Microcystis comprises coexisting microcystin (MC)-producing (MC + ) and MC-free (MC – ) strains. Luteolin, an allelopathic algicide, has shown potential in inhibiting MC + Microcystis growth and MC-production/-release. This study investigated luteolin's effects on co-cultured MC + and MC – Microcystis ( Microcystis population), comparing their sensitivity and elucidating mechanisms via MC-production/-release, proteomic, and metabolomic. Results showed that luteolin inhibited Microcystis population growth by 41.10% to 58.37%, with MC + strains exhibiting greater sensitivity, as indicated by stronger growth inhibition ratio (30.43% to 62.61%) and more severe cellular damage. Integrated proteomic and metabolomic analyses further revealed the underlying mechanisms of such sensitivity difference: MC + Microcystis exhibited severe impairments in photosynthetic activity, cell membrane composition, and antioxidant systems, alongside disruptions in protein biosynthesis, nucleotide degradation, and hindered DNA replication and repair. In contrast, MC – Microcystis experienced similar but milder disturbances, while promptly initiating compensatory responses. It enhanced carbohydrate metabolism and ATP synthase activity, promoted DNA replication and protein biosynthesis, and activated inflammatory responses to counteract luteolin stress. Additionally, although luteolin significantly decreased MC levels in the aqueous phase to 14.04 μg/L, it increased MC synthesis and retention within co-cultured MC + Microcystis cells, potentially exacerbating eco-risks due to prolonged MC release. This study clarifies the differential sensitivity of MC + and MC – Microcystis to allelopathic algicides and their molecular mechanisms, offering insights for developing targeted management plans based on each strain's survival strategies to control MCBs.

Microcystin (MC)-producing (MC+) and MC-free (MC−) Microcystis always co-exist and interact during Microcystis-dominated cyanobacterial blooms (MCBs), where MC+Microcystis abundance and extracellular MC-content (EMC) determine the hazard extent of MCBs. The current study elucidated intraspecific interaction between MC+ and MC−Microcystis at various nitrogen (N) levels (0.5–50 mg/L) and how such N-mediated interaction impacted algicidal and EMC-inhibiting effect of luteolin, a natural bioalgicide. Conclusively, MC+ and MC−Microcystis were inhibited mutually at N-limitation (0.5 mg/L), which enhanced the algicidal and EMC-inhibiting effects of luteolin. However, at N-sufficiency (5–50 mg/L), MC−Microcystis promoted MC+ ecotype growth and dominance, and such intraspecific interaction induced the cooperative defense of two ecotypes, weakening luteolin's algicidal and EMC-inhibiting effects. Mechanism analyses further revealed that MC+Microcystis in luteolin-stress co-culture secreted exopolymeric substances (EPSs) for self-protection against luteolin-stress and also released more EMC to induce EPS-production by MC−Microcystis as protectants, thus enhancing their luteolin-resistance and promoting their growth. This study provided novel ecological implications of MC−Microcystis toward MC+ ecotype in terms of assisting the dominant establishment of MC+Microcystis and cooperative defense with MC+ ecotype against luteolin, which guided the application of bioalgicide (i.e. luteolin) for MCBs and MCs pollution mitigation in different eutrophication-degree waters.
