Renewable hydrogen energy has been regarded as ideal green energy. There is an urgent need for efficient and stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Molybdenum carbide (Mo x C) has excellent intrinsic activity and stability, which is expected as one of the ideal candidates to replace Pt. Herein, we report a facile Tungsten (W) doping method to regulate the crystal structure of Mo x C to generate a Mo 2 C-MoC heterostructure. It reduces the charge transfer resistance and regulates adsorption and desorption of hydrogen, thereby promoting the HER in alkaline solution. Besides, the carbon matrix not only increases the conductivity, but also protects the active site of W-Mo x C/C from agglomeration and deactivation due to high temperature. Under alkaline media, the W-Mo x C/C has improved HER catalytic activity. In 1 M KOH, an overpotential of 178 mV is required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and the Tafel slope is 54.3 mV dec −1 . Moreover, it has a small charge transfer resistance and good stability. This work develops a multi-effect doping method that generates heterostructure and increases the active sites, which providing a new strategy for the performance regulation of other electrocatalysts.

The high cost and low stability of Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts have limited their commercial applications. In this paper, we report the microwave synthesis of ultralow loading Ru-Mo2C on carbon nanotubes (CNT) as ORR catalysts to alleviate these above disadvantages. Ru-Mo2C@CNT exhibited excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity with a half-potential of 0.87 V and an onset potential of 0.94 V. It has high stability and palmary anti-methanol capability in alkaline electrolytes. This Ru-Mo2C@CNT may be a promising alternative to Pt-based electrocatalysts in energy conversion and storage.

Two Cu/Mo 2 C catalysts with different interfacial structures are synthesized to reveal how synthesis routes control CO 2 hydrogenation selectivity. • 5Cu/Mo 2 C‑IWI achieves 85.7% methanol selectivity and STY of 53.7 mg MeOH ·g cat −1 ·h −1 , outperforming its doped counterpart that predominantly yields CO and CH 4 . • Moderate metal‑support interaction over catalyst stabilizes Cu δ+ /Mo 6+ for CO 2 conversion to methanol. • In situ DRIFTS verified catalysts follow dual formate-carboxylate pathway, and Cu/Mo 2 C interfacial structure regulates intermediates evolution to determine final product distribution. The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into methanol using renewable energy has dual energy and environmental significance. Molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) exhibits excellent CO 2 activation ability and thermal stability, but it is still difficult to achieve high methanol selectivity for catalysts supported on it, and the structure-activity relationship between interface structure and selectivity is still unclear. Here, Cu/Mo 2 C-IWI and Cu@Mo 2 C catalysts were fabricated via incipient wetness impregnation and in situ doping strategies, respectively, to investigate the effect of different Cu/Mo 2 C interfaces on product selectivity. Among them, Cu/Mo 2 C-IWI exhibited high methanol selectivity of 85.7% with a space-time yield of 53.7 mg MeOH ·g cat −1 ·h −1 (230 ℃, 3 MPa), whereas Cu@Mo 2 C predominantly produced CH 4 and CO. Combined X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy results revealed that moderate metal-support interactions in Cu/Mo 2 C-IWI stabilized the higher valence states of Cu δ+ and Mo 6+ species, which are critical for stabilizing formate (HCOO*) and carboxylate (*COOH) intermediates. In contrast, abundant Mo 2+ species and rich oxygen vacancies on Cu@Mo 2 C facilitated the cleavage of C–O bonds, thus promoting CO and CH 4 formation. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy ( in situ DRIFTS) verified that both catalysts follow a dual-path reaction mechanism involving formate and carboxylate intermediates, and interfacial structure dominates the evolution of reaction intermediates and final product distribution. This study establishes a clear correlation among synthesis strategy, interfacial structure and catalytic selectivity, and demonstrates that constructing surface Cu/Mo 2 C interfaces serves as a rational design principle for highly selective hydrogenation of CO 2 to methanol. Nitrite (NO2−), a widely used food additive, may pose health risks when consumed in excess, making the development of highly sensitive, rapid, and portable detection methods of great importance. Electrochemical methods have been widely applied to NO2−detection because of their simplicity, low cost, and fast response. In this work, based upon a portable potentiostat (xenSTAT), a NO2−electrochemical sensor has been successfully developed and combined with the modification of PtCu nanospheres on flower-like Mo2C (denoted as PtCu/Mo2C) on screen-printed electrodes (SPEs). Owing to the excellent electrochemical activity and catalytic capability of PtCu/Mo2C, the proposed electrochemical sensor exhibited a wide linear range (10–1000 µM), high sensitivity (0.0229 µA µM−1) and a low detection limit (0.98 µM). Moreover, the sensor was successfully applied for detecting nitrites in sausages and milk, showing also good recovery.

Molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) has been considered as one of the most promising electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its platinum-like electronic configuration, low cost, and good corrosion resistance. However, there are still great challenges in real activity and durability for large-scale applications. Herein, we report the ultrasmall Mo2C nanoparticles with a particle size less than 2 nm anchored on porous carbon exhibits excellent HER performance with the overpotentials (η10) of 156 mV and 130 mV in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, respectively. Furthermore, it also delivers a very stable life-span performance at a current density of around 20 mA cm–2 over 50 h with negligible decay. The nanopores in porous carbon are employed as nanoreactors to allow the reaction between its inside surface carbon atoms and Mo precursor to form the anchored Mo2C nanoparticles while avoiding the overgrowth of Mo2C particles at high temperatures in the annealing process. The high HER activity may be ascribed to the efficient exposure of active sites for ultrasmall particle size and the improved electron conductivity and ion transportation in the micro-3D configuration of the anchored structure in carbon pores.

The advancement of non-precious electrocatalysts with high efficiency is crucial for the industrial implementation of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In non-acidic environments, the dissociation of water and interactions between hydrogen and the catalyst are pivotal. This research presents a novel hybrid electrocatalyst, comprising a molybdenum oxycarbide and carbide heterojunction integrated onto carbon cloth (MoOC-Mo 2 C/C), which is fabricated through in situ interface engineering. The MoOC-Mo 2 C catalyst demonstrates exceptional electrical conductivity and remarkable HER performance across a wide pH range, particularly in alkaline conditions, as exemplified by Tafel slope of 38 mV dec − 1 , an ultralow overpotential of 45 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and notable long-term stability. Both experimental findings and theoretical analyses suggest that the incorporation of oxygen into the carbide structure enhances water adsorption and lowers the energy barrier for water dissociation. Furthermore, the distinct work functions of MoOC and Mo 2 C facilitate effective electron transfer from MoOC to Mo 2 C, optimizing the energy of hydrogen adsorption and significantly enhancing the activity and kinetics of alkaline HER. Our results underscore the promising potential of this highly efficient non-precious electrocatalyst, which exhibits a pronounced affinity for water molecules, in facilitating hydrogen evolution in alkaline media.

Carbon doped metallic compounds have attracted a great deal of interest due to their new synergistic properties and enhanced catalytic performance from the doped-element induced defects. In this paper, polyaniline (PANI) is used as the carbon source to dope molybdenum carbide , which is annealed at 1000 °C to be nitrogen-doped carbon coupled with Mo 2 C (NC@Mo 2 C). Through the XRD , SEM and TEM methods the prepared NC@Mo 2 C composite is thoroughly characterized. The NC@Mo 2 C composite illustrates two-dimensional nanoplate morphology, and shows low overpotential in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, 0.04 V) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER, 0.13 V) in 1 M KOH solution. Tafel slopes of NC@Mo 2 C for HER and OER are 100 mV decade −1 and 99 mV decade −1 , respectively, rather lower than pure Mo 2 C (HER: 130 mV decade −1 and OER: 126 mV decade −1 ). The Raman and XPS results show that it is the structural defects of Mo 2 C derived from NC doping that activate the reaction. Meanwhile, the NC doping and resulted defects enhance the conductivity of Mo 2 C, as well as endow NC@Mo 2 C nanoplates high electrochemical active surface area, facilitating the ion transfer, water absorption and gas desorption. The results of our work open up a new chance to design efficient non-noble metal-based catalysts for water electrolysis.

In this communication, for the first time, we demonstrate the shape-controllable synthesis of molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) nanowires (NWs) and nanosheets (NSs) via direct pyrolysis of their MoO x /p-phenylenediamine hybrid precursors under Ar. We further demonstrate the use of such carbides as a highly active hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalyst with good durability in acidic solution. It also suggests that the Mo 2 C NWs exhibit superior activity and durability over the Mo 2 C NSs.

Electrolysis of water is a promising method for production of the green-energy hydrogen, which is commonly assisted by high powerful catalyst. At present, developing low-cost and highly efficient electrocatalysts has attracted increasing attention. Herein, a novel composited catalyst of Zn x Ni 1-x S@Mo 2 C loaded on conductive carbon cloth (Zn x Ni 1-x S@Mo 2 C/CC) is successfully prepared by the hydrothermal method . Due to the abundant active sites of defect structures induced by the surface engineering, the prepared Zn x Ni 1-x S@Mo 2 C/CC shows outstanding electrocatalytic performances in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of water splitting, with low overpotential of 230 mV and 150 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. The Zn x Ni 1-x S@Mo 2 C/CC as an OER/HER bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting affords a stable voltage of 1.56 V @current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the catalyst shows an outstanding stability after a series of electrochemical tests. This work expands the multi-field applications of carbon cloth-supported materials as efficient non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts , with great importance in sustainable energy-relative technologies.

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial to clean fuel production. Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (TMCs) are promising HER electrocatalysts by their excellent intrinsic catalytic activity. However, the synthesis of 2D TMCs requires prolonged high-temperature conditions or rigorous etching processes. Here we achieved an ultra-fast and facile synthesis of ultra-thin carbon-terminated 2D TMCs via a microwave-pulse sugar-blowing method. A series of 2D TMCs are obtained rapidly within 3 min. This method accurately adjusts carbon-layer thickness and facilitates the formation of 2D structures. Accordingly, the electrocatalytic HER activity and stability of TMCs are significantly improved. The 2D W 2 C with 1 nm carbon-layer thickness shows high HER activity and ultra-long durability (100 h) in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Furthermore, this microwave-pulse method is a generic synthesis strategy that is demonstrated by the successful preparation of 2D WC, Mo 2 C and MoC.

Hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells (HEMFCs) have the advantages of using cost-effective materials, but hindered by the sluggish anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) kinetics. Here, we report an atomically dispersed Ir on Mo 2 C nanoparticles supported on carbon (Ir SA -Mo 2 C/C) as highly active and stable HOR catalysts. The specific exchange current density of Ir SA -Mo 2 C/C is 4.1 mA cm −2 ECSA , which is 10 times that of Ir/C. Negligible decay is observed after 30,000-cycle accelerated stability test. Theoretical calculations suggest the high HOR activity is attributed to the unique Mo 2 C substrate, which makes the Ir sites with optimized H binding and also provides enhanced OH binding sites. By using a low loading (0.05 mg Ir cm −2 ) of Ir SA -Mo 2 C/C as anode, the fabricated HEMFC can deliver a high peak power density of 1.64 W cm −2 . This work illustrates that atomically dispersed precious metal on carbides may be a promising strategy for high performance HEMFCs.

The design and synthesis of highly efficient and selective catalysts for CO2 thermal reduction remain a challenging issue of modern catalysis. Molybdenum carbide has attracted great interest in CO2-to-CO conversion (Reverse Water Gas Shift process, RWGS) because of its ability to dissociate CO2 and H2. However, single dominant Mo- or C-terminated facets of molybdenum carbide are unlikely to activate CO2 and H2 molecules simultaneously. Herein, we demonstrate how structural diversity of cogenerated molybdenum species (i.e., Mon nanoclusters and Mo2C nanoparticles) on the surface of an oxygen-enriched C-carrier boosts synergistically the chemoselective RWGS process with rates up to 581 μmolCO2·gMo–1·s–1 with CO selectivity > 99% already at 400 °C under an H2-rich environment. This catalytic outcome ranks among the highest reported so far for molybdenum carbide- or noble metal-based catalysts in the process, and it is up to 1.8 times higher than that measured on Mo2C-based nanoparticles. The enhanced reactivity of the structurally mixed catalyst has been ascribed to a synergistic modulation of the geometrical and electronic structure of different Mo sites that reduces the temperature at which CO production starts and facilitates the chemoselective CO desorption pathway. Experimental and in silico studies have also unveiled the existence of a linear correlation between the percentage of high-valence molybdenum species in the metal active-phase composition (Moδ+ %) and the increase in the RWGS rate.
