Ground−level ozone (O 3 ) pollution poses a significant threat to both ecosystem sustainability and human health. The catalytic decomposition of O 3 presents as a promising technology to address the issues of O 3 pollution. This study undertook the synthesis of various functionalized metal−organic framework (MOF) catalysts ( i.e., X-MIL-53(Fe) (X = H, NH 2 , NO 3 )) to delve into the influence of ligand functional groups on skeletal structure and catalytic efficacy, particularly focusing on unraveling the mechanism of O 3 catalytic decomposition under humid conditions. NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe) catalyst achieved complete O 3 decomposition under ambient temperature and high humidity conditions (RH=75 %), exhibiting a reaction rates (mol·m −2 ·s −1 ) 129 and 10.5 times greater than that of MIL-53(Fe) and NO 2 -MIL-53(Fe). The NH 2 group promotes electron flow within the backbone towards the hydroxyl group (OH) linked to Fe atom. In humid O 3 , H 2 O molecules augment the interaction between O 3 and NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe), and OH is converted to·O 2 − after deprotonation, promoting O 3 decomposition. Additionally, leveraging three−dimensional (3D) printing technology, a monolithic catalyst for O 3 decomposition was prepared for application. This study not only advances understanding of the mechanisms underlying O 3 decomposition but also offers practical solutions for addressing O 3 pollution at humid conditions.

Enhancing gas diffusion and interfacial accessibility in organic semiconductor films is essential for achieving high-performance nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) sensing at low concentration levels. This study presents a strategy for enhancing the nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) sensing performance of α-hexathiophene (α-6T) and Copper (II) Phthalocyanine (CuPc) organic semiconductor films by introducing a porous polystyrene (PS) structure onto SiO 2 substrates by solution spin-coating. The influence of PS concentration on the morphology and gas-sensing response characteristics was investigated. At an optimal PS concentration of 7 mg/mL, the sensitivity of the sensors was enhanced, and the theoretical limit of detection (LOD) was reduced. The PS/CuPc sensor achieved a sensitivity of 270.96%/ppm and a theoretical LOD as low as 299 ppb. We attribute this performance enhancement to the PS structure increasing the specific surface area of the organic semiconductor film, thereby promoting the diffusion and desorption of gas molecules within the semiconductor film. This work provides a reliable preparation method and mechanistic insights for developing gas sensors with low detection limits.

The efficient monitoring of toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) reveals a great practical significance in terms of environmental protection and human health. Tin disulfide (SnS 2 ) has recently presented bright application prospects for the NO 2 detection owing to its unique physiochemical properties. Unfortunately, the pristine SnS 2 -based gas sensor suffers from inferior selectivity to NO 2 since the emerging cross-response over interfering gases (especially to NH 3 ) at room temperature. Herein, a room-temperature-operated gas-sensitive device based on Au nanoparticles decorated SnS 2 nanosheet was proposed for the highly selective detection towards NO 2 by exploiting visible-light modulation. Benefited from the electronic sensitization and chemical sensitization of Au nanoparticles, the Au/SnS 2 gas sensor presented a visibly enhanced response toward 1 ppm NO 2 compared with pristine SnS 2 gas sensor, while its selectivity to NO 2 over NH 3 only increased by 35%. Further, through effectively modulating the adsorption and reaction behavior of gas molecules by introducing visible-light excitation, the Au/SnS 2 gas sensor manifested an excellent selectivity with 130% gain in detecting 1 ppm NO 2 at room temperature, endowed the robust repeatability and reliable long-term stability. This work thus demonstrates that the visible-light modulation can serve as a promising technique for exploiting highly selective gas-sensitive devices operating at room temperature.

With increasingly serious environmental problems caused by the improvement in people’s living standards, the number of cars has increased sharply in recent years, which directly leads to the continuous increase in the concentration of NO2in the air. NO2is a common toxic and irritant gas, which is harmful to both the human body and the environment. Therefore, this research focuses on NO2detection and is committed to developing high-performance, low detection limit NO2sensors. In this study, flower-like Au-loaded In2O3was successfully fabricated using the hydrothermal method and the wet impregnation method. The morphological features and chemical compositions of the as-prepared samples were characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD and XPS. A variety of sensors were fabricated and the gas-sensing properties of sensors were investigated. The results indicate that the sensor based on 0.5 mol% Au/In2O3shows a response value of 1624 to 1 ppm NO2at 100 °C, which is 14 times that based on pure In2O3. Meanwhile, the detection limit of the sensor based on 0.5 mol% Au/In2O3for NO2is 10 ppb, and the response value is 10.4. In addition, the sensor based on 0.5 mol% Au/In2O3also has high selectivity to NO2among CO, CO2, H2, CH4, NH3, SO2and H2S. Finally, the sensitization mechanism of Au/In2O3was discussed, and the reasons for improving the performance of the sensor were analyzed. The above results and analysis demonstrate that the gas-sensing attributes of the sensor based on 0.5 mol% Au/In2O3to NO2improved remarkably; at the same time, it has been proved that the composite material has extensive potential in practical applications.Keywords:NO2sensor;flower-like;Au-loaded In2O3;low detection limit;high selectivity

Structure nanocrystallization dramatically enhances the specific surface area and is one of the most popular methods for preparing high-performance gas sensing materials. However, most of the preparation methods are suffering high-cost and long time-consuming. This work synthesized Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS), a cost-effective and stable direct-bandgap semiconductor with cauliflower-like morphology by facile solution drop coating and low-temperature annealing. The morphology and gas sensing performance of CZTS films could be modulated by controlling the annealing time. The gas sensors showed a significant response toward ppb-level NO 2 (1.287 toward 50 ppb) with a short response, recovery time, and high selectivity at room temperature (25 °C). It is worth mentioning that the limit of detection is 50 ppb, which is the first report on the ppb-level detection ability of CZTS-based NO 2 gas sensors. The enhanced sensitivity of the cauliflower-like CZTS nanocrystal-based gas sensor can be ascribed to the small grain size, large specific surface area for effective gas diffusion, and excellent conductivity of the spherical packed structure.

Here, the facile strategy of preparing filamentous copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) based gas sensors using a solution method was studied. Electrical and gas sensitive properties of filamentous CuPc films transistors were studied in detail. The filamentous CuPc films had a three-dimensional and porous structure, the gas analytes could interact more effectively with the gas sensitive layers, and the efficiency of charge carrier conversion into conductive channel increased, thus improving the sensing performance of the sensors. The relative responsivities of 75 mg mL−1 filamentous CuPc films sensors to 20 ppm NO2 gas were 32797%. The response rate was 80%. The sensitivity was 1492%/ppm. The LOD was 0.3 ppm. The successful preparation of filamentous CuPc films and their application in sensors lay a foundation for the future application of phthalocyanine materials in the field of flexible sensing.

One promising method for mitigating low-temperature and low-concentration NO 2 pollution is selective adsorption using porous solid materials. However, the corrosive nature of NO 2 renders the development of an adsorbent with high and cyclable NO 2 uptake a formidable challenge. Herein, we attempted to address this challenge by developing a microporous covalent triazine framework (CTF) as effective adsorbents for NO 2 capture, achieving unprecedented high cyclable capacity enabled by simultaneous high adsorbent stability and moderate adsorption affinity via tuning specific binding sites. Using dynamic column breakthrough experiments, we demonstrated that the pristine CTF exhibited a high NO 2 adsorption capacity (dry: 3.83 mmol/g; wet: 5.26 mmol/g) overtaking most reported solid adsorbents, thanks to abundant active sites (e.g., nitrogen/carbon/triazine rings). Post-synthesis converted the surface nitrogen to protonated nitrogen site and further to transition metal site affording more effective binding sites that allows for moderately strong adsorption, resulting in elevated NO 2 adsorption capacity (dry: 6.11 mmol/g; wet: 8.97 mmol/g) and a highest reversible NO 2 adsorption (retaining 91 % and 64 % at dry and wet conditions after five cycles, respectively), as illustrated by our mechanistic study using in situ DRIFTS and DFT calculations. This work affords not only promising adsorbents for real-world applications in mitigating NO 2 pollution, but also a strategy of developing robust adsorbents with desired affinity generally applicable to adsorptive capture of corrosive and toxic gases.

In this paper, the Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuO nanocomposites were successfully prepared by an environment-friendly and simple hydrothermal method . The synthetics are evaluated using a series of characterization techniques, such as XRD , SEM, TEM , XPS , FTIR, UV–vis, and BET techniques. The results show that Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuO nanocomposites are mesoporous and have a higher specific surface area than Ti 3 C 2 T x , confirming the presence of more gas adsorption/diffusion regions. Furthermore, the Ti 3 C 2 T x with the introduction of CuO has rich oxygen vacancies and adsorbed oxygen. In particular, the response of Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuO sensor (56.99%) is 5 times higher than that of Ti 3 C 2 T x (11.17%) sensor to 50 ppm NO 2 at room temperature (RT). Especially, the Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuO sensor exhibits ultra-fast response/recovery time (16.6/31.3 s to 20 ppm NO 2 ), great reversibility , outstanding selectivity to NO 2 , and desirable long-term stability (over 40 days). The enhanced gas sensing performance may be attributed to the formation of hybrid heterojunctions between CuO and Ti 3 C 2 T x that provide carrier migration channels to hasten the redox reaction . At the same time, Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuO possesses more oxygen vacancies and adsorbed oxygen than Ti 3 C 2 T x , which will reduce the required energy for gas adsorption to further enhance the gas sensing performance. Hopefully, the above improved gas sensing performance indicators modified with CuO are expected to become the advantage of constructing Ti 3 C 2 T x -based sensor, which will be put into commercial NO 2 detection in the future.

Sensors based on organic field effect transistors have attracted extensive interests, but most sensors are applied to a single analyte detection. Herein, a facile strategy was proposed to optimize the growth of active layers by regulating the thickness of vanadyl-phthalocyanine (VOPc) films and carrying out the thermal annealing. Thanks to the improved film morphology and crystal properties , the carrier mobility of transistors reached 0.15 cm 2 V −1 s −1 , humidity and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) induced multi-parameter response of transistors could be considered as an efficient sensing approach. The sensitivity of threshold voltage reached 0.59 V/% RH ranging from 42%−82% RH. In addition, the gas sensing performance was systematically studied. Sensors based on 10 nm VOPc films achieved a 4710% response to 10 ppm NO 2 gas, with a theoretical limit of detection down to 125.2 ppb, and the response current was improved by two orders of magnitude under the amplification effect of transistor. The obtained gas sensors also exhibited high repeatability after being stored at 90% ambient humidity. It was concluded that different charge carrier transfer mechanism in moisture and NO 2 gas provided a simple idea for tunable applications of phthalocyanine-based transistors.

NO 2 is one of the recognized six major pollutants worldwide. Its monitoring and forewarning are indispensable for human health. Thus, a practical sensor with rapid response and high sensitivity would endow us with an effective acknowledgment of NO 2 distribution. In this work, the gold-loaded tellurium (Au@Te) nanobelts are synthesized through a one-pot hydrothermal process. According to various characterization, including X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscope , transmission electron microscopy , the formation of tellurium nanobelts with a typical thickness of 18 nm and flower-like gold nanoparticles with a diameter of 50–200 nm is confirmed. Based on these, the Au@Te sensor exhibits appealing sensing properties in a comprehensive measurement considering the practical application scenarios, including a sensitivity of 0.028 ppb -1 (0–50 ppb), a limit of detection with ppt-level (~83 ppt), rapid response (11.3 s towards 5 ppm), good repeatability and selectivity. Meanwhile, the long-term stability is measured under continuous charging in accordance with actual application scenarios. A stable response along 28 days is observed. This work provides an efficient strategy for the fabrication of NO 2 sensors, together with a case for gas sensor evaluation towards specified application scenarios.

The mixed conductor porous layer was prepared by introducing the electronic conductor NiO into the oxygen ion conductor YSZ for the impedimetric NO 2 sensor. By changing the ratio of YSZ/NiO in the porous layer , the morphology and electron-ion conduction properties of the mixed conductor porous layer were tuned to obtain the high-performance sensing electrode/electrolyte/gas three-phase boundary (TPB) and improve the response characteristics of the sensor. The results show that the number of pores in the porous layer decreases with increasing NiO doping, while the average pore size shows an opposite trend. The results of AC impedance and NO 2 -TPD measurement show that the introduction of NiO in the YSZ porous layer significantly improves the electrochemical activity of the sensor at TPB and the NO 2 adsorption capacity , which in turn improves the sensitivity of the sensor. The sensor based on the YSZ:NiO= 1:0.5 (mass ratio) porous layer exhibits the highest Θ (Δ Θ = 19.13° for 300 ppm) and |Z| (S |Z| = 0.35 for 300 ppm) response value. The sensor also has good anti-interference ability. The changes of Δ Θ caused by CH 4 , CO 2 , H 2 , NO and NH 3 are 0.6%, 1.6%, − 2.6%, 3.3% and − 2.4%, and the Δ|Z| are 2.5%, 3.2%, − 2.7%, 5.6% and 1.2%. Meanwhile, the humidity has almost no effect on the |Z| and Θ response.

Achieving ppb-level nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) detection is of great significance in environmental monitoring and human daily life. The construction of portable and high-performance NO 2 sensor working at room temperature is the focus of attention. In this work, three-dimensional Mo 2 CT x nano-crumpled spheres (MS) sensitive material was designed and prepared via ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method, and a room-temperature planar type MS-based NO 2 sensor was successfully developed using drop-casting onto PI substrate with Au interdigital electrode. The sensor utilizing MS sensitive material exhibits the highest response value (−23.53%) to 5 ppm NO 2 and a lowest detection limit of 30 ppb at room temperature, also the excellent selectivity. Characterization and density functional theory calculation prove that the excellent NO 2 sensing properties are attributed to the increased specific surface area and more exposed edge-rich active sites which are caused by small size three-dimensional nano-crumpled spheres structure. This study provides a new strategy for improving the sensing performance of MXenes-based gas sensor and a new method for the construction of room temperature ppb-level NO 2 sensor.
