The stoichiometric photocatalytic reaction of CO 2 with H 2 O is one of the great challenges in photocatalysis. Here, we construct a Cu 2 O-Pt/SiC/IrO x composite by a controlled photodeposition and then an artificial photosynthetic system with Nafion membrane as diaphragm separating reduction and oxidation half-reactions. The artificial system exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance for CO 2 reduction to HCOOH and H 2 O oxidation to O 2 under visible light irradiation. The yields of HCOOH and O 2 meet almost stoichiometric ratio and are as high as 896.7 and 440.7 μmol g −1 h −1 , respectively. The high efficiencies of CO 2 reduction and H 2 O oxidation in the artificial system are attributed to both the direct Z-scheme electronic structure of Cu 2 O-Pt/SiC/IrO x and the indirect Z-scheme spatially separated reduction and oxidation units, which greatly prolong lifetime of photogenerated electrons and holes and prevent the backward reaction of products. This work provides an effective and feasible strategy to increase the efficiency of artificial photosynthesis.

A novel theophylline (TP) sensor was developed using a single walled carbon nanotube–large mesoporous carbon/Nafion composite modified glassy carbon electrode (SWCNT–LMC/Nafion/GCE). The morphology of the SWCNT–LMC microstructure was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the surface of the modified electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The results showed enhanced electrochemical reactivity and voltammetric response of TP. Under the selected conditions the peak current was linear with TP concentration from 0.3 to 38.0 μM with a detection limit of 0.08 μM (S/N = 3), as determined by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The SWCNT–LMC/Nafion/GCE was successfully applied for the determination of TP in human blood serum and urine samples with good recoveries.

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) represent a promising platform for ion sensing applications due to their unique volumetric doping mechanism and biocompatibility. However, achieving enhanced cation detection while maintaining scalable and cost-effective fabrication remains a significant challenge, limiting their practical deployment. Here, an all-solution approach that integrates ion-responsive polymer coatings on silver gate electrodes to address both sensitivity and manufacturability concerns is presented. Our fabrication strategy employs screen-printing techniques exclusively on flexible polyethylene terephthalate substrates, utilizing cross-linked poly(3-hexylthiophene) channels and strategically modified gate electrodes with Nafion or chitosan coatings. Nafion-coated devices demonstrate superior performance with twice transconductance enhancement from 3.2 to 6.6 mS and dramatically reduce charge-transfer resistance from 30 to 2.3 kΩ, enabling enhanced cation response across 10 –5 to 1 M concentrations while maintaining excellent resistance to neutral organic interferents. Chitosan-modified electrodes achieve the fastest temporal response with 3 times faster recovery times. The devices exhibit robust reproducibility and stability, with negligible interference from common neutral organic solvents including ethanol, acetone, and hexane. This scalable platform opens possibilities for industrial-scale production of disposable biosensors, particularly for point-of-care medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring applications requiring cost-effective, high-performance ion detection.

Vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) are considered a promising technology for grid-scale energy storage owing to their intrinsic safety, flexible design, and long cycle life. However, their practical deployment remains constrained by the selectivity–conductivity dilemma of benchmark membranes such as Nafion, leading to capacity decay and efficiency loss. Herein, we propose and experimentally fabricate a hybrid membrane integrating a sulfonated polymer of intrinsic microporosity (sPIM-1) into Nafion. Through systematic optimization of sPIM-1 loading, the optimal 7% sPIM-1/Nafion membrane achieves an exceptional ion selectivity (1.95 × 10 5 S min cm −3 , 2.87 times larger than conventional Nafion), while retaining high proton conductivity (210.96 mS cm −1 ). As a result, VFBs assembled with the composite membrane exhibit a markedly prolonged self-discharge time (70.7% extension) and outstanding cycling durability, retaining an energy efficiency of 86.6% after 1000 cycles, substantially outperforming Nafion-based systems. The improvement is rationalized by the synergistic coupling of chemical (-SO₃H mediated) and physical (rigid-porous-network) proton transport pathways, concurrent with a size-sieving effect that selectively blocks vanadium ions. This work not only demonstrates the efficacy of sPIM-1/Nafion composite membrane strategy for high-performance VFB, but also establishes an advanced membrane design avenue in energy storage devices.

Myofibrillar protein (MP) suspension was nitrated by exposing to nitrite. • 3-Nitrotyrosine (3-NT) is a biomarker of MP nitration. • A Sensor was made by CeVO 4 -CNT-Nafion nanocomposite modifying on GCE. • 3-NT in nitrosative MP was detected by the sensor coupled with CV. • The proposed method was compared with HPLC method. 3-Nitrotyrosine (3-NT) is a recognized biomarker of protein nitration. In this study, an electrochemical nonenzymatic sensor was developed for 3-NT detection by modifying a glassy carbon electrode with a nanocomposite of CeVO 4 , carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNT), and Nafion. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that flower-like CeVO 4 nanoparticles were uniformly embedded within the interconnected tubular network of CNT and Nafion. Under optimal conditions, the sensor exhibited a wide linear response to 3-NT in the range of 10 to 900 μM, with a detection limit of 1.20 μM. To validate its practical application, myofibrillar protein (MP) was extracted from pork and exposed to varying concentrations of nitrite at pH 6.0, leading to the formation of 3-NT. These nitrosative MP samples were then analyzed using the developed sensor, and the results were compared with those obtained by HPLC using split samples. The findings demonstrated no significant differences between the two methods. Download: Download high-res image (105KB) Download: Download full-size image

A novel self-assembled composite membrane , Nafion-[PDDA/ZrP] n with nacre-like nanostructures was successfully fabricated by a layer-by-layer (LbL) method and used as proton exchange membrane for vanadium redox flow battery applications. Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) with positive charges and zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanosheets with negative charges can form ultra-thin nacre-like nanostructure on the surface of Nafion membrane via the ionic crosslinking of tightly folded macromolecules. The lamellar structure of ZrP nanosheets and Donnan exclusion effect of PDDA can greatly decrease the vanadium ion permeability and improve the selectivity of proton conductivity . The fabricated Nafion-[PDDA/ZrP] 4 membrane shows two orders of magnitude lower vanadium ion permeability (1.05 × 10 −6 cm 2 min −1 ) and 12 times higher ion selectivity than those of pristine Nafion membrane at room temperature. Consequently, the performance of vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) assembled with Nafion-[PDDA/ZrP] 3 membrane achieved a highly coulombic efficiency (CE) and energy efficiency (EE) together with a very slow self-discharge rate. When comparing with pristine Nafion VRFB, the CE and EE values of Nafion-[PDDA/ZrP] 3 VRFB are 10% and 7% higher at 30 mA cm −2 , respectively.

Low-cost PCB‑gold electrode with superior electron kinetics. • MWCNTs/Nafion network boosts sensitivity and selectivity. • High performance: 1–70 μM linear range and 202 nM LOD. • Strong anti-biofouling and selectivity in complex media. • Direct dopamine detection in 3D dECM neuronal models. Dopamine (DA) is a crucial neurotransmitter whose abnormal fluctuations are linked to neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Detecting DA in complex biological matrices faces challenges from coexisting interferents and electrode biofouling. Here, we developed a carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) and Nafion-modified printed circuit board gold electrode (PCB-AuE) for selective DA detection. The PCB-AuE platform offers superior electron transfer kinetics, ultra-low cost, and design flexibility compared to commercial electrodes. The synergistic MWCNTs-COOH/Nafion modification provides a highly conductive 3D network with abundant active sites while electrostatically repelling anionic interferents (ascorbic acid and uric acid). The sensor achieved a broad linear range (1–70 μM), high sensitivity (1.98 μA/μM), and low detection limit (202 nM) with excellent reproducibility (RSD = 4.8%). Despite an 8.5% signal attenuation in culture media versus PBS, the sensor maintained reliable detection capability. The platform successfully detected endogenous DA secreted by skin-derived precursors (SKPs)-derived dopaminergic neurons cultured in 3D brain decellularized extracellular matrix scaffolds. This disposable, cost-effective sensor provides a practical analytical tool for neurotransmitter monitoring in complex 3D tissue models with significant potential for disease diagnosis and drug screening applications. Schematic representation of the fabrication and application of a nanocomposite-modified PCB gold electrode array for dopamine detection in 3D neuronal models. Sensor Fabrication and Surface Modification. A Printed Circuit Board (PCB) gold electrode array is utilized as the transducer platform. The three-electrode system consists of a central Working Electrode (WE), a surrounding Counter Electrode (CE), and a Pseudo-Reference Electrode (Pseudo-RE). The WE surface is modified via drop-casting with a nanocomposite ink comprising carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) and Nafion. The MWCNTs-COOH provide a high-surface-area conductive network, while Nafion acts as a cation-exchange polymer. Construction of the 3D Dopaminergic Neuronal Model. Skin-derived precursor cells (SKPs) are cultured as spheres and subjected to a 14-day neural induction protocol to generate mature dopaminergic neurons (SKPs-DA), confirmed by tyrosine hydroxylase (TH + ) expression. These neurons are subsequently encapsulated within a decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) scaffold to create a biomimetic 3D SKPs-DA neuronal tissue. Cell viability within the scaffold is validated via Live/Dead staining (Calcein-AM/Ethidium homodimer-1). Electrochemical Dopamine (DA) Detection and Sensing Mechanism. The modified electrode exhibits high sensitivity (1.98 μA/μM) and a low limit of detection (202 nM) within a linear range of 1–70 μM. The sensing mechanism leverages the synergistic effects of the nanocomposite: (1) The negatively charged sulfonate groups in Nafion electrostatically attract cationic dopamine (DA + ). (2) Anionic species such as ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) are repelled by the Nafion layer, enhancing selectivity. (3) Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) shows a distinct oxidation peak at approximately 0.1 V for the SKPs-DA supernatant compared to undifferentiated controls, demonstrating the sensor's efficacy in monitoring neurotransmitter release in complex biological matrices. The fuel cell type gas sensor has attracted wide attention due to its advantages of operating at room temperature, low power consumption and good stability. In this study, a new sensitive electrode material Au-Ni/CF was developed for the detection of NO 2 . Through XRD , SEM and TEM characterization, it has been demonstrated that the electrode material exhibits improved crystallinity after being sintered at high temperatures. This leads to a reduction in charge transfer impedance. Additionally, XPS testing and TEM characterization have confirmed that high temperature sintering results in the reduction of more metal elements, leading to an increase in the electrochemical surface area and effectively improving sensor sensitivity. Furthermore, adjusting the mass ratio of gold to nickel can alter the surface lattice arrangement and electronic structure of the electrode material, subsequently impacting its resistance and catalytic ability towards NO 2 , ultimately enhancing sensor sensitivity. The sensitivity of the sensor using Au 5 Ni 2 /CF as the electrode material for detecting 0.05–10 ppm NO 2 was found to be 47.88 nA/ppm with response and recovery times of 35 s and 25 s respectively when exposed to 2 ppm NO 2 . Furthermore, it exhibited good selectivity and stability, indicating promising potential for application in room temperature atmospheric environment monitoring.

A novel poly(malachite green)/graphene nanosheets–nafion (PMG/GNs–NF) composite film-modified glassy carbon electrode was developed to indirectly detect methyl parathion (MP). p -nitrophenol, the alkaline hydrolysis product of MP, was successfully determined at a relatively lower potential using this modified electrode due to the excellent electrocatalytic activity of PMG/GNs–NF composite film. The presence of GNs in the composite film enhanced the stability of PMG and increased the electron transfer rate. The kinetic parameters of modified electrodes were studied. What is more, the optimum experimental parameters affecting response were selected in terms of pH, accumulation potential, accumulation time, scanning cycles during polymerization of malachite green, and alkaline hydrolysis conditions. Under optimum conditions, the chronoamperometric response current was proportional to MP concentration over the range from 0.02 to 1.5 μM with a low-detection limit of 2.0 nM. Finally, the sensor was applied for the determination of MP in real samples, and the results were satisfactory with recoveries from 97.20 to 104.53 %. Due to its simple preparation, good reproducibility, and stability, this developed modified electrode provides a new platform for the detection of organophosphate pesticides.

An ultra-high ion-selective Nafion composite membrane modified by phosphotungstic acid (PWA) coupled silica for vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) was constructed and prepared through solution casting . The composite membrane exhibits excellent proton conductivity and vanadium ions blocking property by incorporating the nanohybrid composed of silica and PWA into the Nafion ionomer . Simple tuning for the filling amount of the nanohybrid endows the obtained membranes preeminent vanadium barrier property including a minimum vanadium permeability of 3.13 × 10 −7 cm 2 min −1 and a maximum proton conductivity of 0.081 S cm −1 at 25 °C. These indicate an ion selectivity of 2.59 × 10 5 S min cm −3 , which is 6.8 times higher than that of recast Nafion (0.33 × 10 5 S min cm −3 ). As a result, the VRB with the composite membrane shows superior battery performance containing a lower self-discharge rate, higher capacity retention and more robust cyclic stability compared with recast Nafion over a range of current densities from 40 to 100 mA cm −2 .

An electrochemical biosensor capable of direct detection of DNA damage induced by clenbuterol (CLB) has been developed. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified using reduced graphene oxide-Nafion and dsDNA to produce a dsDNA/RGO-Nafion/GCE sensor. The modified electrode was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV), and the results at each stage of the electrode construction were interpreted. They indicated that the electrochemical oxidation peak currents of guanine and adenine at the electrode (dsDNA/RGO-Nafion/GCE) significantly increased as compared with those at the untreated electrode (dsDNA/GCE). Based on this, the sensor was used to measure the change of the oxidation peak currents for guanine and adenine between the intact and damaged dsDNA in the sensor films, and the DNA damage was successfully detected. Furthermore, the plot of peak current decline for the guanine and adenine versus the concentration of CLB was linear in the range of 5.0 × 10−7 to 4.0 × 10−6 mol L−1, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.2 × 10−7 mol L−1, which provided a good method to determine CLB indirectly.
