Nickel-based sulfides have been proven to be excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts due to their excellent electrical conductivity, but their poor stability hinders their application in practical applications. To address this issue, defect engineering has been proposed as a viable strategy to enhance the electronic structure of the catalyst and further boost the OER performance. Herein, a MOF-derived Sn-doped NiS/Ni3S2 nanostructure grown in situ on nickel foam (Sn–NixSy/NF) has been designed as an active OER electrocatalyst. The morphology of the material was significantly impacted by the addition of the Sn elements, nanorods modified with nanoparticles providing more active sites. Moreover, the introduction of Sn elements induced the generation of sulfur vacancies (Vs), enhanced electron transfer, promoted electron redistribution, and increased the charge transfer rate. All of these endow the Sn–NixSy/NF-T with exceptionally low overpotentials of 104 and 286 mV to achieve a current density of 10 and 100 mA cm–2 for OER. Moreover, the Sn–NixSy/NF-T showed long-term stability, maintaining 100 h at current densities of 100 mA cm–2. In short, this work opened a route for engineering defects to boost the OER.

It is of great importance to design and develop electrocatalysts that are both long-lasting and efficient for seawater oxidation. Herein, a three-dimensional porous cauliflower-like Ni 3 S 2 foam on Ni foam (Ni 3 S 2 foam/NF) is proposed as a high-performance electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline seawater. The as-synthesis Ni 3 S 2 foam/NF achieves exceptional efficacy, achieving a current density of 100 mA·cm −2 at mere overpotential of 369 mV. Notably, its electrocatalytic stability extends up to 1000 h at 500 mA·cm −2 .

Heazlewoodite nickel sulfide (Ni 3 S 2 ) has become attractive for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, strong sulfur–hydrogen bonds (S–H ads ) formed on the surface of Ni 3 S 2 greatly hinder the H ads desorption and reduce HER activity. Herein, amorphous NiWO 4 nanoparticles-decorated Ni 3 S 2 electrocatalysts (NiWO 4 /Ni 3 S 2 ) have been constructed via a two-step hydrothermal method. The heterostructures exhibit much better HER performance than original Ni 3 S 2 by delivering current densities of −10 and −100 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 136 and 274 mV, while those for Ni 3 S 2 are 234 and 424 mV, respectively. Moreover, they display ultra-long stability of 75 h. Theoretical calculation proves the improved activity of NiWO 4 /Ni 3 S 2 heterostructures is attributed to highly active interfaces between amorphous NiWO 4 nanoparticles and Ni 3 S 2 electrocatalysts. The strong electronic interaction between NiWO 4 and Ni 3 S 2 decreases the local electron density of Ni and S atoms, facilitates water adsorption on Ni-sites and optimizes hydrogen atom adsorption/desorption on adjacent S-sites with weakened S–H ads .

The electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) is an efficient way to reduce the overpotential of the anodic reaction of electrocatalytic water splitting with abundant high-value byproducts. However, it has always been difficult to reveal a clear reaction path and real active site during the electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) process. In this work, NiOOH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF, a model catalyst was synthesized by the two-step method, and the reaction path of the electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol on NiOOH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF was clearly unveiled by the in situ infrared and Raman analysis. In addition, the TEM after GOR and in-situ Raman intuitively demonstrated that the NiOOH was the real active site during the GOR process. Consequently, the synthesized NiOOH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF catalyst achieved a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at 1.227 V vs . RHE and obtained a high formic acid Faraday efficiency of 97.7 % at a low potential of 1.4 V vs . RHE. This work demonstrates an effective method for unveiling the GOR mechanism and the other relevant electrocatalytic reaction processes.

Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have been reported as efficient pre-catalysts for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, inadequate cognition about the electrochemical activation-induced structure evolution and effect of the residual anions leads to insufficient theoretical guidance for the rational design of highly effective catalyst. Herein, Ni 3 S 2 nanoflakes vertically grown on Ni foam (Ni 3 S 2 /NF) are successfully achieved to behave as the pre-catalyst. Systematic experimental investigation and theoretical calculation endorse that stepwise S leaching combined with OH − adsorption is conducive to boosting the structure evolution of Ni 3 S 2 /NF into NiOOH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF. In addition, the residual SO 4 2− anchored on the surface of reconstructed catalyst could enhance the adsorption of reactive intermediates and decrease the stepwise energy barrier for OER. As a result, the reconstructed NiOOH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF exhibits superior OER performance with an overpotential of 255.4 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm 2 . In addition, remarkable electrocatalytic performance for overall water splitting is achieved with NiOOH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF and Ni 3 S 2 /NF as anode and cathode, respectively, featured for 1.57 V (vs. RHE) to powering overall water electrolysis with a current density of 10 mA cm 2 . This work supplies valuable insights for fundamental understanding and rational construction of efficient nickel-based OER catalyst.

Preparing cheap, stable and effective electrocatalytic for oxygen evolution catalysts is urgent. A two-step hydrothermal method was applied to synthesis the heterostructural catalyst of Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF in this study. The experiment demonstrates that Ni 3 S 2 could grow on the edges of NiFe-LDH. At 100 mA·cm − 2 , the Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF shows 264 mV overpotential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) which is lower than that of NiFe-LDH/NF and Ni 3 S 2 /NF. The electrochemical analysis shows that the heterostructure in Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF could increase the effective charge transfer, active sites and adjusts the adsorption-desorption energy of OER performance. Also, the Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF showed long-term stability, which is a candidate for water electrolysis applications in practice. Graphical

Development of robust and corrosion-resistant anodes is crucial for large-scale alkaline industrial coal gasification wastewater (CGW) electrolysis in an anion-exchange membrane water electrolyser (AEMWE). Herein, we develop a corrosion strategy to construct a self-supported electrocatalyst (CoNiFe@Mo–Ni 3 S 2 ) with high mechanical stability by anchoring the CoNiFe medium-entropy alloy catalytic layer onto a dense interlayer of Mo–Ni 3 S 2 support. The CoNiFe@Mo–Ni 3 S 2 catalyst exhibits a strengthened heterophase between the crystalline Mo–Ni 3 S 2 interlayer and amorphous CoNiFe catalytic layer, significantly facilitating electron diffusion and reaction kinetics. In 1 M KOH +50% CGW, the CoNiFe@Mo–Ni 3 S 2 electrode delivers low apparent anodic overpotentials of 124 and 202 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, where OER is coupled with the electrooxidation of ammonia nitrogen and organic pollutants. The CoNiFe@Mo–Ni 3 S 2 -based AEMWE single cell further achieves a current density of 0.5 A cm −2 at 1.74 V. Remarkably, the system simultaneously achieves 92.6% ammonia-nitrogen removal and 51.4% chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction. Post-reaction Raman, XRD, and XPS analyses reveal that interfacial electronic coupling between crystalline Mo–Ni 3 S 2 and amorphous CoNiFe promotes surface reconstruction into high-valence (Ni, Co, Fe)–OOH species, while the residual sulfide interlayer provides conductive and mechanically robust support. These results demonstrate the potential of CoNiFe@Mo–Ni 3 S 2 for coupling hydrogen production with CGW treatment and resource utilization.

Electrocatalytic water splitting is a core technology for green hydrogen production, with the slow kinetics of the OER and insufficient bifunctional catalytic activity being the primary bottlenecks. FeOOH exhibits excellent OER activity, but its application is limited by low electrical conductivity and high energy barriers for intermediate formation. In this study, a two-step hydrothermal method combined with an interfacial electronic regulation strategy was employed to construct, for the first time, a ternary heterostructured bifunctional electrocatalyst FeOOH-ReS 2 -Ni 3 S 2 /NF, achieving precise coupling of multiple active phases and efficient regulation of interfacial electrons. Structural characterization confirms that the catalyst exhibits a composite morphology combining nanospheres and three-dimensionally interwoven nanosheets, with uniform distribution of Fe, Ni, Re, and S elements, forming tight heterojunctions between components. The introduction of FeOOH induces strong electronic interactions with ReS 2 -Ni 3 S 2 , triggering lattice strain and bond tension regulation, which optimizes the catalyst’s electronic structure and lays the foundation for rapid interfacial charge transfer. Electrochemical testing indicates that in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, the catalyst exhibits a HER overpotential as low as 72 mV (Tafel slope 90 mV dec -1 ) at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 , while the OER overpotential is only 238 mV (Tafel slope 35.8 mV dec -1 ); the full-water-splitting cell achieved a current density of 10 mA cm -2 at just 1.53 V and operated stably for 100 hours. This study provides a new approach to interface regulation for the design of highly efficient non-precious-metal bifunctional full-water-splitting catalysts. Electrocatalytic oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) offers a sustainable route to synthesize the value-added platform chemical 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). However, the synergistic mechanism of HMF oxidation involving Ni 3 + OOH and the anionic groups generated by the reconstructed nickel-based catalysts remains unclear. Herein, a self-supporting Ni 3 S 2 catalyst is synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal method for efficient HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR). The synthesized NF/Ni 3 S 2 achieves the current density of 112.50 mA cm −2 at 1.45 V, with 99.59% HMF conversion and 99.18% FDCA yield. In situ Raman spectroscopy and XPS analysis reveal that partial sulfur-containing species are detached from the lattice during the electrochemical reconstruction from S 2− to SO 4 2− . This process generates abundant sulfur vacancies and exposes more nickel active sites, thereby promoting the formation of Ni 3+ OOH species. DFT calculations demonstrate that SO 4 2− incorporation induces charge redistribution in the NiOOH-SO 4 2− system, enhancing the electrophilicity of Ni 3+ sites and reducing the energy barrier across the HMFOR pathway. This work elucidates the synergistic mechanism of SO 4 2− in promoting NiOOH formation and optimizing reaction energetics, providing critical insights for designing advanced sulfide-based electrocatalysts for biomass valorization.

Coupling the ethanol electrooxidation reaction (EOR) with the hydrogen evolution reaction is an effective way to obtain green energy. Although Ni-based catalysts have the characteristics of low cost and good stability, meanwhile, the activity needs to be further improved. Here, we report a Ni-based heterojunction EOR catalyst, Ni3Co1(OH)x@Ni3S2, composed by two phases of Ni3S2 and Ni3Co1(OH)x. The obtained Ni3Co1(OH)x@Ni3S2 showed excellent EOR performance, which could achieve a high specific activity of 315.7 mA/cm2 at 1.40 V, which was 15.5 times that of Ni(OH)2 and superior to most reported Ni-based catalysts. The addition of Co regulates the d-band center and introduces additional positively charged centers for the strong adsorption of OH–. The anionic effect of Ni3S2 can accelerate oxidation of the Ni active centers to active Ni(III) sites. The heterojunction structure can enhance the cation and anion effects and the turnover rate of OH– species, improving the EOR performance.

Hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) and oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) are crucial for renewable energy production. Developing stable, cost-effective, and highly catalytic HER and OER electrocatalysts is paramount. In this study, a combination of hydrothermal synthesis and annealing was used to fabricate nickel sulfide (Ni 3 S 2 ) particle–embedded nanotubes supported on nickel (Ni) foam (Ni 3 S 2 PN/NF). The Ni 3 S 2 PN/NF structures featured a highly branched morphology with a large specific surface area, surpassing that of conventional Ni metal nanotubes. This design increased the number of reactive sites and enhanced the charge-transfer process. The Ni foam substrate expanded the contact area of Ni 3 S 2 , thereby improving conductivity and facilitating the adsorption/desorption of intermediates on the Ni 3 S 2 surface. Density functional theory calculations showed that the electronic structure of Ni 3 S 2 provides excellent conductivity. Moreover, the multi-branched structure and inherent conductivity of the NiS nanomaterials enhanced the Ni 3 S 2 PN/NF performance in 1M KOH, with overpotentials of 87 and 210 mV with iR compensation at 10 mA cm −2 for the HER and OER, respectively. The synthesized Ni 3 S 2 PN/NF also exhibited robust durability for 20 h. These results demonstrate that Ni 3 S 2 PN/NF is an excellent catalyst for both HER and OER.

Non-precious and stable electrocatalysts towards both oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction (OER/HER) are essential for effective overall water splitting in alkaline solution. In this study, a sulfur defective and manganese-doped nickel sulfide nanosheet that uniformly grown on nickel foam substrate (Mn–Ni3S2–x@NF) is synthesized. In alkaline solution, the Mn–Ni3S2–x@NF showed a low overpotential of 76 and 110 mV for OER and HER at 10 mA cm−2, respectively, together exhibiting excellent stability for both OER and HER reaction. It was confirmed by the experimental results that sulfur defects and Mn-doping synergistically optimized the electronic structure of Mn–Ni3S2–x with increased electrical conductivity and enhanced OER/HER activity. Moreover, amorphous nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) was observed by in situ Raman during the OER condition, suggesting NiOOH is the active phase for OER reaction. Furthermore, the electrolyzer assembled by Mn–Ni3S2–x@NF merely needs 1.46 V to reach 10 mA cm−2 and shows good stability as well. This study provides a feasible way to prepare high-efficiency bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting.
