Substrate self-derived porous rod-like NiS/Ni9S8/NF heterostructures as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Yixuan Li,Peiyan Li,Jiahui Jiang,Ting Zhao,Guancheng Xu,Li Zhang

A self-derivation strategy using conductive substrates is used to prepare one-piece highly efficient bifunctional electrodes, where the chosen substrate acts as both an active catalyst precursor and a conductive carrier. Here, a bifunctional catalyst, porous NiS/Ni9S8/NF-2 nanorods, was synthesized by low-temperature vulcanization after an oxalic acid etching process. To reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2, NiS/Ni9S8/NF-2 requires only a tiny overpotential of 115 mV for the HER and 176 mV for the OER, and demonstrates sustained activity for 100 hours with almost any degradation. The substrate self-derived NiS/Ni9S8/NF-2 catalyst for overall water splitting requires only a small voltage of 1.52 V to deliver 10 mA cm−2 with excellent stability. Experimental results show that the heterostructured electrocatalysts impart good catalytic properties of NiS/Ni9S8/NF-2 by modulating the electronic structure and promoting the reconstruction process from sulfides to hydroxides. This work demonstrates the success of the substrate self-derivation strategy to achieve high catalytic activity and provide a new autogenous growth technique for electrode fabrication.

Synergistic morphology and interface engineering: A dual strategy for ultra-efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution over NiS/ZnxCd1-xS heterostructures

Xin Wang,Rui Fang,Ruyi Meng,Ruiding Fei,Zhiping Yan

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) represents one of the key technologies for realizing renewable energy conversion and storage. However, the precise development of efficient HER photocatalysts remains a critical challenge due to rapid charge recombination. In this study, the NiS/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (NZCS-X) Schottky junctions were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal deposition of NiS nanoparticles on coral-like Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S nanoclusters. Under visible light irradiation, the optimal composite material achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 104.48 mmol h −1 g −1 —over 41 and 2 times higher than that of pristine CdS (2.52 mmol h −1 g −1 ) and Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (47.92 mmol h −1 g −1 ). Mechanistically, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms the electron transfer from Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S to NiS. Femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy reveals that the average carrier lifetime decreases to 4.83 ps in the composite, providing direct evidence of ultrafast interfacial electron extraction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate that metallic NiS acts as an electron sink to optimize the Gibbs free energy (ΔG H∗ ). This work concludes that the synergistic engineering of morphology and Schottky interfaces is a decisive strategy for designing high-performance sulfide photocatalysts.

Fabrication of Multiple-Phase Magnesium-Based Hydrides with Enhanced Hydrogen Storage Properties by Activating NiS@C and Mg Powder

Dandan Peng,Ying Zhang,Shumin Han

Magnesium hydride is considered as a promising candidate for hydrogen storage; however, the sluggish kinetics and thermodynamic stability seriously obstruct its industrial applications. Hence, in order to improve the hydrogen storage performances of magnesium hydride, NiS@C additive was ball-milled with Mg powder to build NiS@C/Mg. The MgH2/Mg2NiH4 polyphase hydrides were in situ formed after hydrogenated activation and turned into Mg/Mg2Ni phases during the dehydrogenation process, establishing a cycle of hydrogen absorption and desorption. The NiS@C/Mg composite showed enhanced de/hydrogenation rates: it could quickly absorb 6.02 wt % H2 within 5 min at 250 °C and desorb 5.34 wt % H2 at 300 °C. Moreover, even at the temperature of 50 °C, it could reach 3.23 wt % hydrogen absorption capacity, and the apparent hydrogen desorption activation energy for MgH2 decreased to 60.45 kJ mol–1. It also delivered a high cyclic stability performance of 98.9% for hydrogen absorption and 98.5% for hydrogen desorption after 50 cycles. The enhanced de/absorption kinetics of NiS@C/Mg were ascribed to the synergistic effects of multiple-phase MgH2/Mg2NiH4 hydrides and the in situ formed MgS catalyst, and the existence of C also effectively prevented the passivation and agglomeration of multiple-phase particles. The method of in situ generating of multiple-phase hydrides and catalysts provides a new view for the preparation of high-performance hydrogen storage materials.

Highly crystalline, small sized, monodisperse α-NiS nanocrystal ink as an efficient counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells

Xiuwen Wang,Buhe Batter,Ying Xie,Kai Pan,Yongping Liao,Chunmei Lv,Mingxia Li,Siyu Sui,Honggang Fu

We report the synthesis of highly crystalline, small sized, α-NiS nanocrystal inks for the fabrication of a counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells. Monodisperse α-NiS nanocrystals (about 7 nm) are obtained via a noninjection, solution-phase chemical synthesis method. During the growth process of α-NiS nanocrystals, the Ni–oleate complex, which is generated in situ from the reaction of nickel chloride and sodium oleate, is decomposed and acts effectively as a growth source in synthesizing monodisperse nanocrystals. By controlling the reaction temperature, the resultant nanocrystal sizes and crystallinity can be well tuned. Compared to conventionally obtained NiS bulk materials, monodisperse α-NiS nanocrystals possess abundant catalytic reaction sites for dye-sensitized solar cells due to their small particle size and high crystallinity. First-principles calculations have been employed for the first time to investigate the adsorption energy of I3− molecules on the (111) surface of α-NiS with equilibrium shape. DSSCs based on monodisperse α-NiS nanocrystal ink with higher crystallinity display a power conversion efficiency of 7.33%, which is comparable to that based on the Pt cathode (7.53%), but significantly higher than that based on the bulk NiS (4.64%) and relatively low-crystalline α-NiS nanocrystals (6.32%). It can be attributed to more reaction catalytic sites due to the surface effect of small α-NiS nanocrystals, and the highest work function level (5.5 eV) that matched the redox shuttle potential. We believe that our method paves a promising way to design and synthesize advanced counter electrode materials for energy harvesting.

An efficient and stable MnCo@NiS catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction constructed by a step-by-step electrodeposition way

Xiangxi Wang,Lei Li,Liangge Xu,Zhao Wang,Zhuoyan Wu,Zhiliang Liu,Piaoping Yangs

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is vital for water electrolysis which demands low-cost, durable, and efficient electrocatalysts . Recently, 3d transition metal based OER catalysts become very attractive due to their abundant earth reserve and low price. However, these transition metals still suffer from severe dissolution problem and inappropriate adsorption ability to the intermediate species during OER catalysis. Herein, we prepared Mn and Co co-decorated Ni composites nanosheets (MnCo@NiS) via a facile step-by-step electrodeposition way, which showed near-optimal adsorption energy to oxygenated intermediates and much better electrocatalytic OER performance than single metal decorated NiS or non-decorated one, especially requiring a low OER overpotential of only 286 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in an alkaline electrolyte and Tafel slope of 31.5 mV dec −1 . The results indicated Mn and Co co-decoration is very efficient way to change the electron distribution and optimize the adsorption energy of NiS, leading to the high OER performance. In particular, the MnCo@NiS electrode demonstrates a highly impressive stability with not only much less cation dissolution but negligible degradation after 20 h durability test at 50 mA cm −2 .

Core–Shell NiS@SrTiO3 Nanorods on Titanium for Enhanced Osseointegration via Programmed Regulation of Bacterial Infection, Angiogenesis, and Osteogenesis

Zheng Liu,Hong Ding,Lin Qi,Jing Wang,Yubao Li,Limin Liu,Ganjun Feng,Li Zhang

Developing bone implants with dynamic self-adjustment of antibacterial, angiogenic, and osteogenic functions in line with a bone regenerative cascade is highly required in orthopedics. Herein, a unique core–shell nanorods array featuring a thin layer of NiS coated on each SrTiO3 nanorod (NiS@SrTiO3) was in situ constructed on titanium (Ti) through a two-step hydrothermal treatment. Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the photoresponsive effect of NiS layer in synergy with the physical perforation of SrTiO3 nanorods initially enabled in vitro antibacterial rates of 96.5% to Escherichia coli and 93.1% to Staphylococcus aureus. With the degradation of the NiS layer, trace amounts of Ni ions were released, which accelerated angiogenesis by upregulating the expression of vascular regeneration-related factors, while the gradual exposure of SrTiO3 nanorods could simultaneously enhance the surface hydrophilicity in favor of cell adhesion and slowly release Sr ions to promote the proliferation and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. The in vivo assessment verified not only the satisfactory antibacterial effect but also the superior osteogenic ability of the NiS@SrTiO3/Ti group with the aid of NIR irradiation, finally promoting the osseointegration of the Ti implant. The modification method endowing Ti implant with antibacterial, angiogenic, and osteogenic functions provides a new strategy to improve the long-term reliability of Ti-based devices.

Biological Regulation on Iodine Using Nano-Starch for Preventing Thyroid Dysfunction

Qinggele Borjihan,Xuefang Liang,Ting Chen,Douxin Xiao,Yanling Zhang,Haixia Wu,Qing Zhang,Alideertu Dong

ABSTRACT The growing incidence of thyroid disease triggered by excess iodine uptake poses a severe health threat throughout the world. Extracellular interference therapies impede iodine transport across the sodium-iodide symporter (NIS) membrane protein and thus prevent excessive iodine uptake by thyroid cells, which may lessen the occurrence of disease. Herein, we for the first time utilized nano-starch particles (St NPs) to regulate iodine transport across the NIS protein of thyroid cells by using extracellular interference therapy. By precisely encapsulating iodine within the cavity of a glucan α-helix via hydrogen bonding, extracellular St NPs prevented excess iodine uptake by thyroid cells in vitro and in vivo ; this down-regulated the expression of NIS protein (0.06-fold) and autophagy protein LC3B-II (0.35-fold). We also found that St NPs regulated the metabolic pathway of iodine in zebrafish. We believe this proposed strategy offers a novel insight into controlling iodine uptake by the thyroid and indicates a new direction for preventing iodine-induced thyroid disease.

In-situ encapsulation of NiS into Ni-MOF as a photoelectrochemical cathode for HER-driven uranium extraction from aqueous solution

Jianwei Hu,Qingsong Zhang,Jie Wang,Qingyan Zhang,Qian Hu,Qingyi Zeng

Extracting uranium from uranium-containing wastewater can effectively address the issues of environmental pollution and uranium shortage. Reducing soluble U(VI) to insoluble U(IV) represents an effective strategy for uranium extraction from solution. However, the two axially coordinated oxygen atoms in the uranyl ion (UO₂ 2+ ) create a high energy barrier for electron migration, which impedes the reduction of UO₂ 2+ . Herein, an innovative photochemical system for the efficient uranium extraction from aqueous solutions through the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process is designed. In this process, NiS nanoclusters were in-situ encapsulated within Ni-MOF to form a cathode (NiS@Ni-MOF) with high HER activity. The photoanode consists of FTO-supported TiO₂ nanorod arrays coupled with a back-contact silicon solar cell (Si SC). Due to the high HER activity of the NiS@Ni-MOF cathode and the incorporation of the Si SC in the photoanode, the uranium extraction efficiency can reach 99.5 % within 15 min of illumination. This enhancement is attributed to the formation of NiS nanoclusters and the synergistic interaction between NiS and Ni-MOF, which alters the electronic structure. This work opens a new perspective for the extraction of uranium from the aqueous solution.

Preparation of flexible composite electrode with bacterial cellulose (BC)-derived carbon aerogel supported low loaded NiS for methanol electrocatalytic oxidation

Guang-Ya Hou,Zi-Ye Lyu,Yi-Ping Tang,Hua-Zhen Cao,Guo-Qu Zheng

In this study, carbon aerogel (CA) were obtained by inexpensive bacterial cellulose (BC) hydrogel freeze-dried and carbonized under N 2 atmosphere. Then nickel sulfide (NiS)/CA composite aerogel electrodes with different contents were successfully prepared by a one-step solvothermal method . The morphology, phases and surface electronic state of these electrodes were characterized by SEM/TEM, XRD and XPS , respectively, and their electrocatalytical properties for methanol oxidation were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in the alkaline media of methanol. The NiS particles dispersed uniformly on CA, and the obtained material maintained the reticulated porous structure of BC. The methanol oxidation peak current density of CNS-0.5 at 0.8 V reached 43 mA/cm 2 (263 mA/mg). After 1000 cycles, the peak current density retained 92% of the initial state. The composite electrode has good catalytic activity and good cycle performance for methanol catalysis. Nickel sulfide with high crystallinity transforms to nickel oxide with low crystallinity after a long cycle test, which results in excellent cycle performance of the composite. NiS/CA electrodes have the potential for application in portable or wearable devices .

Facile Synthesis of a Nickel Sulfide (NiS) Hierarchical Flower for the Electrochemical Oxidation of H2O2 and the Methanol Oxidation Reaction (MOR)

Jingchao Zhang,Chunying Xu,Daojun Zhang,Jingli Zhao,Shuxian Zheng,Huimin Su,Feifei Wei,Baiqing Yuan,Carlos Fernandez

The synthesis of a novel hierarchical flower-like NiS via a solvothermal method for the electrochemcial oxidation of H2O2 on a carbon paste electrode with high catalytic activity for the (MOR) in an alkaline medium has been reported. Novel nickel sulfide (NiS) hierarchical flower-like structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscopy. A carbon paste electrode was modified with the as-prepared hierarchical flower-like NiS, resulting in a high electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of H2O2. The NiS-modified electrode was used for H2O2 sensing, which was achieved over a wide linear range from 0.5 μM to 1.37 mM (I/μA = −0.19025 + 0.06094 C/mM) with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.3 μM and a limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 0.8 μM. The hierarchical flower-like NiS also exhibited a high electrocatalytic activity for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in an alkaline medium with a high tolerance toward the catalyst-poisoning species generated during the MOR. The MOR proceeded via the direct electrooxidation of methanol on the oxidized NiS surface layer because the oxidation peak potential of the MOR was more positive than that of the oxidation of NiS.

One-Step Scalable Synthesis of 3D Self-Supported Superaerophobic Ce-Coupled Ni3S2/NiS@NF Nanobud Catalyst for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Mengjie Lu,Run Cheng,Li Wang,Dandan Liang,Meng Qin,Bili Wang,Rui Song,Duo Chen

The elaborate design of inexpensive, high-performance electrocatalysts from earth-abundant elements toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical in various (electro)chemical processes. Herein, a novel binder-free catalyst of Ce-coupled Ni3S2/NiS supported on Ni foam (Ce-Ni3S2/NiS@NF) is successfully synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal method that enables practical feasibility with a significant enhancement of OER activity through anchoring Ce dopants on an Ni3S2/NiS nanobud host. Ce species coupling can modulate electronic structure, which reduces the reaction energy barrier and optimizes OER catalytic activity. More profoundly, the superhydrophilic and superaerophobic properties of the Ce-Ni3S2/NiS@NF electrode further promote mass transfer. As a result, the Ce-Ni3S2/NiS@NF electrode exhibits excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 236 and 350 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, and long-term durability for 24 h in alkaline medium. These results could supply valuable guidelines for the design of other OER catalysts and beyond.

In Situ Synthesis of NiS Nanowall Networks on Ni Foam as a TCO-Free Counter Electrode for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Weijun Ke,Guojia Fang,Hong Tao,Pingli Qin,Jing Wang,Hongwei Lei,Qin Liu,Xingzhong Zhao

Nickel sulfide (NiS) nanowall networks have been prepared by a novel one-step hydrothermal method on a nickel (Ni) foam substrate. The Ni foam has a high conductivity and porous structure. To our knowledge, the Ni foam is used as a conductive substrate for the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) for the first time. The Ni foam is used as not only the conductive substrate but also the Ni sources of the reaction. The Ni foam supported NiS prepared by this simple hydrothermal method shows high catalytic activity for reduction of triiodide ions. The DSSC with a transparent conductive oxide (TCO)-free NiS counter electrode (CE) was herein developed and showed a higher power conversion efficiency of 8.55% than that with a TCO supported NiS CE (7.47%) and a TCO supported platinum CE (7.99%).
