High–entropy oxide (HEO) are highly efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), meeting the criteria for low cost, high activity, and long–term stability. This enhanced efficiency originates from their multicomponent composition and the synergistic interactions among the constituent elements. However, their inherent low conductivity and the lack of effective synthesis methods remain challenges. In this study, highly dispersed nanoscale spinel–type oxides (Fe 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.2 Cr 0.2 ) 3 O 4 /CC, were prepared on carbon cloth (CC) through rapid one–step electrodeposition at room temperature, combined with Joule heating (JH), abbreviated as JH-HEO/CC. The introduction of abundant oxygen vacancies by JH's 'instantaneous–non–equilibrium' characteristic enhances ionic conductivity and optimizes reaction pathways. Thanks to these defects, the unique 'cocktail' effect allows these HEO to deliver a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 at an overpotential of 282 mV, while demonstrating excellent stability. This study establishes effective synthetic and modification strategies for high-performance OER electrocatalysts.

Preventing agglomeration and corrosion of metal electrocatalysts at nanoscale is crucial for electrochemical energy conversion, such as fuel cell and overall water splitting , where all the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are the core. Herein, an effective strategy is developed for preparing multifunctional self-supporting electrocatalysts with uniformly distributed cobalt nanoparticles and clusters. Benefiting from good electrical conductivity and multiple active sites, the trifunctional self-supporting catalyst free from stacking and aggregating exhibits excellent OER and HER activities with an overpotential of 270 and 110 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline media . The ORR performance was tested in 0.1 M KOH solution with a half-wave potential of ∼0.80 V and a limiting current density of ∼ −4.8 mA cm −2 . Our finding provides an opportunity for the rational design of multifunctional and highly-efficient self-supporting electrocatalysts towards the integration of electrochemical energy conversion.

Electrocatalytic water splitting, consisting of anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), represents a promising renewable energy technology for producing ultra-high purity hydrogen through efficient energy conversion and storage. However, the practical implementation of this technology in alkaline environments is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of both HER and OER, which significantly limit water splitting efficiency. The development of highly active and stable alkaline HER/OER electrocatalysts is urgently needed yet remains challenging. In this work, we synthesized a novel two-dimensional (2D) highly conjugated COF/MOF composite (COF-C4N/THQ-M) through a post-synthesis method. This method enables controlled growth of part of COF-C4N at the edges of THQ-M MOF to prevent structural disintegration of THQ-M, consequently to enhance surface charge transfer efficiency and further to improve catalytic activity and stability. By regulating metal sites, COF-C4N/THQ-Co and COF-C4N/THQ-Co2Fe1 are proposed to be optimal alkaline HER electrocatalysts with an overpotential of 58 mV at -10 mA cm -2 and alkaline OER electrocatalyst with 314 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , respectively, superior to most of the reported non-precious metals electrocatalysts. The charge transfer characteristics and the pathways of alkaline HER and OER were calculated based on DFT calculations to reveal the synergistic mechanism of COF-C4N and THQ-M. This work provides a novel idea for developing highperformance bifunctional electrocatalysts for alkaline water splitting applications based on hybrid highly conjugated COF/MOF systems.

Graphical High OER/ORR performances : boosted oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as well as optimized oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and high-activity zinc-air batteries (ZAB), from a nitrogen-doped carbon nanomaterial (NCM) inserted Ni−Co layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) electrocatalyst on nickel foam are achieved. The super thin NCM prepared by calcination of self-assembled perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride/dicyandiamide improves the conductivity, electroactive surface area of NiCo-LDH nanoplates. Herein, a high performance bifunctional catalyst was prepared by inserting N-doped nanomaterials into Ni−Co layered dihydroxides (NiCo-LDH) nanoplates for high performance zinc-air battery. By using self-assembly of perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride and dicyandiamide in the hydrothermal condition, a nitrogen-containing super thin carbonaceous nanosheet is achieved after calcination. Then NCM inserted NiCo-LDH nanoplates attached to nickel foam (NiCo-LDH/NCM@NF) are synthesized by in-situ production of NiCo-LDH species on NCM wrapped NF. The specific NCM improves the conductivity, electroactive surface area and the ORR/OER bifunctional activity of NiCo-LDH nanoplates. In addition, benefited from the formed rich oxygen vacancies, NiCo-LDH/NCM@NF delivers the low OER overpotential (352 mV at 50 mA cm −2 ) and boosted ORR performance with a half-wave potential of 0.765 V vs RHE. As the air cathode, the fabricated ZAB devices show a satisfactory capacity of 685 mAh g −1 and the energy density of 158 mW cm −2 .

The development of single electrode with multifunctional purposes for electrochemical devices remains a symbolic challenge in recent technology. This work explores interfacially-rich transition metal nitride hybrid that consist of nickel nitride and vanadium oxynitride (VO 0.26 N 0.52 ) on robust carbon fiber (denoted CF/Ni 3 N/VON) as trifunctional electrode for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and sodium ion batteries (SIBs). The as-prepared CF/Ni 3 N/VON exhibits low HER overpotential of 48 mV@10 mA cm −2 , OER overpotential of 287 mV@10 mA cm −2 , and sodium-ion anode storage reversible capacity of 555 mA h g −1 @0.2 C. Theoretical analyses reveal that the Ni 3 N effectively facilitates hydrogen desorption for HER, increases the electrical conductivity for OER, and promotes the Na-ion storage intercalation process, while the VON substantially elevates the water dissociation kinetics for HER, accelerates the adsorption of OH* intermediate for OER and enhances the Na-ion surface adsorption storage process. Owing to the excellent HER and OER performances of the CF/Ni 3 N/VON electrode, an overall water splitting device denoted as CF/Ni 3 N/VON//CF/Ni 3 N/VON was not only assembled showing an operating voltage of 1.63 V at current density of 10 mA cm −2 but was also successfully self-powered by the assembled CF/Ni 3 N/VON//CF/Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 flexible sodium ion battery. This work will contribute to the development of efficient and cost-effective flexible integrated electrochemical energy devices.

Electrochemical water splitting, the most direct and clean method used for the production of hydrogen, requires highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts that can accelerate hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) by overcoming their kinetics barriers. Herein, self-supported F, N codoping CoP nanosheets (denoted as FN-CoP NS) are prepared as efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts. Codoping of F and N neutralizes the electronegativity of surface P-O by cleaving the Co-P-O of non-metallic P sites on the surface (O derived from the surface oxidation). This contributes to an increased Co 2+ content with considerable adjustable electronegativity and also optimizes HER and OER processes. As a result, FN-CoP NS requires 66 and 241 mV overpotentials to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm −2 during HER and OER, respectively. A full water electrolyzer equipped FN-CoP NS as both cathode and anode only require 1.57 V to drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 and to sustain 50 mA cm −2 for 48 h. This work adjusts the electronic structure of metal phosphides by a double anion codoping strategy, which provides a reference value for the rational design of efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts.

The control in synthesis and composition plays a vital role in exploring cost-effective efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting. This paper reported a glycerol-assisted solvothermal strategy to synthesize Ru-based electrocatalyst (Ru-G/CC), in-situ growing Ru nanoparticles (NPs) on carbon cloth (CC). The optimal Ru-G/CC exhibits a boosted HER activity (overpotential of 40 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 , Tafel slope 76 mV dec −1 ), surpassing benchmark 20 wt% Pt/C; experimental characterization and DFT calculations verified that Ru NPs with a mixed amorphous/crystalline structure in Ru-G/CC effectively decrease the reaction energy barrier in HER. Also, the hydrothermally derived Ru-H 2 O/CC-350 exhibited a high electrocatalytic OER activity (overpotential of 270 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 , Tafel slope 63 mV dec −1 ), exceeding the commercial RuO 2 . This work provides a successful story via regulating synthetic parameters to design efficient and stable Ru-based electrocatalysts for water splitting.

It remains a grand challenge to transform zero-dimensional (0D) noble-metal building blocks into well-defined two-dimensional (2D) architectures, which normally lacking an intrinsic driving force for anisotropic permutation in 2D manner. Herein, we report the first example of using a simple but efficient hydrothermal route to synthesize and self-stabilize ultrathin 0D PdIr NCs (2.4 nm) into a new class of freestanding 2D porous PdIr nanosheets with lateral size up to 1.5 μm (PdIr PNSs). Distinguished from previously reported 2D noble-metal nanosheets, the resultant 2D PdIr PNSs with immense surface area-to-volume ratio and high density of exposed atoms largely retain the special natures of 0D PdIr building blocks and further optimize their catalytic activity and stability at 2D manner. Electrochemical studies show that 2D PdIr PNSs deliver both excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities with an HER overpotential of 40 mV and an OER overpotential of 285 mV affording 10 mA cm −2 , outperforming those of 0D PdIr building blocks. The present work highlights the importance of tuning 0D nanocrystals at 2D manner for enhancing their OER and HER performance.

Developing catalysts with long term stability at large current densities for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a major challenge. Herein, the NiFeSe arrays were synthesized on the commercial nickel-iron foams (NFF) substrate using a one-step hydrothermal method by changing the hydrazine hydrate to solvent volume ratio in the precursors and reaction temperature. The NiFeSe/NFF catalyst prepared at the hydrazine hydrate to solvent volume ratio of 1:4 and reaction temperature of 160 °C shows the optimal OER electrocatalytic performance with a low overpotential of 245, 259 and 269 mV at the current density of 100, 200 and 300 mA cm −2 , small Tafel slope of 44.7 mVdec −1 and large electrochemical surface area (ECSA) of 600 cm 2 in 1 M KOH solution. Importantly, the OER activities of the NiFeSe/NFF catalyst exhibit enhancement during long-term stability test at a bias of 1.04 V (vs. Hg/HgO) for 327 h. During long-term continuous OER electrochemical process , the formation of NiFeOOH/NiFeSe heterojunction resulting from the surface reconstruction are responsible for enhancing OER activities by modulating the electron structure of interface and increasing the adsorption ability of intermediate *OH and *OOH on the surface of NiFeOOH. Our work provides new idea to design and construct heterostucture catalyst via the in-situ surface reconstruction.

Composition optimization, structural design, and introduction of external magnetic fields into the catalytic process can remarkably improve the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of a catalyst. NiFe2O4@(Ni, Fe)S/P materials with a heterogeneous core–shell structure were prepared by the sulfide/phosphorus method based on spinel-structured NiFe2O4 nanomicrospheres. After the sulfide/phosphorus treatment, not only the intrinsic activity of the material and the active surface area were increased but also the charge transfer resistance was reduced due to the internal electric field. The overpotential of NiFe2O4@(Ni, Fe)P at 10 mA cm–2 (iR correction), Tafel slope, and charge transfer resistance were 261 mV, 42 mV dec–1, and 3.163 Ω, respectively. With an alternating magnetic field, the overpotential of NiFe2O4@(Ni, Fe)P at 10 mA cm–2 (without iR correction) declined by 45.5% from 323 mV (0 mT) to 176 mV (4.320 mT). Such enhancement of performance is primarily accounted for the enrichment of the reactive ion OH– on the electrode surface induced by the inductive electric potential derived from the Faraday induction effect of the AMF. This condition increased the electrode potential and thus the charge transfer rate on the one hand and weakened the diffusion of the active substance from the electrolyte to the electrode surface on the other hand. The OER process was dominantly controlled by the charge transfer process under low current conditions. A fast charge transfer rate boosted the OER performance of the catalyst. At high currents, diffusion exerted a significant effect on the OER process and low OH– diffusion rates would lead to a decrease in the OER performance of the catalyst.

Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic framework (MOF) materials have become a research hotspot due to their ultra-large specific surface area and efficient charge transport, but their controllable preparation is still challenging. In this study, using molybdate anion, a small molecular modulation strategy is offered to precisely modulate the structure of cobalt-imidazolium MOF by liquid-phase reaction to successfully obtain ultrathin 2D MoCo-MOF shreds. High-valence molybdenum modulates the electronic structure and oxidation state of cobalt in MOFs, which in turn influences the growth of crystalline and morphology, leading to ultrathin MoCo-MOF structure. Synergism for molybdenum and cobalt in MoCo-MOF significantly enhanced the electrocatalytic activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1M KOH. Meanwhile, the material also exhibited excellent uric acid (UA) detection performance with high sensitivity and wide detection range (4–800 μM). Our study verifies the effectiveness of oxometallate anion for structural modulation, provides a new way for material morphology modulation, and develops the potential of ultrathin 2D MoCo-MOF shreds for water electrolysis and UA detection.

The development of low-cost and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of importance for the commercialization of green and sustainable energy conversion devices. In this work, noble metal-free XFeCoNiCu (X = Cr, Mg, and Mn) high entropy alloys were prepared with a facile pyrolytic reduction approach while the structure and composition were characterized by XRD, ICP-OES, TEM, HRTEM, and XPS. The prepared quinary alloys demonstrated excellent activity and stability for both ORR and OER, which was even superior to that of commercial Pt/C and RuO₂. Moreover, all three catalysts exhibited considerable potential for bifunctional catalysis, with a ΔE gap of 0.659 V for CrFeCoNiCu, a ΔE gap of 0.692 V for MnFeCoNiCu, and a ΔE gap of 0.727 V for MgFeCoNiCu, which was much better than that of the Pt/C+RuO 2 combination (0.723 V). The superior performance was further revealed by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations with projection density of states (PDOS) and free energy change. The strategy proposed in this study provides an economical approach to design and develop bifunctional electrocatalysts with exceptional performance.
