An ultra-low platinum loading ORR electrocatalyst with high efficiency: Synergistic effects of Pt and Fe-N-C support

Tang Wenbin,Xia Shuyue,Chou Haiwen,Zhao Jianan,Zhou Yi,Huang Qinghong,Yu Nengfei,Wu Yuping

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays a crucial role in key processes of fuel cells and zinc-air batteries. To enable commercialization, reducing the platinum (Pt) content and increasing the specific activity per unit mass is essential. A promising approach involves synthesizing of Fe-N-C precursors via the polyaniline (PANI) pathway, which ensures a uniform distribution of Fe-N-C species and facilitates the subsequent adsorption of platinum ions. This leads to the formation of Pt-Fe bimetallic alloys. The synergistic interaction between Pt and Fe-N-C sites promotes the homogeneous dispersion of Pt and the formation of smaller particle sizes, which in turn enhances intrinsic activity and stability of the catalyst. Notably, the Pt/Fe-N-C catalyst, featuring an ultra-low Pt loading of just 1.79 wt%, exhibits a remarkable doubling of mass activity compared to conventional catalysts. Moreover, zinc-air batteries using this catalyst achieve an impressive peak power density of 200 mW/cm 2 .

Hetero-structured noble metal-free high-entropy alloy CrFeCoNiCu/Mn-based oxide for highly efficient ORR/OER bifunctional catalysis

Qing Chen,Xinyu Zou,Ling Shi,Maocong Hu,Mao Peng,Zhenhua Yao

While bifunctional electrocatalysts enabling both oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution (OER) reactions are recognized as pivotal chemical steps for next-generation energy devices, their practical implementation persists as a formidable scientific challenge. In this study, hetero-structured catalyst (CrFeCoNiCu/Mn 3 O 4 /MnO/NC) was successfully synthesized in situ containing both high-entropy alloy and spinel manganese-based oxide by a simple heat treatment process while two control samples (CrFeCoNiCu/Mn 3 O 4 /NC and CrFeCoNiCu/NC) were also prepared. It exhibited excellent catalytic performance and stability for both ORR and OER compared with commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 catalysts. The superior bifunctional performance was further observed with the overpotential gaps (ΔE gap ) of the three electrodes being 0.634 V, 0.655 V, and 0.698 V, respectively, which were lower than those of the combination of RuO 2 and Pt/C at 0.723 V. The enhanced catalytic performance was subsequently corroborated by density-functional theory (DFT). This study proposes an alternative method for the synthesis and design of high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Nitrogen doped single-walled carbon nanohorns as Pt catalyst carrier: Balance of strong durability and high activity of ORR

Xie Zhipeng,Zhang Da,Peng Haiyang,Lei Yong,Yang Bin,Liang Feng

Nitrogen-doped single-walled carbon nanohorns (N-SWCNHs) can serve as an effective carrier for platinum (Pt) catalysts, which has the potential to improve the electrocatalytic activity of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the operation life of the catalyst. In this work, dahlia-like SWCNHs with N contents ranging from 2.1at% to 4.3at% are controllably synthesized via arc discharge and applied as a carrier of Pt nanoparticles (NPs), denoted as Pt/N-SWCNHs. Pt/N-SWCNHs-2:1 (graphite and melamine with the mass ratio of 2:1) exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity (onset potential = 0.95 V). The half-wave potential of Pt/N-SWCNHs-2:1 is only reduced by 2 mV after 3000 cyclic voltammetry cycles. This can be attributed to the enhanced dispersion of Pt NPs and the strong electronic interaction between the N-SWCNHs and Pt, facilitated by the optimal nitrogen doping level. The results of this work offer important perspectives on the design and enhancement of Pt-based electrocatalysts for ORR applications, highlighting the critical role of the nitrogen doping level in balancing the electrocatalytic activity and long-term stability.

Enhanced ORR kinetics and stability through synergy of Pt-Ni clustering and porous N-doped C/Ca aerogel support

Muhammad Umair Mushtaq,Zhu Lin,Danni Li,Khurram Shahzad Ayub,Zain Abbas,Waqas Qamar Zaman,Ji Yang

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is fundamental in numerous electrochemical energy conversion technologies, necessitating efficient catalysts to enhance reaction kinetics and reduce precious metal usage. This study focuses strategic clustering of Pt-Ni on Calcium Oxide/activated carbon (C/Ca) aerogels. Electrochemical analyses confirmed that incorporating Ni into Pt matrices significantly enhanced ORR activities with Pt 25 Ni 75 -C/Ca composition emerged as optimum. A positive shift in half-wave potential (905 mV vs. RHE) and impressive mass activity (72.50 Ag −1 at 85 V) highlight the potential of this composite as a highly effective and stable ORR catalyst. Pt-C/Ca demonstrated performance fluctuation, while Pt 25 Ni 75 -C/Ca showed remarkable stability after 40,000 cycles. Furthermore, C/Ca aerogels exhibited a significantly increased BET surface area, and the presence of Pt-Ni/pyridinic-N species on its surface C/Ca aerogel provided supplementary active sites that facilitated the adsorption and reduction of O 2 during ORR.

Simultaneous regulation of thermodynamic and kinetic behavior on FeN3P1 single-atom configuration by Fe2P for efficient bifunctional ORR/OER

Enze Zhu,Chaoyang Shi,Jie Yu,Haodong Jin,Linxiang Zhou,Xikun Yang,Mingli Xu

Single-atom catalysts have been extensively researched in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER) due to their tunable coordination environment. However, the linear scaling relationship (LSR) of oxygen intermediate adsorption energies imposes limitations in simultaneously enhancing ORR/OER. Herein, a unique asymmetrically coordinated FeN 3 P 1 single-atom configuration coupled by Fe 2 P nanoparticle is synthesized via a prefabricated Fe-N/P coordination strategy. The accentuated structural distortion induced by Fe 2 P can effectively break the LSR, lowering the energy barriers for ORR/OER. Kinetically, a modulation of OH − concentration by Fe 2 P on the catalytic interface was identified by finite element simulation and molecular dynamics simulation, which can positively facilitate ORR/OER kinetics. The obtained Fe 2 P@FeN 3 P 1 -NC catalyst exhibits excellent bifunctional ORR/OER (∆E = 0.65 V) and a promising application in zinc-air battery. This work provides a valuable insight into simultaneous regulation of thermodynamic and kinetic behavior by tailored structure distortion and enriched surface ions for ORR/OER.

Soybean powder enables the synthesis of Fe–N–C catalysts with high ORR activities in microbial fuel cell applications

Ting Huang,Jinhui Wei,Xiaoting Zhu,Enren Zhang

The development of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) into a new type of carbon-neutral wastewater treatment technology requires efficient and low-cost oxygen reduction reaction catalysts in air cathodes. The use of raw soybean powder was investigated for synthesizing Fe–N–C ORR catalysts in a sacrificial SiO 2 support method. ZnCl 2 etching in the synthesis was found to facilitate the formation of hierarchical porous structures of Fe–N–C catalysts. Fe–N–C(1-1) catalyst synthesized with an optimal soybean/ZnCl 2 mass ratio of 1:1 exhibited the highest ORR activity in air cathodes. The use of the obtained Fe–N–C(1-1) catalyst enables a maximum power production of ~0.480 mW cm −2 in MFCs, higher than commercial Pt/C (0.438 mW cm −2 ) with the same catalyst loading of 2 mg cm −2 . Long-term MFC operations demonstrated that the Fe–N–C synthesized from raw soybean have high stability and toxic tolerance, indicating that abundant low cost soybean biomass is a potential material for ORR catalyst development in MFC applications.

Preparation of N-doped nano-hollow capsule carbon nanocage as ORR catalyst in alkaline solution by PVP modified F127

Zhongyu Qiu,Naibao Huang,Xiaowen Ge,Jiaping Xuan,Pei Wang

In order to reduce the cost of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, a metal-free N-doped carbon nanocage as ORR catalysts is prepared by using Polyethylene oxide-polypropylene oxide-polyethylene oxide (PEO-PPO-PEO) three-block copolymer (F127), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and Zn (OH) 2 as a carbon source, nitrogen source and the morphology retaining agent, respectively, via a self-template method. The structure and microstructure of the N-doped carbon nanocage are characterized via physical characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy , scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrochemical properties are evaluated in an O 2 -saturated alkaline solution. The obtained sample pyrolyzed at 800 °C with 10% content of PVP (C–N-800) presents nano-hollow carbon capsule with a diameter of 100 nm and shell thickness of 8 nm, and has the maximum surface area of 978 m 2 ·g −1 . In O 2 -saturated 0.1 M KOH solution, C–N-800's onset potential, limit current density, and half-wave potential, which are 0.87 V, 5.73 mA/cm 2 @0.45 V, and 0.77 V, respectively, are close to those of commercial 20% Pt/C catalysts. Meanwhile, its electrochemical performance only loss 11.75% after 5000 cycles, showing excellent ORR catalytic performance and stability. During self-assembly of F127, the added PVP participated into the process. Pyrolysis at 800 °C would result in the complete decomposition of F127 and PVP's lipophilic. So, the metal-free N-doped carbon nanocage was obtained and behaved excellent ORR catalytic activity and stability.

The intriguing ORR performance of iron and nitrogen co-doped biomass carbon composites incorporating surface-modified polyaniline-derived carbon

Junhong Ma,Zhizi Yao,Tuan K.A. Hoang,Yuemei Liu,Akang Sun

As a clean energy conversion device, fuel cell can greatly alleviate the environmental pollution problem. Developing cost-effective oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with high performance is of great significance to improve the efficiency of fuel cells and promote its large-scale use. Here, we successfully fabricated an iron and nitrogen co-doped carbon–carbon composite (Fe-N-C B350 -900Z@C PANI ) by modifying a pre-synthesized iron and nitrogen co-doped biomass carbon (Fe-N-C B350 -900Z) with polyaniline derived carbon (C PANI ). The obtained Fe-N-C B350 -900Z@C PANI displays excellent ORR catalytic activity, as reflected by the positive onset potential of 0.13 V vs Hg/HgO and high limiting current density of 5.92 mA cm −2 , which significantly outperforms the benchmark Pt/C (0.07 V and 4.70 mA cm −2 , respectively). Meanwhile, it also presents remarkable catalytic stability and the great methanol tolerance. The excellent catalytic performance of Fe-N-C B350 -900Z@C PANI is attributed to the merits of the hierarchical porous structure and large specific surface area up to 955 m 2 g −1 formed by synergism of C B and C PANI , which effectively promotes the mass transfer and accessibility of active sites.

Synergistically enhanced iron and zinc bimetallic sites as an advanced ORR electrocatalyst for flow liquid rechargeable Zn–air batteries

Zhi-Da Wang,Song Liang,Cheng-Kun Bai,Zhong-Feng Guo,Guo-Long Lu,Hang Sun,Zhen-Ning Liu,Hong-Ying Zang

N-coordinated transition-metal materials are promising electrocatalysts for various sustainable and efficient electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. Here we report a simple synthetic route for simultaneously crafting Fe and Zn bimetallic sites on 1D N-doped hollow mesoporous multi-walled carbon nanotubes (denoted as Fe–Zn/N/C/MWCNTs-800). Attributed to the synergistic effect between the Fe–Nx center and Zn–Nx center on the coupled conductive heterostructured carbon matrix with moderate pyridinic-N and graphitic-N species, the Fe–Zn/N/C/MWCNTs-800 catalyst exhibited remarkable ORR activity, favorable long-term stability, and remarkable methanol tolerance in an alkaline electrolyte, comparable to commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. Moreover, the assembled flow liquid rechargeable Zn–air batteries with Fe–Zn/N/C/MWCNTs-800 as a cathode material also exhibited excellent open-circuit voltage, power density, and cycling stability over 180 h. This report provides a general strategy for fabricating Zn-based N-coordinated transition-metal electrocatalysts for catalytic applications.

Ni3B as a highly efficient and selective catalyst for the electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide

Fahao Ma,Shuhua Wang,Xizhuang Liang,Cong Wang,Fengxia Tong,Zeyan Wang,Peng Wang,Yuanyuan Liu,Ying Dai,Zhaoke Zheng,Baibiao Huang

Electrocatalytic synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e − ORR) is an ideal method for the on-site H 2 O 2 production. Herein, Ni 3 B is identified as an active, selective, and stable catalyst for ORR to generate H 2 O 2 , which exhibits a high selectivity of over 90 % and an onset potential of ∼0.7 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Furthermore, the mass activity of Ni 3 B is about 16.5 A g -1 at 0.52 V (RHE), which is comparable to some noble metal alloys. Our experimental results suggest that the high performance of Ni 3 B originates from the alloying process of Ni and B atoms. The density functional theory calculations reveal that the inner B atoms with high electronegativity decrease the state density of Ni-3d orbital near the Fermi level relative to Ni, which optimizes the binding energy of OOH* and makes Ni 3 B a highly efficient and stable catalyst for the two-electron ORR.

Melt-salt-assisted direct transformation of solid oxide into atomically dispersed FeN4 sites on nitrogen-doped porous carbon

Jinwen Hu,Danyang Wu,Chao Zhu,Ce Hao,Cuncun Xin,Jiangwei Zhang,Jingya Guo,Nannan Li,Guifeng Zhang,Yantao Shi

Emerging heterogeneous catalysts with metal atomically dispersed on supports (tentatively termed single-atom catalysts, SACs) exhibit many appealing features in a wide variety of catalytic reactions , such as high activity and nearly 100% atom utilization. However, the synthesis of SACs currently requires not only multiple procedures but also appropriate precursors with special structures. Herein, the molten-salt assistance is presented as an effective means that enables the use of common metal oxides (such as Fe 2 O 3 and Co 2 O 3 ) and small organic molecules as precursors for the preparation of carbon-supported SACs through one-pot pyrolysis . Molten salts as templates that can be easily removed after synthesis also contribute to the formation of porous and nitrogen-doped carbon with a high specific area. More importantly, benefiting from the strong polarizing force of molten salts, the ionic bonds in oxides can be destabilized at high temperature. Subsequently, metal ions released from solid oxides are transformed into atomically dispersed active sites after being trapped by nitrogen (N) atoms on the carbon support. The as-prepared SAC with atomically dispersed Fe–N 4 sites demonstrates high activity, outstanding stability and good methanol tolerance in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in both alkaline and acidic media.

Co, N co-doped porous carbons as high-performance oxygen reduction electrocatalysts

Jing Zhang,Lianghao Song,Chenfei Zhao,Xiuping Yin,Yufeng Zhao

Although the Co and N co-doped carbon catalyst (Co-NC) has attracted much attention because of its low cost and the natural abundance of the dopants, it has a low oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and a high selectivity for the two-electron (2e - ) reduction of oxygen to H 2 O 2 , which affects its use in fuel cells. Co-NC catalysts were prepared by the pyrolysis of a mixture of cobalt chloride and chitosan pretreated with zinc chloride at 650, 750 and 850 o C, followed by washing with nitric acid and annealing at 900 o C. The results indicate that zinc chloride helps the complexing of chitosan with Co 2+ , which is also a chemical activator that generates pores, and annealing caused the evaporation of the spherical Zn metal nanoparticles formed by the carbothermal reduction of Zn ions, leading to a unique porous structure of the catalysts with spherical pores filled with spherical carbon nanoparticles formed by the growth of nitrogen-doped carbon as a result of the Co catalyst. The degree of graphitization is also improved by the Co catalyst. The Co-NC catalyst obtained at a pyrolysis temperature of 750 o Cshows the same four-electron (4e - ) reduction of oxygen as a commercial Pt/C catalyst, and a significantly higher ORR catalytic activity, longer-term stability and better methanol tolerance than a commercial Pt/C catalyst. These are due to its large specific surface area, high contents of pyridinic nitrogen and graphitic nitrogen that disperse the Co species and its excellent electrical conductivity.
