Facile fabrication of hydrophilic PAA-Ti/TiO2 nanocomposite for selective enrichment and detection of phosphopeptides from complex biological samples

Xiao-Na Wei,Hui-Long Wang

Highly selective enrichment of trace phosphorylated proteins or peptides from complex biological samples is of profound significance for the discovery of disease biomarkers in biological systems. In this study, a novel affinity material has been synthesized to improve the enrichment specificity for phosphopeptides by using PAAS as coupling molecule. In the resulting materials, highly abundant titanium is available for selective enrichment of phosphopeptides, with plenty of carboxylate groups that can inhibit nonspecific adsorption. The enrichment results demonstrated that the hydrophilic PAA-Ti/TiO 2 composite possesses excellent selectivity for phosphopeptides even at a very low molar ratio of phosphopeptides/non-phosphopeptides (1:1000), extreme sensitivity (the detection limit was at the fmol level), and high recovery of phosphopeptides (as high as 78%). Moreover, the as-prepared nanocomposite provides effective enrichment of phosphopeptides from real samples (mouse liver), showing great potential in the detection of low-abundance phosphopeptides in biological samples.

Synthesis of silk fibroin-g-PAA composite using H2O2-HRP and characterization of the in situ biomimetic mineralization behavior

Buguang Zhou,Min He,Ping Wang,Haitian Fu,Yuanyuan Yu,Qiang Wang,Xuerong Fan

Silk fibroin (SF) as a bioactive protein can offer growth substrates for hydroxyapatite (HAp) deposition. In the current work, graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) onto fibroin chains was carried out using hydrogen peroxide-horseradish peroxidase (H 2 O 2 -HRP) catalytic system, SF-g-polyacrylic acid (PAA) membranes was prepared subsequently, followed by in situ biomimetic mineralization in the Ca/P solutions, aiming at promoting the deposition of HAp and endowing the fibroin-based biocomposite with enhanced bioactivity. Meanwhile, p -hydroxyphenylacetamide (PHAD) and methyl acrylate (MA), as the model compounds of tyrosine residues in SF and vinyl monomer were used to disclose the mechanism of graft copolymerization. The data from FTIR and SEC chromatograms indicated that vinyl monomer was successfully graft copolymerized with SF during H 2 O 2 -HRP treatment. According to the results of XRD, SEM patterns and EDS-Mapping, mineral phases on the surfaces of SF-g-PAA membranes were detected after different cycles of biomimetic mineralization, and the mechanical property of SF-g-PAA/HAp membrane was noticeably improved. Cell viability and adhesion assays revealed that the composite of SF-g-PAA/HAp exhibited acceptable biocompatibility and outstanding adhesion property. The present work provides a novel method for preparation of the fibroin-based biomaterial for bone tissue engineering.

Revealing the crucial role of Carbon-Centered radicals in UV/PAA process for trace amounts of organic contaminants removal

Yuanxi Huang,Lu Luo,Shumin Zhu,Kai Yin,Lingjun Bu,Shiqing Zhou

Peracetic acid (PAA) is a promising peroxyacid to combine with ultraviolet (UV) to eliminate trace amounts of organic contaminants (TrOCs), with growing importance in water treatment. In spite of a large number of research on UV/PAA process, the underlying mechanism still require further investigation, due to the difficulties in analyzing the carbon-centered radicals. Here we demonstrated the crucial roles of the carbon-centered radicals (namely CH 3 C(O)OO ), via electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and kinetic models, with concentration of 4 orders magnitude higher than that of OH. Then, the theoretical calculation using density functional theory (DFT) showed that CH 3 C(O)OO and OH tended to attack phenol mostly through the route of radical adduct formation. The generated CH 3 C(O)OO and OH adducts may undergo further reactions to produce catechol and hydroquinone. Further, the environmental applicability of UV/PAA process for TrOC abatement was evaluated, including the effects of pH, PAA dosage, water constituents, as well as the variation of acute toxicity. Different from the OH-dominated process, kinetic analysis revealed that CH 3 C(O)OO was almost immune to the presence of water constituents, leading to the outperformance of UV/PAA process in actual water samples. Our present study could inform the application of UV/PAA process in water and wastewater treatment.

Self-calibrating colorimetric sensor assisted deep learning strategy for efficient and precise Fe(II) detection

Zhihao Liu,Tingting Yang,Yuwen Yan,Yongtao Tang,Jianxin Meng,Fengyu Li

Colorimetry is to determine the component content usually comparing or measuring the “RGB” values, which has the advantages of quick response and visual comparison. However, the widely reported “RGB” models are limited by requiring professional operation such as accurate sampling, insufficient information, cumbersome calculation, etc., which has significantly restricted the promotional application. Inspired by the PAA-PVA gel with excellent absorbing-swelling ability and superior response ability, indefinite volume addition has a significant difference in the swelling phenomenon of PAA-PVA hydrogel, the extent of this enlargement is directly related to the amount of testing sample absorbed, which can be applied to reflect testing sample volume added. In addition, benefited from a comprehensive and precise parameter network, the deep learning (DL) algorithm solves the defects such as ambient light effect and manual extract RGB values of the colorimetric sensing analysis strategy. Considering Fe(II) is an essential element for life science and environmental monitoring, we have developed a self-calibrating colorimetric sensor assisted deep learning strategy for the Fe(II) detection with indefinite volume. It can directly complete the analysis of Fe(II) concentration via captured images, without going through a complicated process similar to the RGB model. Specifically, we integrated the advantages of colorimetric sensing strategy, absorbing-swelling hydrogel, and DL algorithm to develop a phenanthroline (PHEN) indicator doped PAA-PVA colorimetric sensor (PHEN-PAA-PVA). Then, 2,500 colorimetric response images were collected as the training dataset and assessed 2 DL algorithms and 7 machine learning (ML) algorithms. The convolutional neural network (CNN) model exhibited the most efficiency to quantify 1×10 −5 -9×10 −4 mol/L Fe(II), with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.3×10 −6 mol/L. It provides a promising and blooming in-situ detection approach for Fe(II) analysis, contributes to health management and environment monitoring.

Rational design of trifunctional conductive binder for high-performance Si anodes in lithium-ion batteries

Wenhui Geng,Xinmeng Hu,Qinhua Zhou,Yinhang Zhang,Bin He,Zhiliang Liu,Kuikui Xiao,Dong Cai,Shuo Yang,Huagui Nie,Zhi Yang

Silicon (Si) has been regarded as a candidate for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its excellent specific capacity. Binders, as an essential component in Si anodes, play a key role in enhancing the electrochemical performance of LIBs. In this study, a multifunctional binder named LP19 simultaneously possessing high electron conductivity, high Li-ion conductivity as well as ameliorative mechanical performances was synthesized by assembling the lithiated PAA (LiPAA) and highly conductive PEDOT:PSS molecules. The lithiation treatment of PAA is conducive to the transport of lithium ions, while the double conductive network constructed by conductive PEDOT:PSS and Super P guarantees the stable electric connectivity during lithiation and delithiation processes. Moreover, the optimization of the internal configuration of the molecules realizes the structural and cycling stability of the Si anode. As a consequence, the Si anode utilizing this binary and multifunctional conductive binder demonstrated pronounced cycling stability (2165 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles) and rate performance (1750 mAh g −1 at 8.0 A g −1 ). This work provided a novel design strategy of polymeric binders to promote progress toward high-performance LIBs.

Strategy to construct polyzwitterionic hydrogel coating with antifouling, drag-reducing and weak swelling performance

Jiajia Shen,Miao Du,Ziliang Wu,Yihu Song,Qiang Zheng

Biological fouling, where marine microorganisms attach densely to various submerged surfaces, has been a serious economic problem worldwide. Different from most antifouling approaches based on stiff and solid materials or coatings, a soft and wet coating composed of zwitterionic polymer was prepared in this paper. With the combination of the anti-polyelectrolyte effect of poly-N-(3-sulfopropyl)-N-(methacryloxyethyl)-N,N-dimethylammonium betaine (PSBMA) and the typical polyelectrolyte effect of polyacrylic acid (PAA), a bicomponent hydrogel coating with weak swelling in saline solution was achieved, which could avoid peeling from solid substrates. The bicomponent hydrogel coating showed strong tensile properties and good compression performance and slipperiness. Although the large Young's modulus of the coating relatively weakens the drag reduction effect, entering the mixed lubrication region in low sliding rate is easy and a low friction coefficient at a high rate could thus be obtained. With the aid of silane coupling agent and weak deformation in water and saline solution, the hydrogel coating could be bound tightly on solid surfaces. After strong sandy water abrasion, the bicomponent hydrogel coating could maintain its original state without any cracks and peeling. The hydrogel coating exhibits good anti-bacterial adhesion and anti-protein adsorption. The bicomponent zwitterionic hydrogel coating reported here provides a new strategy for marine antifouling and drag reduction studies.

PAA-modified PVA twin-chain polymer networks with reaction–transport coupling for pH-responsive confined cleaning of fragile archaeological ceramics

Xinyi Liu,Ruyi Wang,Yu Li,Xin Wan,Xiangna Han

PAA-modified PVA TC-PNs enable confined cleaning of fragile celadon glaze surfaces. • pH-responsive network hydration modulates interfacial acid transport. • Freeze-derived pore morphology influences solute migration. • Open-pore transport and Ca retention help limit secondary CaSO₄ precipitation. • Mechanical adaptability enables conformal contact with irregular ceramic surfaces. Confining reactive agents at fragile solid–liquid interfaces while regulating mass transport remains a central challenge in surface cleaning. Marine-recovered archaeological ceramics exemplify this problem because calcareous bio-concretions mechanically interlock with microcracked glazes vulnerable to uncontrolled solvent penetration. Here, we developed pH-responsive poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-modified poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) twin-chain polymer network (TC-PN) hydrogels that couple interfacial reaction with pore-mediated transport. Freeze–thaw processing generated formulation-dependent porous morphologies, and citric acid enabled localized carbonate dissolution. SEM and FTIR analyses of pH-conditioned gels and wet-state mass measurements revealed pH-dependent carboxyl-group ionization and hydration, while low-field NMR identified composition-dependent water-proton relaxation environments. Results suggest that local PAA deprotonation and increased network hydration facilitate acid transport during CaCO 3 dissolution, whereas carbonate removal allows acid accumulation, which may lower interfacial pH and favor PAA reprotonation, thereby attenuating transport. Dye-front and directional-freezing experiments showed that freeze-derived morphology influenced solute transport. Alizarin Red S visualization supported migration of dissolved Ca species from the interface into the hydrogel. Formulations with more open and reticulated morphologies showed less extensive CaSO 4 -rich accumulation within the corrosion pits than the less interconnected reference formulation. Rheological and application tests demonstrated an elastic behavior ( G ′ > G ′ ′ ), reversible deformation, and conformal contact with curved, heterogeneous surfaces. On archaeological celadon, the TC-PN hydrogels removed calcareous bio-concretions, with no evident glaze alteration detected by either Raman spectroscopy or SEM–EDS within the examined regions. Integrating pH-responsive acid transport with pore-mediated migration and retention of dissolved Ca species therefore enables spatially confined cleaning of fragile heritage surfaces. Carbon vacancies modulated confined Fe single-atoms on loofah-derived biochar for Fenton-like process via non-radical PAA activation

Mingjun Xie,Yuying Han,Dandan Wang,Congting Sun,Shuyan Zang

Efficient activation of peracetic acid (PAA) via electron transfer pathway (ETP) is attractive for water treatment, yet flexibly tuning the host electronic environment of single-atom sites while retaining scalability remains challenging. Herein, the concentration of carbon defects (CDs) surrounding Fe–N₅ centers in loofah-derived biochar is tuned by varying the CaCO₃ dosage during one-step carbonization. CaCO₃ concurrently acts as a spacer, in-situ etchant, and CO₂-blowing agent, generating a hierarchically porous framework that exposes Fe–N₅ sites and preserves mechanical integrity. The resulting LP-FeSAC achieves rapid bisphenol A (BPA) removal with k obs  = 1.61 min −1 within 9 min across pH 3–11. Increasing CDs density boosts PAA oxidation over the Fe single-atom catalyst, with broad tolerance to water matrices via a non-radical ETP (97.9%). DFT calculations reveal that CDs-induced Fe N bond compression reorganizes the Fe-3d crystal-field manifold (t₂g/eg), upshifts the d-band center, and lowers the interfacial barrier for ETP. In continuous flow, an LP-FeSAC-functionalized hollow-fiber module sustains ≈90% BPA removal for 600 min with minimal Fe leaching (≤12 μg L −1 ). This work establishes defect-guided hierarchical porosity and Fe–N₅ as an accessible co-catalytic anchor for designing ETP-selective, non-radical advanced oxidation, providing a scalable waste-to-resource route toward remediation of emerging aqueous pollutants.

Feasibility of phenolic contaminant removal from high-saline wastewater by chloride-mediated activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peracetic acid (PAA)

Zhao Song,Yu Zhang,Peiru He,Xuesong Liu,Nanqi Ren,Yidi Chen

Phenolic pollutants are highly toxic and can affect the growth and reproduction of aquatic organisms, as well as contaminate drinking water resources, posing a significant threat to both ecological and human health. However, conventional biological treatment processes are constrained in treating high salinity organic wastewaters due to the potentially lethal effects of high concentrations of dissolved salts on microorganisms. While advanced oxidation processes have shown promise in removing phenolic contaminants from high-saline wastewater, their widespread application is always limited by the high costs associated with energy and chemical usage. In this study, we explored the potential application of directly introducing peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peracetic acid (PAA) to high-salinity water for the removal of nine phenolic contaminants. By establishing a correlation between the degradation rate constants in the PMS/Cl – ( k PMS ) and PAA/Cl – ( k PAA ) systems and various molecule descriptors, two multiple linear regression models were developed to predict the degradation rate constants under investigation. Additionally, we selected bisphenol A (BPA) as the target contaminant and investigated the impact of common ions found in natural water, such as HCO 3 – , NO 3 – , and humic acid, on the removal of BPA using two systems. Finally, we conducted experiments using tap water and sewage water to demonstrate the practical application and performance of the two systems. These experiments aimed to provide valuable insights into the influence of background chloride on PMS and PAA activation, as well as the potential of direct PMS/PAA introduction for eliminating phenolic micropollutants from high-saline wastewaters.

Optical Fiber Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor for Glyceryl Tributyrate Detection Based on the PAA/CS Composite Hydrogel Embedding Protease Method

Hongxin Zhang,Xuegang Li,Xue Zhou,Yanan Zhang,Yong Zhao

Glycerol tributyrate as a low-density lipoprotein plays a crucial role in drug development and food safety. In this work, a novel high-stability fiber optic sensor for glyceryl tributyrate based on the poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and chitosan (CS) composite hydrogel embedding method is first proposed. Compared with traditional functionalization, the lipase in a polymer network structure used in this article can not only avoid chemical reactions that cause damage to the enzyme structure but also avoid the instability of ionic bonds and physical adsorption. Therefore, the PAA/CS hydrogel method proposed in this article can effectively retain enzyme structure. First, the impact of different layers (one to five layers) of PAA/CS on pH sensing performance was explored, and it was determined that layers 1–3 could be used for subsequent sensing experiments. Within the linear detection range of 0.5–10 mM, the detection sensitivities of the one to three layers of the biosensor are divided into 0.65, 0.95, and 1.51 nm/mM, respectively, with the three layers having the best effect. When the number of coating layers is three, the detection limit of the sensor is 0.47 mM, meeting the millimole level detection standard for anticancer requirement. Furthermore, the stability and selectivity of the sensor (in the presence of hemoglobin, urea, cholesterol, acetylcholine, and glucose) were analyzed. The three-layer sensor is used for sample detection. At concentrations of 1–10 mM, the absolute value of the recovery percentage (%) is 82–99%, which can accurately detect samples. The sensor proposed in this paper has the advantages of low sample consumption, high sensitivity, simple structure, and label-free measurement. The enzyme-embedding method provides a new route for rapid and reliable glyceryl tributyrate detection, which has potential applications in food safety as well as the development of anticancer drugs.

Odorant production surges induced by exogenous oxidative stress: An overlooked risk in PAA-based moderate preoxidation for algal-laden water

Cheng Cen,Kejia Zhang,Tuqiao Zhang,Zhenxun Yu,Xinwei Mao,Sihan Wang

Moderate preoxidation is feasible for odor-producing algae treatments, usually requiring trade-offs in algal removal and integrity maintenance. However, dosing oxidants may cause internal oxidative homeostasis imbalances and secondary odorous metabolite responses, adding new trade-offs for moderate treatments. Peracetic acid (PAA)/Fe processes are promising strategies in moderate treatments and thus were applied to examine how to achieve the following three trade-offs: good algal removal, no odorant increases and no releases. For algal removal, the highest removal efficiency was 71.1 %, 87.0 % and 98.1 %, respectively, in PAA/Fe(Ⅲ) separate, PAA/Fe(Ⅱ) separate and PAA/Fe(Ⅱ) simultaneous process. Odorant responses always followed a pattern of "promotion-low dosages, inhibition-high dosages", with the highest production reaching 3.91-fold of the control without PAA addition, well above odorant threshold concentrations (500 ng/L). Instant releases did not occur, yet with delayed releases observed during sludge retention in sedimentation tanks (5, 16 h). It was verified that exogenous oxidative stress stimulated odorant generation with multiple reactive species. Among them, PAA oxidant was crucial in algal removal and odorant promotion; R-O· and ·OH caused odorant generation and degradation, respectively. Overall, PAA/Fe(Ⅱ) processes were more suitable for moderate treatments, simultaneously avoiding odorant increases and allowing sludge retention. This work provides a novel perspective for moderate preoxidation, highlighting instant odorant generation and delayed releases triggered by exogenous PAA stressors.

Antifouling polyethersulfone composite ultrafiltration membrane fabricated with SiO2-g-PAA as additive and its application in oil-in-water emulsion

Jun Yin,Xinan Cai,Bingshan Wang

In order to reduce silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs) agglomeration, improve the dispersity of SiO 2 NPs in the matrix of polyethersulfone (PES) composite membrane, the poly (acrylic acid) grafted SiO 2 NPs (SiO 2 -g-PAA NPs) are beforehand synthesized via surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP). PES/SiO 2 -g-PAA organic-inorganic composite membranes are convenient fabricated by blending PES matrix with the as-synthesized SiO 2 -g-PAA NPs via the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and surface scanning electron microscope (SEM) results confirm that the well dispersed SiO 2 -g-PAA NPs tend to migrate toward the membrane top surfaces. As a result, the composite membrane exhibited the highest pure water flux and oil flux around 233.72 and 97.29 L/m 2 h, which equal to 3.6 times and 8.8 times of unmodified PES membrane respectively. The flux recovery rate increased from 45.74% to 77.12%, suggesting the fouling-resistance of the composite membranes was greatly improved. Furthermore, the SiO 2 -g-PAA NPs exhibit excellent stability in the membrane matrix benefit from the interaction between PAA polymer chains and PES. In addition, the reactive PAA chains on the membrane surface provide a platform for further functionalization.
