Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and arsenic (As) co-contaminated soil has emerged as a significant environmental concern. In this study, the performance and underlying mechanisms of integrated thermal and biostimulant enhanced bioremediation (ITBEB) of PAHs and As co-contaminated soil by an indigenous microbial consortium were explored. The results demonstrated that thermal treatment with temperatures elevated from 25°C to 55°C, in combination with biostimulants of rhamnolipids or yeast extract, improved the bioremediation efficiency of both PAHs and As. The highest bioremediation efficiency, 69.03% for total PAHs and 17.69% for As, were achieved at 55°C with the addition of yeast extract, compared to 39.85% and 8.69%, respectively, at 25°C without biostimulants. During the ITBEB process, the indigenous microbial consortium was capable of simultaneously degrading PAHs and transforming inorganic As into less toxic volatile forms via methylation. Notably, the abundance of functional bacteria, such as Bacillus , increased substantially from 8.29% initially to 63.71% at 55°C with yeast extract, contributing significantly to the enhanced bioremediation efficiency. Furthermore, the highest abundances of functional genes PAH-RHDα and arsM were observed at 35°C with biostimulants, whereas their expression declined at higher temperatures of 45°C and 55°C. This observation, combined with the results of correlation analyses, indicated that the effectiveness of bioremediation was strongly influenced by the presence of functional bacteria and their associated genes, as well as environmental factors such as iron content, pH, and soil organic matter. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the synergistic effects of thermal treatment and biostimulants in the bioremediation of PAHs and As co-contaminated soils, offering a foundation for the development of more effective and sustainable remediation strategies.

Iron-activated persulfate (PS) systems commonly suffer from the poor Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle in groundwater and soils, due to the rapid oxidation of Fe(II) by both PS-related and naturally occurring oxidative substances. Maintaining the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle is necessary to achieve the high efficiency and stability of iron-activated persulfate systems toward aromatic contaminants (e.g., PAHs) in groundwater and soils. Herein, we discover the mixtures of dithionite (DTN) and zerovalent iron (ZVI) to synergistically activate PS, and develop highly efficient, stable DTN-ZVI/PS systems for PAHs removal in groundwater and soils. DTN and intermediates sulfite/thiosulfate initiated reduction of ZVI-derived Fe(III) species in DTN-ZVI/PS systems. This reaction accelerated the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle and coated ZVI with FeS x , both favoring the generation of HO and SO 4 − . DTN-ZVI/PS exhibited Nap removal of >90% in water during 11 of 15 supplementations of Nap and/or PS, 1.4–2.4 times ZVI/PS. Similarly, 0.47–4.3 fold increments of Nap removal k obs were obtained in five chemical types of groundwater, and 1.3–2.4 fold increments of PAHs removal in soils. This study may provide a technical basis to develop new Fe-activated oxidation systems for groundwater and soil remediation .

Soil organic matter (SOM) is considered as a pivotal factor influencing the adsorption of pollutants. However, few prior quantitative investigations of the SOM functional group distribution to the contaminants' fate have been conducted. In this paper, the SOM cluster method based on COSMO-RS theory has been conducted to illustrate the chemical composition variables of SOM that affect the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) fate in quantitative terms. In the theoretical simulations, the contributions of carbonyl, carboxyl, aromatic, oxyalkyl and aliphatic groups in SOM to phenanthrene (Phe) and pyrene (Pyr) adsorption are evaluated by calculating the partition coefficients ( LogP ). The results show that the increase in oxyalkyl content leads to a decrease in LogP . Inversely, carbonyl and carboxyl groups of SOMs positively associated with Phe adsorption. The changes in aromatic and alkyl components have a similar magnitude of influence on LogP . Moreover, the effect of non-carbon-based functional groups in SOM on the Phe partitioning has been examined for the first time. The increase of sulfur and nitrogen content in SOM hinder Phe adsorption, while the rise of phosphorus content promotes the adsorption. In soil adsorption experiments, four natural soils, characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT), are selected to verify the influence of SOM functional group distribution. Comparing the experimental SOM-water partition coefficient ( LogK oc ) with the simulation predicted LogP suggests that the COSMO-RS based SOM cluster method can predict PAHs adsorption ability in SOM.

This study investigated the transformations of heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in rhizosphere soils and adaptive responses of rhizobacterial community under the real field conditions during four growth stages (e.g., greening, tillering, heading, and maturity) of early rice (Zhongjiazao 17) and late rice (Zhongyou 9918) in Jiangshe village (JSV) and Yangji village (YJV). Results showed that rhizosphere soils of YJV were mildly polluted by Cd and PAHs compared to that of JSV. The relative abundance of bioavailable Cd (bio-Cd) and bioavailable As (bio-As) in rhizosphere soil increased before the heading stage but decreased at the subsequent growth stage, but the content of ΣPAHs in rhizosphere soil decreased gradually during whole growth period. The dominant rhizobacteria genera at YJV (e.g., Bacillus, Massilia, Sphingomonas , and Geobacter ) increased at an abundance level from the tillering to heading stage. Rhizobacteria interacted with the above co-pollutant more intensely at the tillering and heading stage, where genes involved in HM-resistance and PAH-degradation appeared to have a significant enhancement. The contents of bio-Cd and bio-As in rhizosphere soil of early rice were higher than that of late rice at each growth stage, especially at the heading stage. Bio-Cd, ΣPAHs, and organic matter were key factors influencing the community structure of rhizobacteria. Results of this study provide valuable insights about the interactions between HM-PAH co-pollutant and rhizobacterial community under real field conditions and thus develop in-situ rhizosphere remediation techniques for contaminated paddy fields.

The levels of flavor compounds and hazardous compounds are important indicators for evaluating high-temperature roasted food. In this paper, the effect of tea pre-marination on non-volatile compounds, volatile compounds, and hazardous compounds in roasted chicken. The results showed that the total content of key umami non-volatile compounds in roasted chicken marinated with green tea, white tea, and black tea increased by 17.43 % to 100.11 %. The content of alkenes, alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones in high-temperature roasted chicken marinated with oolong tea and yellow tea was increased. Different teas had varying inhibitory effects on hazardous compounds in high-temperature roasted chicken, while green tea exhibited the highest inhibition efficacy. The inhibition rates of green tea for ACY, 5-HMF, HCAs, and PAHs were 72.12 %, 69.87 %, 92.49 %, and 14.92 %, respectively. Flavonoids in tea may play an important role in the flavor enhancement and hazardous compounds inhibition of high-temperature roasted chicken.

Addressing the challenge of accurately monitoring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aquatic systems, this study employed diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique to achieve methods detection limits as low as 0.02 ng L −1 to 0.05 ng L −1 through in situ preconcentration and determination of time-integrated concentrations. The efficacy of the developed DGT samplers was validated under diverse environmental conditions, demonstrating independence from factors such as pH (5.03–9.01), dissolved organic matter (0–20 mg L −1 ), and ionic strength (0.0001–0.6 M). Notably, the introduction of a novel theoretical approach to calculate diffusion coefficients based on solvent-accessible volume tailored for PAHs significantly enhanced the method’s applicability, particularly for organic pollutants with low solubility. Field deployments in coastal zones validated the DGT method against traditional grab sampling, with findings advocating a 4 to 7-day optimal deployment duration for balancing sensitivity and mitigating lag time effects. These results provide a sophisticated, efficient solution to the persistent challenge of monitoring hydrophobic organic pollutants in aquatic environments, broadening the scope and applicability of DGT in environmental science and providing a robust tool for researchers.

The efficiency and influencing factors during PAH-polluted soil remediation by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) low-temperature plasma technology are investigated in this study. Gas chromatography, microbial community structure analysis, and response surface analysis were used to optimize suitable remediation processing factors. The degradation rates of phenanthrene and benzo[a]pyrene reached 94.37% and 86.53%, respectively, at an initial concentration of 100.00 mg/kg, whereas optimal parameters for the system were identified as 130 V for voltage, 160 Hz for frequency, 0.60 L/min for gas flow rate, and 40 min for discharge time. Comprehensively, DBD plasma is an efficient, low-energy, and sustainable remediation technology according to the energy consumption calculation and comparison with the relevant literature.

With the urbanization and population growth, the disposal of plastic waste has become a significant challenge, as the traditional methods often result in pollution and resource wastage. Pyrolysis technology offers a sustainable solution by converting the waste plastics into valuable gas or liquid fuels. The co-pyrolysis of plastics and biomass is an effective approach for synergistically managing these two types of solid waste. The polyethylene (PE) and salix psammophila (SP) was used to investigate the gas production characteristics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) formation during the co-pyrolysis. Additionally, Cu/ZSM-5, Co/ZSM-5, and Ni/ZSM-5 catalysts were employed to investigate the effects of different metal-loaded catalysts on the co-pyrolysis process. The results indicate that, with the increase of the pyrolysis temperature, the yield of gas-phase products gradually increases, solid residue decreases, and liquid-phase products initially increase before declining, reaching their maximum at 500 °C. The synergistic effect promotes the formation of C 2 H m (C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 6 ) and CH 4 , leading to the increase of the gas-phase product yields compared to the individual pyrolysis. The addition of catalysts further enhances the gas production: Cu/ZSM-5 boosts H 2 yield, Co/ZSM-5 shows selectivity for CH 4 and C 2 H m , and Ni/ZSM-5 exhibits better selectivity for CO and H 2 . Under the various pyrolysis conditions, aromatic compounds and aliphatic hydrocarbons consistently dominate the liquid-phase products. With the increase of the pyrolysis temperature, the proportion of aliphatic hydrocarbons decreases, while the proportion of aromatic compounds increases. The addition of catalysts reduces the proportions of both aliphatic and aromatic compounds. PAHs generation is temperature-dependent, significantly increasing at 700 °C. At the low pyrolysis temperatures, the co-pyrolysis reduces PAHs yield, but at high temperatures, PAHs formation increases. The addition of catalysts decreases PAHs yield and toxicity equivalency. Cu/ZSM-5 promotes the cracking of two-ring PAHs, reducing two-ring PAHs yield. Co and Ni catalysts enhance the selective aromatization of small hydrocarbon molecules, forming low-ring PAHs and limiting PAHs aggregation. Overall, Ni/ZSM-5 demonstrates the best performance in enhancing gas production and reducing PAHs emissions, followed by Co/ZSM-5 and Cu/ZSM-5.

Ferrofluids are innovative functional media combing magnetic nanoparticles with liquid fluidity. In this study, a hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent-ferrofluid was prepared by dispersing oleic acid-coated magnetic nanoparticles in hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent composing of DL-menthol and lauric acid, and applied for magnetic assisted liquid–liquid microextraction of trace polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water and food samples. Following microextraction, phase separation was achieved rapidly using an external magnetic field, eliminating the need for time-consuming steps such as centrifugation or ice baths. The material’s structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy, while its magnetic properties were examined with a vibrating sample magnetometer. Extraction parameters were systematically screened and optimized using Plackett–Burman and Central Composite design experiments. Under optimized conditions, the limits of detection and quantification were 0.05–0.2 µg L − 1 and 0.1–0.5 µg L − 1 , respectively, with intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations ( n = 5) below 1.6% and 1.7%. The extraction mechanism was further explored using density functional theory. Then, this method was successfully applied to determine of PAHs from environmental water and food samples, achieving spiked recoveries of 85.9–103.0%. Its greenness and practical applicability demonstrate its potential for food analysis and environmental monitoring.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), as a kind of persistent organic pollutant, pose serious threat to humans and organisms’ health. In this work, cobalt oxide/g-C₃N₄ composites with low cobalt content (≤0.5 wt%) were prepared via a high-temperature solid-phase method for visible-light-driven catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), as an efficient system, to degrade PAHs in water. It is noteworthy that this work systematically studied the properties of the prepared materials and the mechanism of active species generation for pollutant degradation. The material forms a p-n heterojunction structure and exhibits visible light absorption. Under conditions where both the catalyst and PMS concentrations are 100 mg/L, near-complete degradation of 0.2 mg/L phenanthrene(PHE) can be achieved within 35 min. Mechanistic studies revealed that the mainly combined contribution of active species are 1 O 2 and O •— 2 , indicating that the degradation process involves both radical and non-radical pathways. After 5 cycles, the material retained 80% degradation efficiency while maintaining structural stability and minimal cobalt leaching, providing a feasible approach for developing stable and efficient heterogeneous photocatalysis-PMS systems. To establish an efficient oxidation process for the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in textile dyeing sludge, the effects of various operating parameters were optimized during the ultrasound process, Fenton process and the combined ultrasound–Fenton process. The results showed that the ultrasonic density of 1.80 w/cm 3 , both H 2 O 2 and Fe 2+ dosages of 140 mmol/L and pH 3 were favorable conditions for the degradation of PAHs. The degradation efficiency of high molecular weight PAHs was close to or even higher than that of light molecular weight PAHs. The highest degradation efficiencies of Σ16 PAHs were obtained within 30 min in the order of: Fenton (83.5%) >ultrasound–Fenton (75.5%) >ultrasound (45.5%), then the efficiencies were decreased in the other of: ultrasound–Fenton (73.0%) >Fenton (70.3%) >ultrasound (41.4%) in 60 min. The extra PAHs were released from the intracellular substances and the cavities of sludge due to the disruption of sludge during the oxidation process. Also, the degradation of PAHs could be inhibited by the other organic matter in the sludge. The combined ultrasound–Fenton process showed more efficient than both ultrasound process and Fenton process not only in the surface of sludge but also in the sludge interior.

(1) Background: Amino acids and carbohydrates are widely used as additives in the food industry. These compounds have been proven to be an influencing factor in the production of chemical carcinogenic compounds polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, the effect of the properties of the amino acids and carbohydrates on the production of PAHs is still little known. (2) Methods: We added different (i) R groups (the R group represents an aldehyde group in a glucose molecule or a ketone group in a fructose molecule); (ii) molecular weight carbohydrates; (iii) polarities, and (iv) acid-base amino acids to pork sausages. The effects of the molecular properties of carbohydrates and amino acids on the formation of PAHs in grilled pork sausages were investigated. (3) Results: The results showed that a grilled sausage with aldehyde-basedd-glucose was capable of producing more PAHs than a sausage with keto-basedd-fructose. A higher PAH content was determined in the grilled pork sausage when the smaller molecular weight,d-glucose, was added compared with the sausage where the larger molecular weight, 4-(α-d-glucosido)-d-glucose and cellulose were added. The addition of basic amino acids (l-lysine,l-arginine) was capable of producing more PAHs compared with the addition of acidic amino acids (l-glutamic acid,l-aspartate). When amino acid containing a benzene ring was added, a smaller volume of PAHs was produced compared with the addition of other amino acids. (4) Conclusions: Our study suggests that systematic consideration of molecule properties is necessary when using food additives (amino acids and carbohydrates) for food processing. Keywords:amino acids;carbohydrates;acidity;polarity;molecular weight
