Highly Sensitive Electrochemical Sensor Based on PEDOT:PSS-β-CD-SWCNT-COOH Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode Enables Trace Analysis Shikonin

Jingdang Chai,Jie Zhang,Yangping Wen,Lie Zou,Xinxin Zhang,Xing Xin,Muhan Zhou,Jingkun Xu,Ge Zhang

An electrochemical sensor based on PEDOT:PSS-β-CD-SWCNT-COOH/GCE for highly sensitive analysis of shikonin (SHI) in PBS buffer solution was reported. PEDOT:PSS-β-CD-SWCNT-COOH composite was obtained by using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) and carboxylated single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT-COOH) to modify glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopies. In optimized conditions, PEDOT:PSS-β-CD-SWCNT-COOH had a high sensitivity to SHI and it could detect SHI in linear ranges 6 nM to 30 μM with a low detection limit of 1.8 nM. And a series of experiments showed that the modified electrode exhibited good repeatability, reproducibility, and selectivity to electrochemical determination of SHI.

Preparation of black phosphorus-PEDOT:PSS hybrid semiconductor composites with good film-forming properties and environmental stability in water containing oxygen

Jie Zhang,Wanchuan Ding,Zhouxiang Zhang,Jingkun Xu,Yangping Wen

The environmental instability of black phosphorus (BP) is one of the difficult issues nowadays that need to be addressed urgently due to its serious degradation, damage in structure and deterioration in properties after exposure to ambient conditions, which severely limits the practical application of BP and its devices under humidity circumstances containing oxygen, particularly watery environments containing oxygen. In this study, PEDOT:PSS with high electrical conductivity, good film-forming ability, excellent environmental stability, and satisfactory solution processability was introduced to improve the environmental instability of BP with unusual structure and extraordinary properties. The mixed dispersions of BP-PEDOT:PSS with different weight ratios were successfully prepared by sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation in isopropanol containing PEDOT:PSS particles under an anhydrous and oxygen-free nitrogen atmosphere. The hybrid semiconductor films of BP-PEDOT:PSS were obtained by drying corresponding BP-PEDOT:PSS mixed dispersions under vacuum; these films were then exposed to ambient air for days before their morphology, structure, and other properties were characterized. The BP-PEDOT:PSS film electrodes were prepared by drop-coating corresponding isopropanol dispersions of BP-PEDOT:PSS, and their environmental stabilities were investigated by electrochemistry in different water systems containing oxygen. The introduction of PEDOT:PSS not only enhanced film-forming ability and electrical conductivity of BP composite films, but also improved their environmental stability in water containing oxygen, which will afford a new opportunity for their application in electronics and optoelectronics of inorganic/organic polymer hybrid semiconductors based on graphene-like materials/conducting polymers under moist air conditions, particularly the electrochemical application in sensors, capacitors, and batteries/cells of BP-PEDOT:PSS composites and their devices in watery environments containing oxygen.

Multifunctional MXene/PEDOT:PSS-Based Phase Change Organohydrogels for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Medium-Low Temperature Infrared Stealth

Ting-yu Zhu,Wan-jun Jiang,Shuang Wu,Zi-jie Huang,Yu-long Liu,Xiao-dong Qi,Yong Wang

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and infrared stealth technologies are essential for military and civilian applications. However, it remains a significant challenge to integrate various functions efficiently into a material efficiently. Herein, a minimalist strategy to fabricate multifunctional phase change organohydrogels (PCOHs) was proposed, which were fabricated from polyacrylamide (PAM) organohydrogels, MXene/PEDOT:PSS hybrid fillers, and sodium sulfate decahydrate (Na2SO4·10H2O, SSD) via one-step photoinitiation strategies. PCOHs with a high enthalpy value (130.7 J/g) and encapsulation rate (98%) could adjust the temperature by triggering a phase change of SSD, which can hide infrared radiation to achieve medium-low temperature infrared stealth. In addition, the PCOH-based sensor has good strain sensing ability due to the incorporation of MXene/PEDOT:PSS and can precisely monitor human movement. Remarkably, benefiting from the electron conduction of the three-dimensional conductive network and the ion conduction of the hydrogel, the EMI shielding efficiency (k) of PCOHs can reach 99.99% even the filler content as low as 1.8 wt %. Additionally, EMI shielding, infrared stealth, and sensing-integrated PCOHs can be adhered to arbitrary targets due to their excellent flexibility and adaptability. This work offers a promising pathway for fabricating multifunctional phase change materials, which show great application prospects in military and civilian fields.

Porous rGO/ZnSe/CoSe2 dispersed in PEDOT:PSS as an efficient counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells

Arnauld Robert Tapa,Wanchun Xiang,Abdelaal. S. A. Ahmed,Senwei Wu,Bin Li,Qiufen Liu,Chawuch Machar Jacob Chuti,Xiujian Zhao

In this work, we employ a simple hydrothermal method to synthesize a metal–organic framework (MOF) derived selenide from a reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/structured zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF). The resulting MOF-derived selenide (rGO/ZnSe/CoSe2) consists of porous nanowires encapsulated in a carbon matrix and having a high surface area (169.30 m2 g−1). This porous rGO/ZnSe/CoSe2 is combined with polystyrene sulfonate-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT:PSS) for use as a CE for DSSCs. CEs based on different weight percentages (1, 3, and 5 wt%) of rGO/ZnSe/CoSe2 powder in PEDOT:PSS solution are compared with the commonly used platinum (Pt) based CE. The rGO/ZnSe/CoSe2–PEDOT:PSS composite benefits from the synergistic effects between porous rGO/ZnSe/CoSe2 having a high surface area and PEDOT:PSS which holds superior conductivity and strong binding capability with a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrate. Therefore, the 3 wt% rGO/ZnSe/CoSe2–PEDOT:PSS composite based CE achieved a good stability and superior electrocatalytic activity compared to Pt CE. Furthermore, DSSCs based on a 3 wt% rGO/ZnSe/CoSe2–PEDOT:PSS composite CE achieved a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.60%, compared to the PCE of the Pt CE based DSSC (7.14%) prepared under similar conditions. This work has revealed a new approach to prepare MOF-derived selenide based CEs with high electrocatalytic activity without any calcination. In addition, we demonstrated that the low-cost 3 wt% rGO/ZnSe/CoSe2–PEDOT:PSS composite CE is an excellent candidate to replace Pt CE in DSSCs.

Pressure-Temperature Dual-Parameter Flexible Sensors Based on Conformal Printing of Conducting Polymer PEDOT:PSS on Microstructured Substrate

Xiangyou Meng,Lixin Mo,Shaobo Han,Jing Zhao,Yaqin Pan,Fangdong Wang,Yi Fang,Luhai Li

Flexible sensors play an important role in collecting stimuli information and sending them to a central processing unit or cloud for analysis and decision-making. As much information is needed to be collected, the fabrication of multiparameter flexible sensors is becoming increasingly urgent. To this end, conducting polymer-based composites have been proven as promising materials for developing pressure-temperature dual-parameter sensors. However, fabrication of ideal dual-parameter sensors with fully decoupled pressure-temperature readings, good sensitivity, and a simple preparation process remain challenges. Here, a strategy of fabricating a pressure-temperature dual-parameter sensor based on conformal printing of conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) on the surface of microstructured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate is demonstrated. It is found that secondary doped PEDOT:PSS provides temperature-independent conductivity. Combined with the sea-island microstructured PDMS substrate, a screen-printed flexible sensor demonstrates fully decoupled pressure-temperature reading ability, competitive sensitivity, and good stability. The excellent sensing properties of the devices, with a maximum pressure sensitivity of 134.25 kPa −1 and linear response region over 300 kPa as well as highly sensitive temperature sensing for finger touch, together with their unique advantages of low-cost and large-area fabrication, make the printed flexible dual-parameter sensors promising applications in electric-skin (e-skin), human-machine interaction, and robotics.

Anion Size Effect of Ionic Liquids in Tuning the Thermoelectric and Mechanical Properties of PEDOT:PSS Films through a Counterion Exchange Strategy

Qikai Li,Qing Zhou,Wangping Xu,Long Wen,Jun Li,Biao Deng,Jiajia Zhang,Hu Xu,Weishu Liu

Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) thermoelectric thin films have attracted significant interest due to their solution-processable manufacturing. However, molecular-level tuning or doping is still a challenge to synergistically boost their thermoelectric performance and mechanically stretchable capabilities. In this work, we report a counterion exchange between ionic liquid bis(x-fluorosulfonyl) amide lithium (Li:nFSI, n = 1, 3, 5) with different sizes of anions and a PEDOT:PSS-induced bipolaron network, which significantly boosted the thermoelectric power factor from 0.8 to 157 μW m K–2 at 235 °C and the maximum tensile strain from 3% to over 30%. The π–π* stacking of the PEDOT polymer chains was fine-tuned by the hydrophobic anions of nFSI–, providing a technical route for constructing a bipolaron network and inducing the transition from hopping transport to band-like transport. Furthermore, we found that the stretchable capabilities, that is, εmax, were connected to the gelation time of the PEDOT:PSS-Li:nFSI aqueous solution. Thus, more fluorine-containing groups resulted in longer gelation times and higher εmax values, which significantly improved the processability of the solution-derived films.

Study on the Fabrication of PEDOT:PSS/Si Hybrid Solar Cells Incorporated with F4TCNQ and VTMO

Chen Yang,Zhiting Luo,Wenhui Ma,Shaoyuan Li,Guoqiang Lv,Kaixin Fu,Kai Liu,Haonan Li,Huizhen Sun,Xiuhua Chen

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT):polystyrenesulfonate (PSS)/Si hybrid heterojunction solar cells (HHSCs) are fabricated by a solution-based synthesis method which combines the advantages of PEDOT:PSS and the superior performance of crystalline silicon. The optimized PEDOT:PSS–2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ) hole transport layer (HTL) was used to prepare organosilicon solar cells with a short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 33.33 mA/cm2 and a photoelectric conversion efficiency (η) of 13.23%. The HTL films were found to have increased conductivity by the addition of an electron-accepting dopant (F4TCNQ), obtaining well-defined crystallinity and few defects. In addition, an one-step combination of F4TCNQ with a silane coupling agent (vinyltrimethoxysilane, VTMO) was used to improve the textured device, with a notable efficiency of 14.46% and a Jsc of 33.88 mA/cm2. Our study provides an alternative and easy way to establish organic–inorganic hybrid applications with excellent optoelectronic properties and to gain a deeper understanding of organic semiconductors.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS)–molybdenum oxide composite films as hole conductors for efficient planar perovskite solar cells

Yurong Jiang,Chen Li,Hairui Liu,Ruiping Qin,Heng Ma

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS)–molybdenum oxide (MoOx) composite films are used as hole transport layers in planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by simply incorporating solution-processed MoOx powders into a PEDOT:PSS solution. Compared to PEDOT:PSS based PSCs, the PEDOT:PSS–MoOx based PSC exhibits an obvious improvement in conversion efficiency, open circuit voltage, and fill factor. The morphology of perovskite films indicates that the film coverage has been improved due to the introduction of MoOx nanospots into the underlayer, which are regarded as the growing sites of the crystal nucleus of the perovskites during annealing. A PEDOT:PSS–MoOx based device with a power conversion efficiency of over 15% has been achieved, suggesting that the PEDOT:PSS–MoOx film is efficient as a hole transport layer in obtaining highly efficient planar perovskite solar cells.

Graphdiyne marries PEDOT:PSS to form high-stable heterostructure from 2-unstable components toward ultra-low detection limit of uric acid detection in sweat

Li Yunpeng,Shi Zhuanzhuan,Wu Xiaoshuai,Miao Wenting,Yang Zhengyi,Lou Xinyu,Sun Wei,Guo Chunxian,Li Chang Ming

PEDOT:PSS has been used as a biomimetic uric acid (UA) sensor but suffers from unfortunate low detection limit (LOD), narrow detection range and poor stability. Herein, we get graphdiyne (GDY) marry PEDOT:PSS to create a very stable GDY@PEDOT:PSS heterostructure for a biomimetic UA sensor, which accomplishes the lowest LOD (6 nM), the widest detection range (0.03 μM-7 mM) and the longest stability (98.1% for 35 days) among the related UA sensors. The sensor was successfully used to in situ real-time detection of  UA in sweat. The enhancement mechanisms of the sensor were investigated, and results discover that C≡C of GDY and C = C of PEDOT:PSS can cross-link each other by π–π interactions, making not only the former strongly resistant against oxidation deterioration, but also causes the latter to efficiently prevent water swelling of polymer for poor conductivity, thereby leading to high stability from both components. While the stabilized heterostructure can also offer more active sites by enhanced absorption of UA via π-π interactions for highly sensitive detection of UA. This work holds great promise for a practical sweat UA sensor while providing scientific insight to design a stable and electrocatalytically active structure from two unstable components. Composite cellulose-PEDOT:PSS conducting hydrogels destroy bacterial Cell wall structure for prevention of wound infection

Tingting Luo,Zihan Zhang,Nana Zhang,Yufei Liu,Kai Zhang,Lanlan Wei,Lijuan Long,Shuhao Qin,Min He,Jie Yu,Heng Luo

Wounds infected with Staphylococcus aureus ( S.aureus ) represent a significant healthcare challenge. The interaction between the bacterial cell membrane and functional groups of conductive materials induces deformation or rupture of the bacteria, thereby achieving an antibacterial effect. Conductive hydrogels mimic this phenomenon through localized current distribution, offering a promising therapeutic strategy. However, conventional conductive materials like PEDOT:PSS often suffer from phase separation in hydrogels, limiting their applications. To address these limitations, this study engineers a three-dimensional bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofiber template that utilizes hydroxy-mediated hydrogen bonding to adsorb and align PEDOT:PSS within the hydrogel matrix, forming continuous conductive pathways. The composite consists of a conductive moiety made of BC/PEDOT:PSS, which is incorporated into a hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic acid, and tannic acid. The resulting material achieves a conductivity of 11.1 S/cm and a tensile strain of 605.8 %, significantly surpassing existing benchmarks. The incorporation of BC greatly enhances the hydrogel's mechanical properties and conductivity, making it a promising candidate for wound healing applications.

Self-assembled deposition of Ag nano-particles on PPy@PEDOT:PSS films to detect melamine molecules

He Song,Chang Mengyu,Liu Pengcheng,Wang Xueqin,Bai Zhongchen

We studied a Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERs) film by self-assembled deposition of Ag nanoparticles on the surface of PPy@PEDOT:PSS films to detect melamine molecules. The PPy@PEDOT:PSS film was prepared using an electrochemical polymerization method in a mixture solution of PPy and PEDOT:PSS. Then, Ag nanoparticles were directly deposited on the surface of PPy@PEDOT:PSS films by a chemical self-assembly method as an active SERs substrate to detect melamine molecules. The results showed that the density of Ag nanoparticles on the surface of PPy@PEDOT:PSS film was gradually increased due to the increase of depositional time of Ag nanoparticles. Accordingly, The SERs effect was also substantially enhanced. The signal of melamine was increased up to 440 times. The melamine molecules at 6.4 ng/ml concentration could be clearly identified. This preparing method of SERs film and detecting method of melamine molecules provide a new strategy for the design and application of chemical sensors and bio-sensors.

Injectable PEDOT:PSS-conductive hydrogel based on marine polysaccharides for peripheral nerve repair

YaoFa Lin,WanWan Shao,WeiLiang Miao,HaoNan Zhang,GuoQiao Zhang,WangSheng Song,ChenShen Chi,Mei Li,YingZhao Liu

The repair of peripheral nerve injuries remains a major challenge in the field of tissue engineering. Electrical signals play a crucial role in the process of nerve regeneration, making the development of biomimetic materials with excellent conductivity and biocompatibility highly significant for neural tissue repair. In this study, a three-dimensional network hydrogel CMOS was prepared based on marine polysaccharide carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and oxidized alginate sodium (OSA), and its electrical conductivity was enhanced by doping different volume fractions (1 %, 3 %, 5 %) of conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS. This dual-component design synergistically combines the intrinsic bioactivity of marine polysaccharides with the electrical functionality of PEDOT:PSS, addressing two key limitations of conventional hydrogels: poor bioactivity and insufficient conductivity. The resulting conductive hydrogels exhibited good gelation capability and favorable swelling behavior. Electrochemical analyses confirmed that the incorporation of PEDOT:PSS significantly enhanced the electrical conductivity of the hydrogel. In vitro cell experiments demonstrated that the hydrogels were biocompatible with PC12 cells, with the 3 % PEDOT:PSS group (CMOS/P3) achieving an optimal balance between conductivity and cellular activity. Moreover, the hydrogel displayed excellent injectability and biodegradability. When injected into the site of sciatic nerve crush injury, CMOS/P3 promoted the expression of key neural regeneration markers NF200 and S100, and alleviated gastrocnemius muscle atrophy. In conclusion, this marine polysaccharide-based PEDOT:PSS conductive hydrogel provides a promising injectable biomimetic platform for peripheral nerve regeneration.
